These are new photos of Michelle Williams at last night’s premiere/screening of My Week With Marilyn at the AFI Fest. The dress is Oscar de la Renta and… I don’t like it much. Yes, this particular shade of gold works well on pale blondes, and it suits her figure and everything. But… I find this look super-boring on Michelle. I know that’s “on” me, because I’m not in love with Michelle as a person or as an actress. I feel like this dress is too “cloying” and “young” and “precious” on her, which is how I feel about her personality too. This feels like a very young woman’s party dress – like, this is something a rich girl would wear for her 16th birthday party. It’s strange on a 31-year-old hipster with a weird affected accent.
I kind of hate Michelle’s chopped hair too. The resemblance is so strong with Mia Farrow, it bugs. In her recent Elle UK cover profile (I covered some of the photos here), Michelle explained her rationale for keeping the chopped hair:
“What Matilda would love is for her mom to grow out the cropped hair, though that’s unlikely to happen any time soon. The only people who like it are gay men and my girlfriends. Straight men across the board are not into this hair! I cut it for the one straight man who has ever liked short hair and I wear it in memorial of somebody who really loved it. I’ve really grown into it. I feel like myself with short hair.”

So we can’t dislike her short Bieber hair because she wears it this way for Heath Ledger, I guess. And she’s going to keep wearing it this way as a “memorial” to him. Sigh…I know that moved a lot of people, so I’ll try to be careful here. Let me just say it this way… I hope My Week With Marilyn is really poorly reviewed. I hope no one considers Michelle for any awards this year. I hope she doesn’t have to give many more interviews.

I like the short hair on Michelle regardless of how odd I find her reason fo it….I mean, come on MIchelle- it’s time to move on. She has really small, delicate features and sometimes long hair just overpowers those faces- kind of like Halle Berry, who looks terrible in long hair.

I love her hair and I think she is beautiful. I love the dress from the waist up- but not the skirt because it’s so stiff that it looks like she’s wearing a lampshade. The shoes are to-die for.

i like this look and she rocks the haircut, it’s very soft and feminine despite the lack of length. some people look bad with short hair (i.e. evan rachel wood) but michelle looks classy and fab. but then again, i like her a lot so maybe i’m biased.

LOL, I love her hair I think she wears the gamine really well and it doesn’t remind me at all of Bieber’s (his is longer isn’t it?) She looks great.

I didn’t particularly like her in “Blue Valentine.” However, I love her hair; I’ve worn mine like this since the mid 90s and it’s very liberating and has given me much more self-confidence.

I hope the opposite. I think she’s a wonderful actress whose personality induces the irk and ire of some people on which I have theories why. I like how she’s going with Marilyn because she wasn’t just a bombshell and I bet she’ll show nuances and complexities to the character that would give more depth to Marilyn. Often I only see in movies one moment she’s bombshell the next she’s depressed and nothing in between. Michelle could change that.

I think she looks completely stunning. I like her hair, especially when she keeps the bangs shorter. Very few women can pull off this hair cut. The dress is gorgeous too. The material,fit,structure, everything is perfect.

I adore the dress but do think the color is a little too matchy matchy with her hair, which mutes the overall effect. Lighter blond or more makeup contrast would help.

If anyone can pull this look off, it’s Michelle. Both the hair and dress style look very good on her body shape/style. The gold color flatters her blonde hair. I LOVE the shoes! I think she looks great here, but then again, I think she usually does look great. I like her casual style too.

The “reason” for the short hair seems to be a big, fat lie.
It sounds too much of a PR advice that was carefully guarded to be exposed at the right time for movie promotion and Oscar campaign

I like Michelle but I can see when she dresses badly or gives bad interview.
This dress is boring, it flatters her figure, but kind of washes her off. I don’t like the chopped hair too but hey, if that’s what she wants so be it.
On the other hand her make up is fabulous!

I don’t get the hate for this hair. Mia Farrow is not the only woman in history to have short blonde hair.
Personally I’m glad there are more and more actresses who are not doing the “unrealistic extensions with big shiny Hollywood curls” thing. Variety = Good.

She still manages to look soft and feminine even with a drastically short haircut…she can pull it off when most women can’t…it suits her. So I give her credit for having the guts, and not caving to the pressures about looks that fame imposes on people. The dress is nice, but a little too simple and the color doesn’t flatter enough.

while she doesn’t look horrible with the short hair, I still don’t think she looks super fab. It kind of makes the rounder features on her face and her jawline stand out more. So the effect can be chipmunkish. And as for the reason, it seems less endearing and more attention grabbing. She never really had short hair when she was with Heath, did she? And, like someone else mentioned, they weren’t together when he died. While it’s obvious he meant a great deal to her, Michelle seems to act like they broke up 5 minutes before his death.
Plus the “memorial through your hair” seems a little shallow. Aren’t there better ways to memorialize someone?

I think she looks fantastic. When I saw the thumbnail on the home page I thought ‘Well, unless the dress is absolutely hideous I don’t see how she could look bad.’ I think her hair and makeup are perfect and the short hair really dies suit her face. The bottom of the dress is the only part that could be considered questionable, but with a plain A-line she would look boring. Love it. Although I am getting a bit tired of all the weird references to Heath lately. It makes it seem like she can’t move on, which isn’t good for her or her daughter.

I think she looks really good here when I look at it objectively. When I look at her throught the prism of her “precious” personality, she grates as usual.

Actually I really like this ensemble, everything works very well together, even the hair.
Having said that I dislike short hair on most people and Michelle is no exception. I hope she grows it out one day. No, in fact I don’t really care either way, I’m not that fond of her, I just hope we never get to see her everywhere, she has an “I’m more edgy than you are” side to her that annoys me.

Michelle is growing on me. And my favorite haircute is the pixie cut. Wish I could do it. You have to be able to wear it well and with confidence. I keep wanting to do it but then I realize that you also have to be willing to fix it to look nice and wear the right clothing and makeup and too many women in their late 30′s and 40′s and onwards just chop their hair off but it doesn’t have the same look and I know how lazy I am so I would just end up looking like the mass of unattractive women out there instead of chic like Michelle and Hale the Crazy.

I rarely like what Michelle wears but I like this with her hair very much. She seems to know herself and her style (which is streamlined) and beautiful. I do wish she would wear some earrings or some jewelry occasionally. Diamond studs or drops would have been gorgeous with this.

Wait if she missed Heath so much why wasn’t she back to being his girlfriend before his death. The guy was lonely with issues, I bet he would have appreciated her attention while he was alive instead of her name-dropping him in death to win an award. I agree with the person that says this dress looks straight out of Taylor Swift’s closet. It would look good on Taylor not so much on Michelle.
