Kate Bosworth’s new ad campaign for Vanessa Bruno: frozen & scary?

bos3

I know I’m a little late in getting to this, but I’ve just watched one of the most bizarre commercials I’ve ever seen in my life. Kate Bosworth is the newest face of Vanessa Bruno’s clothing line – The Bos replaces Lou Doillon, who is, let’s face it, infinitely cooler and chicer than The Bos could ever hope to be. Anyway, the commercials – the 30-second one came out a month ago, but a “full-length” commercial (at 2 minutes) just came out in Europe, and dear God…they are rough. They’re like an acid trip of strangeness with only The Bos’s skull-like face cavities to ground you in reality. Her eyes are crazy. Her lips are crazy. The expressions she makes are crazy. The part where she’s raising her arms at the heavens while propped up in a tree – that’s my favorite. My least favorite is all of the weirdness with the horses and all of the backwards running stuff. Was I supposed to be looking at the clothing?

LØV from Vanessa Bruno on Vimeo.

Its ridiculous, right? Are you still going to tell me that Kate Bosworth isn’t getting lip injections? SHE IS.

The designer, Vanessa Bruno, told the press that The Bos was a natural fit for this Nordic-themed line, saying: “She has the style of a Parisienne without being from Paris. She’s a true free spirit, does her own thing, makes her own decisions – exactly the aesthetic of the label. When we first met, we clicked so much, it was as though we already knew each other.” The Bos has the style of a Parisienne? If I was a Parisienne, I think I would be very insulted.

I love everything about these ads. I usually don’t love KB, but I think the designer is right…she represents the line well. Fun stuff!

  2. Jackson says:

I would call those clothes 1970s Amish Cavewoman. Do not like. KB’s face looks pretty good, too bad the rest of her is total twig.

  3. Gwen says:

She looks downright scary in the first photo *shivers*

  4. Leigh says:

Don’t like her.. but kind of love the commercial.. is that wrong?

  5. Dee says:

I only watch 14 seconds and I couldn’t go on any longer. Very creepy/possessed feeling to it.

  6. Rhiley says:

She looks like a character from Night at the Museum. Seriously, she could be one of the cave persons in the Museum of Natural History.

  7. Nev says:

fashion should only use real models.

  8. KLO says:

She looks like a chick from a concentration camp who used to look pretty before the starvation and dressing in rags.

  9. podzol says:

Like the ad, like the Bos’s look … but she still couldn’t act properly within it. Seriously, Kate needs to give it up and do high street modeling instead. Nothing wrong with that, girl.

  10. Quack! says:

    That was weird…

  11. Lairen says:

I actually really loved this commercial when I first saw it. In fact, I even think I bookmarked it. It’s unique and intriguing, and allows your imagination to work a little bit and try and fill in the blanks to understand what’s going on.

If it was an advertisement for say, Target or JC Penney’s, then yes, this is way too bizarre. But it’s for a high-end fashion line. So it’s not strange for it to be very creative or conceptual at all.

  12. Fabianne says:

It’s an odd video. I like the Scandinavian look of the ad as well as the music. The Bos kind of ruins it though. Her face looks so tight and leathery. Her acting prospects seem to be wearing thin so she has to resort to these fashion gigs.

  13. mary simon says:

@ jackson – lol, 70’s Amish Cavewoman – good one!

  14. Quest says:

    Ice Queen

  15. Liza says:

The video was amazing, and as usual Kaiser, you completely FAIL at understanding anything “fashion” related.

  16. Kimbob says:

@Jackson & @mary simon…yeah yeah…that was a good one, @Jackson! I’m not much of a fashion horse, that’s for sure, but if this is an ad to showcase clothes/fashion..then, to me, an EPIC FAIL. I kind of like the ad…kind of eery/Nordic, but for a fashion line…no.

Well, if Kate is injecting her lips..so what? It looks very natural, & I think that is the point. Where I call out, & have a problem w/celebrities altering their looks through injections/surgery..whatever, is when it LOOKS BAD OR OBVIOUS. So, whatever Kate is having done, kudos to her.

  17. ulrica says:

Can you stop doing fashion posts Kaiser? You very obviously don’t understand it and have very little knowledge about the “high fashion” industry.

  18. madpoe says:

WTF – bitch try to cut me with a look in the first pix!!!…she wanna fight?

  19. grabbyhands says:

I didn’t watch the commercial but the first photo looks like it should be from The Shining.

  20. UKHels says:

does her own thing and makes her own decisions? is that why she’s glued to her stylist?

perhaps she’s trying to get Alex back by being all ‘nordic’ JOKE!

  21. Danziger says:

Oh I can’t stand the girl, but in these ads, she’s stunning. So are the videos, they fill their purpose.

