Angelina Jolie helps get “Villa Angelina” apartments for Bosnian refugees

wenn2799459

Do you remember this ^^^ photo? It’s from a UNHCR trip that Angelina took to a refugee displacement center in Rogatica, Bosnia in April, 2010. The two ladies in the pic with Angie are sisters, Lena and Mara Babic. Remember those names. Angelina met one-on-one with many of the refugees who are still homeless more than a decade after the Bosnian War. Well, after Angelina (and Brad) visited this displacement center, they kick-started a donation drive to ensure that many of the refugees could be placed in more permanent housing – and they ended up getting a $500,000 donation from the United States government, directed to the housing situation in this one displacement camp. Anyway, the new apartment building was just opened up, and the refugees have named it “Villa Angelina”.

With tears in their eyes, 13 Bosnian refugees moved Thursday into ‘Villa Angelina’ — a brand new U.S.-financed apartment building built after Angelina Jolie drew attention to their plight.

The 13 mainly elderly tenants were the last in their refugee camp, an old rundown school for people displaced by the fighting in Bosnia that ended 16 years ago. Some cried as they walked over the thresholds of their small flats.

For years, authorities in Rogatica tried to find a permanent solution for them, but it wasn’t until after Jolie and her partner Brad Pitt visited last year that the U.S. agreed to donate $500,000 for housing. Jolie is a goodwill ambassador for the U.N. refugee agency. The refugees in Rogatica are convinced that her lobbying aided their cause.

The new tenants could hardly wait for the speeches to be over to receive the keys to the fully furnished small apartments in the bright yellow downtown building. Villa Angelina is the only building built in Rogatica after the 1992-95 Bosnia war that killed 100,000 people and left hundreds of thousands homeless.

Surrounded by low, grim houses and apartment buildings, the yellow building stands out for its beauty — one more reason to name it after the Hollywood star, people in Rogatica say.

After years of sharing a room with her sister and a bathroom with the rest of the refugees, Lena Babic, 79, finally held a set of keys in one hand and a photo of herself, her 73-year-old sister Mara, and Jolie in the other.

Even after she unlocked the door and sat on a sofa she and her sister now can call their own, Lena never put the photo down.

“Angelina saw everything,” she remembered, recounting the star’s visit to her old tiny room with the broken sofa next to the bathroom everybody used for washing clothes and dishes.

“She said, if I can do anything, you will have your own bathroom. She could not have done it on her own, others also helped, but she is the one who is in my heart,” Babic said, pressing the photo against her chest.

Babic opened drawers and cupboards in the kitchen, then returned to the living room and sat down, only to get back up again and check the closets — everything was so perfect, she gloated.

The apartments belong to the municipality but the former refugees will be able to stay in them as long as they live.

“It’s a real pleasure to be here, to see these people, how happy they are to establish their new homes in Villa Angelina,” said Patrick Moon, the U.S. ambassador to Bosnia, who opened the two-story building.

[From The Associated Press]

Isn’t that a nice story? Yes, Angelina is NOT quoted and she was not at the ceremony, but they named the apartment building after her and sweet little Lena Babic clutches her photo of Angelina. Yes, I just wrote this story because I thought it was particularly sweet, and THIS is why people call her “Saint Angelina”. She’s not a saint, I know – she’s just a compassionate person who is capable of effectively shaming her government into donating $500,000 so little old lady refugees can sleep in their own apartments. It’s lovely. I dare you not to be moved.

    Nice. Very, very nice.

  2. Eve says:

Do you remember this ^^^ photo?

I do! And I also can’t stop giggling now because of what Michael K said (in his original post) about the lady on the right.

    Isn’t that a nice story?

Yes, Kaiser. It’s a lovely story.

I dare you not to be moved.

Wanna bet there will be people here trying to spin this to make her look bad? Wanna?

  3. Tiffany says:

You are right Kaiser, that is a great story. You are right, AJ is compasionate and puts her money where her mouth is and knows how to follow through *looking at you Madonna* Also, those sisters are adorable.

  4. lisa says:

I remember that and there are great videos out of their visit (she and Brad). And when they left they said they would do what they could. This woman and the others had only ONE bathroom. that was used for everything. Now that has changed. It is one thing to walk a red carpet and wear a cute outfit and pose for pictures. Quite another to leave and actually do something. This visit was while they were in Venice when Angie was filming The Tourist. NOW about just over a year or so they have a decent place to live.

    I love this quote..

“She said, if I can do anything, you will have your own bathroom. She could not have done it on her own, others also helped, but she is the one who is in my heart,” Babic said, pressing the photo against her chest.

Yeah but some people will scream about this country. Well there are other celebrities. Ask what they are doing after they leave the Red Carpet

  5. manda says:

did she and brad donate any money? not trying to hate, just wondering!

  6. kat says:

yes I believe she is a very compassionate person..after all she has venus in Cancer…she feels like a mother torwards others…Bravo Angelina!!

  7. Cherry Rose says:

But of course, people are going to say why didn’t Angelina donate that $500,000? She has money, blah, blah blah. *rolls eyes*

That’s really awesome. You can say whatever you want about Angelina, but how many celebrities (especially female) do you know that actually get among the people they’re helping?

  8. The Original Mia says:

That was a sweet story. I’m so happy for those refugees.

