Kal Penn’s “25 Things You Don’t Know About”: hilarious or dumb?

Since I’m half-Indian, I do tend to keep track of the Indian-Americans who are doing well in Hollywood. I’m always pleasantly surprised when Mindy Kaling ends up in a movie, I was thrilled beyond belief to see Sarita Choudhury on this past week’s episode of Homeland, and I’m very happy that Kal Penn exists and continues to work in Hollywood, even with his job in the Obama White House (he keeps taking leaves to work in Hollywood). Kal is promoting A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas (and he’s also on How I Met Your Mother, apparently), so he decided to do one of my favorite tabloid features, Us Weekly’s “25 Things You Don’t Know About…” I’ll admit to laughing at several of these, especially the Djibouti one.

1. I wanted to be an astronaut when I was a kid. I still do.
2. My favorite drink is water.
3. Once I was in line behind a woman who was telling her friend what a horrible actor Kal Penn is. I tapped her on the shoulder and told her I agreed.
4. I’m fascinated with countries that aren’t universally recognized, and I want to visit Transnistria.
5. I think books are the perfect gifts.
6. I’ve always wanted to be on Sesame Street.
7. I love making people laugh.
8. I’m terrible at math and science.
9. I’m finishing up a graduate program in international security.
10. I like Nascar.
11. I think science is cool.
12. If you follow me on Twitter (@Kal_Penn) I’ll try to entertain you.
13. One of my favorite books is The Mole People.
14. I think almonds, pistachios and cashews are disgusting.
15. I love to cook, without any of the above.
16. I once talked about elections to someone who said his Ls like Rs. It was hard to keep a straight face.
17. I went to Camp Lemonnier in Djibouti. Sadly, no T-shirts say I WAS ALL UP IN DJIBOUTI.
18. I want to know who decided to run those commercials with a panicked man saying, “Stop using those old, dirty catheters now!”
19. I’m a fan of the high-five.
20. I’d like to adopt a brown Lab.
21. I went snowboarding at a mall in the United Arab Emirates.
22. Tacos are the perfect food.
23. Sometimes people ask me if I’m Harold. Sometimes I say yes.
24. I have one of those leg lamps from A Christmas Story.
25. I am thankful every day for the blessings we all have.

[From Us Weekly]

Yeah, I’ll also admit to finding Kal very sexy, and I usually don’t go for Indian dudes (I have a type, and it’s Michael Fassbender). CB thinks he’s hot too – it’s probably because he seems like such a political nerd. Wonks are so HOT. I can’t believe he’s doing more post-graduate work too – he already has an MA, right? Let me check. Oooh, guess not. He just has a bachelor’s from UCLA, and now he’s doing his post-graduate at Stanford, according to his Wikipedia. Good for him. Hot stuff. He can get all up in my Djibouti.

  5. theotheryael says:

i will admit to mildly crushing on him. i find him ridiculously entertaining. and he’s probably my favourite part of how i met your mother right now.

  6. fabgrrl says:

Gee, I *used* to find him hot. But he is looking rough here, and maybe a little bloated? Well, time marches on for all of us. He actually still looks pretty fine in the Harold and Kumar Christmas ads, so maybe this is just an off-day?

  7. kristipistol says:

hahaha, I work at the first company who starting doing the “I had to re-use catheters” commercials!!!!!!!

  8. Sarah says:

So hot. I love the novel more but even so, he was really great in The Namesake.

  9. El Kiddo says:

I have to admit that this is the first i’ve heard of Transnistria. I’m ashamed.

  10. Hautie says:

Funny smart men are always attractive. But so few men really work on those traits. Not when being a total douche-bag pays off for them while they are younger.

  11. RobN says:

    #26, I haven’t stopped eating since I left House.

  12. taylor says:

He’s cute, funny, and if that 25 Thing’s bit is any indication, he doesn’t take himself too seriously. So basically he’s perfect.

  13. MollyB says:

LOVE HIM! Since I am forced to watch Sesame Street every morning with my toddler, I would love for him to be on!

  14. Quest says:

    He’s funny and cute

  15. Phat girl says:

I also own a leg lamp from christmas story! It is one of my most prized posessions. I now love this guy.

  16. Kayleigh says:

Tacos really are the perfect food.

  17. lin234 says:

I had to wiki Transnistria. Learned something new today. Burritos are the perfect food when folded right and not drippy.

He needs to ask John Cho for his secret youth formula. Dude is 39 years old! And it’s not just because he’s Korean.

  18. kazoo says:

i want to have 10,000 of his babies.

  19. LittleDeadGrrl says:

Don’t find him attractive at ALL but I have to say this was one of the first 25 things I didn’t hate from a celebrity. Showed he has some brains …

  20. Venefica Delirium says:

    He seems cool.

  21. Stubbylove says:

Love Kal – can’t wait for the movie!

  22. Hanna says:

I find this more interesting than the Justin Bieber Hoax.

  23. gee says:

His was really good! A nice balance.

  24. Nanea says:

I agree with so many of his 25 things, for starters – 1,3,5,6,7… – so yeah, I like me some Kal Penn!

  25. lucy2 says:

    #3 is really funny.
I don’t find him attractive either, but I like that he got involved in something he is passionate about and that he’s pursuing more education as well.

  26. Kloops says:

He’s hot. He’s definitely my type: Funny, smart, with a splash of nerdy. The perfect man cocktail.

  27. kibbles says:

What happened to John Cho? He seems to have lost 10-20 pounds and looks sickly. Kal Penn used to be cute but he’s not aging well. Neither is Cho.

  28. danielle says:

Ooh, can’t wait to see his new movie! I might actually go to the theater for this one! (I usually wait for DVDs, since the bf has a projector and I’ve become addicted to watching movies in my sweats while drinking wine)

  29. MissyA says:

When I was in high school, we had a year-long intensive program called “Discover the World”. One of my classmates was an “ambassador” for Djibouti, and his presentations never ceased to be LOLZ amazing.

At one point during the year, we had to give a presentation on music/arts from our respected countries, and in lieu of doing any actual research, this white kid from rural Wisconsin free-styled. He got our whole class to chant, “Get Dijbouti up! Get Dijbouti up!”

Sophomoric, sure, but we were sophomores, so there. 😉

In any event -now I have an in if/when I ever meet Kal Penn! I’ll seduce him with my vast *cough* knowledge of Dijbouti culture. Then I’ll serve him a glass of water, slap him on the ass, and tell him to get his sweet lassi in bed.

The things I’d do to that man. . .

  30. ZenB!tch says:

I’m half Mexican so an intelligent man saying the taco is the perfect food – I’m in LOVE (and he rocked on how I met your mother)… is he single?

I’ve never had an overall opinion of Indian men but this one is hot. It’s his brains and nerdy but not dorky ways. I <3 nerds and hate dorks (Napoleon Dynamite types).

  31. ZenB!tch says:

PS: One of my friends has a thing for John Cho even though he’s not her usual type so she and I can star in the next one: Harold and Kumar go on a double date.

  32. ZenB!tch says:

Wait is he a regular on How I Met Your Mother? I don’t normally like that show – last week was the first time I sat through an entire episode and it was because of him – and no I have never seen a Harold and Kumar movie. That was the first time I had heard the man speak, I think. Well maybe at some Obama thing but who pays attention?

I’d never heard of Transnistria either and despite my comment above I do have a BA in Political Science and International relations. Transnistria is more random than Andorra and Moldova.

  33. Lindsey G. says:

OMG…#5 makes me love him ever moar!!!

  34. Eve says:

    Hmmmm…I prefer John Cho.