  22. sandra says:

Argh – clothing for gaunt girls! Shoot me if I look that malnourished in a pair of green pants … too skeletal looking.

  23. CC says:

Miss try-hard can’t seem to decide if she is a “model” or an “actress”. Not that it matters she’s not particularly good at either.
Doesn’t affect me much, I’m not a clotheshorse or follow designers that aren’t “there” already (only familiar with big, big names, not that I know their actual work I only know the brand), so, Vanessa Bruno isn’t a name I’m familiar with, so doesn’t bother me…too much. I’d rather see the Boz unemployed but…oh well.

  24. ds says:

It’s just a, as Beyonce says, hommage to this
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T7bQGCdOuMo&feature=youtube_gdata_player
And that’s I think a year old video

  25. glyrics says:

Give it up. She’s no longer dating your Nord. She’s very pretty. Stop women bashing!

  26. Elizabeth S. says:

I like it, although she normally doesn’t impinge. I really don’t understand the vitriol of this piece.

  27. sosuzy says:

    Simply Gorgeous!!

  28. sally says:

    Who is Kate Bosworth?

  29. Amy says:

I’m looking at some old photos of her now, and I’m pretty sure her lips have been that big since 2002. So I’m going to vote ‘no’ on the injections.

  30. Kimberly says:

I’ve never understood why designers pick women that used to be celebrites to be their ad gals?

    Lindsay Lohan
    Kate Bosworth
    Jessica Biel
Do they all by drugs from the same dealer or what?

  31. Laura says:

@Elizabeth S – after reading this site for more than a year, I’m quite certain Kaiser just has animosity toward all skinny women. She hates them all, whether the reasons are justified or not.

Kate’s lips have also always been that big.

  32. cr says:

glyrics: Oh, please, don’t try and bring out the womenhood unity crap to prevent people from insulting Kate. It has nothing to do with ASkars. And everything to do with her. Of course, she’s completely over Alex now:

Now Bosworth has opened up about her romance with Polish, who directed her in his upcoming project Big Sur.

She tells The Sunday Times Style Magazine, “He’s a special one. There’s nobody in the world I admire or respect more. When I look at him, it’s not a crazy infatuation, it’s more like we are each other’s life partners.”

I also don’t think she’s doing plastic surgery or collagen. Facial peels, yes, under the knife, no. I’ll give her credit for that.

  33. LittleDeadGrrl says:

Odd video and odd clothes but I don’t blame the Bos for these ones. She makes some weird faces but it feels like this is what the director wanted out of her so I blame the art direction on this one. I can see what they wanted to do and it almost works but fails … just looks weird.

  34. amc says:

@cr I saw that BS she’s trying to spin about life partners. Girl don’t even change her sheets between guys. Now she’s spewing nonsense about Orly breakup from 5 years ago …..trash is trash no matter how many favors get called in. Where I’m from she would be called a hooker not a “fashionista”…..just saying

  35. Me says:

She is so beautiful. Her face is gorgeous.
Why did they made her do those silly things/ faces?

  36. Ramie says:

Why does everyone hate her? Jealousy that she dated Alex Skarsgard? She is beautiful. She has a delicate porcelain doll look…frail, pale, & intense. Very artsy in this shoot. Forget “Blue Crush”. I like her the way she is now, even if I’m the ONLY one!

  37. cr says:

amc: Having finally been able to read the whole interview-the Daily Mail repeats the Times stuff, she actually sounds coherent and down to earth (much better than that GQ interview from a few years back). So if you didn’t know anything about her, you’d like her from the interview. But the interviews are so ass-kissy it’s off-putting:
that Kate Bosworth, doesn’t she wear it well? Forget the films she’s been in – The Horse Whisperer, Blue Crush, Superman Returns (as Lois Lane, no less) – how right does she always get it on the red carpet? How rare is it for her to be papped without looking completely on trend? Clock that blue dipped hair she was seen rocking at a recent Coldplay gig, for example. And, unlike all the other Hollywood clotheshorses out there, who you just know have been styled within an inch of their lives, one gets the distinct impression that Bosworth, 28, does most of it herself.

    And I guess vertigo=stalking.

Ramie, I don’t hate her. But I don’t like her. And it’s not because of her boyfriends. To misuse a quote: there isn’t any there there. So for a small segment of the fashion world to try and sell me that there’s a there, it’s annoying.

  38. Sunlily says:

She just doesn’t appeal to me. I don’t find her pretty at all. It has nothing to do with who she dates or her shitty acting. I just don’t get it. Like, I don’t want any of those decrepit looking clothes. I’m sure that has more to do with the designer than the model though.

I’m pretty much here for the Owen Pallett music. He’s great.

