Kate Moss: “I don’t use a lip liner or a lip brush: I just shove it on.”

Over the weekend, Kate Moss and her ruggedly handsome husband, Jamie Hince, were spotted at Paul McCartney’s wedding to Nancy Shevell. Naturally, Kate looked gorgeous. Of course, it’s a poorly kept secret amongst my friends that I completely adore Kate Moss as a model, as a trendsetter, and as a bit of a mess who has pulled herself together in the last handful of years. She’s certainly not a classic beauty but has a unique look and has perservered in the fashion world despite the odds; somehow, she’s also emerged as a very shrewd businesswoman. Hell, I even stuck by Kate during her bizarre Pete Doherty-loving phase that lasted a few years, at least. So when Kaiser sent me the link to this story, I was so excited for the simple reason of being able to dig up some of Kate’s old Rimmel adverts (yes, I have collected a folder full of them), especially the ones where she modelled lipstick. You’ll see why in just a moment.

As a model and spokesperson, Kate’s been with Rimmel for over a decade, and she’s soon preparing to launch her own lipstick line with the company. So she’s dished out some of her makeup secrets, which are — um — quite like my own; that is, Kate confesses to shunning lip liner during her offtime and choosing instead to just “shove it on” in regard to lipstick. Yes, she’s freely admitting to such an atrocious practice!

Kate Moss can “feel” when she needs to apply more blusher.

The British supermodel has just created a range of lipsticks in collaboration with Rimmel London. To mark their release she’s opened up about her beauty secrets.

The star has worn flicked eyeliner for so long she doesn’t need a mirror to apply it. She recommends using a kohl pencil rather than a liquid liner as they are easier, especially if there are any mistakes. Kate also doesn’t need to look at herself to know when she needs some extra colour on her face.

“I can feel when I need it. I use a powder and then a cream blush over the top to get a bit of a glow,” she told Style magazine.

When it comes to lipstick she applies and blots three times. She doesn’t bother using a liner or a brush either.

“Make-up artists do that, but I wouldn’t do it on myself. I don’t use a lip liner or a lip brush: I just shove it on,” she laughed.

Kate also uses liquid foundation and bronzer. She has many favourite products and hates it when something she loves can no longer be found. The star has a cunning way of getting round that problem though.

“I tend to keep [old make-up], it’s terrible,” she laughed. “I like one thing, then it goes out of production, so I have to phone up the artist and beg for more. They discontinue the best products, it’s really annoying. I’ve got a lot stockpiled.

“I’ve got a thing about sticky – it can’t be sticky [on my lips]. From doing so many shoots when they get the wind machine out and my hair sticks to me. I get the fear.”

The model would love to create an entire make-up range and it’s something she might do in the future. She enjoys the way cosmetics can transform women, although she doesn’t wear them all the time.

Her nine-year-old daughter Lila Grace prefers her bare-skinned, with Kate waiting for the time when she develops an interest in make-up.

“Oh, yes, I always take my make-up off, because otherwise my daughter will come in and say, ‘Mummy, tut-tut.’ She doesn’t like it. She likes the fresh-faced, natural mummy, when I’ve got my hair in a bun and no make-up on,” Kate said.

[From Belfast Telegraph]

Kate’s appeal is very “high street” and translated well into a Topshop clothing collection for several seasons running, so a lipstick line with Rimmel is the perfect extension of her brand, which is not exactly high class but highly affordable and slightly dangerous. However, I do disagree with her about Rimmel’s sticky factor — I have tried their glosses, and they stick like crazy. Their lipstick is okay though, but it’s pretty inexpensive, and you get what you pay for. Regardless, I can’t wait to check out Kate’s new lipsticks when they eventually show up at Target because, you know, I’m classy like that.

Here’s some photos of a (mostly) barefaced Kate heading towards and from London Fashion Week:

After a decade of using lipliner (using the cheapie ones to the expensive designer liners like Dior), I don’t see how it’s necessary for lipstick application. As for colour retainment/longevity, that also depends on the amount of pigment in the lipstick. It’s just an additional expense that is marketed by every makeup artist. Anyway, with the cigarettes that Kate smokes, it won’t matter because the vertical wrinkles she is likely to develop will defy any amount of lipliner or lipbrush. Hopefully she won’t be one of those unfortunate women smokers who develop wrinkles on their upper lip to have lipstick bleed.
As for lipbrushes, they are only necessary when applying a liquid based colour or gloss.
Yes, the old blotting technique. Whether it works or not is anyone’s guess. I’ve never seen a difference, and it also depends on colour pigment – some companies use less pigment, others more and if they use more, then there is no need to blot. Still, there is no scientific evidence to prove that blotting works, that is makeup artist propaganda. You blot more, apply more, blot more ie use more lipstick.
Ah the inflated lies that cosmetic companies create to sell accessories like lipliners. The entire beauty industry is just a bollocky industry – it’s all about wastage and lies. Like Kate says: she hoards stuff because it is discontinued just when you find something that suits. These companies are sadists that are all about the dollar.
Five years on and I still have a Clinique lip gloss, that I use sparingly, because it’s been discontinued [the bastards!!!].

I was noseying through her Twitter page the other day and found this quote…..

“I want to live my life in a way that when i get really old, i look back at my life and say: aaah I lived it, not survived it.”

I do the same damn thing. I worked for MAC Cosmetics for 3 years, and it horrified some of my coworkers that I did that, but I have thin lips. Lip liner makes me look like a drag queen, and the brush is totally unnecessary. The Rimmel lip gloss IS sticky, but the clear gloss they sell is absolutely fantastic. It’s a very high gloss, which I LOVE, and I believe is better than some stuff I’ve got by Clinique, Chanel, etc.

