Christina Aguilera “loves her curves,” and thinks she’s a positive Latina role model

We didn’t have photos of Christina Aguilera at the American Music Awards yesterday, because Christina didn’t pose on the red carpet or anything. She was probably getting hammered in her dressing room. Anyway, the big moment for Christina was when she came out to sing “Moves Like Jagger” with Maroon 5, and everybody was slightly taken aback by Christina’s figure, clad in a shiny white Herve Leger bandage dress. I’ve screen capped it a little bit, but you should totally watch the video – everything past 2:10 has Christina:

Like, her boobs are hanging out so much that I’m pretty sure we’re seeing some areola. And I guess Christina didn’t feel like wearing Spanx? My guess is that she was probably out there, commando, showing her makeup-stained biscuits to the front row.

Anyway, we’ve been talking about Christina’s weight gain (“booze bloat”) for a while now. I’m not yelling at Christina because she dared to gain some weight, but I will yell at her for looking like she’s spent most of this year drowning her sorrows in Scotch and orange foundation. And I’ll yell at her for wearing the wrong kinds of clothes to go with her new, fuller figure. But none of that matters because Christina thinks she looks great:

Christina Aguilera isn’t model thin and she doesn’t care!

The 30-year-old superstar performed at the American Music Awards Sunday night and RadarOnline.com has photos of her in a skin tight sparkling Herve Leger dress.

Critics have slammed the singer’s robust figure, even saying she looked pregnant, but she doesn’t let that bother her.

“Christina loves her curves,” a friend close to the singer exclusively told RadarOnline.com. “She is not pregnant! She’s a Latina woman with curves and since when is it not ok to have curves?”

Recently photographed looking like she’s put on a few pounds, Christina has told her friends that she is “proud” of her body.

“She feels like she is setting an example for women and young girls, especially Latinas. She’s very proud of her curves. Christina thinks she is a good role model – not everyone is super skinny and she wants girls to embrace their body type.”

Christina told her friends that she will continue wearing revealing dresses.

“It’s not what you look like in a dress, it is how you feel and it is about owning your dress. If you want to wear a tight dress then own it. She says you need to be happy in your own skin the way she is happy in hers.”

[From Radar]

It’s somewhat clever to use her weight gain/booze bloat as some kind of feminist, pro-curves rallying cry. I’m also enjoying the implicit “SHE MEANT TO DO THAT” argument, although I don’t buy it for a second. Christina is getting older, her metabolism is slowing down, and she can’t drink like she used to without all of those empty liquor calories piling on. And she would go on a diet, but she’s just too drunk. This Radar story was the equivalent of Christina slurring out, “Doncha think imma sessy?” before passing out in her martini.

latina? she seems as white bread as they come.

    • SkyNet says:

She’s half Ecuadorian. We don’t all look the same you know. Latina’s come in a variety of sizes, shapes, and colors. Maybe for a white person she’s fat, but for a Latina, she’s pretty normal.

      • Sonia says:

I agree that she is Latina and that Latina’s are not homogeneous. Everyone in Latin America is from somewhere else unless they are native americans and then they mixed in various combinations. Some people then immigrate to the US. Her Dad is Ecuadorian (of a european/mix background) and married her American mum.

What I disagree with is her implication that all Latinas are “curvy” or “fat,” we all come in different shapes and sizes too.

When Latinas talk about curves it’s that in Latin American countries they don’t push this agenda to be super skinny all the time. However, that doesn’t mean that culturally they want you to be fat in any way. The goal is actually shapely or hourglass like but not on the heavy or skinny side.

So I think that’s why you get the J.Los and Sofia Vergaras and their body types and why they make these statement about being “curvy.”

Christina is just at an unhealthy weight and decides to use the idea of a “curvy latina” when she doesn’t really have a clue what that really means or ever showed any pride in her background.

So, I disagree with the statement but “for a Latina, she’s pretty normal”
It isn’t. She would be called fat by women in her family and the men in her community.

This is coming from a Hispanic women who knows!

      • Girl says:

This! Latinos are every color of the rainbow. I don’t remember who originally said it but to paraphrase, we are as light as Cristina Saralegui (sp? The Latina Oprah) and we are as dark as Sammy Sosa. Sorry. I’m a light skinned Latina and this issue really sticks with me. As if we all look the same.

      • Original Bee says:

I remember an interview with Rita Moreno where she discussed how upset she was that the makers of West Side Story made all of the Latino actors wear dark makeup. She tried to explain to them that Latinos come in all colors, but apparently TPTB didn’t care. Latino = dark brown to them. No discussion. I felt so bad for her and the other actors after watching that interview. Imagine having a bunch of executives tell you how your race is supposed to look.

