Melissa McCarthy in her own design: lovely, flattering or meh?

wenn3520634

I was surprised and delighted to see Melissa McCarthy crowned Comedy Queen last night. I wasn’t aware that Melissa’s starring role, in Mike & Molly, was even that popular, but I suspect that more people are paying attention to Melissa because of her hilarious, scene-stealing, righteous supporting part in Bridesmaids. So Melissa won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy, and the women of the category were wonderful about the lead up to the award announcement – when their names were called, all of them ran up to the stage and held hands, pageant-girl-style. I loved that the room gave the funny ladies a standing ovation too – those women totally deserve it. Anyway, I was expecting Tina Fey or Amy Poehler to win, so when Melissa’s name was called, I think everybody was surprised. I loved that all of the other ladies were so sweet to her too, and she got lots of hugs and even a tiara and some roses. It was great.

As for the fashion…Melissa designed her own gown! Apparently, before she began her career in comedy, Melissa had come to NYC to go to fashion school. And for her big Emmy night, Melissa couldn’t find a dress she liked, so she simply made her own. Melissa told reporters, “I designed it. I didn’t see anything that I really liked out there. I went to college for clothing and textiles and always thought I would design women’s clothing and ended up in New York going to MIT and ended up doing standup.” I think she probably wanted to wear a pretty color, a flattering neckline and she wanted sleeves, and that’s pretty difficult to find in her size. So… the dress was good for what it was, a flattering dress that Melissa designed herself for her big night. She looked comfortable and pretty, I think.

Note: please don’t come in here and concern-troll Melissa about her weight. Yes, she’s a big woman. She’s also hilarious and talented and she had a great night.

I have love Melissa since Gilmore girls… Love the color of the dress

  2. Anne says:

    Congratualtions on her win.

The dress suits her. No surprise she couldn’t find anything she liked in her size. I’m glad she didn’t give a big name designer the opportunity to make a dress for her, whilst not making clothes for other women with the same figure.

  3. chloe says:

i loved her since Gilmore Girls, I like the color of the dress.

  4. DarkEmpress says:

As we all know from warching many seasons of Project Runway; being able to design something does not mean you will be able to sew it! WWTGS!?( What would Tim Gunn Say) It is poorly executed!!! I too love to design but sew.. Leave that to the tailor!

  5. BigHair&Pearls says:

I have always loved her! I like the colour on her, but I don’t like the design or the fabric. It’s too loose around the shoulders and cleavage and the finish is all over the place. She’s naturally boobtastic, this dress should’ve showcased them!

  6. Marianne says:

This really seemed like it was the year of Emmy surprises lol. But it was nice to not see the usual suspects take the stage.

  7. htk says:

The color is very pretty and I appreciate that the dress has pockets. Pockets are so underrated.

  8. Lama says:

I like the color on her. It makes her eyes pop, but I think there are some construction issues. The darts make her boobs look pointy, the stitching looks a bit like a quilt, and the arms have too much fabric. The waist looks good though.

  9. teehee says:

Actually that creates a great shape on her- makes a beautiful form. Well done!

  10. Jenn says:

regardless of size, one should try to dress to flatter their figure… Melissa did not succeed.

  11. carrie says:

great color but if the sleeves were more tightened,it would look well better
in fact, the dress is good on her

  12. Winnie says:

I thought she looked pretty, but I didn’t like the necklace.

  13. bagladey says:

I don’t like the dress; I think the fit is awful and it’s very poorly made.

  14. gee says:

I think if the shoulder wasn’t as wide.. maybe it’s the doleman sleeve. She looks so pretty though and she seems so sweet. I’m really happy she won, even if I was rooting for Martha Plimpton (who looked phenomenal!!).

  15. Yasmin says:

I love Melissa. I’m glad she won

  16. teri says:

    So happy for her 🙂

  17. Brina says:

    I think she looks great!!!

I’m impressed with her self-confidence and her ability to recognize what she wanted and didn’t want in her clothing and NOT settle for something just because of the size, she should be an inspiration to everyone!!!

My impression of her is that of a warm, funny and caring woman, and its good to see that no matter what she goes after what she wants!!!

  18. ThirdChris says:

htk: I absolutely agree. I can’t stand not having pockets.

  19. Sue says:

She looks very pretty and happy!

  20. serena says:

Yay! So happy she won! I’ve loved her since Gilmore Girls. Anyway I don’t like the sleeves, but the dress is ok.

  21. aenflex says:

Colour is great, but too much fabric. She could be wrapped a little tighter and with a better fitting form.

  22. Kathy says:

Glad she won, such a breath of fresh air, esp. in Hollywood!

  23. Esmom says:

I’ve never seen her show but holy cow she was brilliant in Bridesmaids. I think she had the right idea with the dress but the execution was a bit off. The color is perfect for her.

  24. Amanda says:

Glad she won. I loved her on Gilmore Girls, too. However, I wasn’t crazy about the dress. The color was beautiful, but the dress itself was not very flattering.

  25. Darlene says:

I love her in this color, but I don’t find the waistline flattering. It’s all bunched up! The fabric looks too heavy for her.

  26. unbeweavable says:

I love her as an actress and all the roles I have seen her in. I’m glad she isn’t trying to be some crazy anorexic like 90% of women in Hollywood. She has confidence and carries herself well! I definitely look up to her!

I also think the dress looks great on her. The color and cut work well for her body type. The fact that she designed it herself makes me admire her more!

  27. Franny says:

I LOVED that they ran on stage. When Amy first ran up there, I was like…ok funny, but when are you going to leave? And then the rest joined! It was great.

  28. Maritza says:

She looks great! I love Mike&Molly the show is really funny, she deserved to win. At least she has another profession to fall back on if the acting doesn’t work. She can design for full figured women.

  29. Frieda says:

I’m a big fan of purple, but when you are a full-figured woman, you invite comparisons to Barney.

  30. Ell says:

I’ve loved her since the Gilmore Girls, glad she’s enjoying so much success.

Not that I would ever mention anyone’s weight personally, but I’m gob-smacked at the order given not to discuss her weight. If you’re going to start with these kind of rules, they should apply to every celeb/royal not just the people you like personally Kaiser!

  31. cherryberry says:

As funny as I found her in Bridesmaids, I think Amy should have won. Parks and Rec is a much funnier show and Leslie Knope is a hilarious character. I think Melissa won b/c of Bridesmaids and not Mike and Molly.

  32. miss_bhaven says:

Ehhhhh, gads, its hideous! Makes her shape even worse.

  33. Incognita says:

Although Melissa’s dress coloring was questionable and the construction left a lot to be desired, I am glad she detoured from the mumu-styled dresses full-figured women opt to wear on the red carpet. She should have taken the lead from Loretta Divine who wore a dress that complimented her figure last night.

  34. lucy2 says:

Love the color on her, but not crazy about the construction of it. Cool that she did her own thing though.
I was rooting for Amy or Martha (who looked awesome, I loved her dress) but I’ve loved Melissa since Gilmore Girls and am thrilled for her. I couldn’t get into her show, but I’m really happy she’s having so much success.

The comedy ladies were hilarious, doing their pageant thing! What a solid category, all of them were really great.

  35. That girl says:

Love her. She looks happy and beautiful!

  36. Mare says:

I don’t mind nice article and nice comments. I think we should be nice and not write ugly things about other people on the internet. But what I do mind is going to Gwyneth Paltrow article and reading how awful Gwyneth looks?! Am I blind?

  37. ladybert62 says:

    Dont like the dress.

  38. k says:

She went to MIT or FIT?

  39. Justaposter says:

Count me as a lover since Gilmore Girls also!

