Hugh Grant has become a father for the first time at the age of 51

wenn3498765

This might be one of the most random pieces of gossip ever. Or at least this week. According to Us Weekly, Hugh Grant, the British version of George Clooney, is now a first-time father. What’s bizarre is that Us Weekly seems to have gotten the scoop of this (meaning a wink and a nop from Hugh’s rep), BUT – we have no idea who the mother is, if Hugh adopted or if he just knocked up some girl. Here’s Us Weekly’s report:

Forget any weddings or a funeral — Hugh Grant has a baby to tend to!

The British actor, 51, became a dad for the first time, welcoming a baby girl in early October, a source close to Grant tells Us Weekly exclusively.

Reps could not be reached for comment.

The identity of the baby’s mom has not yet been revealed; back in April, Grant was romantically linked to stunning Chinese actress Tinglan Hong.

“He’s going to be a great dad!” the source tells Us. “He’s beaming about his daughter. He’s not with the mum anymore but he’s absolutely thrilled.”

In 2007, Grant told Vogue he was ready to be a father. “As much as I adore myself, I’m quite keen to find someone else to care about more,” he said. “I remember reading a Warren Beatty quote when he finally had children and said what a relief it was to not be all me, me, me.”

Although the About a Boy actor has never been married, he famously dated fellow Brit Elizabeth Hurley for 13 years before parting amicably in 2000.

He and British writer and socialite Jemima Kahn dated from 2004 to 2007.

[From Us Weekly]

Well, this explains why Liz Hurley is looking so eager to be moving on with Shane Warne. Usually, she always has Hugh as a back-up (as in, she knows she could always get back with him, worse comes to worst). As for Hugh and just HOW he’s become a father – my guess is that he knocked up some sort-of girlfriend. Don’t hold me to that! My instinct is that this is more Jude Law than Kristin Davis, you know? Hugh probably didn’t adopt because he felt a paternal urge, he more likely “accidentally” impregnated some random.

Oh, update! Gossip Cop talked to his rep, who said: “I can confirm that Hugh Grant is the delighted father of a baby girl. He and the mother had a fleeting affair and while this was not planned, Hugh could not be happier or more supportive. He and the mother have discussed everything and are on very friendly terms.” Haha, my instincts were so dead on, right?

That being said, congrats to Hugh! (Is anyone else surprised he hasn’t had a vasectomy? I am. I bet he goes for it now.)

“He and the mother had a fleeting affair” I love the Brits – what a way to put it!

Congrats to Hugh and his fleeting baby mama.

  3. Cindy says:

Is it weird that I think he will make a great Dad??????

  4. Julie says:

    Well, he’s been blessed.

  5. KLO says:

Well, I’m happy for him. YAY 😀

And I’m happy for the mother of the baby also. Not the worst man whose baby to have, right?

  6. Mrs.Krabapple says:

Hope he didn’t give the baby or its mom any diseases he may have got from screwing hookers. Why any woman would want this man is beyond me. Guess some are just to shallow, or mercenary, to care.

  7. Rhiley says:

Wow, this was the surprise of the day. It seems to me that Hugh was pretty adament about not wanting children of his own. I always imagined him to be less like his character in 4 Weddings and more like his characters in Nine Months and About a Boy. I bet he stops by to see his daughter and makes an appointment with urologist all in the same go.

  8. silken_floss says:

I’ve always liked him. Congrats! 🙂

  9. kay says:

    puffy.

but with that accent, still so hot.

  10. Relli says:

Oh my Hugh Grant has a daughter….. mind. officially. blown.

  11. Quest says:

    I just adore Hugh…Congrats.

  12. TXCinderella says:

Although he seems charming in most of his movies, he seems like in real life that he would be just like the character he played in Nine Months.

  13. lucy2 says:

Well, congrats, glad he’s happy about it.
Seemed pretty clear from US Weekly’s article that it was a knocked-up situation, not a planned thing or an adoption.
Wonder if it truly was a surprise or if this is yet another woman looking to cash in? Either way, hope they’re both good parents to the baby.

  14. Violet says:

Whoever had his baby is nuts to have unprotected sex with someone who uses hookers in between girlfriends and random hookups. No doubt the baby mama was hoping to get pregnant by a wealthy man.

(Aside from being concerned about diseases, you’d think celebs would be worried about paternity suits and take precautions. But I guess most celebs have zero impulse control.)

