Julie Bowen in metallic Oscar de la Renta: hot mess or pretty decent?

wenn3520944

Here’s the thing about Julie Bowen: I actually like her a great deal, I think she’s pretty and she’s a gifted actress and comedienne, and I almost always love her interviews, so she’s a pretty interesting and intelligent woman too. BUT… her style is almost always horrendous. Like, she’s one of the few ladies that I always know is going to mess up her red carpet look. So, when you come into it thinking, “Damn, I bet Julie Bowen looks like hell tonight,” you can actually be nicely surprised when she puts in some effort to look styled and pretty.

So Julie wore this metallic grey-black-pewter Oscar de la Renta gown… which I actually like. I was on the phone with my mom, and she absolutely hated the whole look, though. I think lots of women identify with Julie Bowen, and with her Modern Family character, and they expect her to really bring it, style-wise, to awards shows. Maybe they don’t realize that Julia doesn’t really know what looks good on her, but I give her credit for trying, and I do think she’s improving. My mom’s biggest problem with this look was that Julie looks too thin, Julie’s “too old” (my mom’s words) to wear a deep-V-neck gown, and lastly, Julie’s HAIR. I dislike the hair too, but it’s not as bad as it’s been before. I think Julie just has hair issues, and she doesn’t know what to do with it for the red carpet. So we get this little flat-ironed ponytail… ugh. Just put it in a bun, Julie.

My biggest problem? Julie’s makeup, always and forever. She wears too much makeup on Modern Family, and she wears too much in real life and on the red carpet. If you wiped all of that crap off of her face, I suspect you would find a very naturally pretty and young-looking woman.

Congrats to Julia and Ty Burrell on their Outstanding Supporting Actor and Actress wins for Modern Family. I LOVE how many awards Modern Family is getting, because I think it’s the smartest and funniest sitcom in a long time. I always that Julie Bowen must get tired of Sofia Vergara getting all of the attention from the show, but apparently Emmy voters are bigger fans of Claire and Phil.

You mean that her style is usually worse than this??? GAH!

And I love Phil and Claire too — Ty Burrell has a great timing for comedy. I absolutely adore Modern Family.

Honestly my husband’s first reaction to that dress was ‘well at least I know her boobs are real’

Mine was that I dislike it when really thin girls wear these dresses and you can see all the bones in their chest. Harder to tell in pics, but on the tv last night? Ouch.

  3. gee says:

A little severe, but very pretty. She was very gracious too, big bonus points.

  4. Cherry Rose says:

Hate it. Does not flatter her body at all.

  5. carrie says:

    @CherryRose: agree with you

  6. BigHair&Pearls says:

These over-exercised Hollywood arms actually make women look older than they are. Enough already, don’t try so hard.

  7. bagladey says:

    She looks okay.

  8. cecilia says:

She reminds me strongly of Gwyneth Paltrow in these pictures.

  9. Esmom says:

Love her and Ty on MF. And how cute was Ty’s acceptance speech? As for her look, I’m not a fan of the dress but she looks a smidge healthier these days, not quite as rail thin. I also agree she should go for more natural, less overdone makeup.

  10. someone says:

i don’t know about the makeup thing…maybe cause i hardly know anything about fashion/makeup but it doesn’t really look like she wears a lot of makeup? or i don’t know like i said, i’m not exactly an expert in that field

  11. Kathy says:

Too thin, but I like her and the show

  12. mamaT says:

very unflattering dress. she is way too thin to have that deep V cut. its just nasty looking.

that said, i love her and ty andam glad they won

  13. Jana says:

If you have bad cleavage, please avoid the low cut gowns…it only makes it worse!

  14. Amanda says:

I didn’t care for the dress and I wish she would put on some weight. I agree with some of the other comments about her arms. They make her look masculine. She is very pretty, but I think her whole “look” was off last night.

  15. Darlene says:

Her breasts look HORRIBLE in that dress. She has a good shape as long as she’s covered up, but if she’s bare, she needs 5-10 lbs on her frame. I saw her once in a bikini, and it was truly unfortunate.

  16. Sue says:

I think the dress looks great on her.

If we shouldn’t talk about Melissa Mccarthy who I love weight then why is it ok to talk about Julie Dowen weight she had a great night too and far is far.

  17. Frieda says:

My husband is crazy about her, but he was distressed last night to see her so skinny, and even he hated the bare-to-the-waist neckline.

  18. curleque says:

She looks like a skinny 12-year-old girl trying on Mom’s fancy dresses.

  19. Nic says:

I truly thought this was Gwyneth Paltrow at first glance. So weird.