      • jc126 says:

I agree with those who say that being Latina = “curvy” (also agree with those who say that term is overused). Being curvy is not a defining characteristic of Latinas or of any other race. Nor is “having no ass” or some other such obnoxious body stereotype characteristic of Caucasians (another peeve of mine).
All shapes and sizes found all over the world.

    • Veronica says:

Wow. Ignorance. We don’t all look alike! Yes, she’s Latina! I’m Puerto Rican and have natural blonde hair, blue eyes and very fair skin! News flash, Cameron Diaz is also a Latina.

      • Elfie says:

You are Puerto Rican?! Oh gosh! Sorry, just excited to see another Boricua here!

      • buckley says:

        Another Puertorican here!

      • REDSLIP says:

I don’t doubt that there are naturally fair-haired Latinas, but Christina’s weave is nasty and fake.

      • Bad Fairy says:

WHy is everyone being so sensitive? If I leave the house with a blonde friend everyone thinks we are sisters. Its just how people are. Just because you aren’t white doesn’t make it racist.

    • Ash says:

Latin / Hispanic is not considered a world race. It’s a culture. In the West we use Hispanic as an identifying race for sake of ease. It’d odd.

      • mia girl says:

Acually, Hispanic/Latino is used to identify a general “ethnicity” not to identify a race.

In the latest U.S. Census for example, everyone was asked if they are Hispanic/Latino. The next question, regardless of answering “yes” to Hispanic, is to identify your race (Black, White, Asian…)

    • 221jazz says:

Sonia love your comment and agree. The thought that comes to my mind when I read “Cristina is a proud latina”……now that you are fat you are a proud latina? keep it moving Cristina.

  2. truthful says:

the old Dolly Parton, all she nds to do is change to country music and its a wrap!

I wonder how much money has that boyfriend stolen and hidden away by now??? sneaky enabler.

  3. kieslowski says:

Love your Christina Aguilera posts, especially when you do her “drunk speech”. LOL, how many people did it take to get her in that dress?

  4. Isabella says:

    She is a Latina?!?

    • renee says:

Look at her last name. I believe she’s Irish on her mum’s side I think that her biological father is from Ecuador…

  5. jen says:

Her size would be fine if she picked some more flattering clothes. Sequins could pop off there & hurt someone!

  6. REDSLIP says:

If she felt comfortable in her own skin she would drop the fake bleached hair and the botox.

  7. jermsmom says:

i always hate these “a friend close to …” or “an insider close to…” stories. I think it is more like “we are just pulling this out of our ass and want you to believe we have inside information, so play along, ok?”. I saw her on the AMA’s (yes, I watched. I admit, I wanted to see “Moves Like Jagger”.). She did look really bad. I agree it is ok to have curves, gain weight, get a little chunky – but wear something that fits and flatters or be subject to the ridicule. I was a bit surprised that she actually seemed sober. When i see the bloat in her face it doesn’t look like an alcohol abuse bloat – it reminds me more of friends I know who are taking hormones for invitro or even those who take steriods for cancer treatment.

    • heatheradair says:

She DID seem reasonably sober. And she stayed upright, and there was no tipping over or tripping or otherwise flubbing things.

So, uh, she has THAT going for her, for once….?

      • jermsmom says:

I was observing pretty closely as I almost expected her to be a real hot mess but the girl stayed up on those shoes (unlike Jenny McCarthy, lol!) and didn’t miss a beat – and she sounded pretty damn good, too. To digress a bit…I was so disappointed – really hoping “Moves Like Jagger” would have a full-out dance routine!

  8. crys737 says:

oh, now shes latina? after wanting to disassociate herself from anything latina? hypocrite. yeah sure, whatever you say x-tina (gives the side eye)…

    • SkyNet says:

That’s not true. She’s been on the cover of Latina magazine, has given them a ton of interviews, and interviews on Spanish TV a lot. She’s also talked a lot about her dad, and how she enjoys both of her cultures.

    • Nicole says:

Are you just being ignorant or what? Early in her career, she did a spanish album. She pretty proud of her heritage.

      • hatsumomo says:

She did the spainsh version of Genie in a bottle phoneticly. She dosent actually know or speak Spanish. And I think that was for milking the most money out if that album than a nod to her roots.

  9. SkyNet says:

OMG! Of course she’s Latina. That’s old ass news. She’s always talked about how her dad is Ecuadorian. What kind of last name did you think Aguilera was?