  39. Shannon says:

Umm I like the music & the fact that she’s not singing. However, for a fashion ad, I don’t feel like the clothes were really displayed. Like, who is their target customer based on this commercial? Nordic mountain girls? IDK. She emotes in this about as well as she does in movies (i.e. not at all)

  40. Ming says:

God, I HATE self-serious art fuck. Date Northman. Two years later, you automatically turn into a Northwoman. Who lives in a scandinavian/Alaska environment with horses, who create clothes for their Northwoman.

Horsemade clothes turn Northwoman into schizo-Bosworth/Northwoman hybrid, who screams in Christmas trees like Jodie Foster in her best “Nell” days. This is crap, with or without Boswoman from the north.

  41. DottieDot says:

Kaiser, please stop ending your headlines with a question. It is very annoying and very Perez Hilton. If you have an opinion express it and don’t try to soften it with a question mark. Geez I am going to have to stick with just Dlisted if this keeps up.

  42. Bodhi says:

@Laura ~ Kaiser hates skinny women? Really? Then how do you explain her love of Angelina Jolie?

And to those bitching about how Kaiser doesn’t know about high fashion & therefore shouldn’t write about it: No one is forcing you to read this block. Kaiser is just as entitled to her opinion as everyone else is. If it pisses you off, then don’t read it. It isn’t rocket surgery, folks.

Personally, I can’t stand KBos. I think she is a terrible actress &, other than Blue Crush, is famous only for her striking & unhealthy weight loss. She does look like a porcelain doll, in that she looks like she’d shatter into a zillion pieces if she fell on the floor.

  43. Ally says:

The French will eat this up (and I love the French, lived there for years). They have no irony about B- and C-list American celebrities. They’re all famous magazine people to them. In fact they call them “les people” in hideous, needless franglais.

I even think the Bos is a good match for Vanessa Bruno. Better than the recent ads for Isabel Marant with Gisele Bundchen. Both designers’ look is about dreamy, skinny Parisiennes who make expensive new clothes look like artfully collected vintage. Gisele’s sporty, commercial look was daft with that designer.

  44. pato says:

    god, what a stupid ad.

  45. Sarah says:

I like the add but I don’t like her over acting. While she may be classically beautiful in a technical sense, she is not attractive. There is no spark or light to her and she seems a bit too up herself. She always comes across to me as rather cold and calculating.

  46. Jover says:

I fully agree nev and so do many others but we don’t call the shots; I agree kimberly, it makes no sense Jessica biel shilling revlon won’t make me buy their product; in fact i might purchase some other brand just knowing that jessica has made enough as an actress now she needs to shill for revlon to make even more money; did Lancome’s sales go up because they paid Julia Roberts 20 mil I don’t think so Many designers like the hollywood honchos are just out of touch.

  47. Melissa says:

It’s funny. I was trying to understand what Kate’s saying in the video and it almost looks like, “YOU OWE ME! EVERYONE OWES ME!” That part was just like the art was trying too hard. Other than that part, everything else was interesting to look at. And I liked the green pants at the beginning.

  48. cerulean says:

I didn’t care for the ad. I love art and fashion but sometimes it tries to hard to be both. This a good example of too much try.

Kate does not look good in those green pants. She looks like a patient at an eating disorder clinic. There is skinny where you look good and then there is druggy skinny. She looks like the latter.

  49. sauvage says:

    I like the commercial.

And I don’t have an opinion about the Bosworth, who I’ve seen in “The Horse Whisperer” only, back when I was a teen. So, I don’t get the hate. She was with Alexander Skarsgard, who everybody seems to love despite knowing nothing about him other than his good looks – let’s face it, he’s an actor, as far as I’m concerned, he could be the biggest asshole playing Mr. Nice Guy in interviews, I’m not saying he IS, because obviously I don’t know him either – it didn’t work out, no matter who left whom or if it was a joint decision – so what? Nice people leave other nice people all the time. Relationships don’t work out all the time. So, either Kate Bosworth is a major bitch. That would make Alexander Skarsgard a complete idiot. OR she actually has her qualities, as has he, and they simply didn’t work out as a couple. Which HAPPENS. He doesn’t seem particularly heartbroken either, last I recall, he went home with that girl after the Comic Con. So he’s fine, she’s fine, and they didn’t trash each other in interviews after the split.

My point being: I’ve never heard stories about her being rude or treating her fans badly or being a diva or killing puppies. So, my question is: Why the hate towards somebody you have never met, most likely never will, at the same time all the love for her ex, who you never met and most likely, never will meet? I don’t know her either and, as stated before, I don’t have a particular opinion about her because I HAVE NEVER MET HER. But I find all that hate directed towards her highly irritating.

