Christina Ricci: “I once ate McDonalds three times in one day”

We called it when guessing that “Pan Am” was probably like “Mad Men” but with stewardesses, since the show was promoted as a depiction of the social and sexual mores of the 1960s. Sunday night’s premiere was relatively well received by critics and audiences alike, but I personally found the show a bit hollow in terms of the human element. Indeed, the International Business Times agrees that “It’s bubblegum. It’s a glossy, well researched, and fairly well-executed piece of nostalgic candy” but that “an emotional core is needed if the show hopes to have any staying power.” The NY Times also (accurately) declares the show inferior to “Mad Men” but also distinguishes “Pan Am” as “tak[ing] a more forgiving look at the 1960s” and stops just short of describing the pilot episode as “Sex and the Cockpit.”

Still, it’s a rare pleasure to see Christina Ricci on television, and here are some candid shots of her while shooting “Pan Am” on location in New York City in August. Ricci’s character, Maggie, stands out from the other three primary stewardess characters in that she refuses to wear a girdle and often gets in trouble for her so-called “rebellious” nature. It’s a fitting role for Ricci, and she’s still doing the press rounds to promote the show, including this interview with the Huffington Post:

On The Glamour of “Pan Am”: It certainly does look glamorous and fun and beautiful, but it also reminds me about the clothes and having to have my makeup done like that every day. My mother told me it took her two hours every day to get ready during those times. It reminds me that getting dressed today — the way we get dressed — is also a luxury.

On Sexism In The 1960s: Yeah, there is that as well. You can’t show this period of time without acknowledging that it was a misogynistic period of time for women. There were certainly not just double standards but blatant rules that excluded women and were very hurtful to women.

I think they were having a good time. One thing I have to say about stewardesses — they were very much in charge of their own lives and sexuality. It was a job where they could sleep with who they wanted to and travel around and not be married. Actually, they couldn’t have the job if they were married. While certainly flirting with passengers was encouraged, sleeping with passengers was not encouraged and that is something we deal with in the show.

On Her “Pan Am” Character: I flout authority. My character, Maggie, uses the plane as her own personal runway. When she’s out and about, she’s the glamour queen and gets into fights and fights for everyone else’s rights. She has her nose in everything.

On Watching Her Old Movies: I look at it and think it’s funny because I look like such a kid. I think when you know yourself, you can recognize your little kid acting voice or the way I read a line. I’m more like, “Oh, look I was 12,” or, “Look what I looked like when I was 10.”

On Her Food Temptations: I have to say my favorite forbidden food is Cheetos and any kind of McDonalds. I once ate McDonalds three times in one day.

[From HuffPo]

We’ve already discussed how Ricci has some lingering body image issues from her teens and young adulthood that are evidenced by her recent statement that she doesn’t look as good as the “average person” in a bikini. She usually comes across as quite honest and frank in interviews, so I’m wondering what to make of this admission that she often eats McDonalds. Is it possible to do so and still maintain such a lithe figure without delving into eating disorder territory? Whatever the case, Christina must be doing something right, for she is positively glowing in these set photos.

She says she ONCE ate McDonalds three times in one day. Like, one time. Judging from these pics, that must have been an awfully long time ago, too. She’s so tiny her head and feet look enormous, like a little girl that put on her mom’s pumps.

Apparently, you can have some things in moderation. Maybe she has lettuce all day every day and a cheese burger once a month. Although my size 12 ass is not totally well versed in moderation, maybe I didn’t get that exactly right.

god that should be tasty but it’s so unhealthy for your body! i watched super-size me and my opinion of fast food got even worse.

  7. smh says:

btw i believe her body issues stem from the fact that her head was has a bigger and rounder structure, so she sees it in the mirror and she thinks she is fat, when she isn’t fat at all. or at least she thought that way in her teens. you know no teenage girl wants a round-face, they want to grow up fast and look as skinny as possible, because of all the baby fat. but as you grow older it’s wiser to keep a bit of fat esp. because the face will look much older if it looks covered with wrapping paper.

  8. I hope the show is a success. Ricci seems to be one of the few child actors who gets better with age.

One day she had 3 small fries. Not 3 orders..3. Small. Fries.

I’m happy she isn’t with that huge ginormous guy. It looked…impossible.

I like her show. The styling is flawless.

    Lentil –

I agree! That second picture – WOW. Her skin looks Barbie-ish though, but I would kill for good skin like that.

As for Christina – I love sausage mcmuffins, I could probably eat three in a day. I COULD, but I might feel sick afterwards.

Love her. I didn’t get the sense that she eats it often, either. “Forbidden” to me rings of a once in a while treat. I think the 3x in one day was a binge day or something.

Either way, love her. And I love the styling on the show as well. Gorgeous.

I am truly baffled sometimes. I love Christina, too (well, I love her older work pre Black Snake Moan) but serious, why are we not calling her out on her super, super tiny waist. She is smaller than “Waity Katey” and looks to be smaller than Leanne Rhimes, but she is “glowing”? I just think if you are going to point it out for some you should point it out for all.