On another note… That dress was all bad. She needs to stop drinking so that she can stop picking out clothes with double vision. She might have thought it was 2 sizes bigger.

  10. Dawning Red says:

When she says she loves her curves, is she talking about her body, or the shape of a bottle of Jack Daniels?

  11. Happy21 says:

The pic I saw of her yesterday did her justice. She didn’t look as lumpy as the photo above. Guess she didn’t wear a Spanx.

My whole issue is that if she wants to be this curvy then fine. She doesn’t need to be rail thn. BUT, she really needs to dress in a way that suits her body type. OR wear a damned spanx and a darker coloured dress that might be a little more slimming. She’s a mess. Her boobs are awful – the implants and the weight gain have not helped her booby cause.

  12. Kelly says:

The dress…nothing wrong with wearing tight dresses IF THEY FIT. That shit is shoehorned in.

The real issue here is, What in tarnation is going on with her hair in the last pic??? White on the top (with George Washington hair powder), yellowish on the sides, and ORANGE along the edges of her face!!! WTF! Is that Wet n Wild bronzer or Cover Girl “Warm Honey” foundation?

  13. lila says:

I hate the fact that the word ‘curvy’ has been stolen to describe practically any body type that isn’t stick thin. It used to be if someone said they were curvy, I pictured an hourglass figure. Now curvy can mean just about anything. Some honest adjectives that apply to Christina are bloated, doughy and unhealthy!

  14. heatheradair says:

Yes, I think that was aureola.

Oh, Christina………woman, get it together. you’re a parody now — and that’s SUCH a waste of talent.

  15. Coby says:

It’s not her body that is the problem, but her face looks so bloated. Which is a shame

    • Hakura says:

I think you really nailed it, there. For trouble spots on a woman’s *body*, there are all sorts of tricks & illusions to correct how it appears under the clothing.

But short of losing the weight or having surgery, you can’t pick & choose how the weight in your face lays.

  16. Eleonor says:

The point is: you can be cury and wearing revealing dresses without looking ridicoulous!

  17. DavidBowie says:

Looks like two pigs fighting under a blanket.

  18. DavidBowie says:

Looks like a two pound sausage in a one pound casing.

  19. Shelb says:

From that clip, it looks like she took out the implants. They look the same size, give or take, but would be HUGE now if the weight gain on top.

    • renee says:

I think that her implants are still in. I saw a still from that performance and she had a dent in one them, it looked like it was from an implant.

  20. mia girl says:

    Wow, what spin!

Actually, this goes to show what a terrible role model she is. Aguilera is so cynical and self-absorbed that she will use her weight gain (driven by substance abuse and an unhealthy lifestyle) to try to score pr points. “Let’s say that I am just embracing my Latina roots and filling out and loving my curves. Let’s take my toxic life, spin it into empowerment and pretend that Latina girls with curves now have their new leader… after all, America Ferrera is out of the picture and it seems to be working for Demi Lovato”

I personally don’t think celebrities should live their lives to be role models. But now that she’s anointed herself as one, let me tell her how to be a good role model… Stop drinking/abusing; be humble, grateful, charitable, confident, hard-working and healthy. No matter what you look like, those are things that young girls can look up to.

And PS, Aguilera, please buy yourself some SPANX.

  21. Bob says:

    Latina?? I think she’s Fatina.

  22. LittleDeadGrrl says:

Yeah, curvy doesn’t fit her. She has nice hips and a great ass but her stomach is just bloated. Sorry. Not curvy. Also she mostly made her money off of looking sexy, she has a great voice, but let’s be honest she didn’t market herself as an Adele, she marketed herself a sex symbol and if you do that to yourself when you start getting fat people will comment.

  23. Quest says:

There is nothing wrong with being curvy or even on the “thick” side but you gotta know how to dress (what works and what don’t). Xtina can’t seem to figure that out and no one should be that orange

  24. Shelly says:

If she would just dress in clothing that fits her and lose the terrible hair she would look good. I kind of like her bigger.

  25. Criss says:

She’s kicking all the bitches to the curb. All my friends are fatter than me and they look sexy. I wish they would show off their female curves like this. Besides she’s the one with the millions, laugh laugh. Maybe she’s staying chubby to help her voice.

  26. annie says:

Having a gut does not make one curvy

  27. LeeLoo says:

She doesn’t look bad. If she ditched the clown makeup, exercised a bit, and dyed her hair to it’s natural color and put on curvy appropriate outfits, I would think she is very pretty. My major concern is the booze bloat look. There’s a difference between looking healthy and looking bloated and unhealthy and Christina falls into the latter category.