  20. Incognita says:

Julie really needs to lay off those cheeseburgers!

  21. cherryberry says:

@cecilia & @nic- I am feeling you on the Goop thing. Between the deep V in the gown and that lank flat ironed blond hair, the comparison is obvious.

  22. Jen34 says:

ITA with your mom. I do love Julie Bowen, though, and (unfortunately) relate to Claire on the show.

  23. lucy2 says:

I don’t like it, but I actually like it for her, if that makes any sense.
I do think she keeps herself a bit too thin. Can I give her 5-10 of my lbs? 😀

Glad she and Ty won, and Modern Family. I was rooting for Parks & Rec but love MF too. As long as it wasn’t Glee!

  24. ladybert62 says:

The only thing I do like is the hair.

  25. Susie #1 says:

The dress looks like it needed a safety pin where it fell open. Love how Julie is funny and natural in interviews. Her make up looks fine to me, especially for the Emmys.

  26. The Bobster says:

If she had any boobs at all, that outfit would’ve made the show r-rated.

  27. SEF says:

Actually the boobs are not real! She paid for ’em and she’s showing ’em off. She is really pretty but looking a little beef jerky (thin and wiry) nowadays.

  28. Kat says:

The hair is too severe, much like the makeup. It’s a pretty dress, but it looks like an ill-fitting shower curtain on her. Probably not the dress for a woman of her very slim, athletic frame.

  29. Annie says:

She is pretty, but if deep cleavage shows a bony breastplate as opposed to breasts, it’s not a good look. She needs about 10 pounds to soften her, and even then probably shouldn’t wear this deep a eve. Bones are just not sexy.

  30. Christine says:

I love her. LOVE HER. But she could look better if I styled her. And I’m a lawyer with no fashion sense.

  31. FitnFeisty says:

When Julie stood up from her seat I literally cringed because she was so thin. And I myself am obsessed with being thin so for ME to say that means she is realllllllly skinny. If she’s going to stay that size she should at least wear a dress that covers her bones. Being able to see her implants move under her skin and all of her bones made me shudder in my living room.

  32. kibbles says:

She looks anorexic and she has nothing to show off in the chest area. I agree with your mom; she shouldn’t have worn a V-neck gown and no sleeves which accentuates her flat chest and her skeletal figure. She needs padding and an outfit that adds on pounds to her frame. This does nothing for her.

  33. 4Real says:

Let’s just say I love her on Modern Family and congratulate her for her BIG win.

  34. april says:

Hate the dress. I guess I don’t see that she wears too much make up in these photos. I don’t watch the show so I don’t know what her make up is like otherwise.

  35. Madison says:

A big mess from head to toe. Dress looks awful on her because she’s too skinny and doesn’t have the boobs to fill out the top, she would have looked better wearing the blue metallic dress claire danes wore. What’s with the hair it’s the emmy’s not her son’s soccer game. 2 out of 10.

  36. JaneWonderfalls says:

Not impressive. It’s not horrible but gosh they really did not have any Great Outfits, the only one I can say was unique was Heidi Klum’s 1

  37. Kim says:

Love her – hate the dress. The low cut in front style looks bad on every body type esp if you have no chest. This style needs to be permanently retired.

  38. Sandra says:

It looks like the dress doesn’t fit at all – it’s a size or two too big. If it fit properly, I think it would look quite nice. Is it just me, or does her TV hubby look really uncomfortable and keeping his distance from her?

  39. Mrs.Darcy says:

Yes she’s thin but I think it’s more a body type thing, that bony chest is something some women have no matter their weight, her arms look toned and not totally scrawny to me. Skinny (looking) is not always a good thing, wish someone would have told her that.I actually think her makeup is pretty, the hair is pretty meh though.

  40. crtb says:

Neckline is to low. She needs to gain weight. and wear a better bra. Boney chest is not flattering.

  41. MellaYellow says:

    She looks to toned.

  42. Kelly says:

Ya the hair is bad but in all she looks pretty.

  43. MB says:

Just when DID she get so thin, anyway? I could have sworn that she had a bit more meat on her bones when she was in Boston Legal. Never fat, just not as skeletal as she is now.

Anyway, the dress isnt bad I just think it would have looked a lot better on someone not so thin. That said, she seems like a really nice person in real life so good for her and her win! 😀

  44. Emily says:

@MB, I remember her being less skinny on Boston Legal, too. I thought she was the hottest character on that show, after Shirley Schmidt of course. I still think she’s pretty, but I wish she’d gain a bit of weight back.
