Scarlett Johansson covers Vanity Fair, claims those tata photos were for Ryan

Scarlett Johansson takes the cover of the December issue of Vanity Fair, although I’m not sure if she’s actually promoting anything. Her next film is We Bought A Zoo, but I can’t even see if that film has a release date yet. Mostly, ScarJo just did the cover so she could talk about her nude photos (they were for Ryan Reynolds, when they were married), her relationship with Woody Allen (joined by hypochondria) and her divorce. I would love to know if Scarlett discussed the Sean Penn interlude, but I guess I’ll have to wait until the full interview comes out:

Scarlett Johansson does not seem the least bit ashamed when discussing her recent nude-photo scandal with Vanity Fair contributing editor Peter Biskind.

“I know my best angles,” she says with her trademark insouciance. “They were sent to my husband,” now ex Ryan Reynolds. “There’s nothing wrong with that. It’s not like I was shooting a porno.” She adds saucily, “Although there’s nothing wrong with that either.”

Johansson, who has been active in campaigning for various Democratic political leaders, including Barack Obama, tells Biskind that nearly one term later “we’re all guilty of being idealistic, I and everyone who voted for him.” But in response to being asked if she would work for him again, she says, “It would be irresponsible not to.”

She also discusses her friendship with Woody Allen, spawned by their shared tendency toward hypochondria and, subsequently, shared Purell.

“He shakes a lot of hands,” Johansson explains. “I’ll squirt some in my hand and then squirt in his.” She also has a bizarre penchant for diagnosing him. “The only reason why Woody and I are still friends is because I’ve diagnosed all kinds of his skin tags, lesions, ailments. I’ve prescribed things for Woody that he’s then asked his doctor to prescribe for him.”

Despite their compatibility, after working with Johansson on several films, Allen decided they should take a break: “I have every intention of working with her again, but I just didn’t think it was a great idea for either one of us to work together too intensely, picture after picture. I didn’t want her to be burdened by, ‘Oh, she’s in all the Woody Allen pictures, it’s so predictable,’ and she’s my new muse, and all that silliness.” Johansson does not share his opinion: “I don’t think anything’s played out. I’m waiting for him to write my Citizen Kane.”

Johansson says that her role in a revival of Arthur Miller’s A View from the Bridge in 2009 opposite Liev Schreiber “completely took me over in every way. I’d spent four months bleeding all over the stage, completely exposed. I felt I was forever changed by that experience. It was unbelievable holding that Tony.”

Her emotional and physical exhaustion after the end of the run was compounded by her subsequent divorce from Reynolds. “I didn’t really know what to do with myself. It was such a strange time. There was nothing that was interesting to me. I had a very public separation. It was difficult. I felt very uncomfortable.”

[From Vanity Fair]

I remember when Scarlett was just the hottest thing ever and seemingly every regular and celebrity guy wanted to get with her – when was it? Circa 2006-07, I think. And then she married Ryan Reynolds and aimed for a more low-key lifestyle, and she dieted away her curves, and suddenly, most dudes moved on to crushing on other chicks. Plus, once she and Ryan were over and Scarlett starting boning Sean Penn, I think men and women were really turned off. I kind of wonder if Scarlett’s newly discovered happiness to do sexy photo shoots and give revealing interviews is part of her attempt to regain a male fanbase?

  1. Venefica Delirium says:

    I’m so over this broad.

I used to think that maybe she had a little bit of class, but that was all a facade, apparently. She’s awfully quick to trade that in when it’s convenient for her.

She may not look as cheap as the typical Hollywood bimbo prototype, until she opens her mouth.

  2. Marjalane says:

You’re right- I used to just think she was boring, but then after she dated Sean Penn, I found her contaminated and boring.

  3. Kriss says:

Why is she on the cover anyway? She is one of these celebs I don’t get their “fame”. She is not that talented, not that good looking, not that interesting. She is just very average woman.

  4. Addie says:

This woman has a pretty face, but is otherwise very annoying..nothing interesting in her.

Why is she blue for most of this shoot?

  5. Talie says:

I like how she still calls Ryan Reynolds her husband–I’m sure Blake loves that.

  6. Ann says:

Good idea to stay away from Woody Allen. It’s creepy have a senior citizen call a decades younger actress his “muse”.