  9. Mika says:

I don’t really understand why people slag celebrities for doing charity work. I knew nothing about Bosnia last year, but after these photo came out, I looked it up because it was brought to my attention and I wanted to learn more. Yes, Angelina was the reason I forced myself to learn about Bosnia, and that’s silly of me, but at least I learned.

  10. Kaboom says:

Madge would probably have been there for the pictures, then sold the new home out from under the old biddies before they could move all their stuff in.

  11. NM9005 says:

Yes, the story is very heartwarming.
The top photo still kills me, the look on that lady’s face (Mara?), she doesn’t give a flying fuck. Old people are so cute sometimes.

“For years, authorities in Rogatica tried to find a permanent solution for them, but it wasn’t until after Jolie and her partner Brad Pitt visited last year that the U.S. agreed to donate $500,000 for housing.”

It’s sad that the U.S. decides to chip in to help those poor people AFTER celebs/rich folk urge them to help. And why doesn’t the EU help these people? I’m sure more people lobbied to help in these situations.

Ugh, I should just be happy that Jolie helped these people. At least they have a decent home now. If only more people were helped this way…

  12. Eve says:

    5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 paragraphs…brought tears to my eyes. GAH! I’ve become such a softy with age.

P.S.: Good grief! My comments take forever to be approved even if I don’t say anything reprehensible.

  13. minnie says:

elderly people are usuall helpless and forgotten… it’s good to know about this.

  14. Reece says:

“capable of effectively shaming her government into donating $500,000” *giggles*

Yeah this is a nice story. Good for the refugees to finally have a nice place.

  15. chainsawbuzzkill says:

Love St. Angie for this. Love America for it, too.

  16. Cheyenne says:

We are all put on this earth to leave it better than we found it. Looks like she is doing her part.

  17. HannahF says:

Bring on the war of words between the loonies and the hens!! I need some rainy Sunday entertainment.

  18. Jackie says:

putting her money, connections, and high profile to such amazingly good use. wonderful.

she makes other celebrities (*cough* jennifer *cough*)look about as deep as puddles.

  19. folly says:

lucky women,i am so happy for them
@kaiser,people like olivia and canuck can never be move by this type of gesture.good work brangie

  20. boo says:

I did get a lump in my throat, that is a great story, and so happy that Angelina was able to bring some happiness and their own place to these two deserving sisters. Go Team Angelina.

  21. Eve says:

By the way, I was beginning to have Jolie-posts withdrawals. Thanks for this one, Kaiser 🙂 .

  22. bettyrose says:

Her hair in that picture with the children . . . is looking that way naturally just a gift to her from the universe for being “saintly”? I’d like to think she didn’t bring a team of stylists with her.

  23. e.non says:

***Babic opened drawers and cupboards in the kitchen, then returned to the living room and sat down, only to get back up again and check the closets***

and these women will now be able to live their remaining years in a safe, clean apt. $500,000 for the goodwill created is cheap; considering one freedom drone missile costs $100,000.

  24. Julia says:

    ITA with e.non

I am very happy for this family but I am mad at our western governements that are more interested to take our taxes money and put them in destructive war mongering, wealth grabing enterprises than helping the poor in our countries and the refugees growing toll consequent to their destructive campaigns abroad.

When you see NATO late enterprises in Lybia and Côte d’Ivoire, they could have put 1% of that money building that home.

As a european citizen, i find this unacceptable that 16 years after the end of the war in our continent, some european citizens were still living in third world like refugee camps with all the money Europe put in NATO and other organisations.

Two thumbs up for Jolie’s involvement in this case and for the US governement.

  25. WhiteNoise says:

I loved that pic the first time round and now love it even more, reading this very lovely story. New beginnings, happy endings. Well done Angie and everyone involved, and hope Lena and Mara Babic and the other 11 residents live happily and peacefully every after in Villa Angelina.

I’d love to see pics inside the apartments. Maybe Lena and Mara could do an exclusive! 🙂

  26. mln76 says:

So sweet. There is nothing bad you can find to say about this but I’m sure the crazies will think of something.

  27. Jayna says:

@Tiffany, no reason to call out Madonna because you have no clue what she or others give that is never known by us. Gaga visited an orphanage recently in India and gave a TV and play station, a drop in the bucket to her. It was publicized. But guess what nobody focused on? That HIV orphanage has been funded for years by Richard Gere. That’s impressive. He spends way more than a TV. So really none of us know all that is given by stars.

But Angie rocks. She’s just an amazing person and humanitarian for sure. I am in awe of her.

  28. Eve says:

    @ Bettyrose:

Yes. She brought a team of hair stylists with her in that trip because all she cares about is her hair and image. She wants to make sure she’ll look gorgeous among the refugees.

P.S.: To anybody else who is (honestly) curious about the beautiful hair she’s showing in some of these pictures — those are probably the hair extentions she wore for, and during the shooting of, The Tourist (which took place around that time last year).

  29. gee_gee says:

The granny on the right? She is killing me with her facial expression. It seems to be saying “Can we watch tv now? I’m bored.” This made my day.

  30. minnie says:

    @ betty rose
This trip was when she was filming the movie the Tourist, and she was wearing long hair extensions. The flight from Venice to Bosnia is probably less than an hour, so they could have easily gone ina day trip.
In one of those trips I thinkk they stayed overnight, I do not remember how many times she/they have been to the area, what I do remember is tha Brad filmed one of his first movies there (I think in Montenegro?), and wanted to show angelina around, so they went sightseeing.

  31. Camille says:

Really lovely story. Thank you for writing it Kaiser :).

  32. angelus says:

This is a truly moving piece. And she’s still young, so there is much she can do. It’s wonderful to see people putting their energies to positive use. On that note, I haven’t been on this site long, but — why do posters use this as an opportunity to goad fights between hens and loons? And also, why call out other posters by name (even if they haven’t posted to this piece). It’s really antithetical to the spirit of the piece and puts a bite in the warmth. Just observing…

  33. NM9005 says:

@Jayna: Agreed, there are so many celebs who do goodwill but not making it public.

Also, how many regular people are out there, living with the poor, helping the needy? Or just volunteering inside your own city. It doesn’t matter how you help as long as you can do something for your community or other countries it’s fine whatever you do. Good deeds don’t have to be in-your-face visible to be recognized as good deeds. It’s not up to us to judge others (in comparison to Jolie that is).

Sidenote: I see quite a few people who seemingly can’t wait until someone post something negative, even referring to their “favorite” posters or the triangle. What is that all about? Just be happy this post is positive for once instead of dragging the negativity in yourself.

  34. Heine says:

That first picture is very telling in my opinion. And funny. And sad.

Anyway, I am so happy for the sisters who now have proper housing with their own bathrooms. They’ll be able to live out their winter years in relative comfort.

But I am frankly annoyed that it takes an actress to get anyone to do anything to help people. Why isn’t the EU helping these people?

EDIT: I agree with angelus and NM9005. This is a sweet story and some of you are spoiling for a fight. What is that about?

  35. foozy says:

how wonderful! i wish her and brad the very best..

  36. Tiffany says:

@ Jayma. Madonna, is that you? I am not down playing celebrity contribution, but that charity of yours, oops Madonna’s was a disaster and there was no follow through. And before you start, I am not a millionaire but I donate time and money when I have it.I’m not better than others’ people as a whole are good and compassionate.

  37. Madison says:

Way to do Angie. Doesn’t matter if she donated her own money or not, the main thing is she did whatever it took to get these apartments built for these people and now they have somewhere decent to live.

Unlike most celebs who see charity as nothing more than good publicity and a photo op, it’s always nice to see that there are some like Angelina, Brad, Matt Damon and Richard Gere who walk the talk and make a difference to people’s lives.

  38. Cheyenne says:

She is far from being a saint and I’m glad of that, saints bore the hell out of me, but I can understand why she throws herself into this work. It gives you a great feeling inside when you can see that your efforts to help make other people’s lives better have paid off.

  39. Jayna says:

@Tiffany, lol I am not Madonna. I think Madonna is an idiot for having that Kaballah con man and the others on her board who oversaw the project. The board misused the charity’s funds. It was a great idea, education for the children and a school, and she donated 11 million dollars of her own money towards that goal. What a waste. But I hope she does follow through also. But It is why I don’t donate to star’s charities. They are busy and don’t oversee. I only donate to one celebrity’s charity – Oprah. Otherwise stick to reputable charities.

  40. lisa says:

    @heine

I think some posters are on guard. it always happens that when there is anything positive about Angie or Brad regarding what they do.. some people have to find the negative. I guess when you see it time and time again you expect it all the time.

But Angie didn’t make this public. There is not a quote or statement from her or Brad for that matter. And even if there was would it make it less somehow. Public releases happen all the time. It is a way for organizations and such to show what they have done. Angie and Brad are not the ones that release statement. But the organizations they contribute to do so.

But this is positive and I hope for once it can remain so..

    Peace.

  41. Jayna says:

@Lisa, I think Angie rocks. And because of her Brad has really grown.

  42. miss_bhaven says:

I wish more celebrities did good deeds like this. They really do have the power to make changes. Good work AJ!

  43. dragonlady sakura says:

This story touched my heart. Please stop b@tching about Angelina’s motives and think of the positive. She actually does something good and everyone can do the same. I volunteer at the Food Bank in VA. This is a hard time of year for a lot of folks food and moneywise. Please donate any small or big amount to ANY local charity. Okay, I’m done preaching. =)

  44. samira677 says:

Nobody thinks Angelina is a saint. The funny thing is only the haters call her St. Angelina. I don’t think anybody is looking for a fight just expecting one. No matter what when it comes to Brad and Angelina most people can only write negative posts. I’m shocked that there’s only a few posts bashing Angelina. Usually there would be 100 post about why she didn’t donate her own money or why she publicized this.

  45. WhiteNoise says:

@Heine – “I agree with angelus and NM9005. This is a sweet story and some of you are spoiling for a fight. What is that about?”

Also wanting to agree with this. It’s pathetic, and those doing it and actually naming posters – who haven’t even posted on the thread! – are the reason these threads turn so sour. Irony or what 🙄 Grow the hell up.

  46. G says:

Let’s not fight about this. It’s a good story, period. The truth is that Angelina and Brad don’t stop doing charitable work when the cameras turn off. Sure, they use their celebrity status to draw attention to causes, but unlike other stars who we don’t have to name, they keep going even when the public has lost interest. Good for them, great for the people whose lives they’ve touched.

  47. Green_Eyes says:

This brought tears to my eyes. They made me think of my Oma…Angelina has a heart of Gold and the Spirit of a Champion when it comes to helping others….

