Actor James Marsden’s wife, Lisa Linde, files for divorce

Remember James Marsden? He’s a fairly handsome guy and former “It Boy” of Hollywood, who seemed to rise up from mediocre television to craptastic movies like the second and third X-Men movies and a recent Katherine Heigl romcom, 27 Dresses, to graduate to further curtain munching in Enchanted and Hairspray. Then all of a sudden, he was relegated to B-movies and found himself playing second fiddle to Russell Brand’s bunny in Hop. All of this is to minimize the sad fact that he was not immune to the fate found within a disproportionally large percentage of marriages, and James’ wife has now filed divorce papers:

“X-Men” star James Marsden’s wife has filed for divorce, TMZ has learned.

Lisa Linde cited irreconcilable differences. She’s seeking spousal support and joint legal and physical custody.

A rep for James tells TMZ, “This was a mutual decision. They are committed to raising their kids together and remain great friends.”

The couple married in 2000 and have two children — a son and a daughter.

Lisa filed for divorce on September 23rd. So this is interesting … TMZ got video of James at 4:30 AM that morning, outside the Papaya King hot dog shop in New York, singing with a bunch of friends.

[From TMZ]

The video referenced by TMZ is truly bizarre, but I guess that James was probably drunk and only happened to be filmed because he’s famous. Most people have done strange things in public while drowning their sorrows over the dissolution of a marriage and are just lucky enough to go unnoticed.

I really do wish that publicists would stop issuing the line about how amicable Hollywood divorces supposedly are because — let’s face it — absolutely no one believes that nonsense. Movie stars are just as messed up as the rest of us but just happen to be slightly prettier in most cases. However, I have to wonder why the court can’t just legislate a new ground for divorce — “He starred in Hop” — from the bench. After all, judicial activism does have its place in certain instances. God, I am such a jerk.

I’m calling it – January Jones’ baby daddy!

  2. gee says:

He’s so hansome and seems so sweet. And she looks like a mix between Nikki Reid and Idina Menzel.

  3. Ari says:

God, I miss being drunk off my a$$ at like 3am and having one of those hot dogs…(and fries and a banana shake)

    SIGH FLORIDA

  4. The.princess.leia says:

Ugh I was thinking he was in the latest X-Men. Dang it. Back to the drawing board on the January Jones blind.

  5. mia girl says:

No matter what movie he is in, A, B or C he is always among the most charming things about that movie. He makes things watchable. I watch 27 Dresses because of him.

I don’t know why he hasn’t been able to make that jump to A list – but maybe it’s because he’s never been the lead in a successful action movie.

  6. Hautie says:

I really like this guy. He has done a lot of movies that I like. The one that stands out to me is “Sex Drive”.

He was the older brother in the movie to the lead. But I cracked up every time Marsden was on the screen.

Ohhh and “Death at a Funeral”. Just fabulous.

  7. Ashley says:

He’s also co-starring in Straw Dogs with Bos and Skaarsgard. He’s so hot.

  8. AcornPaste says:

I didn’t even know he was married! Time to head to the queue now

  9. Lauren says:

JM was also in The NoteBook. He is a great character actor. His wife looks waxy.

  10. LOVE ANGELINA says:

LMAO Loved that last sentence. I love James Marsden, loved him in Hairspray and 27 Dresses is like my favorite rom com ever he is a big part of why it is. It was sooooo good. It really was. Hautie your absolutely right about Death at Funeral, James was soo funny in it. Poor guy. Getting divorced sucks.

  11. Roma says:

Ahh crap didn’t realize he wasn’t in the recent one (though watched it last weekend).

  12. Heatheradair says:

I’m totally “meh” on this guy. He was in a horrible movie with Mena Suvari and that “Heather Graham Knockoff” from a few years back — Marley something? Where a bunch of high school cheerleaders started robbing banks? He played the baby-daddy of the head cheerleader or something. Anyway — it was a WRETCHED movie, and I sort of permanently associated him with wretchedness after that.

And then he deigned to star in something with Dame Heigl and after that…..meh, meh, meh, meh.

That said: divorce blows. even for actors. so, bummer — and bummer for their kiddos.

  13. brin says:

He’s been in lots of movies and seems to be having a good career (I’m sure there are plenty of unemployed actors who would love to be where he is).
Divorce is always sad, wish them well.

  14. jc126 says:

Oh, crap, he’s not in the latest X Men? I, too, was thinking he’s GOT to be the dad of J. Jones’ baby.

  15. Karen says:

Back in the day when I followed Days of Our Lives and read the soap mags, Lisa Linde (who was on DOOL for a spell) was always going on about her boyfriend “Jimmy”. In every interview, she would drop his name a dozen times. From what I can recall, they had been together for years and she was very proud at the gains he was making in his career. I said to myself, “This one isn’t gonna let him get away”.

Every time I would hear of a new movie, I would pay attention to see if he was still married because I figured she was way more into it than he was and he would eventually dump her for someone more popular. Imagine my surprise to learn it was she who filed for divorce. I take no glee in the news because she always seemed to in love and they have 2 young children. Sad news for sure so I’m hoping that he didn’t break her heart as I predicted he would so many years earlier.

  16. bigchili says:

I agree with the person that said he makes movies better. He’s just so adorable & cute. Divorce does blow so this makes me sad for them & their kids.

  17. Esmom says:

I’ve always found him cute, since Ally McBeal, but I didn’t picture him married with kids. Sad.

The fact that he’s a dad probably explains why he did Hop, don’t you think? It seems like most actors with kids like to make a kiddie film for them at some point.

