Jeremy Renner covers Details, talks about his dog, girls & being lonely

Oh, YES. Jeremy Renner covers the December/January issue of Details Magazine, all to talk about the slew of films he has coming out in the coming months. There’s Misson Impossible: Ghost Protocol, The Avengers, and Renner got the coveted Jason Bourne role after Matt Damon left the project. Now… I’m hot for Renner. I think he’s an amazing actor and a compact, sexy little dude. I get that not everyone feels the same way, although those of you not down with the Renner should just prepare yourselves for the Renner explosion coming in the next year. It’s going to be a whole lotta Renner, and I can’t wait. Anyway, you can read the full Details Mag piece here, and I’ve included some highlights. I like Renner’s interviews, by the way. He’s not full of himself, and his success came later in life and he wears his fame with an easy grace.

He loves his dog: He’s religiously unsentimental (“I don’t give a s–t about the past”) and unabashedly devoted to his cream-colored miniature French bulldog, Franklin.

How The Hurt Locker changed his life: “I feel blessed to be working these past 20 years in this business,” Renner says. “But when The Hurt Locker came around, it became another thing. And all it was is opportunity. I’ve been waiting for a role like that for a long time. I wasn’t getting any sign that said, ‘This is gonna turn out amazing for you,'” he says. “I wasn’t super-happy being so poor. Eating on $10 a month—probably not very good for you. But I loved what I was doing. Not every actor gives their life to do this job. Some just do it as a job. Well, it’s my life.”

His side-business renovating houses: “Me and my brother… would tinker around, and then someone would pay us twice what we put into it. So when I walked into an audition, I could just think about: ‘Can I contribute to this movie? If not, f–k it, I’ll go build a house.’ Building a house is like producing a movie. There’s no right way to do it but a lot of wrong ways. You have to be flexible and creative. You have to move fast, be prepared—or it quickly becomes costly. These sound like life lessons. It’s certainly affected how I approach my life.”

Big-budget action films and a diss at Transformers: Armchair casting directors are eager to place him in future Mission: Impossible films, hoping that his character, Brandt, rises from Cruise sidekick to inherit the franchise. Renner’s not so sure. “Other people can think ahead all they want,” he says. “I just focus on the task at hand and try to move on.” Despite the physical fun (and hefty paydays) that comes with big action series, he wants to keep doing the smaller, more personal films he’s always enjoyed. “I’m blessed to have cool roles in these big movies. Because nothing against Transformers, but thank God I don’t have to do a monologue to a robot. I don’t know how Shia, God bless him, does that.”

He’s friends with Charlize Theron & Colin Farrell: “I had to ask Charlize Theron, a very good friend, about going through an Academy Award campaign. She told me to take it moment by moment. Don’t f–king freak out, just have fun.” From his pal Colin Farrell, he learned to look everyone in the eye, treat everyone as an equal, and try not to let the whole nuttiness overwhelm him. “Colin had an interesting trajectory,” he says. “Not too dissimilar to what’s been happening to me, but he was much younger. He had five movies come out in one year. He exploded, then sort of imploded. One night I was talking with him—mind you, with some drinks in us—and he said, ‘I look at it this way: I could f–king always go back to Ireland and drink my f–king Guinness anytime.’ I hold on to that.”

Work is vacation: “This is the vacation. Work is trying to get a damned job. I skip to set every day.”

Tom Cruise on Renner: “Here he is, he’s a musician, he’s interested in design, he’s got a curiosity about life, and he’s just, in every way, an incredible dramatic actor.” For good measure, Cruise adds, Renner is “dynamic and an amazing athlete and very graceful with his action… A funny thing happened when we were shooting in Dubai,” Cruise says. He discovered that Renner has a little jig he does when he gets nervous, a spazzy little dance to loosen himself up. “I can’t even describe the Renner Stretch. He’s got a copyright on the Renner Stretch. I laughed so hard when he did it for me. I said this has gotta go in this movie. I said you gotta show [director Brad] Bird. You gotta show Bird! It’s gotta go in right before this tunnel sequence we do. So it’s in the movie. I don’t think I could do the Renner Stretch justice, but he’s an actor who’s not afraid to do that and go there.”