Man, she is becoming a chatty Cathy lately. Even without a gang of interviews the woman has been successful. This, the spread in Vogue, what is going on? Is the success waining or is she preparing to drop something big (and I ain’t talking about lipstick).

    @Auds: Nice post 🙂

I heart the Moss. To me she is the only REAL “fashion icon” out there. The media tends to use the term too lightly on a bunch of wanna-be fashion girls.

Moss has launched so many trends it’s not even funny. Years from now we will fully realize this.

  6. dena says:

Lipliner is a joke. I am in my early 30s now and bought one for the first time this summer. At MAC. I returned it after a couple of days.

I have full, fairy well-defined lips and it just made my lips look clownish and oversized.

  7. Heatheradair says:

If I had a professional following me around, applying lip liner, I’d probably wear it.

But my “5 minutes and I’m out the door, whether I’ve put on any makeup or not” routine doesn’t leave time for lip liner.

Well, that and it’s too damn hard to find a color that looks natural.

  8. Kelly says:

Loooooove Kate Moss. She’s just so cool.

I’m totally with her on the lipliner – I have only ever had ONE that worked worth a damn -a Clinique color from a million years ago. It was a perfect neutral. And of course they don’t carry it anymore. Other than that, I think it’s useless and weird-looking. I either use a light-colored lipstick (Lancome Beige Tulle, which I’m SURE they will discontinue) or a red Clinique, Dubonnet. Both would look ridiculous with lipliner. I just swipe on the beige, and pat on the red, and voila.

I read the original article, and what’s above totally cut out where she said lipgloss was not for her. She said she’d been on too many shoots where her lips got stuck in it. ITA.

The one thing I’d like to know is her skincare regime, and whether she wears SUNSCREEN.

Finally, Jamie Hince is “ruggedly handsome”? Is that a joke? I always think of Michael K. calling him “Count von Count.”

  9. KLaw says:

I second Dena’s post. My lips are already defined so the lipliner makes them look clownish. I wish we could post photos on here and give each other tips. That would be fun!

  10. Gine says:

I hope she does do her own makeup line–unlike a lot of of other models and celebrities, she actually seems to know what she’s doing and has real taste when it comes to that kind of stuff. I bet it’d be good.

  11. ZenB!tch says:

I’ve never seen the point of lipliner or a lip brush. Lipstick comes off and you have to “shove it back on” anyway are you going to carry the whole kit around.

There is nothing more useless than those giant kits with 45 shadows, 10 blushes and lipgloss in them. I’m not going to carry the whole bloody kit for the gloss!

  12. smh says:

lipliner is only necessary for women who had a blemish near the mouth and/or had the lipline somehow distorted, it does heal over time but it takes a while. and also back in the 90’s it was quite fashionable to have fuller lips, so those liners along with dark coloured lipsticks came quite in handy. you can’t give an illusion of thicker lips if you have no lip liner or you’re using a light coloured lipstick. right now full lips are still in fashion but those who can afford them just get injections and women in general prefer lipgloss which makes them look thicker and fuller anyway.

  13. Joe's Mom says:

I’ve always liked her. I think she’s so beautiful and unique. Seems nice, too. I was worried during the Pete Doherty phase. NEVER could understand what she saw in him. I was so relieved when he called her a “dirty old rag” or whatever that horrible remark was. I didn’t think she’d ever go back to him, or even talk to him again after that, and maybe it saved her life, for all I know. I was thinking her relationship with Pete could have been heading toward something like Any Winehouse and Blake Civil-Fielder’s. Glad she’s where she is now.

  14. Tazina says:

She has beautiful lips, full and delectable looking.

Older ladies can sometimes benefit from lipliner as they develop vertical lines around the mouth. The lipliner can prevent lipstick from bleeding into those lines.

  15. naomi says:

lipliner is mostly best for shaping lips, or preventing bleeding (especially if you have lines aound your mouth) and I found in my experience it makes my lipstick last longer.

  16. Victoria says:

Age has taken away all her cuteness. She is not interesting to look anymore.

  17. sally says:

I’ll never understand how this wonk eyed woman became a model.

  18. sue says:

I have always secretly liked Kate. After all the drugs she has done and the smoking, she still looks amazing. Any other woman would look dragged out & worn out. If I do use lip liner, I use clear lip liner. It seals in your lipstick and you don’t have a noticeable ring around the mouth. My sister-in -law is a makeup artist (mostly musicians) and says she hates lip liner and rarely uses its. It can actually thin out the lip if used improperly. Only uses it for aging lips, people with vertical lines above the lip, and people with really thin lips. Kate has none of those.

  19. Isa says:

I actually love lipliner. I use one a shade darker than my natural lip color to help redefine my lips after I’ve put my foundation and powder on. I always make a mess. I line my lips lightly and slap some chapstick on. I don’t wear lipstick because I don’t feel it looks right on me. I don’t wear lipgloss because my hair (which is down to my butt) gets stuck in it. Annoying.

I also use liquid eyeliner instead of a pencil. I get a thinner line and I find it’s easier to correct mistakes with a qtip.

Also, I love the dress she has on in the top picture. I’ve always wanted one light that but I don’t have the proper arms or shoulders for one.

  20. cruiz2 says:

I love Pete! Wish him all good stuff!

  21. jayem says:

That fourth picture down looks exactly like Vanessa Paradis. Johnny certainly has a type, doesn’t he?!