  28. nikzilla37 says:

I don’t think she looks nearly as terrible as the critics are saying and frankly, I agree she is sending a message to bigger girls that it’s ok to not be a size 4 and still be sexy but, Dear God woman, dress for your figure. That bandage dress and no pants look from a few weeks ago is not doing you any favors.

  29. gg says:

If I have to see her bowlegged orange wierd pins one more time I’m going to turn into stone. Please stop wearing short dresses, hon. They do you NO FAVORS!

  30. hatsumomo says:

My picks on her outfit, and I have many, is that she looked like she was wearing too tight panties on the hip part. Im a fuller figure and wear tight dresses sometimes too but NEVER wear tight panties with it, it will cut into your hips and make you look like you have a natural muffin-top. and wear some kind of beige ‘smoother’ underneath so your hips round evenly because lets face it, everyone’s going to be looking anyways. And that dress was too low cut in the front, in the stills at Dlisted, you can see the unnatural wrinkles her implants made when she moved her arms. It looked like her boobs are sagging prematurely. And the bushes of fake polyester hair and orange skin needs to go too, who is she fooling at this point?

  31. Rio says:

God, I’m just imaging the inside of that “costs more than my monthly paycheck” snow-white dress just stained to sh!t with orange spray-tan. You know that thing’ll never be clean again.

  32. KJ says:

Here’s why she’s gained weight, and it’s not because she’s embracing her “Latina” roots. She’s already done that phase in her career. Christina was super tiny when she first popped up. Like lollipop head tiny. There are persistent rumors she battled an eating disorder through much of her early career. Ask anyone who has struggled with them or known someone who has, binging/purging and not eating completely fucks up your metabolism. Your body gets so used to a low caloric intake that it stores anything it can to keep the sufferer from dying. And most people who recover tend to put a little bit extra weight (see Demi Lovato, who seems to be actually embracing the little extra so she can have a healthy relationship with food), and their body will maintain it just in case because its in protect mode. If the rumors are true, that she was an eating disorder sufferer, coupled with her, ahem, recent drinking habits, and you’ve got someone who’s clamoring to make her weight gain seem totally intentional and not the product of some pretty bad habits.

    • Sara says:

That’s not exactly true. That whole ‘ruin your metabolism’ is a myth. Skinny people have a lower metabolism than heavier people. If she’s bigger it should be easier for her to lose weight, not harder. Metabolism is effected by overall body temp and body weight. The more you weigh (especially because muscle is heavier than fat) the higher your metabolism. That’s why tall people (like my husband) get to eat more food and stay slim. I get to eat more food now (because I’m pregnant, which raises body temp and therefore metabolism) than I did before and not pile on the pounds. Your only going to see a drastic drop is core body temp is people who are literally starving, like someone with severe anorexia.

    • JaneWonderfalls says:

I agree, Christina was super skinny when she came onto the scene and to be honest she never embraced her “latina roots” until it was popular in the entertainment industry during what they called the “Latin Explosion” Don’t use race or background as an excuse because your gaining weight. I’m black american and I don’t use I’m embracing black culture since I’ve gain weight. It kills me when people use these social standings to excuse behaviors. One I don’t think she is horribly overweight in general and yes I actually think she is talented, but I’m not going to excuse her for habits that can be changed instead of saying ” Yeah because she is this or that it’s okay.Just so we are clear this is nothing against hispanic, or other culture, I have a diverse family back ground so to disrespect my Hispanic, white, black, asian etc, sisters is and will never be my intent.

  33. Denise says:

The point is, our metabolism slows down by our thirties. I am in my forties and I have made the decision to work out and watch what I eat. If she wants to drink herself into bloat…fine, but wear appropriate clothes. The issue is not her weight, but the inappropriate and unattractive way that she dresses. I love Mo’nique because she is a big girl who knows how to dress, as does Queen Latifah.

  34. poof says:

oh Wow, She’s latina nowwwwww? ok.

  35. Alexis says:

Hmmm, I love how her and Mariah started busting out their formerly-studiously-downplayed ethnic backgrounds (Mariah is half-black/Latina) once they got older and gained weight. I don’t think it’s fully BS because they might like their figures heavier as they get older in part because of their backgrounds. But still.

That being said, Christina is not curvy — she’s just unhealthy. I can imagine her rocking a healthy, actually curvy figure, but her face and tummy tell the whole boozy story. And the alcohol abuse makes her a bad role model for anyone.

