ITW: Jennifer Garner is concerned about her pregnancy weight gain

In yesterday’s post about Ben Affleck and his 1970s wiglet, I also threw in some photos of Jennifer Garner from her daily paparazzi-friendly jaunts. I mentioned the weirdness of Garner’s pregnancy style – when she’s not pregnant, she wears really baggy, unflattering clothes that make her look pregnant, and now that we know she is knocked up, all of sudden she’s wearing fitted clothes and she looks slender. It’s the strangest thing. In Touch Weekly might have an explanation for it, though – according to Jennifer’s unnamed friend, Garner has been working out four to five times a week with a personal trainer so that she doesn’t put on as much weight as she put on with her second pregnancy:

Some people may see pregnancy as an excuse to let themselves go, but Jennifer Garner is clearly not that girl! A friend says the star – who’s in her second trimester – has been working out four to five times a week with her personal trainer.

The pal says Jen, 39, is trying to keep her workouts up so she can give in to her cravings without all the guilt.

“Jen’s pregnancy cravings are cookies and cheese puffs,” the friend reveals. “She knows those calories add up.”

[From In Touch Weekly, print edition]

Cookies? Cheese puffs? I wouldn’t think Jennifer would even keep that stuff in stock at her house. She seems like the all-organic-everything type. As for the whole exercising while pregnant thing – I don’t really have an opinion. Don’t most doctors say that women can exercise while pregnant, just not anything really high-impact or super-aerobic? I think Jennifer is just worried about gaining so much weight again.

or maybe she’s just realizing how much attention she can get showing her tummy off dressed glamorously a la beyonce or beckham…?

  2. mimi says:

with all her money, why does she dress like that? the welfare moms I work with have more style…?

  3. Embee says:

I was told that whatever you were already doing is probably ok to continue. Except that my doc didn’t want me doing Bikram yoga and I ignored her and did it 3-4/week anyway. Jennifer’s experienced and I am sure she knows how much better you feel if you work out while pregnant. It also helps with the recovery. It’s not necessarily about appearance as much as it is about being physically capable of handling the rigors of pregnancy and having a newborn (plus 2 children).

  4. layla says:

She is so bland its annoying.

  5. i.want.shoes says:

I’m a mom and I NEVER go out dressed like that. Having kids is not an excuse to dress like a slob.

  6. Mika says:

Yeah, she’s a shlubb, but her kids are really cute. Especially Violet, what an adorable little nerd.

  7. lucy2 says:

I don’t remember her being that big with baby #2, but who knows.

She’s in pants and a top…are people expecting evening gowns? Maybe she just doesn’t care about fashion and stuff in her day to day life. Funny how some celebs are praised for being that way, and others are scolded for it.

  8. Courtney says:

what do you expect her to go out dressed up all the time. it’s her 3rd kid every pregnancy is different and she’s of advanced maternal age and an actress so obviously she has to worry more about the weight she gains while she’s with child than the normal mom to be does

  9. Heather says:

I remember when she used to be hot and cared what she looked like. Remember, “Jennifer Garner gets up at 4 am to do workouts for Alias…”?? I think she is probably a great person and mom, but I feel sorry for Ben Affleck because he was duped into marrying this hot woman who cared about the way she looked and then she –surprise– turns into this sloppy “Mom” person who appears to barely look in the mirror before she leaves the house. I think this just feeds into the perception of women turning into slobs after they have kids, so I am happy if she is trying to get her sexy back (and FYI, Jen, flashing your thong all of the time out of the top of your mom jeans does not count as sexy).

  10. gee says:

@Healther, you literally stole the words right out of my mouth. Or off my keyboard? lol.

  11. Happymom says:

She doesn’t have to dress “glam” or sexy-but why the hell can’t she pull a cute, normal outfit together? I am mystified when I see her. A lot of times when she’s called the paps, she’s out shopping-so clearly it’s not like she doesn’t have the wardrobe. And it’s not like she couldn’t wear the mom ensemble for drop off of cute sweats-she just puts the strangest outfits together. As for her pregnancy concerns about weight-the more you gain during, the bigger pain it is to take off afterwards-especially as you get older (btdt) so if she’s able to work out, great. As for the weird food cravings-no matter how healthy you normally eat, pregnancy is weird. I never eat junk food, and during my first trimester of my last pregnancy I lived on crunchy cheetos.

  12. Pix says:

She’s probably working out so much b/c she knows how hard it is to drop the weight after the baby. She’s older and this is her 3rd baby. The weight gets harder and harder to take off the older you get. I say good for her…and i am not a even fan.

  13. 4Real says:

She is just one of those frumpy types that dress slovenly while pregnant. Men even though they might not say it…hate that.

  14. Hautie says:

Well after seeing those naked pictures of Blake Lively on Ben’s phone… maybe she is feeling a little insecure. 🙂

    (it’s a joke!)

    Maybe.

    hahaha!

  15. Sam2577 says:

I don’t believe this story because Jennifer has never cared about her appearrance.

  16. CT says:

@4Real I am totally one of those women because I refuse to spend money on a wardrobe that I’m only going to wear for four months one time.

Truth. Maternity clothes are a racket!!!

  17. Amy says:

Yeah Jennifer has been dressing the way she dresses for years–way before she got together with Ben Affleck. She dressed this way when she got papped when she was dating her former Alias costar Michael Vartan AND all the while she dated Ben. So Ben wasn’t tricked into anything lol, he knew what he was getting into.

  18. Liz says:

My goodness, that daughter is cute. And I want her glasses.

  19. Embee says:

It could be partially a regional thing, too. I noticed while I lived in the South that women tended to dress for errand-running, but not so where I’m from (MD).

  20. Heather says:

I respectfully disagree that she has been dressing this way since before Ben.

There is a difference between dressing “casually” (when running errands, etc.) and dressing “downright frumpy.” I mean, yes, she was photographed looking casual pre-Ben, but there appeared to be actual thought put into her casual ensembles, and it also looked like perhaps she had glanced into a mirror prior to exiting the house. There used to also be times when she dressed downright sexy. Now, I am afraid I cannot say that she looks casually cute at all…ever. She just looks like a “mom” who does not even own a mirror…and sexy? Ha.

Google, “Jennifer Garner and Michael Vartan,” and you will see what I mean. She has major potential that she is wasting, IMO.

  21. Samara says:

Remember that shot when she was filling her car and her knickers were all ripped… I think she’s loathe to spend money on herself or clothes… maybe Ben is really mean with money

  22. Chrissy says:

I think Samara is on to something about the money. I don’t think she spends much on her clothes. Maybe it has to do with Ben’s past as a big gambler. She is sloppy with her clothes, doesn’t seem to wear much makeup on a daily basis, or do her hair, etc. However, she has been known even before she had kids as one who really worried about weight and worked out excessively so I do buy this story despite how messy she always looks. She may be one of those conceited women who thinks she’s “naturally pretty” and doesn’t need alot of makeup or hair styling. Or maybe I’m biased ’cause I’m not too fond of her. Her kids are cute though and they always look pretty nice.

  23. Blithe says:

Who DOESN’T worry about weight gain when they’re pregnant? I sure know I did. The more you gain, the more likely you’ll have some diabetic problems and *gasp!!!* stretch marks. Also, being in shape helps you with an all natural birth, and studies show that it’s healthy for your baby, too. From what I understand, you can continue your current workout when you’re pregnant as long as your body was comfortable at that level of strain BEFORE you were pregnant. As in, if it’s normal for you to run 6-12 miles everyday, doing so is fine when you’re pregnant. But (if I’m correct), adding to that amount or trying to “work up” to more strain is highly frowned upon, and can be dangerous. My mother ran with me until she was 8 months, and grew too front-heavy to be able to carry herself all those miles. As long as you’re gaining the right amount during your pregnancy, which I think is somewhere along the lines of 30-35 lbs, then you’re perfectly fine to exercise.

  24. Kelly says:

I think she looks fine, nothing wrong with the way she dresses. I just don’t like her and I’m hoping she retires once she has this kid so we don’t have to hear about her anymore.

  25. filthycute says:

What an insidious attempt at controlling women’s choices. Magazines are whores.

  26. Nancy says:

When you show me one picture of ANY of Matt Damon’s kids actually SMILING – then you can criticize Jennifer Garner’s parenting skills. Lucy Bozan (PR name International Interior Designer Luciana Barrosso) couldn’t miss a red carpet photo op on the very same day that THREE of her kids started school – but it’s college educated, gainfully employed Jen Garner’s parenting skills you are questioning? Really? WHO ARE YOU PEOPLE?

  27. Mae East says:

@Chrissy: I think you may be on to something with the “naturally pretty” comment. I’ve noticed lately that the lax beauty routine and minimal makeup that seemed to work for me when I had younger, more resilient skin is not cutting it anymore. Whereas I used to think I looked fresh, I’m now seeing that the same amount of makeup/lack of hair drying, etc. looks haggard and unkempt as I get older. I think JG just hasn’t accustomed herself to the fact that she is no longer so sparkling and dimply with a body that was so tight it probably didn’t matter to most men what awkward outfit was covering it at the moment.

  28. Emma says:

The woman owns/wears a tshirt out. Does she do it every time? No. Can’t believe it’s such a hot issue for people. Go to Target for 15 minutes. Are any of the moms in cargo pants or nike shorts? Uh yeah. Big friggin deal, let her breathe.

  29. Kosmos says:

Garner is a beautiful woman, very attractive. Another plus is that she’s a nice woman and very authentic, not trying to flaunt herself constantly like some do, so I really have always liked her. I’ve seen her very dressed up and classy and she can look amazing with a little makeup and a great dress. She seems to have a side that a real mom-type as well. Her casual style appears to be very down to earth. She doesn’t go for the sexy or flirty look at all. Her pants or jeans do not always look that flattering, and her overall style is kind of no nonsense. So, yes, she does not fit the typical look expectations of an attractive female in the movie business. But is this wrong? No, of course not. It’s who she is, who she wants to be, so we should allow her that.

  30. theaPie says:

This is how everyone dresses in California to go out and about (to the poster who said they would never go out dressed like this). I work at a college and this is all the kind of stuff we wear to work.

  31. eternalcanadian says:

I’ve never understood how or why Jennifer looks so fugly in clothes. She’s got money. She can get free clothes from designers. She can get a personal stylist. Heck her kids dress way better than her!

When she’s not on the red carpet and totally glammed up she always looks like she shops out of dumpsters–clothes so big and frumpy. And she’s worried about gaining weight during this third pregnancy? Methinks she should take a serious look in her closet and do a “What Not to Wear” show!