On dating: “I never dated, because I couldn’t afford to date. I didn’t even have electricity. You try to put a positive spin on it, like, ‘Hey, this is so sexy—look at all these candles!’ But I loved what I was doing. The sacrifices I made in personal relationships had the biggest effect on my life. Even now, any woman would take a No. 2 seat to my job.” His longest relationship lasted five and a half years. That was in his twenties. Marriage was off the table because he couldn’t see himself as a solid provider. Or, as he puts it, “‘What the hell are you doing next week, motherf–ker, let alone 40 years from now? And are you willing to wipe my ass when we get old?’

He’s not seeing anyone now: “There’ve been a handful of girls over the last years. But it’s been very difficult. How does it go any further? I have a wonderful life, but it means nothing if it cannot be shared. That’s all I’m missing right now. It’s a little unbalanced for me. Right now the only thing consistent in my life is that little dog. That’s why I got it. I was getting really lonely. I needed somebody or something to be there with me through the whole journey.”

And yes, when asked directly about the gay rumors, Renner denies it, saying he doesn’t “pay attention to that horses–t.” At first I thought his comments on his lack of a dating life were oddly pronoun-free, but then he started talking about girls. I don’t know… at this point, I do buy that he’s straight. That’s mostly wishful thinking, though, because I love him so much.

He’s gay but damnit I love him anyway!!

  2. RobN says:

Has there ever been a straight guy who has a french bulldog? Ever?

    • Sisi says:

      uhhhh… lemme think

      Doesn’t Brad Pitt have one?
      Or was it David Beckham…

      • RobN says:

What do Pitt and Beckham have in common? A pile of kids who wanted a dog. It’s a bit different than a single guy. Any single guys with a french bulldog who aren’t gay?

Personally, I don’t care either way but I get tired of the act.

      • Gigi says:

Brad and the kids have a big solid English bulldog. I know manly men with froufrou dogs but that’s usually because they have families or kids. A single man with a French bulldog is a wee bit unusual. Just sayin’.

    • Amy says:

Patton Oswalt has a French bulldog, and I’m pretty sure he’s straight. Aaannd…that’s the only one I can name.

  3. Dudette says:

I remember when he was in an episode of Angela, – ‘Somnambulist’ I believe it was. He stole the show even then. Can’t wait to see him in The Bourne Legacy.

  4. Khalesi says:

Fixing houses, eh? I’m pretty sure I recall that he and his male partner recently sold a remodeled house in the hollywood hills (~1 yr ago)…

  5. felicia says:

Oh, I have loved this man ever since he guest starred on “Angel” all those years ago. I am so happy to see him gaining all this success now.

  6. Shavi says:

He’s not gay, but a bit of a slut y’all! Here’s a pic of him caught with his hand between a girl’s thighs on a date a few weeks ago (on the right). I’m sure he wasn’t happy about this pic and it looks like he didn’t know it was being taken. Check-out the other frontal pics in the gallery to confirm it’s him. Guy’s straight just private ’cause he’s a dog. http://guestofaguest.com/galleries/2011/11/stk-5th-anniversary-party/586322/

  7. Nev says:

why does everyone think he’s gay though?

    • cr says:

Because there are people who think everyone in HW is gay.

    • Shy says:

Well… EVERYONE said for years that Ricky Martin was gay. I didn’t believe it at first. Many-many people didn’t believe it. And then boom – he comes out.

Everyone for years said that Zachary Quinto was gay and then boom – he comes out. So I kind of believe now all those rumors that Hayden Christensen or Jeremy Renner or Tom Cruise or John Travolta are gays.

      • mainstream says:

What difference does it make if he’s gay or straight? Either way you peeps have got no chance of sleeping with him.

  8. kieslowski says:

I really love him as an actor, and it sucks that he has to lie about his personal life. But I guess with these huge franchises there is no way they will let him come out.

  9. ShanKat says:

He’s really delicious. Literally, a tasty piece.

  10. apple says:

I have to believe he is straight only becuase he seems like he has integrity and after all the teen bullying suicides. I would hope he like Zach Quinto had to be true to who they are.

That or his PR person put a gun to his head and made him say this to sell those big action movies coming out this year.

  11. Lindsey says:

Serious question, why do you guys all think he’s gay?

    • Tele5 says:

Because he was openly gay til Hurt Locker and the Oscar nomination and bought a house with his boyfriend. His PR freaked out, because how can he be an A list action star and award nominated actor if he’s gay. The male audiance would rip him apart. No actor with a macho image will come out of the closet.

He is backtracking just as Tom Hardy’s team let him say he was misunderstood when he admitted years ago in an interview that he slept with men.

No one in Hollywood is above bearding and this industry draws primarly gay or bi men. The straight ones are really really rare.

      • Shavi says:

Sorry but I call BS on this. Before the Hurt Locker he was openly living with his then girlfriend actress Jes Macallan (2008-2009) and there’s lots of pics of them walking red carpets like the Spirit Awards in 2009 and accounts of them together legit at events by people. He had no reason to have a beard back then he was nobody. Now that he’s single and just dating he obviously keeps his private life quiet ’cause he doesn’t want to read about it every week in the tabloids. But he’s a Colin Farrell-esque dog and if you’re an attractive girl living in LA or NY (where he’s been filming lately) chances are you’ve been hit on by him (or even gone home with him) with his cheezy pick-up lines at the gym or when he’s drunk at a bar. He’s damn open with his preference for the girls where he lives and hangs-out.. And yah my friends and I run in the same gym and bar circles and have seen and experienced it.. Don’t care if you believe this, whatever, but making broad statements that he was openly gay before the HL when there’s so much actual evidence he isn’t/wasn’t just annoys me..

      • Kimbob says:

@Tele5, thanks so much for describing the “gay actor thing” so well in H-wood! Maybe other bloggers won’t believe this, but I certainly do. I remember reading a biography about a certain famous actor in H-wood (for the life of me I cannot recall the author’s name, but if I come across it in the future, I’ll certainly blog it here & cite the author, book, and page #).

I know, I know…..some people just refuse to believe this, but this is just a plain fact in H-wood. It is just well-known (in H-wood) that the arts/acting trade is comprised mostly, but NOT ENTIRELY, of course, of gays/lesbians. That’s the reality. They are just more artistic, & do not have to be inhibited/overwhelmed by a “traditional marriage,” as described by Renner, that would definitely have its’ drawbacks regarding being the main provider/breadwinner for the usual by-products of such (children) that need a steady, dependable income.

YES, I’m a HOPELESS ROMANTIC! Yes, I’d REALLY LOVE to believe all my fave, blessed-by-the-God above w/perfect looks and yet “sensitive” on-screen presence actors are all “straight-up heterosexual” dudes, but SADLY SO, it’s just not true. Also…the realist in me kicks in (dousing myself w/cold, cold water..LOL) & begs me to reason…tis just not true…most are gay…oh well! I’ve gotten over it…LOL!

As much as I’d LOVE to think George Clooney is straight-up hetero, again, the realist kicks in & I look AT THE FACTS: Contract relationships w/definite expiration dates…no children…one “marriage” long ago (where he probably REALLY TRIED to be hetero)and I come to the same conclusion.

I know I may catch hell for stating my fervent beliefs on such, but I have to look at facts, which usually point to a more realistic view, despite my omnipresent romantic notions/fantasies which stubbornly refuse to go away. I always say to myself…it’s still nice to have them, though.

      • normades says:

I had heard this too. Like several people from his past said so, though maybe they got it wrong. At any rate he listens to show tunes, so yeah, that sets off my gaydar big time!!

And no, it doesn’t matter. But this is a big part of celeb gossip, like it or not.

      • Sue says:

I know several actors in Hollywood and none of them are gay. Really generalizing when you say all men are gay in Hollywood. Don’t believe everything you read.

  12. Naya says:

Gay or straight good for him for trying to keep his private life private. He is a wonderful actor, has integrity, good solid head on his shoulders, and extremely handsome.

  13. Happy21 says:

Just because we don’t visibly see him with women doesn’t mean he is gay!

Oh wow, he had a business partner…so did Justin Timberlake for his restaurant and clothing line – does that make him gay (lol, not a fan but using JT as an example)? NO!

I think that maybe he is just enjoying his success and isn’t letting dating or a serious relationship get in his way.

    He’s hot and I don’t for a second think he’s gay 🙂

  14. Messenger says:

Jeremy is not gay. It might be hard for some to fathom but some people do not need a “body” beside them to, for example, campaign for an oscar or to prove how stud muffinly they are. Some men have strength and they can go it alone until the right person shows up. I saw him on his short-lived tv show The Unusuals and really was starting to like him and the show when of course it was cancelled. Just because he is not hollywood stereotypical doesnt make him gay. I like him and I am never attracted to gay men. What would be the point?