  40. MorticiansDoItDeader says:

She has the confidence and personality to pull off a burlap sack! I have yet to see bridesmaids, but she is adorable in Mike and Molly.

“I’m gob-smacked at the order given not to discuss her weight. If you’re going to start with these kind of rules, they should apply to every celeb/royal not just the people you like personally Kaiser!”

    @Ell, co-sign!

  41. lucky says:

i actually really like the dress, as in I would happily war it in a size 6/8…. fabric, cut and all!

  42. photo jojo says:

I think it’s a great color for her, but I wish she had belted it or given it some sort of contrast at the waist to define her a little bit. But that’s just me, I didn’t go to fashion school or anything. 🙂

  43. lolas says:

I met her at a fabric store in LA (I actually didn’t know who she was at first, she looked very unassuming and was buying fabric with her mom, and was very helpful with sewing advice) and she was lovely, and without any makeup on at all and she has beautiful skin and eyes. Her mom was saying she loves to sew, but I didn’t know she studied fashion. That being said, I do not think this dress does her any favours. The colour is too heavy for her and I think makes her look bigger than she actually is. She’s a big girl, but she can still look fabulous. When the girl who played Precious was at the Academy awards I thought she looked fantastic, so this isn’t a weight thing. (and agree with Ell, btw).

  44. Trillion says:

She would’ve looked a lot better, I think, if she’d done something big on top to balance her out. Like bigger hair and some awesome jewelry to bring the eye UP to her pretty face. That hair is just sad and limp and makes the rest of her seem even larger. Regardless of my opinion on that matter, congratulations to her.

  45. Denver Danni says:

I agree with Bite Me, love her since GG. She totally STOLE Bridesmaids. The conversations between myself and my friends about the movie – all about her.

  46. Heatheradair says:

Best accessories for just about any red carpet are a huge smile and a great attitude — and Melissa had the perfect amount of both. She looked radiant, the color’s great, she was having a terrific evening — a winner, all around.

  47. RocketMerry says:

Yay! I like her. She seems sweet and she’s very pretty. Congrats!

  48. velourazure says:

she should have hooked up with bradley bayou. he always seems to be able to make oprah look about 20 lbs smaller.

  49. Callli Pygian says:

She is fab. Not so for the cut & color of this dress.

The color just seems to…? fade away on her. More jewel -like, less dark?

Do. Not. Like. tiered fabric for her.

  50. KO says:

Her role as Sookie on Gilmore Girls was spot-on. She was fantastic. It’s incredibly wonderful to see her get an Emmy for her Molly role!!

  51. KsGirl says:

From the boobs down, I heart this dress and the colour is FAB (that’s not a Barney purple at all!) – the shoulders seem slightly off, maybe, as someone else mentioned, a dolman sleeve? Either way I think it is very cool that she made her own dress. And yes, she was great in Bridesmaids.

  52. Catherine says:

I loved her back in her Gilmore Girls days but I think she looked awful last night with the hair falling in her eyes, sweaty and stuffed into her dress. She is gorgeous and I wish for her health that she would lose some weight. It almost looks painful for her.

  53. Susie #1 says:

Love Mike & Molly, so glad she won! She looks great in the color and the dress is fine except for the batwing sleeves. With her arms out it looks like it fits, but when her arms are close to her body the bodice and sleeves look too loose. It was her night, her design, and I hope she enjoyed it all. So pretty!

  54. Memphis says:

I’ve been a fan of hers since Gilmore Girls, so I’m happy she won. But I was surprised and from the look on her face when they announced it, so was she! I think her role in Bridesmaids may have had more to do with it than her role as Molly, but either way I’m happy for her. Anyway..I love the color on her but the dress itself was meh, and I wish she would have done something different with her hair.

  55. Madison says:

Classy and elegant a woman who dressed for her body shape, she looks great.

  56. kay says:

    Love the dress.