  48. Criss says:

I don’t think any one posting on celebitchy has done anything close to the causes that Angelina has helped. No matter what you think of her magnetic appeal that Brad could not resisit, she has done more that most will ever to in 10 lifetimes and she knows it. She had dedicated herself to help the human race, she makes it very difficult to hate her, she is the definition of celebitchy.

  49. waq says:

It’s a very sweet story but why is Brad getting the credit? She’s the one who has been doing this for more than ten years and most likely it was her who used her connections in Washington to get these people a home. He tagged along, which is basically his life story. He tags along.

  50. lrose says:

Oops, not sure how my name got screwed up.

@ Eve – Overreact much? I’m pretty sure it’s okay to admire someone’s hair on a celebrity gossip site. (i.e. Rather than assuming a team of stylists, I’d like to imagine those tresses are all hers.)

@ Minnie – Thanks for the explanation. I thought these were recent pics (the Tourist has already come and gone from cable, so I wouldn’t have assumed a similar timeline.

  51. Turd Fergussen says:

Nice that these ladies were helped.

But I still think all celebrities are famewhores and ultimately, do things for their own brand. After all, she’s prominently featured in all of these pictures, isn’t she?

    Princess Diana she ain’t.

  52. teehee says:

Not moved. lol If I had the resources she has, I would have done a lot more personally rather than just get someone else to foot the bill. Its not like she cant afford it. So no- not impressed.
Which is not the same as saying it wasnt good or isnt valuable- obviously to the receivers it means their whole life. It just comes with a big inevitable “but” attached to it which is that not so much credit belongs to her as it seems, and dozens of others who worked to make this actually happen, get no credit at all.

  53. Cheyenne says:

@teehee: Her getting the government to pony up is what got the place built. Why should she have to pay for everything hersel? And to quote the last line of her film “Wanted”, what the f*ck have you done lately?

  54. Jen says:

“You are right, AJ is compasionate and puts her money where her mouth is”

Technically, she put OUR money where her mouth is. I’d be more impressed if she wrote the check from her personal account rather than from the already strapped-beyond-all-reason American taxpayers.

  55. anne_000 says:

Some of you critics are not reading the article correctly.

The article doesn’t say that the project cost only $500,000 to build. It says that was the amount she & others got the US govt to donate. So that means it could have cost more than $500k, & that it could be that she donated some of her own personal money too.

But even if it cost only $500k to build, having the US donate it w/ Angelina promoting it to the mass public makes the US look good. We needed to amp up our public relations image in the region, especially after the war we were involved with over there.

  56. emmabee says:

love love love her, and this story is sweet.

just look at her face in photos where she’s with refugees. that empathy and compassion is genuine.

angelina gets vitriolic attacks for everything/anything she does. it’s disturbing. thank you lena babic for stepping up to the plate for angie! hope they are all enjoying villa angelina.

  57. seri says:

    I totally shed a few tears!!!! <3

  58. autumndaze says:

She does good work for those less fortunate.

  59. the original bellaluna says:

Not reading the hate, but totally love that AJ brought much-needed attention to this plight.

Does it really take this much to address such a concern?

How shameful for us as a human race.

  60. Freya says:

    @49

    “Brad tags along.”

Jolie has been a good influence on Pitt. He has been good for her too. It’s great they found each other.

It’s wonderful to see the ladies are so happy with their new home and they feel Jolie had a lot to do with that.

  61. ADS says:

Her influence in this story cannot be denied but the amount itself is just pennies to her. She could build a country full of villas herself and still have plenty left over. I feel the same about celeb endorsed fundraisers/gala’s etc. Why attempt to get OTHER people to pony up when you have the funds to do it yourself? Celebs are a strange bunch. It’s all about keeping up appearances with them.

  62. Eve says:

    @ Bettyrose (# 50):

Puh-lease…AS IF your original comment (# 22) wasn’t an attempt of being snarky and didn’t reek of sarcasm — are you’re actually trying to suggest that “Her hair in that picture with the children…is looking that way naturally just a gift to her from the universe for being “saintly”? sounded sarcastic only to me and I overreacted, seriously?

The first part of my comment was clearly a sarcastic answer since I know she doesn’t walk around with a team of stylists nor I ever assume she does, and I know that her hair looked like that because of The Tourist (and I explained that in the P.S. — which you seem to have purposedly overlooked). By the way, the first two lines Kaiser posted say Do you remember this ^^^ photo? It’s from a UNHCR trip that Angelina took to a refugee displacement center in Rogatica, Bosnia in April, 2010. So…you didn’t read the main post either (or you would know that this happened before The Tourist was released in the theaters).

  63. Callumna says:

Her life transformation is one of the more surprising and inspirational of all time to me. From the heroine addict depressed admitted blood and sex freak to doing so much for others in world and her close circle is an accomplishment.

Her smiles are among the most genuine ones out there among Hollywood sect.

  64. beanie says:

*Tears* You can bet they donated some of their own money. Angie and Brad have donated many, many millions of dollars all over the world..some noted, some not. I’m so happy she found herself and has become an example that you don’t have to give into the demons of Hollyweird..(Linnocent) but it’s up to you to save yourself and by doing so you can save others too.