    • Jennifer says:

They did not. I’ve been following both since they came out and you could not NOT hear about their racial or ethnic makeup — over and over again. Mariah’s black dad, Christina’ Ecuadorian background were almost always mentioned in interviews and stories on them, and in fact continue to be. Both frequently commented (and still do) on how their racial/ethnic backgrounds inform who they are.
It’s like the way in Liv Tyler’s interviews there’s nearly always mention of her dad or she gets asked about him. But if someone saw a few interviews where she was neither asked about nor mentioned Steven Tyler being her dad, that would not mean she or anyone was trying to “studiously downplay” the fact her dad is Steven Tyler.

  36. RocketMerry says:

Yeah, that doesn’t look like normal food weight gain. Unless she lives next to a “all-you-can-eat” pizza place. Then it could be. *nods wisely*

  37. sapphire says:

Right, “loving your curves” =silicone? Fake hair and orange skin. Puh-leese.

  38. KO says:

anyone else notice in the close-up picture how the orange seeped into her hair?

    • KittyKat says:

Wondering the same thing.. does she not have “people” to tell her this? or a mirror… good god! Emberrased for her. As for the weight. Big deal. They make bigger sizes.

  39. Kimbob says:

Yes, I like the feigned drunk speech you do for her…so funny!

I hope one day she “wakes up” to see what she’s done to herself, that’s for sure.

On another note…she does still have a GLORIOUS voice. This is her God-given talent. I’m just really surprised the booze hasn’t ruined her voice yet. She’s lucky….so far!

  40. wunder says:

It’s her voice that matters-not her size. Her fans will be her fans regardless if she’s a size 2 or size 12.

  41. Callumna says:

It’s an insult to your heritage to blame alchoholic drunk belly bloat on being ethnic. Annoying.

Couple it with white blonde barbie clown wig and you’ve really lost all crediblity.

And I left the Bieber post where he’s wearing girl jeans for this?

  42. Twez says:

Not just bronzer in her hairline, but there is white powder in her part. Jesus wept. I can only think it is some pathetic attempt to cover her roots.

    • Snowpea says:

I am a totally natural white blonde (German grandmother) and its well known that talcum powder combed through dirty/greasy blonde hair brings it back to life.

However, the trick is to comb a VERY SMALL amount and it makes it all fresh and matte looking.

Christina has dumped a whole load of it in her hair and it looks like absolute shit!

  43. Ally says:

Hispanic refers to someone who is ‘Spanish speaking’. Doesn’t matter if you’re from Spain, or Mexico, or any country in South America. Aguilera is pretty, and yes, would look killer in more flattering clothes. People are tough on her b/c she was so thin as a teenager. The woman can still sing well, whether thick or thin. IMHO.

  44. Cerulean says:

She looks like a short chubby drunken tranny truck stop stripper all gussied up.
I’m also sooo tired of ethnicity being used as an excuse for gluttony. She is a boozy bloated mess. What has that got to do with being Latin?
She looks like a human Miss Piggy from the Muppets in that horrid revolting dress. Shiny, too small and white!!!!!! Does no one on her team have the cajones to tell trucky that she looks terrible?

  45. It is ME!! says:

What is up with all these “she’s Latina?” and “now she’s embracing her Latina side because of her weight gain” comments? What B.S.! Do people ever think that maybe Christina wasn’t “Latina-looking or acting” enough for the Latinos, but she wasn’t “white enough” for white folks because her last name “sounds funny”? Same thing with Mariah- not “black enough” but not “white enough” either for both segments of society. It’s a lose-lose situation for multi-racial and multi-ethnic kids- can’t be accepted by either side. Trust me, I’ve walked in those shoes. Society hates a half-breed, it seems. Why others can’t let people embrace what they are and all that they are without the “not Latina enough,” “not white or black enough” bullcrap is simply beyond me.

That being said, homegirl needs to stay sober for her kid. I could care less what she weighs or what she wears, girl’s got pipes.

    • Rio says:

I’m not sure anyone ever noticed or cared she was “Latina” when she started out– honestly, she wasn’t marketed as such and she never presented herself as Latina until after her “teen pop” years.
I don’t think it’s a matter of being “too White for Latins and too Latin for Whites”– I’m roughly the same background as her (thus my “Latina” screen name and Ginger avatar). No one in my peer group ever associated her as one or the other…honestly, she was seen as the “lesser” Britney and that was it.

