New trailer for ‘Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’: does it reveal too much?

dragon11

The new, full-length trailer has come out for the American version of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. We’ve seen various incarnations of the first teaser trailer (here and here) which… they made me excited for the film, just because I’m interested in seeing what David Fincher brings to the table that we haven’t already seen in the Swedish films. In this new trailer, it definitely looks like Fincher “borrowed” some stuff from the Swedish films, but I have to say… he’s got a completely different take on the script. There are enough “spoilers” in this trailer to make me realize that Fincher has veered away from the books to varying degrees. Is that I good thing? I don’t know. This trailer isn’t making me that excited for the film, though:

Random thoughts:

*BANGS TRAUMA. The way Rooney Mara’s itty-bitty bangs tragedy has been cut to frame her ghostly pale face… it’s just spooky. Yes, Lisbeth could look “otherworldly”. But Mara looks like a hobgoblin you would find living in the sewer system.

*Funky accent work all around. Rooney Mara’s accent is supposed to be Swedish, but she sounds like Bjork? Daniel isn’t even trying.

*Daniel does look damn good, though. I don’t think he’s necessarily right for the part (I think of Mikael as a Swedish Harrison Ford), but Daniel is definitely going to be HOT in this role.

*Robin Wright is barely around, and when she is, she’s wearing a tank top and doing a British accent?

*Julian Sands as a young Christopher Plummer? That’s a good one.

*Some of the shots and setups are carbon copies of the Swedish film’s. You should really go back and watch the Swedish films, if only for Noomi Rapace’s performance.

*The way Lisbeth and Mikael meet face-to-face for the first time is all wrong. That alone pisses me off.

*Ugh.

The book was great, the Swedish film, not bad. This re-make looks terrible.
I hate it when they ruin a good book with a bad movie

  2. ShanKat says:

I think, when a movie is based on such a widely read book, they allow a little less suspense in the advertising. The aim would be to promote differences in style and tone, and the small liberties the film makers took with the beloved source material.

It’s a tough thing to pull off, I’m interested to see how it turns out.

Danny boy will rock it to death.

  3. Kaye says:

Noomi Rapace was amazing in the three Swedish films. Rooney Mara has some very big shoes to fill.

  4. jen says:

I’ll stick with the Swedish films, which are excellent.

  5. Lisa says:

I dedicated a good portion of a day with my guy watching this series straight through…as we were watching it…I said that it should be re-made for one reason only…NO ONE GOT TO REALLY SEE THE ORIGINAL (which is tragic)…even then, I said the only director who could do it was David Fincher (who’s career I called when he did the NIN video years ago)…

I think we should calm down…David is the right director…and the casting is so Eurocentric, I don’t think we have to worry about the “The Point of No Return” tragedy that happened when they Americanized “La Femme Nikita”

  6. claire says:

Well, it is exactly how the meet in the book. He brings her breakfast, let himself in, and she’s completly taken aback and defensive.

  7. RovingLass says:

    @Lisa

I really hope you are right with this movie adaptation. At least I have an excuse for a tub of popcorn.

“The Point of No Return” was just mind numbing and Bridget Fonda was laughable as an assassin. Why not just watch the original? Luc Besson is brilliant.

  8. Jackie says:

Why have they made Lisbeth so ugly in the big Hollywood version? In the Swedish version, she was a little weird looking but had ok hair and eyebrows!

  9. the original bellaluna says:

Having read the book, no it’s not too revealing.

That being said, I’ll only see it if it comes on cable.

  10. RobN says:

Am I the only person who read the books and pictured Sam Ronson when they described Lisbeth?

  11. Quest says:

I loved the book, the Swedish adaptation was good but this seem strayed a bit but not that bad. Lisbeth Salander who was played by Noomi Rapace, was an expert but antisocial hacker which seems apparent in this trailer as well. I would have to wait till it comes out on DVD.

  12. Ashley says:

I’ll actually go and see this in theaters. I read the book, and I liked it, but I certainly wouldn’t put it as a favorite. For me, it became a bit too predictable on the home stretch. The Swedish version was good, but I had a very specific image of Lisbeth in my head which Noomi Rapace did not entirely fit. Judging on pure aesthetics (acting will remain to be seen), Rooney Mara better fits Lisbeth for me.

  13. Jen D says:

I’m going to give it a shot. Loved the books, loved the movie, but after watching this trailer I’m hoping that some of the scenes cut in the Swedish movie will make an appearance on the American version. It’s been awhile, but I seem to remember being disappointed that the Swedish movie downplayed the relationship between Erica Berger and Mikke. It’s such a detailed book that I think you can easily have a pretty different take on it.

I’m wondering what people who haven’t read the book or seen the movie think of this trailer. I feel like it could get a bit confusing….

  14. Jen D says:

One little gripe – I don’t like the poster with his arm around Lisbeth. It doesn’t feel right for the movie or who Lisbeth is.

  15. cbreader says:

Looks a lot like the Swedish movie, which was amazing (and really didn’t need to be redone but this one looks good too).

As far as Rooney’s accent: I think she did it well. My grandma and very close cousin are both Swedish and she sounded like them.

  16. Claire says:

For the poster, it’s comprehensible. The minute Blomkvist meet Lisbeth he’s compelled to her, with the desire to protect her. But he’s in the back, she’s the main character, she leads. It’s not a macho thing, he’s protecting her as much as she protects him.
The problem with Noomi Rapace is that she didn’t have this extremely fragile look that Lisbeth has. People think Lisbeth is 17 when they see her for the first time, and something is off in her face, that’s why people believe they can take advantage of her, she looks stupid. Noomi Rapace was good, but she wasn’t the character, at all, physically. The eyebrows thing is an excellent idea, gives her a dazed look, it’s perfect.

  17. Sallyone says:

The actress from the origanla movie look way better…thats how I pictured her looking when reading the book

  18. Jen D says:

Hmm, I guess everyone can interpret things differently, but I never got the protective vibe, at least not in the first book. If anything, she seemed more protective of him. I mean, he obviously cared for her, but…. the poster just seems a little macho. Anyways, I’m totally just nitpicking. I’m looking forward to the movie.

  19. Pia says:

It’s been a while since I watched the Swedish movie, but didn’t it skip over the other murders altogether? Perhaps I’m misremembering. If that’s the case, this one seems closer to the book.

  20. Jen D says:

    @ Pia

I vaguely remember them, but it was washed over a bit…. They were definitely mentioned, but I don’t think it was a major plot point.

  21. sauvage says:

Nah. I read the books a couple of weeks back and – nah to the trailer.

  22. Kaligula says:

@Kaye… My thoughts exactly. This remake is obviously a money grab. & Ms. Mara is too tall for one thing. All the eyeliner in the world, she’ll still never hold a candle to Noomi Rapace. Next thing you know they’ll be remaking “Casablanca”. With, let me guess, JLo attempting Ms. Bergman’s part. (actually i really think i heard about such a project at some point). Ha! Anyway I would never see this, it’s just unnecessary.

  23. Amy says:

Ooh, I spotted Goran Visnjic. So happy to see his pretty face working in films.

  24. the original bellaluna says:

Yes, yes, YES!!!! LOVE Goran Visnjic! Dead sexy!

  25. bb says:
