Kelly Rowland on her implants: “Not for a man, not for work, for myself!”

cosmo1

Kelly Rowland had her boobs done in 2007, and she’s very proud of them. No word on whether she’s proud of jacking Naomi Campbell’s bangsy wig and wearing it on the cover of Cosmo UK’s November issue. Can I just say? Fake boobs and wiglets aside, I’ve always liked the forgotten members of Destiny’s Child. Not the ones who were jettisoned in a hot second after they joined (who remembers them?), but Michelle Williams and Kelly Rowland. I think both of those girls deserve awards for putting up with Beyonce for years, and for being tossed aside once Bey established herself as a solo artist. Anyway, I didn’t really know anything about Kelly’s current life before I read this interview – she sounds pretty cool. Here are some highlights:

On the boob job in October 2007. “I said in an interview a long time ago that I’d get it done because I just had little nuggets for boobs and it was bothering me. The decision was 10 years in the making, so I’m comfortable talking about it… It’s something I really wanted to do for myself — not for a man, not for work, for myself. And I love them!”

On being abandoned by her father, Christopher Lovett, when she was just a kid: “I haven’t seen my dad for almost 20 years. It’s nothing I want a pity party for. He left me and my mom, and I was angry… I wanted to be a daddy’s girl so bad. God damn The Cosby Show because that made me think, ‘Why isn’t my family like that?’ But this is not a perfect world.”

Reconnecting: Lovett tried to contact his estranged daughter through a tabloid in June, and Rowland plans to slowly let him back into her life. “He reached out to me saying he wanted to see me, but it’s unfortunate he did it so publicly. I want to meet him, and soon, I really do. I forgave him a long time ago.”

Breaking off her engagement to athlete Roy Williams in 2005 when she was 24: “I was too young for marriage. I remember my sister B [Beyonce] asked me one question: she said, ‘Well, you know what you want now, don’t you?’ and I was like ‘Yes’. It was so hard and embarrassing because everyone knew. I’d posed for the front cover of a magazine in my wedding dress and it was on sale! But sometimes you fall down and you learn from it”.

On being single: “Before, I’d want to lean on somebody. Now I love the fact that I can just be a single lady, chilling and hanging with my friends, and traveling the world. It’s a pretty good life. I’m ready for marriage when the right time comes now, though.”

Re: the boob job… they’re a nice size. I admire her realistic view of her body, and what size implants would like “right” on her slender frame. She’s probably, what? A B/C cup, maybe?

Kelly has fashioned a decent career for herself as judge of the UK’s X-Factor. I’ve never seen it, obviously, so I have no idea if she’s any good. Is she a nice judge, or is she harsh?

She has also appeared on some UK comedy panel shows over the years. She’s cute on Nevermind The Buzzcocks. I prefer her to Beyonce, that’s for sure.

  2. Bite me says:

I like kelendria… Best of luck to her on mending her relationship with her father

  3. Dee says:

I LOVE Kelly! Always have, always will. She was my favourite member of Destiny’s Child.
She’s great on the X Factor, a great personality, bold fashion choices (you should check out her Versace from last Saturday)are making her a fan favourite already.

  4. Catherine says:

Hmmm…if it wasn’t because our society has deemed less-than-busty women less attractive, why would one feel the need to get implants? So, I don’t know. Whenever I hear the “I had plastic surgery for ME!” response, it always sounds false.

  5. Maritza says:

She is looking prettier than Beyonce. I hate the blonde hair look in Beyonce.

  6. Jayna says:

She ‘s talented. There was a period back shet got so thin she looked awful, like she would break. But eventually she put a few pounds back on.

  7. Jackie says:

got boob job for myself….please. give me a break. it is always done for the male visual. have always thought she got a raw deal, though. always pushed aside for b. ugh.

  8. Blue says:

She is my favorite from Destiny’s child. I think she’s making a pretty decent solo career for herself.

  9. Blue says:

So any woman who gets breast implants after thinking about it for years is doing it to make men she doesn’t know happy? Not because SHE isn’t happy with the way she looks. Okay got it.

  10. LOVE ANGELINA says:

Yea Kelly’s career is pretty good. Kelly had a very successful single out that I couldn’t stand but OMG my brother loved my neighbor loved it was annoying. It was called Motivation. She looks amazing.

  11. Catherine says:

@ Blue – what would be the origin of such dissatisfaction if not due to societal pressure which deems only certain physical attributes are attractive?

  12. Blue says:

So,it was societal pressures but it’s not like she just rushed out got the boobs first chance she got. She was in her late 20’s and obviously gave it some thought. She ultimately decided that she wanted boobs to make herself happy, because she didn’t like how she looked. Since society ingrained that in her mind, it probably was subconscious thoughts of not being adequate or looking like a boy or not being a “real” woman as they but she made the conscious decision. So i still think of it of her doing it for herself, not because her boyfriend or record label told her to. That’s the difference I see.

  13. sasa says:

I do think that a certain amount of the general view on what’s pretty is internalized for most of us. So we automatically see a huge honker of a nose on a woman or tubular breasts or ears that really stick out as ugly.

I don’t blame anyone who decides to correct such imperfections.

But I just don’t see what is it about nice small boobs that could produce similar insecurities. It’s not like it’s a rare thing to have small breasts.

So “I did it for myself” argument regarding implants says that she is fact a very insecure person. Which is fine by itself but the wording could be misleading to young girls reading this. There are better ways to say it.

  14. petalfrog says:

A friend of mine got her boobs done. She had a small A cup and sexy big butt and thighs. She felt her body was “off” and got a PERFECT surgery to a large B/small C. She never wears clothes that show off her new boobs and in fact, tends towards more loose, gauzy clothing. She truly got the boobs to make her boy feel more proportional for herself. They look (and feel) real. They are not clownish. You would not know she got them done if you did not know her, as her style has never been about her boobs. I believe, given that Kelly’s boobs are a good size for her body, that she did this for herself. It is entirely possible.

  15. sasa says:

    @petalfrog
Granted, if the body is heavily disproportional I think implants can be done “for oneself”.

I’m just not seeing it in Kelly. Her body already looked super hot before surgery. She has a bigger butt but not unproportionally so. It was in fact even sexier before IMO because the emphasis was on her other attributes (butt, legs…) which nicely hold their own ground.
Now she’s just very, very proportional. Looks nice but is a bit boring for me.

  16. penguin says:

She is beautiful and doing great job on uk x factor. Its every1s right and personal choice if they decide to get plastic surgery. Imo she looks better for it.

  17. KLO says:

She looks perfect. i hope she never gets anything else done.

  18. MellaYellow says:

I love her! She keeps it real. She isn’t the only celeb with a boob job but the only one that will admit to it. Kim Kardashian has had the works including her butt, breast face hair everything is fake on her but she lies about it. Not attractive to lie

  19. sd says:

I have wanted a breast enlargement since I was 18 years old. I even entered a contest that was giving one away for free, that is how desperate I was. I didn’t/don’t want it for anyone other than ME. I do not feel like woman at all. I have NO boobs, none, just nipples. I have the chest of an 8 year-old girl. There was a time when I even thought I might be a hermaphrodite b/c I have NOTHING. It is very hard not feeling womanly. On the shallow side, I never look good in clothes, ever. Have huge hips and no boobs, look terrible.
Unless you’re me/also have no boobs, you just can’t understand.
I have never been able to get an enlargement b/c can’t afford it, but if I could, I would do it in a second.

  20. sasa says:

    @sd

I’m truly sorry you feel so bad.

I think there is a world of difference between small boobs and no boobs at all.
(I’ve seen photos of Kelly in bikini pre-surgery and she had breasts, just rather small)
I hope you either find a way to embrace it or find the money for surgery, whatever comes first.

  21. ES says:

Forgive me, but I truly can’t stand when people throw out, ‘getting implants is a form of insecurity’…Yes, dear, we all know that. People who have gotten them, myself included, never denied feeling insecure about it. Not one person has ever said anything negative about my breasts pre-surgery and in fact my husband tried to talk me out of it. I simply like breasts that match my butt.

So, yes, it can be done for yourself.

  22. Ben says:

She’s kind of doing fine career-wise. Her pop stuff is successful in the UK and European markets (which is not to be sniffed at, a lot of US acts are US-only) and her last RnB single did really well, as well or better than Beyoncé’s last few.

  23. sd says:

    @sasa
Thank you so much for taking the time to post your kind words, I really appreciate it.
And yes, you’re right. There IS a big difference between having small boobs and no boobs. Even my friends feel bad for me.
I support my mom and other family members financially so it will probably never happen, but goodness knows that *I* know there are much more important things to worry about. It really does crush my self-esteem and toy with my identity though.
    Thanks so much again 🙂

  24. the original bellaluna says:

She didn’t go ridiculously large *sideeye @ Heidi* and she didn’t do it because “someone” told/wanted her to; she did it because she wanted to.

If I could afford to have these girls reduced, I would. Not for anyone but me.

  25. sasa says:

    @sd
    Hugs.

    @ES
It makes a difference whether you’re in the public eye or not. I can imagine girls loaded with insecurities (too thin, too fat, whatever…) reading Kelly’s statement and thinking: if SHE, who was already fit and attractive, had to do it for her self esteem what must I do to fit the norm?!

I would prefer that she stated how she felt insecure because the way she formed it sounds more empowering then anything else: “I did it for myself- yaaay for me!”

  26. Cali says:

She is so pretty and I’m very happy to look at anyone other than Beyonce!

  27. Kim says:

She looks great. We ALL have insecurities. Its how we deal with them that shows our character & she is being honest about hers which i respect.

  28. Violet says:

If it’s not for a man or for work, women get cosmetic surgery because they’re insecure. I have to admit that if I had a manly face like Kelly’s, I’d be tempted to do anything I could to look less like a tranny.

That said, whenever I think of implants these days, I think of Sharon Osbourne recently waking up to find one of her breasts leaking silicone into the wall of her stomach. Yuck.

  29. Sabine says:

I think she and Idris Elba would make a sexy couple. I like that Kelly doesn’t seem as high maintenance as Beyonce; that always bothered me about Destiny’s Child. Kelly just seems relaxed and into doing what she loves, as opposed to an “image” to uphold.

  30. LeeLoo says:

I just appreciate the fact Kelly isn’t lying about having work done. It’s nice to hear of a celebrity be honest for once.

  31. Becky says:

I’m not a fan of breast implants, but I like that she’s honest. I have small boobs (large A/small B) and while I wish they were a little bit bigger (I’d love to be a full B) overall I like them.

On the other hand, if I had a mastectomy or was completely flat chested I would definitely consider them. I agree with @sd and @sasa-there’s a difference between having small boobs and no boobs. @sd I hope that you are able to either come to some acceptance or are able to afford implants. If it’s any consolation, we all have things about our body/appearance that we don’t like (i.e. I have stringy, fine hair and my skin isn’t the greatest-at 39 I already have crow’s feet and broken blood vessels-if I had more money I’d do something about them…it’s just not a priority right now).

  32. Isa says:

They look great! Good for her. She picked the perfect size. This is what I want. I have very small breasts, been waiting on them since I was 13 and never got them. My breasts don’t grow during pregnancy and I don’t produce much milk.
I feel defective. They don’t even serve the purpose they are there for! No matter how much weight I gain, they stay the same size. One day, I will get mine done. It’s something I’ve always wanted. My husband has tried to talk me out of it, but has accepted it’s something I really want. I can’t wait to look better in my clothes!
    I’m glad she’s honest!