I’m sure you’re right about Liz Hurley. My other thought is that he’s taking this so well that she must be kicking herself for not “accidentally” having his baby years ago.

  15. Gwen says:

I’ve got nothing! Glad to hear he sounds so happy and supportive though. I think he could end up being a good dad.

  16. grace says:

I have always liked him – and Ms Krapapple, do you have a leash on your man? yep,Hugh got caught – dont mean your husband aint doin the same nasty.
Waych who ya talk about, your husband face may be the next to be plastered. Gez, how many years ago was that anyways? How long do you hold grudges?

  17. Denver Danni says:

    …that he knows of…

  18. freeloveforall says:

There something about Hugh I find completely charming. Maybe it is just that character he played with Julia Roberts where she’s a famous actress and he’s just a man. What was that called? I find Clooney to be an arrogant entitled ass. Hugh comes across as a likable guy.

  19. Emily says:

Ahaha and now he’ll have to protect his new daughter from men like him. 😛

  20. Patricia says:

He’s a dork but I bet he will be a great dad. Lucky baby.

    On another note –
Holy hell he has aged horribly. I hope the mom has better genes.

And when is he going to get those big yellow horse teeth fixed? That is a hideous sight.

  21. eternalcanadian says:

I think it is karma Hugh had a daughter. Seems men who treat women rather shoddily end up having all daughters. Karma’s pretty cool that way. 😛

  22. fabgrrl says:

He may now be a father, in the biological sense, but I highly doubt he has become a “dad”.

  23. Kaboom says:

    Good for him!

Hi Gossip Friends, This is not new news in the UK and shouldn’t for you either we don’t think?? See links above (ha! we got the message!:-))

We had heard some whispers last week but were waiting to hear officially what it was, you never know do you? VB was having another boy, for goodness sake!! It’s only been reported here in the national news in the past couple of hours! Wonder why you got it first state side?

Anyway congrats! We think he’ll make a good dad!

    Have a good week 🙂

  25. Ann says:

    Dang. He looks terrible.

He’s going to be 70 when the kid is 20. Too old to be a Dad.

  26. Jen34 says:

He seems so very unpaternal. Oh well. At least he’s will to take on the responsibilty of fatherhood. Maybe.

  27. Victoria says:

free i too love hugh and notting hill. yes! but sadly must agree tha skeezy past would mean nookie from him.

  28. Cheyenne says:

Babymomma is probably getting a very good settlement out of it. Anyway, congrats to him, especially since he’s happy about it.

  29. serena says:

I guess not, he wanted to be a father badly. I hope the girls inherits his eyes.

  30. Cheyenne says:

@serena: I hope the baby inherits her mother’s eyes. She’ll probably be beautiful.

  31. Kim says:

51 is WAY to old to have a child. Im guessing the mother is much younger.

  32. Jayna says:

Kind of sad. He won’t have the joy of his little girl every day from the beginning. But this little girl will change his life. He and Liz were together longer than most marriages and he was with Jemima for like three years. These last years he’s like an aging playboy with different young things.

Actually, Warren also said he was grateful for meeting and marrying Annette, because continuing on as a womanizer as he got older and older wouldn’t have been pretty. He didn’t say it exactly that way but the gist of it was that.

I am always shocked Hugh hasn’t settled down as he hit fifty.

  33. Beth says:

His teeth are really yellow in that last picture. That’s kind of gross. “About a Boy” is one of my favorite movies.

  34. Rita says:

    @Kaiser

    I think you missed it.

This is “getting ahead of the paternity lawsuit” fall-out or “She’s got me by the short hairs but I want everyone to think I’m a good guy”.

  35. Turtle Dove says:

How old are the people saying he’s too old to have a child. Get real.

In the my mind is blown news… I NEVER thought I’d hear Hugh’s name and has baby in the same sentence.

Well, some are saying that it might be Tinglan Hong, but it could be a random one nighter or very short romance. Time will tell maybe.

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-1380101/Hugh-Grant-new-Chinese-girlfriend-Tinglan-Hong-carrying-baby.html

Edit – Rita (35) – good point. Add to that – After his explosions over being treated shabbily by the press, he has to make sure that it’s presented properly.

  36. Jayna says:

BTW I love Hugh. His British charm and wit and good looks slayed me for many years.