That being said, her curves are lovely. The way we all know they got there…not so much. I find it interesting that there’s basically NO mention of her kid/ex-husband anymore. NONE. It’s like they’ve dropped off the radar. Has she even mentioned Max(?) in the last year or so? I understand keeping your kid private, but it’s weird that she doesn’t even seem to acknowledge him anymore.

  46. Heine says:

People love to play fast and loose with the ‘curvy’ adjective. Curvy does not equal gut.

Girl is bloated and has a beer gut. She can’t see how bad she looks and her sycophantic hangers-on won’t tell her.

She has an amazing voice. Why doesn’t she just stop with the sexpot thing and really sing? She is one of the few female artists who can get away with just standing on stage and singing because she has a beautiful natural instrument.

    Get with the program, Aguilera!

    • Emma says:

Christina is only 5’1″ tall (and she certainly isn’t big-boned), so ‘any’ extra weight is going to show on her small frame. As a small-framed, 5’1″ woman myself, I’m willing to bet she isn’t more than 15 pounds over weight. But believe me, every speck of it shows on a short, small frame.

I think people should give her break. She’s had a rough year. Breaking up with her husband (whom she really thought she’d be with through this life) couldn’t have been an easy thing, and it must be extremely hard to watch one-note, studio manufactured wonder Britney Spears sleep walk and lip-sync through her tours to greater success. That must really bite the big one for a truly gifted singer with an authentic 4-octave vocal range.

      • Ash says:

This. I’m 5’9″, and I can carry a solid extra 25 lbs without going up more than 1 size. My mother, however, is an even 5’0″ and looks chubby with the slightest amount of weight gain.

      • cerulean says:

Loads of people divorce but keep it together for their children’s sake. Falling apart like this is not an option when children are involved. Her career is where it is because she won’t change her look, isn’t a nice person and the choices she made. Period. No sympathy for her. Sorry.

      • Heine says:

@Emma and Ash: it’s not about the fact that she’s tiny and has gained weight. That isn’t what I was talking about.

She doesn’t see herself. She isn’t wearing a flattering dress, her makeup is awful, her hair is ridiculous and looks like a big plastic Barbie wig and she’s literally ORANGE.

She is clearly bloated for some reason and has gained some weight. Why then would she choose to wear a dress that highlights all of that?

I don’t care that she’s gained weight; everyone does to some degree as they get older. But most people also have some idea of what is appropriately flattering on a fuller figure.

  47. Maggie says:

I think she looks great, and Americans should stop being obsessed with wanting to look like stick figures.

  48. blc says:

what a load of crap. She “loves her curves!” until she can get around to losing the weight. We have heard it before. Jennifer Love Hewitt anyone?? Pathetic! I would respect her at least if she would admit she let herself go and was working on it. But pretending she got fat on purpose for the good of others? BS!

  49. novaraen says:

She was thinner than she is now when she was pregnant and this whirlwind weight gain of the past year is NOT healthy. She looks a bloated mess…not just like she’s put some pounds on. There is a difference.

    • Emma says:

She divorced her husband, her film debut flopped, and Britney Spears’ sleep-walking tours are making millions. She’s had a rough year … give the woman a break.

      • NM9005 says:

Didn’t she cheat on her husband? She hooked up with her new guy during producation of Burlesque but everybody seems to forget that.

If she just gained weight due to excessive eating, who cares. It’s just that she’s boozing too much and whatnot. If she’s ill than she should seek help, not find excuses for the messy state she is in. Her new guy doesn’t seem like a good influence either. He’s a K-Fed and Aguilera is lost. And even though she has pipes (actually being “fat” actually gives one a better voice –> Maria Callas, Pavarotti, Aretha). People seem to dislike her a lot, not only the public but the industry too. It’s no secret that’s she isn’t nice and polite and made a lot of enemies.
I like her songs and voice (she made money of me in her Dirty days and Back to Basics was awesome) but her personality is the shits.

  50. Jennifer says:

I think she is mentioning her Latin culture/background to explain her instinctive self acceptance of her weight. No matter HOW she put on the weight. (Always having seconds, or always drinking beer…)

I am not Latina, but half black, and I THINK (?) Latino culture, like black culture, tends to accept, at least and possibly even prefer women to have a bit of weight on them. As opposed to the dominant culture’s status quo for women, which says to be conscientious about staying small. I think white women TEND to be affected by that message more, because they are expected to go with the status quo because of being white like most models, actresses in media are.

Because they have no counter-message in thier background, culture, etc. Yes, Christina is white too, but she is also Latina. So she’s less affected.