  33. Violet says:

    @Isa

I’m usually a C cup — and a D or DD whenever I gain weight — and I hate always having to wear a bra. When I’m a D or DD, I even have to wear support when I’m sleeping or my breasts end up aching. Plus they aren’t as perky as they once were, which is not a problem my small-breasted friends have.

Another thing to consider is that — and LeAnn Rimes is a good example of this — you might also end up with stretch marks if you get implants.

If your husband loves your small breasts and your main concern is looking better in your clothes, just get a padded bra!

  34. LeenB says:

@sd, I completely understand. My aunt was the same way, she did not have any boobs, she couldn’t even wear bikinis because they are too big on her chest. She finally got implants a while ago and she is so much happier. She’s been wanting them for years and years but never had the money. It sometimes annoy me when people with boobs get something a long the lines of J implant but completely understand when others do it tastefully and it is something they want for themselves.

  35. X says:

Kelly Rolland is officially on my sh*t list. I was born in England, have loads of family there, visited every other year until I was 12. So, I’ve been watching Xfactor UK, and other British shows, for years.

Kelly’s bony a** is on the panel of judges now, and I cannot express my absolute disgust for her. My favorite female hopeful Jade Richards sang an Adele song. At first I cringed, and was like, why is this little girl trying to pull an Adele song. Try a different song that doesn’t require so much talent. But then she sang, and she killed it. It’s your favorite song, Cele, Someone like you… Kelly starts to cry during the performance. Really, she cries during the performance. Only to boot Richards off for no good reason the week after.

That’s pretty dramatic on Kelly’s part, and what’s the phrase we always use… fame-whorey… Anyway, I’m posting the Jade Richards link. Curious to see what you ladies think.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2dnp6N9jsLo

There are rumors that Jade was kicked off because she wasn’t Christian enough for Kelly…

Really curious to see what you ladies think. By the way, the grandma alone will make you smile. Have a good evening.

  36. Semper says:

She looks great and her breasts are proportional, not at all vulgar. She obviously gave it a lot of thought before getting surgery and she seems happy with her decision. Good for her.

  37. crab says:

I got mine done just for me! I had a natural C cup and then I started working out like crazy and one day I looked and I was down to a AA cup. I just wanted my C’s back!

  38. sd says:

    Thank you, @Becky
and thank you, @LeenB. I’m so happy for your aunt. 🙂

  39. atlantapug says:

I challenge anyone who judges a girl who gets nice, tasteful breast implants like Kelly Rowland to imagine cutting off your breasts and walking around flat chested all the time.

Breasts are inherently feminine, to not have them makes one feel someone not woman enough (in some people).
It’s not always for men. As humans, we do associate breasts with being female.

I think her breasts look great. And very real. Good for you Kelly!

  40. smh says:

i’ve seen a few breast implant operations on t.v. and it scarred my soul deeply lol. i hope and pray that i’ll never have or have reason to get any sort of operation ever

  41. Eve says:

Well, I have to say that’s a pretty good boob job. They’re a nice size (seem proportional to the rest of her body).

  42. Katie says:

    http://youtu.be/ECJegEdcja0

I love Kelly on X factor! Last year Danni was my favourite judge, but Kelly has definitely filled the gap. She’s really warm and funny, much better than I would have thought.

  43. Isa says:

Violet- I do wear a padded bra, but it’s obvious that I’m flat chested. I wear an A cup and the cups stick out because they’re not filled out. Low cut tops show a flat chest. I even bought a bra that’s supposed to make you two cup sizes bigger. BIG splurge for me. Turns out you’re supposed to have something to sit in the cups (they’re super padded at the bottom.) I look weird in a bathing suit.
I would love a job like Kelly’s. I’m not looking for atttention from males, I get plenty of unwanted from the crazies I attract. I want to FEEL feminine and pretty. I’m not saying that flat chested women aren’t, just that I don’t feel that way. After trying unsuccessfully to breastfeed two children I hate my breasts even more. They are tiny and won’t even nourish my babies! Now I want to cry. I shall blame it on the postpartum hormones!
