Kate Winslet in red Elie Saab: love it or lump it?

Kate Winslet wore a very clingy red Elie Saab gown to last night’s Emmy Awards. The dress showcased those curves she’s constantly talking about, but she really worked it, in my opinion. She’s showing a hint of cleavage without hanging out, her hair and makeup are similarly understated but just right, and she accessorized with some gorgeous Cartier drop earrings and a two-tiered tennis bracelet. I know others will disagree, but I’m impressed with the dresses overall at the Emmys. There were plenty of simple, elegant non-fussy gowns in solid colors. Since I favor more conservative styles with clean lines most of them were just my style.

Kate won best actress for Mildred Pierce, with her costar Guy Pearce taking home the Emmy for outstanding supporting actor. I’ve seen both the original and the current HBO remake of Mildred Pierce, and while I enjoyed the miniseries I felt that they could have cut out about 1/3 of it, or nearly two hours, and not have lost much. It didn’t have the impact it could have. Maybe the pacing was consistent with the time period they were portraying. The scene where we finally get to see Evan Rachel Wood’s merkin was devastating though. I won’t reveal much in case any of you are waiting to see it, but that moment actually made me gasp out loud.

Kate thanked the cast and crew of “Mildred Pierce” during her speech. She said “This, really, I feel like had nothing to do with me – it was all you.” She also thanked her mother very graciously. “Mildred Pierce was capable of great acts of love as a mother, but she was also an extraordinary multi-tasker. To that end I actually do have to share this with my mum. It doesn’t matter how old you are or what you do in your life, you never stop needing your mum, and I will never stop needing mine. So thanks mom.”

During his acceptance speech for outstanding supporting actor, Kate’s co-star Guy Pearce joked that it was awesome to get to have pretend sex with her so many times. “This was really a delightful experience making Mildred Pierce. I got to have sex with Kate Winslet many many times. And I didn’t realise it was going to result in this. So Kate I share this with you because you’re an extraordinary woman, thank you, for allowing me to insert myself into your world of Mildred. And to my wife, Kate, who had to listen to me talk about that every day when I came home from work. Thank you my darling and I’m sorry.”

  1. Me says:

this is not a “hint of cleavage”.

I don’t like it at all. It doesn’t flatter any women, in my opinion, and it does show too much with a dress that is “not sexy”/ appropriate.

I can’t see how such “cleavage” is supposed to make anyone’s body look appealing.

    Sorry. It’s a miss.

  2. atlantapug says:

    Love the dress.

The hair is housewife circa 1988.

  3. Bite me says:

So simple, hair and makeup are a miss

  4. MB says:

Love all of it. She looks amazing!

  5. lucy2 says:

Like the gown, not crazy about the hair. Glad she won, she was great in MP, but I agree it was too long.

Also agree about the gowns, I too like simple, elegant, and bold colors. There were many nice gowns, but no standout, drop dead gorgeous ones.

  6. carrie says:

    so-so:nice color but enough bland

  7. chloe says:

I really like the dress and color, her hair not so much.

  8. Gigi says:

I love her and this dress, but I wish she would stop trying to fit herself into dresses which are too small. She ends up looking like she’s stuffed into a sausage casing.

  9. Kath & Kim says:

    She looks flawless.

  10. i.want.shoes says:

The dress is nice but not memorable.

  11. gee says:

I like the dress, but I don’t love that it’s bright red. The hair was eh, makeup was good. I really like the bottom of the dress and the neckline. It’s the sleeves I don’t love.

  12. BigHair&Pearls says:

Meh! And why does her face look so tight?

  13. Franny says:

I think this us the best she’s looked! And I thought her acceptance speech was cute. She was so excited

  14. L says:

I like Kate Winslet, so I’m predisposed to like the dress. But I agree about the hair-yikes.

As for her face, during her acceptance speech I thought that all of those rumors about all the work she’s supposed to have done. Her face looked normal and moved and had wrinkles and looked like kate’s face from a few years back. So I still think some of the pictures of kate’s work is about her pulling a blue steel in photographs.

But then again…I like her so….

  15. Kiki says:

She looked great and I loved her speech.

  16. bagladey says:

Love the dress but the hair and make-up are no good.

  17. Sweepea says:

Love the dressfrom the waist up.

I wish Kate would exercise some restraint when she’s accepting her awards. Stiff upper lip and all that.

  18. Danziger says:

Makeup and hair are a miss, the dress is gorgeous, especially on her body. I love it that she has gained a tiny bit of weight again, something I usually look down on. She wears her weight and curves so well. I like the way she ages. It’s bizarre in Hollywood, but Kate Winslet face-wise actually looks her age and will always do. That’s why I don’t like those shiny wax-face pictures I’ve seen of her, probably the result of that chemical peel.

She’s beautiful, she’s coarse, candid, lovely. She could show some restraint on her speeches, but she must’ve been genuinely happy, so. A bit sanctimonious at times, but since I love her so much, I’m willing to look over that.

  19. serena says:

Her makeup and hairstyle is greatly appropriated here. The dress is fine too, a bit boring but very classy.

  20. ThirdChris says:

It looks like she gained some weight back, thank goodness. I think she looks fabulous. The side shot of her hair is a little weird, but I think overall she looks great.

  21. Yasmin says:

    She really worked that dress

  22. Lisa says:

Love love love Kate Winslet. Very classy woman. She looked great!

  23. mamaT says:

    dress is gorgeous!!

  24. Amanda says:

She’s a beautiful woman and one of my favorite actresses. The color was very flattering, but I didn’t care for the dress.

  25. xxodettexx says:

personally i was in love with the color of the night [red!!!] my fav color! this dress was one of my favorites, along with nina dobrev’s gorgeous red dress….

  26. Melissa says:

    She looks great in red.

  27. Frieda says:

I like it. It’s too long, though.

  28. tracking says:

She finally got it right with this dress imo–lovely, sophisticated, flattering, form-fitting but not too tight–but not the hair and makeup unfortunately.

  29. Truthful says:

    she looks gorgeous!!!

  30. ladybert62 says:

Hate the dress – brush your hair girl, it needs brushing, styling and a decent cut. Overall, a mess.

  31. SEF says:

Pretty dressed but stuffed in it like a sausage.

Sweetpea: I agree! HATE when she acts that way when winning an award . . . it’s ungracious to the losers. Having bad flashbacks to the Oscars when she gloated so much.

  32. JaneWonderfalls says:

    She looks stunning.

  33. Christine says:

I love Kate, but her dresses always seem about an inch too tight.

  34. Lauren says:

I dont care what KW wears. She is my favorite actress..watch Little Children or The Reader. She is pure class and infinite talent.

  35. MacScore says:

I love her hair here! Soft, natural, a few strands framing her face – KW doesn’t seem like someone who would be really comfortable with tons of product in her hair or too severe a style (as she tried out in Venice), so for her, I think this really works. Dress: strong colour choice for her, but again, too tight! I love the fact that she’s not a skinny wraith, but dresses such as this and the V Beckham disaster from Venice are not doing her womanly figure any favours.

  36. kimmy says:

i love kate, so i can never out right hate what she’s wearing or saying. she is ALWAYS so genuinely gracious and excited when she wins awards. i would love to get a beer or glass of wine with her b/c she’d be so much fun to hang out with!

she does this shape alot and i think it makes her look more top heavy than she really is. not a big fan of her hair.

  37. Rabbit says:

Guy Pearce is unbelievably hot. Hot Guy Friday feature, please.

  38. Catherine says:

Classic, polished….I think she looked awesome.

  39. Turtle Dove says:

Now THIS is a dress. She hit it out of the park with this red frock. Nicely done.

  40. Madison says:

She looks great in this dress, she has the hips and boobs to look really great in a dress like this.

  41. Sunlily says:

She looks beautiful, but I have a t-shirt cut like the top of that dress that I wear grocery shopping.

  42. Camille says:

    I think she looked great.

  43. crtb says:

Too much red! Needs a black belt.

  44. LittleDeadGrrl says:

I’m not a big fan of a red dress, especially on a red carpet but it’s not bad and actually makes her look sexy.

  45. Vicki. says:

    Shut up! She’s perrrfect

  46. Bobbie says:

She looks gorgeous! I’ve hated the last few dresses she wore- here she looks skinny, beautiful and young.

  47. Rose says:

Kate Winslet is a fantastic actress, great person, and gorgeous. This dress suits her perfectly. She can do no wrong in my eyes!

  48. Penguin says:

Didn’t like the dress made her look broad shouldered and flat chested which she is neither. Colour washed her out and her hair looked a mess.

  49. Amanda G says:

I think of all the red dresses last night, this one was my least favorite. Very dull.

  50. smh says:

sorry but her face looks fug and she wears a dumb expression all the time. years ago she looked ok but botox ruins everyone. i don’t know why people keep getting it. i know ppl irl getting botox and everyone secretly thinks they look weird but they do not tell them. better to age gracefully.