At least in black culture, you will TEND to see a curvier woman as the ideal when it comes to sexual attractiveness. I think it may be similar in Latin cultures.

Though I sometimes felt like “I’m too big” in my white environment i grew up in, and comparing myself to
actresses, models. Yet I just never felt REALLY insecure about it … I think because ultimately I did intuitivey like my curvier figure and backside because that was my first message due to my background. ….even before JLo came on the scene to validate big booties in a mainstream way…

I say all this to say, I think this is the same type place Christina is coming from.
Also Christina Aguilera has always spoken of her Latina heritage, I think she even did a Spanish album…?

  51. Ash says:

Eh, she’s tiny. The smallest weight gain can look chubby on a petite frame. She’s had a rough year, give the woman a break. Although the dress is not flattering at all.

Curvy is overused, though. Many women are curvy, but weight gain =/= curvy automatically.

  52. Jennifer says:

p.s. Im in the minority on this board but I think Christina looks good…yes a little chubby, but she still has a nice shape. (And she is pretty with good skin.)
I like that there a handfull (and Lord knows it is no more than a handful) of celebrity women who have a shape that is a different type of ideal. In fact, many people do PREFER women with bodies like Aguilera, Beyonce, Tyra Banks, Jessica Simpson ….Yes including the belly and the thick legs. Believe it or not, many people would rather see the above women in a bikini than any of the thin celebrities. Personally I think variety is the spice of life. Skinny, curvy, athletic, chubby-voluptuous …they can all be beautiful.

  53. sandy says:

she’s a hot mess but this is the best she’s looked in a while

  54. Brit says:

Latino is not a race or ethnicity. Many latin countries are multi-ethnic like the U.S., so there are asians, europeans, african, indiginous(sp) people, and et al. Christina is a white latina, because her father is of european ancestry just like Giselle Bundchen.

    • Mila says:

Thank you for saying that. One thing is race, and another thing is ethnicity, and yet another thing is a linguistic group (which is what Hispanics really are). A race would be a general group like Sub-Saharan African, East Asian, Caucasian or Native American. An ethnicity would be a sub-set like a Mayan, a Highland Scot, a Zulu or an Eskimo. A linguistic group is anyone who comes from a country that speaks a certain language. A Hispanic speaks Spanish and has historical ties with either Spain or its former Spanish Empire. A Hispanic can be from any of the races mentioned or a combination of them, and ethnically they can be Maya, Azteca, Gaucho, Porte~o, Andino, Pastuzo, Coste~o, Amazonico, Criollo, Antioque~o, Gallego, Andaluz, Gitano, Catalan, Manchego, etc, etc… You could literally say that Hispanics are an equal opportunity group, because there is no such thing as a Hispanic race or even ethnicity.

  55. wunder says:

SO what if she’s a gal who heavier?

She looks 160-180 lbs however. . . How tall is she???

  56. theaPie says:

    Bulges do not equal curves.

  57. Ranga says:

I read a blind item a while ago about a pop star who was deliberately putting on weight and looking a mess so she could have a comeback when she got clean and slim again, maybe it’s her.

  58. Ashstoys says:

Beside the fact that the dress is too tight and her belly is stickinG out of it. Please just wear an appropriate dress style if your proud of your curves. What up with the powder in the roots of her hair and the orange hair pieces around her face? was she unable to get a hair appointment for the Music Awards? Did she try and bleach her hair herself? What up with that.

  59. MM says:

she has curves, so **** what! whats the big deal? she saved maroon 5’s ass, if she would not be in that song, the song would suck, she has a talent, please people, salute it instead of hating it!

  60. ema82m says:

Ok can I just say that for me the worse thing about that video was actually Adam Levine’s singing!!!! Don’t get me wrong I really love him & particularly this song but he sounded sh!t!!

    • Sara says:

lol, yeah I skipped most of it because I don’t like that song at all. I didn’t even know who sang it until I read this.

  61. Jenn12 says:

I don’t think a little extra weight is a problem, nor do I have an issue with her wearing that dress if she’s proud. However, if she’s so proud of herself, why the wigs and pounds of makeup (which she did even when thin)? It’s not healthy to drink yourself through life and she clearly is okay with cheating on her then husband and being a nonexistent parent to their son. She is always photographed with her boyfriend. The dress is not flattering on pretty much anyone. She is not a feminist; she is dependent on men; she buries herself under a Tammy Faye appearance. She talks nonstop about her dad “abusing” her mother and herself, as well as abandoning them- seems odd that she identifies with his culture as opposed to both her parents’ cultures, or even her mom’s due to the abuse. She is an opportunist who tries to sell herself in what she thinks is the coolest possible light. I remember her faux ghetto phase years back. She is ridiculous.