  50. F5 says:

    Ring 3 >_>

  51. Kasey says:

So I did think this was overall weird and seemed like they were advertising for some tranquil mental institution instead of clothes. I will proudly admit to a lack of and general disinterest in “high fashion” and save beignets and macaroons, most things French (I spent a month there so I’m talking from my personal experience).

I don’t care either way about Kate Bosworrh (career, relationship etc) but do NOT find her pale skin, blend-in pale hair, sunken cheeks, bony limbs or blue eyes attractive. That pale, skinny thing is not attractive to me but I can still see people like that as pretty, handsome or good-looking (e.g. That Amanda girl from Mama Mia). In my opinion, the Bos is neither of the 3 but truth be told, that’s what high fashion is into, like it or not.

That being said, I did kinda like the first part where she was in reverse, looking like she was dancing and putting her clothes on (or off?). TRES COOL. I think if they had her change into NICE clothes and not gone off the deep end with the cavewoman wear, horses, trees, weird-wall of water etc. I would have loved it.

  52. normades says:

Vanessa Bruno is not high fashion, it’s ready to wear. That said, I love her clothes. And yes it’s very parisienne.

Lucky b* is getting all that stuff for free.

As for people calling out Kaiser for not being very “fashion”, well just express your own opinions in the comments so we can all discuss.

  53. Sara says:

    That’s pretty bad.

I laughed at the part where she is screaming at the camera, pretty ridiculous indeed.

  54. cr says:

sauvage: People don’t like her because she often comes across as a talentless famewhore, whether it’s in fashion or acting. That and she can’t seem to be seen without having a boyfriend, and therefore gives the impression of unable to be alone.
Ted C, in a rare moment of coherency, mentioned this summer that while on camera she’s dull, she can have a certain charm in person. I suspect that works well in the beginning of her male relationships. She’s moved on with MPolish and perhaps she’s correct, he is the one. And if so, good for her.
As for Alex, while I highly doubt that he’s been chaste/celibate since the breakup I don’t think he had sex with Alicia Vikander (sp)at Comic-Con-I think Lainey got that one wrong-AV’s got a bf and they were spotted after the party with a group of people, not just each other. I think Lainey really wanted them to hook up, I just suspect that they didn’t.
And Kate and Alex are not going to trash each other in interviews, he’s too professional and she’ll be too in that regard.
And not everyone who comments on this site loves Alex, or Orlando Bloom, or whomever else she’s dated.
In the end the dislike for Kate is based on Kate, not who she dates.

  55. spinner says:

    She looks hungry.

  56. nikki says:

Hmm, I’m getting a real weird hybrid Twilight/Titanic vibe from that part when she’s in the top of the tree wearing the (hopefully fake) fur shrug and waving her arms in the air like she just don’t care.

Kind of a Victoria-slash-Sparkles-slash-I’m-king-of-the-world inspired moment??!

Perhaps I’m not the target market 😉

  57. cr says:

nikki: I suspect most of us aren’t the target market! 🙂

  58. lulu7 says:

Hmm! recalls to mind that ridiculous ad/short that Katie Holmes did about hair by Frieda, not long ago.
    Remember “The decision”.

  59. YvetteW says:

At least Kate is not singing this time. But the ad doesn’t make me want to buy the clothes. That is the bottom line.

  60. TheGoodRain says:

I LOVED the clothes. I hope (but doubt) that the fur collar is faux. Maybe the key with this commercial is to watch it on mute, like I did, and just focus on the clothes.

And say what you will about her acting skill, but the girl’s got a beautiful, beautiful face.

  61. Kelly says:

I didn’t watch the commercial (at work – Gallico-military Amish chic does not fly around here). However, I love Vanessa Bruno, and I do follow Kate’s personal style, which I think is fantastic – quite chic yet subdued (I even have a folder of .jpegs of some of her best outfits and makeup – she wears makeup wonderfully). I also subscribe to her jewelry “thing” (don’t know exactly what to call it) that she developed with her stylist. Basically, you can choose to buy a piece of jewelry each month, or opt out. I haven’t been thrilled with everything, but I’ve gotten a few pieces that I really, really like. They have a little section on each item’s page with styling suggestions, and a little video with someone (or Kate) modeling the piece. All this makes me believe that her style is actually her own, unlike a lot of actresses, who literally can’t dress themselves in their personal lives – like Jennifer Garner, Jessica Simpson, even an Ashley Greene.

  62. smh says:

I like it. The colours and spectacles are beautiful and it looks interesting, the way she shouts and watches, ok maybe not -that- interesting I wouldn’t watch it over a couple of times. But it’s still way better than any of the disturbing Calvin Klein ads imo

  63. Kelli says:

It’s always a palserue to hear from someone with expertise.