    • Messenger says:

and please people for pity’s sake, let us have the decency to respect those who are gay and wish to have it remain a private matter. outing someone who is gay is just as harmful and vicious and outing someone who isn’t. mind your own business!!

    • Hollowdoll says:

I always love when people say I am not attracted to gay men. Considering how many people you see on the street etc. who I am sure you are randomly attracted to. There is no way for you to know if they are gay or not. It’s like saying I’m not attracted to married men. What’s the point? The point is it’s okay to look but not touch. Beautiful is beautiful no matter whether the person is gay, lesbian transexual etc etc etc.
If you saw two paintings of the same building would you be able to tell which one was painted by a gay man?

      • Messenger says:

I did not say I don’t admire beauty. I admire beauty in all its forms. It is in the way someone looks at you. With interest or without. and to answer your question: yes I would 🙂

  15. Ari says:

He totally does not hit my gaydar whatsoever. I think he might be the more fem nature though when he is in a relationship though although he is rugged looking. I mean fem as more like softer, more open to talk – things like that. He probably needs a strong woman. (WAVES HAND)

  16. The Original Mia says:

He doesn’t ping my gaydar. I totally get not dating because you’re too poor & your circumstances probably won’t appeal to others. He seems happy and grounded and sexy as hell.

  17. Jenn says:

Gay or not, his business. So this guy is gay because he does not have a girlfriend, has s french bulldog and a male “business partner” he seems to think is his brother and according to some, Clooney and DiCaprio are gay because they date too many women and have male posse’s. Don’t get how these judgements are made.

    • Happy21 says:

I’m not too sure how being a serial dater and/or not letting a sperm or two escape the condom while having sex with said dates so as to not create a child out of nothing more than a casual girlfriend/boyfriend relationship makes a man gay.

  18. Sarah says:

Not that it matters, but he isn’t gay. I met him at SXSW back in 2009 (before HL fame) and he was hitting on every attractive woman in sight and hooking up. There was no reason for him to pretend to be straight back then and there still isn’t. He was actually kind of sleazy. Super fun to hang out with, though.

  19. layla says:

There are many shades of sexuality between straight and gay. More importantly, what does it matter?

    • Kimbob says:

@layla…you are certainly correct on that one! I’m also thinking/wondering “try-sexual,” as in, you know…he’ll try ANYTHING and probably like it! Nothing wrong w/that!

Anyway, I guess we’ll have to agree to disagree, because I’m just so curious about one’s who ping my radar…and do want to know! But I certainly respect your opinions, though!

  20. Kimbob says:

I’ve read other comments since replying to @Tele5 & feel compelled to speak a bit more on this topic.

I’m really secretly rooting for Renner to be a dog JUST LIKE Colin Farrell! Oh, the hopeless romantic in me SO VERY MUCH WANTS THIS TO BE TRUE! I’m NOT digging my heels in on this one, either. I feel that since his star is shooting straight toward the sun right now, that we all MAY VERY WELL get to the bottom of this conundrum! I can still have my dreams…and oh so very much want Renner to be a very lonely dog that I could comfort..at least for one blissful night! If I find this to be true, then I’m going on Expedia.com to book my one-way ticket to H-wood. I’ll book the return trip after my sexcapade w/him. Good God Almighty this man is F-ing GORGEOUS. He just DOES IT for me. Ditto Colin Farrell…yes, there’s a VERY SOFT SPOT in my heart for these down n’ dirty dogs…LMFAO!!!

As for the “privacy” matter. YES, I’m all excited to possibly discover that my boy Renner is NOT A FAMEWHORE, NOT AN EGOCENTRIC MANIAC, & not only does he have a tender, sensitive artistic slant, he’s A REALIST, as well! I just LOVE/LOVE/LOVE a well-grounded man that can soar w/the eagles every now & then!

That being said…one certainly cannot realistically expect (although they may try IN VAIN) to be a top-earning actor in H-wood, sashay the red carpets, give soul-baring interviews to such high profile mags such as “Details,” and HONESTLY EXPECT that the public at large is going to be satiated by such.

