Elizabeth Olsen covers Nylon: bad styling and/or too much Photoshop?

eolsennylon1

Elizabeth “Lizzie” Olsen, little sister to Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen), covers the October issue of Nylon. While the cover itself isn’t terrible (by Nylon standards), I’m feeling entirely underwhelmed by the photoshoot within, which is a shame because the magazine did a pretty good job last month with Christina Ricci’s shoot. Where Lizzie is concerned, however, the styling is pretty awful and favors animal print pants and cutoffs and leggings paired with boxy blazers.

Even more troubling than the styling is the fact that the photographs themselves are so heavily airbrushed that Olsen has been rendered virtually unrecognizable from both candid shots and film stills of Martha Marcy May Marlene, which is the movie being promoted here:

Olsen first read the script for Martha Marcy May Marlene when she was in upstate New York filming Peace, Love, and Misunderstanding with Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Catherine Keener (it premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September). “It was a really interesting feeling, where I felt like I knew how to approach this. This doesn’t happen too often with me.” In Martha, directed by 29-year-old Sean Durkin, a member of a Brooklyn-based trio of filmmakers called Borderline Films, Olsen plays Martha, a young girl who ends up in a cult, where she is drugged, raped, and held in a state of servitude with a number of other women who are shared between a group of men on a remote farm in the Catskills. When she escapes to a lake house rented for the summer by her sister Lucy (Sarah Paulson) and her over-worked architect husband Ted (Hugh Dancy), she is haunted by her time on the farm, unable to talk about the experiences, which are gradually revealed in increasingly horrific flashbacks. Olsen’s performance is a tour de force and after the film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January (where Durkin won the U.S. Directing Award), word of it spread around Park City with the same fervor that news of Carey Mulligan’s turn as Jenny Mellor in An Education did in 2009. Olsen is in almost every frame and inhabits the role with a quiet fragility that is as unsettling as it is mesmerizing. In its sheer emotional impact it’s a performance that is reminiscent of Jennifer Lawrence’s in last year’s Winter’s Bone and, like Lawrence, Olsen should receive an Oscar nomination, too.

Hmm. So Lizzie Olsen is being touted as the “next Jennifer Lawrence,” which seems rather premature at best and also a somewhat useless comparison, since Lawrence herself is still taking her own first steps in Hollywood. Still, it’s something of a compliment and testament to indie stars breaking into mainstream film, even though Lizzie may not be interested in becoming an A-lister. She tells GQ that she grew up watching her sisters endure paparazzi hell, which is a huge reason that she became interested in smaller films. Lizzie also discussed Martha Marcy May Marlene‘s “most unnerving scene,” which shows her completely nude as part of a sex ritual with several cult men; she says she had no problem doing the nudity: “The movie wouldn’t have been as disturbing without it. Taking away someone’s sexuality, making it something you don’t even own anymore–that’s the scariest thing.” The movie will receive a limited release by Fox Searchlight on October 21, but I’m betting that all of the buzz will result in a wider release if the box office cooperates.

I would never guess that she was related to the Olsen twins. She is very pretty. I saw a picture of Mary Kate and she has the same hair color as Lilo…she looks like a little old lady.

  2. ladybert62 says:

Too much photoshop; she is a pretty girl but her fashion sense is as crazy as her sisters.

  3. tealily says:

That nose job is out of control, no?

  4. cmc says:

What in the F did they do to her nose? Yes, she has a cute, small nose but it looks majorly weird in a few of these shots.

  5. Susan says:

Did she get a nose job or something? There’s something weird about her face. Can’t quite put my finger on it…

  6. Jackson says:

She kind of has no nose. Reminds me of Michelle Pfeiffer. I hope it’s just some weird photoshop or the lighting. Very strange.

  7. Kelly says:

What is it? Is it human? Yeah, that’s one peculiar nosejob. I don’t think it’s photoshop. I can’t imagine her nose was that big to begin with, so making it into a tiny snout seems unlikely.

Weren’t Mary Kate and Ashley rumored to have had nosejobs as well?

  8. It is ME!! says:

I agree with you ladies saying something is off about her nose. It’s almost like the nostrils are too narrow.

    Otherwise, she’s cute!

  9. Micah says:

She’s very pretty, but the photoshop bozos have gone over the top and made her look like an animee character.

  10. gee says:

She’s so gorgeous. I can’t get over how pretty she is. She’s like the hugs not drugs version of her sisters.

  11. podzol says:

Elizabeth Olsen has a really classically beautiful face. I’m reminded of Grace Kelly in Rear Window… that is, if Grace Kelly dressed from Urban Outfitters or something.

  12. Ari says:

The overly done eye kills any resemblance in most of the pictures.