  62. whatevs says:

aww man, her face in the last photo is giving me uncanny valley vibes… i’m guessing she is on something which makes her bloat horribly. and no it can’t be booze this looks unnatural. remember when eminem was trying to quit vicodin or something so hr started using some other painkiller and he started bloating like a real, live m&m? on the other hand mariah was trying to conceive and the hormones she took made her bloat. so i’m guessing she’s on some kind of prescribed medicine that makes her look like this. not all of it is fat gain imo

  63. MissVJJ says:

I am a Hondureña, and I love my ass and chichis 🙂 I however, do not like having a little belly. I am 5′, and maybe Im being too hard on myself, but I think it really shows on my frame (mostly when I wear tighter clothing). But when Im at work in my scrubs, I look fine.

  64. Ruffian9 says:

I have no problem with her weight. I do have a problem with women who seem incapable of wearing a dress the correct size. Blake Lively suffers from the same disorder. Size up ladies – it looks better and is waaay more comfortable!!

  65. Havik says:

I can’t begrudge her for any weight gain; recently I had a bout with feet problems, and haven’t been working out as much as I should.
However, I think she definitely needs a change in the hair/makeup department. There’s a pretty girl under all that slap, somewhere! D:

And for those saying “Now she’s owning her heritage?!” Well, I kind of like that she hasn’t exploited it. She just doesn’t feel the need to talk about it every minute of every day.

  66. Luckylilgem says:

She would’ve looked better in a low plunging v-neck navy blue dress or a black vest & pant suit.

  67. tmbg says:

Maybe I haven’t followed the news on her enough, but how do we know this is from alcohol? I was thinking maybe she went into a depression after her divorce and started overeating.

To me, curvy is Joan Holloway from Mad Men – not this.

  68. Mandi_So_CA says:

Ok, obviously she has some issues, but weight aside (and choice in clothing), that woman can belt out a song! There are so many people in this world that tear others down, I think we have to look at the positive – she has talent. A person can always lose weight, but having a rare gift outweighs (no pun intended) everything else.

  69. Sara says:

Forget about how she looks, does anyone else dislike her singing? I know she can hit notes but she always seems to be belting those notes out as loudly as possible and it just kind of annoys me. I don’t find her singing voice pleasing at all.

And she looks like a train wreck, Latina or not.

    • tmbg says:

I like a couple of her songs, but most of them make my ears ring. My mom asked me why she always has to shout and is “all over the place” (her words, not mine). I know this is an unpopular opinion, but I just tend to enjoy singers whose voices are smoother and mellower.

  70. Pirouette says:

I don’t particularly care if she is described as “curvy”, “healthy”, or “fat”, but I believe that her body size is average and y’all are hyper-critical. Are the judgemental people here not walking down the street every day and seeing women that look like this? Like, alot of women?

    Just don’t waste my time.

  71. Christina1987 says:

I’m so fed up with reading about curvy Latinas or black women. I have a full D Cup (ok, they are fake but so what?), my butt is like Kim Kardashians and I have a small waist. But just because I am not a Latina I am considered borderline fat instead of curvy even though I’m smaller that Xtina now. So unfair…

  72. MAMAKOWALSKA says:

She needs the brown hair and then I’ll give her Latina status!!!

  73. piedlourde says:

A bit like the misconception that all native Scandinavians are tall, blond, and blue eyed. It’s simply not the case.

  74. Zigggy says:

She sure can sing- that’s what matters.

  75. skuddles says:

Oh please – fake boobs and flab do not a role model make!

  76. Nan says:

I forget she has a kid.

I wouldn’t be surprised if she slid into depression after having her son and then kept spiraling downward and made it worse after separating. She needs help. Not because she’s bigger – seriously, who cares about that – but because she’s on the edge of truly mucking up her life.

  77. whothefiis says:

Do we ever get direct quotes anymore? Or is everything from now on going to be second-hand and third-hand speculation?

  78. suzymoon says:

OH NOW SHES A LATINA YEAH???any excuse will do Christina?

  79. Mara says:

Excuses. Aguilera is paid in part to be attractive. She’s failed.

If she wants to be taken serious, she needs a full body overhaul before she steps back into a studio.

  80. cecizahn says:

Im latina. FOR ME just because you have a parent or parents that are latin that doesnt make you a latina. If you were born in the US u are an american. I hate when the use the “roots” to sell their product, way of thinking, or else.