This is the downside to such a career. You have to deal w/NUTJOBS that stalk you, NUTJOBS that are self-deluded into thinking you are their soulmate…but one small detail…they also dream of killing you, endless fan mail (I think, a PLUS).

People are curious by nature! We are going to want to know MORE…thus the evolution of such sites as Celebitchy…we want to know more of the one’s that ping our radar. It is certainly REFRESHING to know that Renner is a more evolved person & that he has more interests in life than HIMSELF! But to really expect that reporters/media to NOT go digging…oh COME ON, now! This just goes w/the territory….and Renner and most of the other H-wood elite know this comes w/the territory. There are a few exceptions…such as the deluded Sean Penn..that expects to have all that & to be able to walk down the street w/out being “bothered.” And to that I say…give me an F-ing BREAK. Personal privacy is one of the “givens,” (a price to pay) and it comes w/the territory.

  21. ol cranky says:

he doesn’t ping my gaydar at all but he does ping another part of me (especially when I think of that tasty little butt shot of him in 12 and holding)

  22. Amy says:

He ooks me out because he was so damn good in that Dahmer movie. That’s all I see when I look at him now. Jeffrey Dahmer.

    • Trek Girl says:

Me too! Every time I look at him I think of “Dahmer” as well as an episode of CSI that he was in where he killed a man and had his brother take the fall. He was great in both roles.

    • JamTam says:

Me too!!! Looks like I’m not the only one.

  23. nikzilla37 says:

I think he’s gay and he’s keeping it under wraps since he’s mister action star now.

  24. Silk Spectre says:

4FS! Can we please be done with the gay rumours on EVERY male celeb!? Yes, there must be some in Hollywood. But just because he keeps his stuff privat doesn’t mean he has to be gay.

  25. Krill says:

Really? Having a French bulldog makes a man gay? I wonder how that happens exactly…

  26. Saphira says:

Oh lord, when I first read the headline I could have sworn it said: “talks about his dong”. Wow, my mind is really smutty today!

  27. Sassy says:

Don’t buy that he’s gay (don’t care if he is or not). He’s HOT. Yum.

  28. MayaMae says:

French Bulldogs may be small in size but they are badasses. They will charge a door and ram it with their shoulder. They’re like pitbulls in a tiny body.

  29. homer says:

I went to high school with him. I assure you he isn’t gay.

  30. erin says:

why are people convinced he’s gay? i really don’t get it

  31. Incredulous says:

Can we start a rumour that Rupert Everett is straight? Just to see what happens?

    Please please?

  32. Ruffian9 says:

Love him…he’s my pretend Hollywood boyfriend.

  33. nope says:

shavi…wow…I would love to know more about the cheezy lines he pulls at the gym and when he is drunk!!! Did one of your friends hook up with him?! Do tell please!! I at least want to know!

  34. dj says:

    He is dirty hot!

  35. Addie says:

Why is every non attached/single man in Hollywood considered gay?

Single women in Hollywood are labled “still serching” but Hollywood single men are considered gay? Why?

    • dahlia1947 says:

I think it’s stupid. i never read these comments about female celebs: “She lives alone with her dog? Oh then she’s gay. Her and her man live in seperate apts.? Then she’s gay.” It’s really dumb, actually.

  36. Betty says:

When I read the title “Jeremy Renner covers Details, talks about his dog …” – I just read, he talks about his DONG – oh dear, what does it say about me? It could be still more exciting than talking about his DOG. –

  37. dahlia1947 says:

First time i saw him was in The Town. He’s very intense. He was really good in that movie. I like him.

  38. Nan says:

I’ve been following this guys careers every since his Kodak and Taco Bell commercials – local boy makes good.

I’ve watched just about every movie he was in simply b/c he was in it. I watched The Hurt Locker because of him. I suffered through SWAT because of him. I watched the reality show that he did about trying to make it in hollywood. He’s an interesting dude. What people like is his honesty in his characters.

I’ll probably even watch Mission Impossible and the Avengers b/c of him. I wish he’d do more drama though…I miss his more dramatic roles (loved him in The Town).

  39. Tyra says:

Sorry but there is nothing about a Frenchie that is foofoo, they are some solid, tuff little dogs. And one more thing why is that every hot single guy in Hollywood is gay at least that’s what everyone seems to think. Renner is NOT GAY is a very manly guy. Hottest guy in Hollywood in my opinion!!!