But it’s getting to the point where I am skipping the posts Kaiser writes. You used to be so funny! But now it seems so bitter, and why is this girl given a pass for her weight? This site went to town on Gabby. And Kim. And… pretty much EVERY celeb out there.

  57. podzol says:

@Kay (poster 55): I have to agree with everything you said in your second paragraph, sadly :(. It’s really unfortunate.

  58. palermo says:

I get why she wanted it tight underneath the boobs, but sadly that just made her stomach look even larger. I have to say fail on this dress.

  59. palermo says:

P.S. I admit I didn’t read the admonition not to discuss her weight before I posted. I could stand to lose some myself, but I have to say it’s not right to say we can’t discuss her weight when we talk smack about everybody else, be that fat or thin. Equal opportunity snark I say.

  60. JaneWonderfalls says:

Don’t like it. I understand she played it safe probably because of her weight but she would have looked amazing if she would have shorting the dress and cut the sleeves shorter mid arm. Plus size women can take chances too! But I like her make up and I think she is beautiful.

  61. Kloops says:

Love her. From some angles the dress looks ok but from others it’s pretty bad. She could look better.

  62. hatsumomo says:

Well, I think it was a crap executed dress. The color looked as though it had promise against her coloring and would have been beautiful- in another fabric. That cloth just looked too ‘rough’ and coupled with the bad stitching made it look..not very great. But it was a nice violet hue, I would wear that color-in a different dress.

  63. Victoria says:

That chick is beautiful, that dress is not. Monique is somewhat who always represented well for the full-figured ladies, and she did a lot of her own designs so Jenny and Mo should work together.

    Loved her on GG.

  64. Jennifer says:

Congratulations to her! I have not seen her in bridesmaids , that will be delayed gratification. I love her in Mike and Molly, the episode of the first date when she was already off her face on the cold medication then drinking wine was so funny. I was crying rolled up on the floor with laughter it was so true. I am sure she won the Emmy for that performance alone

  65. LittleDeadGrrl says:

Don’t really love the dress. Love the color on her and the neckline but I think the sleeves look a bit puffy.

  66. Lucinda says:

She is extremely funny in Mike and Molly so she totally deserved the win. I love her.

  67. Confuzzle says:

It looks like she pulled a Sound of Music and made it from bedding or curtains.

  68. Amanda G says:

I think it’s too much fabric and would have been better sleeveless (if she can pull that off). I’m very happy for her success. I really need to check out that show!

  69. ShanKat says:

The fit through the shoulders is terrible. It makes her look like a linebacker. I get the fabric, it covers bumpy parts. But it’s graceless.

But I love her and it’s close! The necklace is fantastic.

Now, about the droopy hair and blue eye makeup…

  70. Kiki says:

Yeah, she’s heavy. People come in all shapes and sizes and that’s the way it should be.

  71. Bec says:

Well she better get ready designing her dress for the OSCARS! I know the Academy is famous for not nominating anyone for comedy, and especially in raunchy-silly comedy, but I’ve had this strange feeling all year that she’s going to get a nom for Best Supporting Actress for Bridesmaids. It is HER movie, she completely made it what it is and she is having an incredible year. Will be curious what she wears to awards ceremonies in the future because this win just catapulted her into a whole other stratosphere: She might choose to design her own dress again or she might have an entire new ‘tier’ of couture designers begging to design her next gown! 🙂

  72. Ashley says:

My drapes look better than this dress, this woman should hit the gym…stop supporting obesity, it is not healthy

  73. Mourning the Death of Music says:

I’m just not digging the dress. Especially the ‘quilt-like’ lines.

  74. Molly says:

I love this woman! She is so comfortable with herself and I think that makes others comfortable with her. She rocks!

  75. Andrea says:

I enjoy her work so I was particularly disappointed in her appearance. Her hair, the jewelry, the sheet of a dress. All bad and too bad, she could easily have looked better in just a nice pair of slacks and jacket.