I’m not claiming she has an eating disorder, she could eat really healthy, or exercise a lot, I don’t personally know her, so i don’t have a clue – but she looks alarmingly small in these pictures.

  14. Hmmm says:

Love the styling but IRL, she wouldn’t have qualified to work as a stew…too short. They had height requirements…

  15. The Original Ashley says:

padiddle – the difference between Waity and Christina is that her waist looks a bit more natural since she’s like 5’2 and she’s supposed to be tiny (if she gained even a few pounds she’d turn into Snooki before the diet pills).

Waity is 5’10 and looks unnatural.

As for McDonald’s, you can eat whatever you want as long as you exercise. And if you have the right genetics you can get away with it even if you don’t exercise (I ate fast food for years and never gained weight despite being a lazy arse and never exercising). She could possibly eat all the McDonald’s she likes without being bulimic. We don’t know what her regimen is or if she comes from skinny stock.

  16. padiddle says:

Original Ashley – I am also 5’2″, and I think it’s a bit of misconception that if we gain a little bit of weight we balloon up Snooki size. If I gain 5 lbs it is maybe a little bit noticeable, but I don’t turn into a round ball.

And although Christina looks a little more natural because she is short, that waist still looks way too small to be natural (to me, anyway) and I think her waist looks smaller than Kate. Again, my opinion, people can certainly disagree. I think we are all very subjective, and don’t want to call her out because we “like” her as opposed to people like Leanne who we don’t like. I just think all of them deserve it equally. To me, Christina looks like her waist is unnatural. Especially because she was a little bit bigger in previous years and looked less lollipop headed.

It is possible to eat fast food and not gain weight. I did for yrs, like another poster said. I try not to eat much of it now that Im older for health reason but I still do once in awhile. As long as you exercise and dont eat more than your body is burning, you’ll be fine.

She still looks like a bobble head. I have no idea who that blonde is next to her but she looks fabulous. Ricci won’t be the star of the show long if she is in a lot of scenes.

I’am also a shorty at 5’0″. People are always telling me I need to gain weight. I think Christina looks pretty healhty in these pics. Not all short people look like Snooki lol. No offense to Snooki…

  23. Amanda says:

There’s something about this show that doesn’t liike quite accurate to the 1960′s. When I watch Mad Men, everything look so authentic. Every person, every prop, every setting looks like it was ripped straight from the 1960′s and put on my TV. It is SO authentic. For some reason, with Pan Am, I get stuck on the fact that none of the characters look like they are in the ’60′s (despite the clothing and hair-dos). They look like actresses from 2011 dressing up like they are from the ’60′s. The guys, especially, look completely inaccurate. I don’t know what it is, but I’m curious.

Since when does eating McDonalds qualify as having an eating disorder? Moderation and activity, you can eat what you want. I eat junk food all the time and am thin, but I am active and I do not have an eating disorder.

  26. Mika says:

I watched the first episode of PanAm and was not impressed. While it’s miles ahead of Playboy Club, it’s still not a very good show. It’s shallow and none of the characters are believable. This would be fine, however, if the show didn’t think it was Mad Men, which, quality-wise, is just embarrassing.

She’s tiny, but she still has arms, so I give her a pass. She is just petite and small chested as well.

I try to never eat fast food, it’s gross. Except for In-n-Out. That’s not fast food, it’s a great burger fast. All fresh and made right there…I can tell I’m moving back to Cali in 2 weeks when the cravings hit. Here I come!

There is no way Christina Ricci could have been a flight stewardess in the 60s.

They had a height minimum and there is no way she would have hit it. My mother watched the show and she kept complaining about it – she’s a little bitter that she got turned down for being too short back in the day.

I think she has looked like a bobble head for years. She has issues with food and weight. She can’t pretend they aren’t still in existent. Her comments the last few interviews make it apparent that she still has some sort of morphed body image issues.

I do like her. I think she’s cute but she does look like a bobble head playing dress up.

  39. Ashley says:

It is entirely possible to consume fast food and not gain weight. It is even possible to lose weight doing so, if one approaches it intelligently. Fat Head is a rather amusing and factual documentary regarding that topic (and a counterpoint for Super Size Me).

I must say, I have always loved the tailoring, styling, and overall aesthetic of the 60′s posh young woman. To me, clothes from that era seem more flattering, and women tended to have a higher standard for casual wear (which I appreciate).

Considering I like the visuals of that time, it’s odd that I’ve never watched Mad Men, and I doubt I’ll get around to watching this one either. No idea why.

Wow, she is TINY! And I don’t mean thin (although she is), I mean just a very short and petite person. She makes the blonde lady in the second pic look like an Amazon, and I’m sure she’s not.

Also, I covet her dress. That style is so great for making your waist look tiny no matter how big your lower half is. (Speaking from pear-shaped experience here.) :)