  37. Samigirl says:

I really like Hugh, and ok, sure he banged hookers, but for Christs sake, this is his ONLY child in 51 years. I got knocked up at 20, so I guess he’s ahead of me. For some reason, I think he’s going to be a great father to a sweet little girl. It’s a great bond. I’m 25, married, mother to 1 and a fetus, and I still climb up in my father’s lap 🙂

  38. carrie says:

    congrats!!!

  39. Gelina Whiddon says:

    Congratulations!

  40. JaneWonderfalls says:

I’ve always adored Hugh Grant! I’m going to say this, I thought he was to good for Elizabeth Hurley 🙂 Congrats Hugh!

  41. melanie says:

he will be a good dad…he is just that kind of guy.

  42. anne_000 says:

“Hugh Grant has become a father for the first time after a former girlfriend gave birth following a ‘fleeting affair’.

The actor, 51, has had a daughter with Tinglan Hong, who is 19 years his junior.

The pregnancy was not planned and the child, who has not been named, is now five weeks old.

Grant is not believed to have been present at the birth but he is said to have spent around half an hour with her the following day before heading to Scotland to play in a golf tournament.

Despite U.S. reports last night claiming that Miss Hong gave birth at the beginning of October, the Daily Mail has been told that she had the child on the afternoon of September 26.”

“However, Miss Hong – who had been living in Merton, south London – is said to have moved close to Grant’s £3million home in Fulham, south-west London. According to Westminster Register Office, the birth had still not been registered yesterday. Legally, it has to be registered by next Monday.”

  43. MorticiansDoItDeader says:

“I think it is karma Hugh had a daughter. Seems men who treat women rather shoddily end up having all daughters. Karma’s pretty cool that way.”

@eternalcanadian, ITA! Some of the biggest a-holes I know are fathers to daughters. My husband, grew up taking care of his baby sister because his mom was too drunk to do it and his older sister was off stripping. We have two boys. I’m guessing if we try again we’ll have a third. He was far too good to his all female family.

  44. Mrs.Krabapple says:

grace — the fact that ANY man (or woman for that matter) MAY have sex with random hookers is not the same as KNOWING FOR AN ABSOLUTE FACT that THIS PARTICULAR MAN does so.

How long ago was it, you ask? A better question is, how long does an STD last?

It’s sad that women can even defend a man like that simply because . . . what? He’s good looking (or USED to be, in Grant’s case)? Rich? He pretended to be a character in a movie, and we like the character or the movie? Yeah, that’s a good way to judge people.

  45. Dani says:

I’m not convinced he’s as thrilled as his rep says he is. According to the Daily Mail, he was not present for the birth and spent more days at a golf tournament than with his new born baby.

  46. DeeVine says:

Somehow I don’t think he is too upset about having this child. He was with Liz Hurley and Jemima Khan and produced no babies. He sounded like a pretty careful guy about not sowing his seed.

However, now that he is 51 and probably feeling a bit more mellow and coming to terms with his age, he will have a little girl to dote on whenever he feels like it. He doesnt have to change nappies or have any sleepless nights, go off and play golf whenever he wants and sleep with other random women.

Not a bad deal for Hugh and baby mama. Not so great for baby growing up without a daddy, but hey, a single happy parent is better than a household with 2 miserable parents who do not care for each other.

  47. Ann says:

I can’t believe some people think he’d be a “good father”. Like he’ll change diapers, get up at night or be there when the child needs him.

  48. jamie says:

I can’t believe he never got a vasectomy and I’m surprised he made it all the way to 51 without knocking up a gold digger.

  49. theaPie says:

Oh good grief. I’m with Ann. There is no comparison to Warren Beatty. Nice try Hugh.

  50. Catherine says:

I love Hugh and am really happy for him. He seems like such a kind guy with a great sense of humor. I hope it serves him well as a Daddy.

  51. justez says:

@Ann, I’m going to disagree with you. My dad was 50 when I was born (I’m 20 now ironically and he is 70 years old) he still works to help put me through college and provide for my younger sibling. Sure he has a few back problems and so on, but he was in no way too old to be a dad.

  52. Ally says:

I think Hugh Grant is at his funniest in on-air interviews (though very charming in movies, too), but in real life I imagine he’d be like a slightly better-looking Jeremy Clarkson — a clueless, self-centred, car-obsessed private school twit.

I like Lainey’s heading (below): Hugh Grant is the father of a baby girl and releases a dickhead statement.

Indeed. And check out his cranky mug in their photos together, too.

  53. jh says:

Yikes, poor Hugh! Not the first man to be duped by a famewhore though and not the last, I’m sure.