  13. WillyNilly says:

Are you kidding about the cutoffs, leggings, and jackets? Have you walked into a Forever 21 lately? American Apparel? Ugly is apparently very “in”. Its closest comparison is a 1987 Best Western duvet cover in Arizona. Soooo gross. *shudder*

  14. KLO says:

She looks fifty. How the hell is this possible? Must be the photoshop.

  15. Rhiley says:

She looks really cute in the last picture. She is a beatiful young woman. She’s just a victim of bad styling and maybe not being very comfortable posing for pictures. But for an Olsen, is totally gorg. I love @ gee’s post.

  16. Blergh says:

That face! She’s effing stunning! Love.

  17. Kathy says:

@tealily: Hells yes. She has the Jenny Garth/Jessica Biel nose going. Very pretty women all, but their noses are so unnaturally small that it’s sometimes distracting.

And I agree with @Kelly, unfortunately I think that is the way it really looks.

  18. Rachel says:

Okay, so I finally figured out what bugs me about her nose — the nostrils go IN where they should go out. They’re too narrow and should flare out after the bulb on her nose, but they go in, instead. It’s very distracting and looks wrong, at least to me. She’s much more attractive in the picture where she’s smiling, because it draws her nostrils out and makes them look wider and more in-balance with the tip of her nose.

Whew. I just spent way too much time analyzing a stranger’s funky nose.

  19. Isa says:

I see so much MK and Ashley in her, except it’s like one of them went and go some plastic surgery. The mouth is slightly different. And the nose. The nose is soooo small. Too small for her face. Did she start off with a nose the size of MK and Ashley and wittle it down?

  20. BW says:

She looks 40 years old in those photos.

  21. SEF says:

That cover looks like Meredith Viera.

  22. original kate says:

she looks like the love child of a flounder and a slestack.

  23. sasquatch says:

she kinda looks like she’s a mix of Sissy Spacek, Maggie Gyllenhaal with a whiff of her famous sisters

  24. Semper says:

She obviously had a nose job and went way overboard with it. Such a shame.

  25. WOM says:

    Major, MAJOR nostril trauma.

  26. Jane says:

I don´t care for the try-hard styling, but Elisabeth is never not adorable.

  27. Mitch Buchanan Rocks says:

She got the same nose as Angelina!

  28. cbreader says:

Everytime I hear about her I think of her hollywood debut:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zlWD4KHD91M

Haha she was adorable! Who’d have thought after all the years of the twins being so famous and her being completely out of the spotlight that she’d end up being the serious actress of the family! She’s gotten amazing reviews for her acting and from the trailer I can see why. Amazing that all 3 Olsen girls are so successful! Their parents must be proud.

  29. Sara says:

She looks too old in these.

  30. ICKCher says:

It’s pretty common knowledge (on the gossip circuit) that the Olsen twins had rhinoplasty. It looks as though their younger sister has undergone some sort of similar procedure. . . . I think there were photos of her a couple of years ago on a gossip blog (Just Jared??) and her nose was noticeably larger. It is a shame, but I think that her original nose was better suited to her face (more in proportion to the rest of her facial features).

*sidenote: I think that the small article that mentioned her, before all of this media hype over her debut as an actress, concerned some gossip about her starring in a music video. . . does anyone remember this?

  31. Cerulean says:

I can’t stand that tiny nose syndrome. It leaves too much space on either side of the nose. It’s so so wrong to the eye.

Jake G has that too. It makes their mouths look overly wide.

  32. Ruby Red Lips says:

She’s a beautiful girl, but the photoshopping has made her look like a 40 year old plastic surgery victim…not good

  33. blinditemreader says:

I’m glad I’m not the only one wondering where her nose went. Too bad. She def looks more balanced when she smiles.

  34. Angel says:

oh. well. that is … that is really something.

  35. Bodhi says:

She looks just like her sisters… The movie sounds really interesting & I might have to look in to it.

  36. JaneWonderfalls says:

I will say that I love her hair! But other than that she looks like LeToya Jackson, to me.

  37. Bec says:

Why does she look 40? In every picture I’ve ever seen of her – her face looks so old. Maybe it’s that she’s too thin? Maybe anorexic?
    I haven’t seen a nose job that bad since the 80’s. I don’t think she’s beautiful. Quite frankly, I think she’s annoying.
Who could ever remember the title of that film? That’s a terrible title.

  38. Steph says:

She always looks like she’s in pain but she’s trying to look sexy or cute. I can’t look at her face without thinking she just lost the World Series or her dog got ran over. Or maybe its an “I’m scared” look. Whatever it is, its too contrived. I shouldn’t complain though. At least its not “prune” like her sisters.

  39. Phil says:

I wish women would stop getting the sides of their nose reduced. It looks so unnatural. It is normal for a persons nose to stick out a little bit on the sides.
