Minka Kelly’s stripper mom wasn’t very maternal, but she sounds like a good time

This Minka Kelly Cosmo cover has been staring at me from the Cosmo promotional email for days, but I only just got around to reading some excerpts from the interview. Can I just say something? I’ve really started to like Minka Kelly. I think she’s cool, and she comes across as a lot smarter than the average starlet. I think she comes across as a street-smart girl because her childhood was pretty funky. Unlike all of the people who had relatively normal, well-adjusted childhoods and uneventful school experiences – those same people who try to convince us that they were always tortured and misunderstood and bullied – Minka’s childhood actually seems kind of rough. And in the occasional interview, Minka will give a glimpse into just how hard it was for her without coming out and laying on some massive pity party. Her mom was a stripper who loved to have a good time. Her mom would take her grocery shopping after mom came home from work early in the morning. Her mom thought they were friends. See? Rough.

Mom doesn’t always know best. In Minka Kelly’s case, she often had to be the responsible one growing up. In the October issue of Cosmopolitan magazine (as excerpted by the Daily Mail) Derek Jeter’s 31-year-old ex-girlfriend opens up about the “pretty complicated” relationship she had with her stripper mother, Maureen Kelly prior to her death in 2008.

“She was 5’11”,” the Charlie’s Angels star explains. “Legs up to her ears, gorgeous. She got along on that for as long as she could.”

Kelly says her mother would sometimes wake her up in the middle of the night when she got home from working at the strip club. The mother-daughter duo would then go to the supermarket shopping, and her mother wanted to take her to Payless to buy shoes.

“That was like our big Friday,” she recalls. “She would want me to skip school, ‘Let’s go spend some money!’… I was like ‘No, Mom, I’ve gotta go to school!'”

Kelly’s mother chose to raise her daughter as a single parent. The actress’ father, onetime Aerosmith guitarist Rick Dufay, “wanted to try the family thing,” but Kelly says her mom “was too busy having fun.”

“It wasn’t like he didn’t want to be part of our lives,” the Friday Night Lights star adds.

“I didn’t know how to appreciate what good friends we were,” Kelly admits. “Because I just wanted her to be my mom.”

Sadly, three years ago, Kelly’s mother died of colon cancer. “That’s detectable,” Kelly says. “Talk about being reckless and not paying attention to your body.”

Fortunately, the two made peace with one another before it was too late. “By the time she passed I was holding her,” Kelly says. “I was with her until her last breath. We made it.”

[From Us Weekly, The Mail]

Sad, right? It’s a wonder Minka is so well-adjusted. Her mom sounded like a really fun person to hang out with, though. Crazy.

Meanwhile, it’s pretty much established at this point that Minka dumped Derek Jeter for her costar, Ramon Rodriguez. They were photographed together (on-set) two seconds after Minka and Derek split, and even People Magazine and all of the more ass-kissy tabloids are saying that Minka and Ramon are a thing now.

Celebrities like her and Vanessa Manillo (and many more) have these rough upbringings are are perfectly well adjusted, and then we have Linnocent. Go figure.

  2. Missy says:

I used to work with Minka when she was in Albuquerque, NM. She is very smart and very sweet as well. I remember one time, she was hanging decorations on the ceiling, standing on a desk to reach it. I was watching her and I thought to look around and every single person in the room was in rapt attention, men and women.

  3. malia says:

she’s gorgeous, and that’s so lovely and heartbreaking at the same time, how she was there for her mom until the end(“we made it”). That’s a lot to go through, and I respect her for being honest about her childhood and upbringing without exploiting it for self promotion.

  4. Turtle Dove says:

Funny how ’round’ parents have ‘square’ kids, so to speak.

I’m sure that there’s a TON of stuff that she’s keeping to herself. Not to generalize, but I will anyway, many strippers have had very traumatic, abusive childhoods which contaminate their adult lives – drug and alcohol usage, promiscuity, inability to form functional relationships, etc. Glad to see that Minka’s life took a different direction.

Still wondering about the plane temper tantrum though…..

  5. lucy2 says:

That’s good she was able to see a different path for herself. I like her too.

Though she’s already involved with a costar on a show that’s just getting started? Bad idea.

Loved her in “Friday Night Lights”. She talked about her childhood, and dad, in a TV interview 2-3 yrs ago(Leno? Letterman?) and was terrific. Very matter-of-fact, not playing any card & not a hint of drama or whine. She has an innate dignity.

She seems very well grounded and likely to make good decisions for her own well-being & career.

  7. Kiki says:

She is one overrated actress. People overcome tough growing up situations all the time. I don’t think the comparision to Linnocent is fair (not that I’m defending Lohan by any chance), but Minka is facing celebrity life in her 30s. She’s just average to me, and this whole “my mom was a stripper” thing, she’s been using it for a while now, it’s not news and I always get the feeling that she wants people to feel sorry for her.

  8. Friday says:

I think Minka is one of the most gorgeous girls ever — natural 100% too!

I’m puzzled as to why Kaiser thinks Minka’s mom “sounds like a good time”? Um, having a fu**ed-up parent isn’t a good time for any child.

  9. Jen34 says:

Children with irresponsible parents often become the parent. I once had a 5th grade student whose mom was a go-go dancer. The girl was smart, mature and about as responsible as a 10 year old could be. She would sometimes miss school to care for her baby brother.

  10. HotPockets says:

    @ Missy.

I didn’t know Minka was from Albuquerque? I live there, as well. I don’t know too much about her, but she is gorgeous!

  11. Liamarie says:

a lot us us kids who grew up in difficult situations end up OK. I like her, she seems very grounded and real. And good on her for ditching Jeter.

  12. mzjask says:

i didnt really know who this chick was til the new charlies angel thing [which actually doesnt look as terrible as i expected it to be] lwt alone dating derek jeter for 3 years [who? lol]
she is just a lovely breath of fresh air and now that her career is on the rise i am hoping the best for her!

  13. Cleo says:

I love when hotties in their own right have STUNNING rock star babies like her and Liv Tyler. It’s so exciting and something to look forward to.

  14. Ren says:

Jeter is a total duche. I used to hostess at this upscale restaurant and he would come in there when the Yankees were in town playing – anyway – long story short – he would hook up with known high class hookers. How do I know they were hookers?? The girls would hang around the front desk and gossip with me and tell me crazy hooker stories hahaha! Yucky Jeter!!

  15. kazoo says:

ehhhh, she’s fake, boring, and can’t act. plus i’m gonna need her to stop throwing her dead mother under the bus just to get attention.

  16. Juliesunflower says:

Good she has left Jeter. Yucky man.