  18. Kathy says:

The Box was very good. And for once, he wasn’t the guy getting dropped by the woman he loves.

  19. Jezi says:

Aaawww this is sad. I love him to. I think he’s a hottie. Loved him in the Notebook. Damn, I wish marriages would last more.

  20. tapioca says:

@Heatheradair: You mean Sugar & Spice with Marley Shelton? Except that movie was AWESOME in it’s own craptastic way.

And he was the best thing in Enchanted too! I expect he married young and now he’s better known wants to dip his wick in as many dumb starlets as he can whilst his looks last – the same old, same old…

  21. Jennifer says:

I knew his best friend-back in 2003 he was notorious in his circle for cheating on his wife. This was before the Xmen movies, I believe. She has probably finally gotten sick of it.

    • Amy Lynn Hunt says:

So, Jennifer, what is Jimmy’s friend’s name? (“I knew his best friend-back in 2003 he was notorious in his circle for cheating on his wife”) Let me know, i’ll walk over & ask Jimmy’s Mom. Then we can settle this load of bull $h*t once and for all.

All Jimmy is “notorious” for is being a decent human who has managed to stay grounded and decent in a town of people who think a wedding is more important than a marriage.

  22. Violet says:

I still think Claudia Schiffer’s husband is January Jones’ baby daddy but it looks like James is also a contender.

I can’t believe these guys jeopardizing their marriages and hurting their families just to get a bit of tail. For shame.

  23. So not! says:

I always mistake this dude for james franco…that can’t b good

  24. kee says:

Does anyone else wonder if Kate Bosworth was involved in this?

  25. Gwen says:

@kee: Ha, that was my first thought too.

I knew he was married and it’s a shame for the kids that their parents are splitting up. Almost always is.

  26. lucy2 says:

That’s a shame! I just saw him on some talk show and he seemed like a pretty cool guy who loves his family. But I guess you never know what goes on. Hope things are as easy as possible for their kids.
I like him as an actor too, especially in Enchanted.

  27. dahlia1947 says:

Wonder what’s behind the divorce? He was soooo hot in The Notebook. Haven’t seen him in anything else. I’ll take him as a 1940’s soldier boy any day!!

  28. Relli says:

@ Tapioca….. RIGHT!!! i freaking love that movie its probably the only teen movie from that era that i still watch and howl with laughter 10+ years later.

  29. sash says:

Factual: He is a cheater. I know. I DIDN’T know he was married.

    • Amy Lynn Hunt says:

Bring me one iota of fact. One irrefutable piece of evidence. This is not a cheater just because you think he is. She left him, who knows if she thinks she’s found someone better?

  30. MaiGirl says:

ITA that he was good in the American version of Death At A Funeral. He was just about the ONLY thing good about it. When he began singing the gospel song, I literally fell out of my chair.

I’m sorry they are getting a divorce, and I admit I also thought about JJ and the baby. I really hope he isn’t that tacky, but he might be.

  31. Michael says:

The 2nd X-Men movie is actually an excellent movie. Maybe the best comic book movie ever.

  32. Madison says:

Yeah no one believes the irreconcilable differences garbage, but legally that’s the easiest one to go for. She should have filed my husband is a cheating scumbag and I finally got sick of it.

  33. Abby says:

Aw. I love him. He’s adorable. Sweet guy from the Notebook!

  34. ZenB!tch says:

@madison – unfortunately the options seem to be “irreconcilable differences” or some other generic thing.

The drunk video and some of my friends’ reports make me wonder if the irreconcilable difference isn’t booze rather than women.

  35. Oops says:

Kate Bosworth’s name has actually been mentioned. There are photos of them filming Straw Dogs where she was all over him (and not filming scenes). She was more than chummy at the Straw Dogs premiere a few weeks ago.

  36. Mrs. Odie 2 says:

I had no idea they were still together. I remember when he was “Jimmy” and I knew him through mutual friends. He started dating her back in the 90s I think.

  37. HakiSaki says:

OMFG! She did what? She left Cyclops! I don’t mind taking him home with me :))

  38. clare says:

What is so bizarre about this? the guy has a great voice, was having fun, and is a performer for god’s sake.

  39. Moi says:

He is so beautiful, but I’m sad to hear that he’s a cheater.

    • Amy Lynn Hunt says:

He’s NOT a cheater! Did you not get the memo about things on the internet and their veracity? How would you like people saying these things about you? Or your friend or family?

  40. MsCatra says:

Does anyone remember when he was the original Griffin on Party of Five? I think he only did one episode before Jeremy London took over the role. I was pissed at the change!

  41. ToastedSkin says:

like someone already said, whatever movie he’s in, he’s always the best part. Very handsome guy, seems really nice.

  42. I’ve been surfing online more than 3 hours today, yet I never found any attention-grabbing article like yours. It is beautiful worth enough for me. Personally, if all web owners and bloggers made good content material as you did, the net will probably be a lot more useful than ever before.

  43. A Neighbor says:

I am fully disgusted at everyone who would say he cheated on his wife! Here is a little Actual Truth for you people, and maybe at least one of you will read this and spread some truth.

Jimmy’s DAD was a cheater and he left the family when Jimmy was pretty young. It was awful. He would not do that to his kids. I get that the name of this site is celebitchy, but you are talking about actual human beings here… and it is just NOT acceptable to lie like that. These are very decent people and this is all just really sad. If any of you have kids, you’re really sick. He’s famous – that’s the only thing different here. (And he’s a very talented actor, as well as singer) These are people, these are good, nice people and i for one am sick about this family breaking up.