  54. Carolyn says:

I’m suprised no-one’s got him to be a $$$ baby daddy by now already. Didn’t he learn anything from Jude Law? He’s not in a relationship with the mother and he’ll be forking out $$ for the rest of his life. There’s no way he’s happy about this!

  55. shawnamarieanne says:

A fleeting affair? How about, we are no longer together. Why does he need to make a statement about the briefness of the relationship? What’s he implying about his baby’s mama? She’s a slut? Then he’s a fool for even sticking his dick in her without wearing condoms.

  56. Eleonor says:

At a certain point this would have happened, and one day there will be GRANDPA Hugh!

  57. MacScore says:

“Hugh Grant, the British version of George Clooney…” hahahhhaaaahhhhaaaa! Too funny. Except Hugh does seem to have a sort of self-deprecating sense of humour and a modesty that, even if it is completely invented, is somewhat endearing. So he’s a dad. Great. And no, 51 is NOT “too old to be a father” – how absurd. For many men, it takes them that long to gain the wisdom and maturity they need to leave their egos behind and truly care for another person.

  58. Arde says:

    better later than never…or not?

  59. Birdy says:

“He and the mother had a fleeting affair”

If things were friendly and just about the welfare of the kid, he would have made a kinder statement. Maybe she has been dropping hints about a payday or selling her story and baby pics to the press and this was a pre-planned statement to release if he was put in the position of her trying to use the kid as a payday. There is no (or little) shock value now and if she tries to sell the story she is just the fling who got pregnant. And considering his history with the press intruding on his private life, I can’t imagine he willfully choose to make a statement about his private life without any provacation or even a whisper about it in the press.

So it seems to be a public way of saying to the world and the babymama I am only paying child support and no alimony?? Define from the outset that there was no relationship as such. Protecting himself from a possible claim for assets for herself and not for the kid???

Also 5 weeks and no name for the kid yet – Hugh must of demanded a DNA test after the kid was born to be sure it was his. Momma may want to put his name on the birth certifcate and he wanted proof before he would consent. In the UK, both parents have to attend to register the birth if they are not married to each other and they want the father’s details to be recorded in the register and on the birth certificate.

Really, would you have a kid then leave the country on a golfing holiday the next day if you were certain the kid was yours?

  60. Ann says:

“Yikes, poor Hugh! Not the first man to be duped by a famewhore though and not the last, I’m sure.”

If only there was SOMETHING he could have done to prevent unwanted pregnancy. But at 51, he can hardly be expected to know how women get pregnant.

  61. Jen34 says:

    @Birdy

I agree with everything you’ve said. Very interesting about unmarried parents having to show up together to register the birth. Yeah, I bet Hugh is ‘thrilled’.

  62. kristipistol says:

I love him and I bet he’ll be so cute with a little girl.

  63. Nev says:

he was great in Two Weeks Notice…always thought he and Bullock should’ve been together.

  64. hammer says:

Oh please, why are you all congratulating him? He didn’t plan this, nor is he “pleased” about it. If he were “pleased” he would have been present at the birth and would have spent more than 30 minutes before whisking himself off to a golf tournament. You people are why PR make such insane statements, you aren’t really concerned with reality, just the fairy tale. Jude Law was raked over the coals (and by the way, someone up there, Hugh was at this way longer than Jude Law, why should Hugh learn from Jude? Anyway, ever hear of condoms not being 100%? Ever hear of single people hooking up? It happens, all single celebrities hook up, even your precious idols)

  65. Cleo says:

I REALLY hope this isn’t true. Let’s leave dating male celebs to the Devon Aokis and Sasuki Mitchells of the world and Mrs. Nicholas Cage (sorry, Coreans!) but let’s leave the Chinese on the shelf like the businesswoman in James Michener’s Hawaii who only did BUSINESS with Moses leaving the bathtub sharing to the Japanese employee.

Considering how old Hugh Grant was before he became famous, he should have fathered all his progeny before he entered the spotlight. He might even be a GRANDFATHER by now. Who knows, who cares. Just please do not do a Richard Gere Bai Ling Red Corner thing for reals.

I am Chinese and we don’t need that kind of attention!

  66. Anon73 says:

does anyone else think it’s crass, in the statement Grant release that he describes his baby mama as a “fleeting affair” ?? i mean, not that i DOUBT that was not the case. but… dang, that is cold !!

  67. Laura says:

    Aww I love Hugh!