  65. Julia says:

This is not about Angelina Jolie or some random people in the internet looking for her to be impressed through her phylantropic deeds like she needs their validation. This is not about you or Jolie’s ego..

This is about 80 years old ladies who were 60+ years old when the war in a european country ended and who needed HER involvement somehow to fasten and make it possible for them to stop living in third world like condtions ON EUROPEAN SOIL so that somehow, some western government decided to intervene through their aid yearly enveloppe.

The questions shouldn’t even be raised on Jolie, the questions should be aimed at all those governments that somehow were involved in stopping the war, US and mainly Europeans, who were intimately involved in it’s aftermath, in the Kosovo creation as an independant state, in hunting down genociders but have let those refugees problems in their drawers like it’s the least of that region preoccupation.

While they made sure that the likes of late Milosevic, Karadic, Mladic (not caught yet) to be sent and taken care of decently in golden prisons in Den Hague, while they invested lots of money in the Kosovo rebuild efforts, in the investigation of corpes, while the the EU is involved in all processes for those countries to enter the Union and they have let rot that kind of situation on their soil ?

THis is where the questions should be raised. Nobody should live in refugees camps in Europe in 2011.

And it’s a shame that it needed Jolie and 16 years for 80 years old elders to have a decent home to live probably their last days in a decent home and have decent medical care.

Even dogs are best taken care of !
This is what is shocking and this is where the questions should be raised not on if or not Jolie has put her money in it.

How could a situation like this prevail so long in a western country baffle my mind.

  66. wunder says:

    Very nice! 🙂

  67. Sakyiwaa says:

So great! Missed her! This has been such a great week… the stupid tabs left her alone and I was so GLAD! Thanks to justin bieber, lohan and kim k. the tabs can report true gossip for once!

Wow. The Ecclestone girls ought to give their money to Angie! She’d spend it well. Kudos to Gere too!

I don’t know why people think she spends all her moolah on herself. She has six kids. She has a foundation. She doesn’t do ‘fundraising gala’s. Never makes as much as say Beyonce or Gisele made last year. She ‘recycles’ her clothes a lot (hello, black) and wears the same hairstyle a lot… It’s crazy to think she’s not being prudent with her cash. Lol!

Go Angie. Such a class act… sweet story!

  68. Nymeria says:

Congratulations, fellow taxpayers, for helping people who needed help!

  69. mamakowalska says:

She’s working her beauty and smarts in a most divine direction!!!

A celebrity who promises two little old ladies she’ll get them their own apartment and ACTUALLY DOES IT!!!!!!!!

    INSPIRATIONAL!!!!!!!!!!!!

  70. dr.bombay says:

It literally makes me laugh when others are saying *I would have done more* regarding AJ’s efforts. It’s very easy to sit on the sidelines and criticize her every movement. If you can do better, shut up and DO on your own level, stop smacking your lips together and badmouthing someone else’s efforts. Badmouthing AJ…yeh, that’s really going to help these people. IMO, you’re no better.

  71. lisa says:

    @mamakowalska

    so right…

To be true to your words.

I just love them BOTH.. I just do

  72. xploxite says:

I’m soooooooo Impressed by her helping the less fortunate ones. When I read in the news about those SHALLOW MINED Hollywood stars only thinking about themselves makes me love her & appriciate her more, way to go Angelina.

  73. katie says:

omg talk about celeBITCHY . bitch about something as moving as this.. WHAT THE F**K HAVE YOU DONE LATELY?? i am so jealous shes able to change lives the way she has. and if the govt made a huge donation, that doesnt mean angelina didnt throw some of her own money in. and, this is a celebrity site. to talk about the celebrities. im sure if you’d like to find out all the details about how this was paid for and who all helped you’d be able to find something if you took the time to find out without having it simply put in your lap. how can you criticize what shes done, and bitch that in this ONE article all the other people arent included and therefor they get no credit. you dont know that. UGH. BLEEGH. spitting on the goodwill of others makes me sick. ive been homeless, im grateful these people have a home.

  74. Meeshi says:

Must be frustrating to Angie that everytime she does a bit of good,

the people she hangs out with at the UN just go in and screw it all up again.

She is fighting a losing battle by sleeping with the enemy.

    I weep for her.

  75. misstrishm says:

I have loved Angelina ever since I saw her in Gia. I think everything she does is done out of the goodness of her heart. I love the picture with the two sisters they are so darn cute.

  76. DarkEmpress says:

It’s good that they have a home now but I must say it’s crazy for the US to be helping the homeless in other countries and there are homeless veterans in the US.

  77. DeeVine says:

I can’t stand her for many reasons but there are 2 saving graces: 1. Her kids and 2. Her charity work.

She knows it very well too and milks it to her advantage, but as long as the end result of her involvement yields results like this, she has my respect in this front.

  78. Snowpea says:

This is soooooo brilliant this story. On so many levels. So many things to analyse!

    a) The old lady on the right in the first shot looks hilarious! Like she’s thinking: ‘God I wish all these fricken photographers would piss off so I can have a big vodka on the rocks and watch Wheel of Fortune’. Plus, she kinds looks like ET’s mum.

    b) It always puzzles me when American celebrities trot around the globe in a fever of do-goodery when their own country’s health and welfare system is in a total shambles. Anyone seen Michael Moore’s ‘Sicko”? What an eye-opener!

    c) It’s totally unfair that Angelina was born clever, beautiful, compassionate, intelligent and kind. Usually when you meet a beautiful person they turn out to be totally vain and shallow or something else that undermines their beauty but Angelina SEEMS to have it all. Either that, or an excellent PR company working for her ; )

    d) Angelina undoes all the damage that the Courtney Stoddens, Doug Hutchisons, Chris Browns, Lindsay Lohans, Dina Lohans, the whole Kardashian family, the entire Bush family and Kid Rocks of the world do to America’s reputation. Those famewhores get so much international press one would be forgiven for thinking that the US was populated by total morons. (I know it’s not).