  7. Eve says:

I don’t think she’ll ever talk about Sean Penn. She might have thought it was super cool to date an older, Oscar winning actor but now, after the backlash, he has to be her shamef*ck –and nobody wants to talk about that.

  8. LL says:

Her best angle is the one that causes us not to see her.

  9. INeedANap says:

Seriously, this chick has dead eyes in EVERY picture she takes.

  10. ShanKat says:

    “Saucily”…oh brother.

  11. Emily says:

That hair isn’t doing her any favors.

In the (Woody Allen) movie, Match Point – which I somehow thought was going to be a light romantic comedy – she played a total hussy and I’ve always associated her with that character. Which I guess speaks to her acting skills, but she proceeded to play a hussy in a lot of other movies (He’s Just Not That Into You), and proved it in her personal life.

  12. Quest says:

    Blame game…smh

  13. Lady_Luck says:

The only respectable thing she said in the entire interview was that voting for Obama was a mistake.

Other than that she just comes across as a conceited tart.

  14. silverqt says:

Do we care? I don’t know anyone who thinks ScarJo is a moviestar. She used to be sexy but the Penn thing hasn’t done her any favours. Now she just comes across as a snooty, self-absorbed wannabe who thinks she’s so risque and sultry. Please. Ryan is well rid.

  15. Alexis says:

Can she please just be blonde again, or a (not-too-dark) brunette? She seems to think it’s cool to have hair colors that look terrible on her.

  16. Original Chloe ) says:

I find her oddly appealing in several roles but I still can’t get past the fact that a lot of her acting comes from mouth breathing.

  17. jen says:

She’s out gooping the Goop in this interview.

  18. Danny says:

I get the impression she is used to having things squirt into her hands a lot.

But “I’ve diagnosed all kinds of his SKIN TAGS”?!! Ugh. I need to wash my mind out.

    Shes’ a classy one.

  19. fwiw says:

Of course she says the nude pics were for her “husband” … it sounds better than saying they were for Sean Penn, which maybe they were … or maybe she saved them and sent them to more than one guy. LOL

  20. hypnotic says:

@Lady_luck reading is fundamental she doesn’t say she “regretted” voting for him.

I never liked Scarlett and I stopped subscribing to VF four years ago.

  21. Turtle Dove says:

She’s incapable of making herself look sympathetic… kinda makes you wonder what Ryan had to live with, huh.

fwiw (19) – you took the words right out of my mouth. “Ryan can I say that the pictures were for you?” Why would anyone still have three year old pictures on her phone? Not sure I’m buying this explanation.

As for her hooking up with Penn – chicka has confessed to being a nit-picker and we all know she fancies herself a brilliant ingenue… Citizen Kane no less… so I could see her going to Penn to show Ryan that he’s not a “real” actor. He’s only known for RomCom and comedy. Well… that Penn hook up did her no favors like Eve (7) said.

Scarlett just needs to stfu and work and let this whole business fade away. Every time she opens her mouth she makes the situation worse.

  22. Orange Cone says:

“I kind of wonder if Scarlett’s newly discovered happiness to do sexy photo shoots and give revealing interviews is part of her attempt to regain a male fanbase?”

    Yes.

Also, somebody smack me in the back of my head… my eyes are stuck

  23. Amanda G says:

I think she has one of the hottest bodies ever, but she’s a terrible actress and isn’t a very interesting person.

  24. FingerBinger says:

I don’t get all the hate for her. I like her. I also think her shenanigans or whatever it was with Sean Penn made her even more interesting.

  25. N.D. says:

Oh, come on. Penn was her rebound relationship right after divorce. Who isn’t guity of not being themselves at times like that and making odd choices?

Re pics – why wouldn’t they be for her ex-husband? What’s so unbelievable about it? They couldn’t be taken when she was dating Penn, she was thinner at the time, wasn’t she?

  26. Jane says:

‘We Bought A Zoo’ has had a release date of 23 December 2011 for about a year.

  27. Dudette says:

These excerpts are boring. Even with a “scandal” aka the nudies, she’s still not interesting. Why did she get the cover? By her own admission, she’s overly critical and quick to judge. Ms Scarlett is in for a whole lot of loneliness and broken relationships if she doesn’t soften up her attitude.

  28. Lady_Luck says:

@hypnotic: reading between the lines is fundamental too. And that’s exactly what I did.