  79. Kelly says:

I am a devout Christian; my beliefs – although I may not agree with everything re: Jolie-Pitt, Hollywood, blah blah blah, I do think, and admire, that this woman has the right idea. I do believe she has changed – that many of her “haters” try to hold onto her mistakes/decisions in the past; but why? Are any of us beyond reproach? She is doing her part, and I’ve been to Bosnia and the Soviet Union, as well…the people there are the focus right now in a campaign we’re doing from church….God bless her, her family, all people suffering, and the people here, where we take EVERYTHING for granted; at McDonald’s today, I ordered a chicken sandwich to be eaten inside…it was given to me in a paper bag…that is huge in another country…a paper bag; we waste so much, when others don’t have water, food, or even to get to “our” basics: toothpaste, toilet paper, clothes…on and on…please reach out to others in whatever way you can.

  80. Mrs. Odie 2 says:

Kim Kardashian should attend the Angelina Jolie school of transforming your public image.

  81. Rosalee says:

Heck if that all it take for a government to cough up money for homelessness, I’m going to write her folks a letter requesting she drop by Northern Manitoba where First Nations people live without running water or sanitary washroom facilities, in overcrowded and moldy tinderbox houses.

  82. B says:

@ 51: Yeah, because Diana wasn’t a famewhore in the least.

  83. texasmom says:

D’aaaww! A sweet story and now I have a new activity: for each photo of la Jolie I can mentally write a caption that involves her reaction to someone’s description of their bathroom situation.

  84. Yay,Angie!! Eve** My Lady,been missin’ ya!!

  85. Jamie says:

Just because the money came after her visit does not mean it came through because of her visit. I do humanitarian work that recieves federal funds, so I know that these things are usually in the pipeline for some time. A lot of ordinary people worked very hard, probably for a very long time, to get that money, and the matter might have been settled but not announced prior to her visit. I’m glad that she brings attention to causes, but celebrities do not shame the government into doing these things that easily, and star power does not determine fiscal year spending. I’m glad the women are able to have a face to call a hero after their long ordeal, but let’s remember that it’s not so simple.

  86. Joe's Mom says:

She and Brad are good people. It’s for no other reason than they want to help. They give monitarily and they give of themselves, and they are teaching their kids that’s the way they should be. That’s what makes them special.

  87. teehee says:

So wait, Cheyenne ‘wtf have you done also’? Saying this doesnt change the validity of anyone’s viewpoints and its only hateful downsizing. I acknowledged the good of the deed. And still- asking that question makes no sense here. What does it have to do with anything? I can appreciate or not appreciate regardless of what Ive done- it doesnt give or take my right to speak or think away. If I list what I’ve done, more people will only be twice as offended because thats not relevant here.
I see it the way I see it and I have seen a LOT of good from LOTS of people. Maybe I am a lot more fortunate than you to realize this; because I see those who are far less capable or blessed working a lot harder to improve others’ lives, relatively speaking. But thats no reason to insult or demean me. Very ugly on your part.

Edit: I agree with Jamie- said basically the same thing as I did, but said it differently. That IMO is the truth of everyday charity vs one glorified event.

  88. Jaxx says:

You don’t do this kind of work for over a decade if it doesn’t come from the heart. And sure, I bet it makes Angelina feel good to see that her name can open doors but I believe she saw the conditions these people lived in many years ago when she was making movies over there and determined in her own mind to do something about it if she could. Clearly she can. It’s real and it’s admirable. People who criticize are jealous and feel small next to her own giant sized compassion. Instead of criticizing her why don’t THEY volunteer to do some good somewhere? There’s plenty to go around.

  89. Wow says:

I like her efforts to draw attention BUT
she could have come up with that money herself.

Ther is NO shaming here. The US government is not even remotely responsible to what happened to these refugees, and if anyone should have showed some sympethy it should have been Europe.

500,000 is something that Angelina can make in one afternoon of shooting a commercial.
Actually she makes 5 times that sum by doing some modeling, and there is no reason why the public in America would give that money when there are enough homless people in the streets of America.

It’s one thing to draw attention to all those places, and donate of her own fortune, and its totally another thing to take money of the American tax-payer and have it spent instead of doing your own donation.

    No praise from me here.

  90. Derpy says:

Julia, popping out of lurkerland to tell you that I am very proud of your English skills, they have been improving greatly over the past months I’ve seen you posting, and you always have such beautiful and thoughtful things to say. <3

  92. Elm says:

Beautiful story – thanks for covering it – I had not seen it in any newspaper

  93. Addie says:

This is one aspect of her life that people should not look for fault.

    She does WHAT SHE CAN.
She is doing a pretty good job at it too.

People got homes from this. If it was me…heck yeh I would be grateful to her for bringing attention. Who knows if they would have gotten these homes otherwise.

  94. sandy says:

    go angie

  95. Canuck says:

I would tend to agree with Jamie as well. A year and a half is just way too short a turnaround time from lobbying for money, planning, finding the location, architect plans, permits, tendering the job out as would be required, getting it built etc. The tendering process alone can take several months. Bureaucracy may grind small, but it doesn’t grind quickly no matter what country it is.

As for those criticizing and or wondering where Europe was in all of this, the website of the city itself mentions that the Austrian Ambassador was there, along with some official of an Austrian organisation of some sort, so it’s quite possible that the English speaking press may just be “forgetting” to mention the involvement of other governments. Or it could be that Jolie and Pitt themselves made the donation as is being reported in the French press. http://www.bhinfo.fr/villa-angelina-accueille-13,2139/

I’m sure that the people who have new homes don’t care where the money came from. Personally, I’d tend to think that Jolie and Pitt did give the donation since as noted above, the turnaround time from April last year to now is way too short for a government project. Plus it’s not so coincidentally finished shortly before her film on Bosnia comes out.

  96. Flan says:

@Wow, most western european countries give a lot more development aid a person than Americans do as a country. Also, a lot of American money counting as aid is usually for strategic purposes or downright military.

(this does not take away from the good work many individual Americans do).

  97. badrockandroll says:

    @Wow#89:
If you think that the US government is not even remotely responsible for the plight of persons in the former yguslavia, I think that you need to re-read your history of US policy and actions during the Clinton years.

  98. Julia says:

    @ badrockanroll

    Thank you !

NATO, aka the US and Europeans was massively involved in that conflict. The US looby hard for NATO troops to get involved and it was Clinton governement that push hard for it, and choose side to teh conflict.

I remembered clearly the personal and very visible intervention of Madeleien Allbright and the Russians and the Grreks (orthodoxes) who were against the US policy towards the Serbs. I remembered Allbright because as young as a I was I remembered that she tried to justify siding with the Albanians against the Serbs saying that she love the Serbs because they happened to be against Hitler during WWII and saved many Jews.

NATO troops, especially the Dutch troops were the ones who were stationed there, supposedly to protect the population and doing nothing during the mass rape, mass murders, staying still while those people were uprooted in front of them to be left in refugees camps.

Like I said they have a responsability especially in its aftermath, they have approved and put their money in the way former yougoslavia should be disbanded, in the way Kosovo should be independant. They have put thousands of millions of their money to rebuild Kosovo, to identify what’s left from corpes in mass graves and to hunt down criminals.

Just this year, the same organisation went into a very expensive campaign using our taxes money to launch wars in Côte d’Ivoire and Lybia and have recently sent the bill to Lybia so that their oil is now the price to reimburse,….and yet, during all this time, they couldn’t finance that home for the past 16 years and let those people rot in third world like refugees camp ? In Europe ?

Give me a break ! US and Europe have a huge responsabilitty because they took part in that conflict too and since that conflict, they have had money for Afghanistan (10 years !), Lybia, Côte d’Ivoire but could care less about giving 0.00001 % of their yearly budget for refugees who are the victims of their investment in a war that ended 16 years ago !!!

  99. Katherine says:

Canuck, not sure what government you have lobbied but as someone who has lobbied the US Congress on international humanitarian aid I find nothing unusual about getting an earmark for a sum as small as $500,000 into a bill. That can be done very quickly if the will is there.

Of course, we have no idea what promises and/or assurances were made between governments ahead of the actual delivery of aid/funds.

The articles I’ve read mention that the government has been trying for years to resolve permanent housing for these residents. It seems all it took was money so perhaps the location and even plans were there all along and since the building is government owned I’m sure that bureaucratic red tape was minimal. In an area hungry for work it is entirely conceivable that a building of this minimal size could have been financed and built in 18 months. I also imagine that there was a rush to get this finished before winter descends.

Perhaps before people reveal their claws and their mean spirited smears they should find the ammo before they shoot. Some posters are just too predictable.

And why in the world should Angelina or Brad pay for this if this is the responsibility of governments? That’s like those who foolishly think that Make It Right homeowners should not have sought insurance money or government grants to add to the mix in rebuilding their homes.

Maybe everyone has been too diplomatic to say so but it looks to me like Angelina also shamed the Bosnian government into taking care of business for these long neglected citizens.

  100. bettyrose says:

@ Eve – girlfriend, you need to chill. This site is for having fun. Yes, I naturally have a cynical tone, but you’ll be hard pressed to find anything negative I’ve ever said about AJ. I have no issue with her, but I’m surrounded by generous, socially active people in real life, so while I respect AJ’s work, I’m never going to meet her in person, and I’m more interested in her hair.

  101. Katherine says:

    Just two added thoughts.

I am amazed that there are those who are unaware of the US role in the Bosnian war. Without judging it I can still say unequivocally that the US bears some responsibility for the plight of these women. To ignore that responsibility is not what the US is about or should be about. The US, the individual states as well as many private charities offer numerous programs to help people find housing and help pay for it. Veterans in the US have very good benefits for housing, health care (including substance abuse treatment), education and employment.

This notion that Angelina’s interest in charitable endeavors is something new for her or a remake in her image is misinformed. Angelina was raised very Catholic in the tradition of the Catholic philosophy of doing for others. I’d say that Angelina’s interest in and dedication to charity and helping those in need began at a very early age and has grown as her ability and resources have grown. One tends to forget or may be unaware that at a younger age Angelina and her mother were doing this on a smaller scale for Native Americans through their foundation. In any event, Angelina never had an “image” of a selfish, ungiving person like many in the industry do that needed a remake.

  102. Sisi says:

    @ Julia

    Agreed.

I’m from the Netherlands, and if there’s something I’m getting from this article it’s embarrassment, because the USA paid the bill.

  103. Runs with Scissors says:

Hi Eve and Horse Poor Hanna** just popping in to say hey if you’re here!

    Katherine, you rock, thank you.

  104. googlyeyes says:

So Angelina helps secure apartments for refugees in Bosnia, while Jen buys herself numerous apartments in NYC? hrrmmm…team Angelina all the way. YES I STILL CARE.

AND that photo is absolutely beautiful.

  105. Linnie says:

    @Wow. What are you, stupid?

  106. Cheyenne says:

Canuck: it’s not so coincidentally finished shortly before her film on Bosnia comes out.
    ==============================================

Bless your bitter little heart, you just had to find a negative spin to put on it, didn’t you?

  107. the original bellaluna says:

I will forever remember a conversation I had with one of my former residents (property management) when he explained to me that he was Serbian and his wife was Croatian, and it was like “you and your (ex) husband.” (My eldest are of mixed ethnicity.)

He and his wife had to flee for their lives after they endured and managed to survive multiple bombings. With their children.

Don’t care what you think of AJ, but God love her (and everyone else involved) for providing a safe haven for these women.

  108. Emma says:

@Wow, #89 … “I like her efforts to draw attention BUT
she could have come up with that money herself. … It’s one thing to draw attention to all those places, and donate of her own fortune, and its totally another thing to take money of the American tax-payer and have it spent instead of doing your own donation.”
    ______________________

Are you saying that you ‘really’ can’t see the difference between a country receiving a donation from a private non-citizen (which can then be spent anyway the ‘receiving’ country chooses) and receiving a donation from another Country via an International agreement that’s earmarked for a specific purpose? Really?

  109. Diane says:

In a world of the Lohans and Kardashians, I find it refreshing to read stories like this. Say what you will about home wrecker, I admire both her and Brad. They don’t have to do squat and yet they do. Bravo.

  110. Cher says:

Good for this old women to finally have a proper roof on their heads! Its so sad for them not to have one for so many years! At least they get to spend their remaining days in some kind of comfort. God Bless you Angie!

  111. Runs with Scissors** Hey girl, been missin ya’,too!

  112. sharylmj says:

Good Job Angelina!! using your celebrity and huge heart to help those who can’t help themselves!! She must really have follow through and really means it when she says she is going to do all she can to help.

  113. Jess says:

You Angelina haters can hate all you want but you can’t deny that she has empathy; which is very rare nowadays, especially in Hollywood where almost everyone is a narcissist. More power to her and keep the donations coming! A little something will definitely put a smile on someone who has lost pretty much everything.

  114. v adams says:

Love her or hate her, at least there was something done for these senior citizens. I am glad that Ms. Jolie has been vocal and engaging people to discuss these topics. It’s a lot more then her other female actresses. Everyone though she was the weird girl and look at her now, she Mia Farrow 2.0

  115. bite me says:

so happy for these elderly refugees. La Jolie is just trying to make a bit of difference .

  116. Canuck says:

@Cheyenne106: that’s not really negative, as much as those of you who are spoiling for a fight might wish it were. Frankly, and as I said above, the people who now have a roof over their heads don’t care where the money comes from. I’m sure they don’t give a rat’s butt if AJ is using them for publicity, the end result for them is the same.

  117. Koa M. says:

    FAKE. FRAUD. PHONY.

  118. CHRISTIAN_GIRL says:

There were reports/updates all along the way. From Brad donating I think a tractor, to the discovered landmines being cleared.

Their government had been asking for 15+ years for help from everybody, and people came thru with promises only to NOT do anything. When AJ went, 6 months later the US promised the funds and gave a completion date (18 months) as evidenced. The JP’S help build in the US with government funds too (see New Jersey) for our vets and that’s a 56 unit apartment building.

No word had even come out about her movie. No one knew, so no angle there. December 23 opening day is a long way from this story helping. So ITLOBAH won’t reap this benefit.

The beneficiaries are the people who now have a proper place to live. It is owned by their municipalities so the proper channels had to be made. Government to government. Land is NOT owned by AJ.

A good deed is just that a good deed. AJ does plenty of them for many years in many parts of the world. She is the real deal folks and the Villa should be named after her. At the ceremony they had the American flag on display. They recognized where this came from, but AJ jumpstarted it and they are grateful. They were living in a bombed/abandoned school. No other buildings have been built since the war. No honest complaint can be made. Dishonest ones, of course happens all the time. Yet AJ still forges ahead to even greater things.

  119. miss_bhaven says:

lol @ the sister on the right..loving her “im so over this shit” look.

  120. blonde on the dock says:

It’s nice to know these ederly people have a roof over their head…..finally. Good on AJ!

  121. Kim says:

We need more celebrity stories like his and we need to start banning vapid star sucking wanna be celebs like the Kartrashians who do nothing but buy new Ferraris with their money.

So happy for these refugees. Good job Brangelina!
