Penelope Cruz debuts new, shorter, bangsier mom hair: cute or fug?

I barely recognized Penelope Cruz in these photos. That’s a powerful haircut, correct? When the person’s face seems to completely change just be adding some layers and fluffing some junk up. I actually thought, at first glance, that this was one of those Megan Fox/Tamara Ecclestone hybrid women, because some of these brunettes are seriously starting to look alike.

Anyway, these are photos of Penelope (and Emile Hirsch) at the Turin Film Festival, where they premiered their new film, Venuto al Mondo. I actually like Penelope’s dress – it’s L’Wren Scott, and it’s got a nice balance of conservative and clingy/sexy. But what do you think of Penelope’s new hair? This isn’t her first bangs-look. She started doing itsy-bitsy bangs (trauma) earlier this year. It got really bad when she was promoting that last Pirates of Caribbean movie, but I still suspect those tiny bangs were some kind of clip-ons. And then Penelope did the longer bangsy-layers for a film, and now we’ve got this on our hands – a shorter haircut overall, with longer bangs.

Thoughts? My hair puffs up like this when it’s humid, so I’m not entirely convinced that this is the hairstyle Penelope intended to have. Overall, I think it ages her – she’s still a beautiful woman, but this feels like a “I’m a mom now, I need something low-maintenance” rather than an actual trendy hairstyle. So… I kind of think it sucks.

wow, hair can really make or break a person’s looks. not good.

  2. Erinn says:

Not a fan. I do think it ages her a lot.

  3. bea says:

Her face is really square and that cut is accentuating that, but not in a good way. I think she looks best with long hair.

The dress looks good on her in the full length pic, although I thinks it’s more tight than clingy.

She´s always pretty no matter what she does!

  5. Zay says:

She is looking like that ‘Castle’ lady, what is her name? I think she looks good though =/

  6. Ell says:

Everyone needs a change now and again, she’s a stunning woman whatever her hairstyle.

    Loving her shoes.

  7. Missy Mara says:

She looks like Sarah Palin… not good!

  8. Christine says:

Isn’t it a trick of Hollywood types to change their hair when they get work done on the face?

  9. anemoneblue says:

This is not a good look for her. The darker and short do makes her look way older.

  10. Donno says:

she is just so beautiful.. long life to her

Never thought a hair cut could age you 10 years and make your nose look that much worse.

“That’s a powerful haircut, correct? When the person’s face seems to completely change just be adding some layers and fluffing some junk up.”–No. Penelope had work done on her face and the hair is to distract you from noticing.
    It DOES age her.

This whole look is a mess. Her dress if ill fitting and her face looks very jowly. Bad shoes and hair really is dragging this look further down.

  14. BW says:

When you have a baby, your hair may fall out about an inch back around your forehead, and then grow back slowly. Her bangs look like a combover to cover the baby hair fallout.

  15. Mikamoo says:

She’s beautiful no matter what… she looks awesome… much better than these pin thin air heads walking around.

  16. BNF says:

She looks best in the top photo and the full length pic. I like the dress, but the hair cut ages her. I still kinda like it though. She’s pretty.

  17. Julie says:

Love her even bald. What I think ages her is the dress more than the hair.

  18. Cheyenne says:

Looks fine to me. I could even see her with a pixie cut. It would bring out her eyes.

  19. Sigh. says:

    Her whole look ages her.

Both her hair and her skirt would look better either longer or shorter than this.

🙁 This is my exact haircut!

What I wonder though, is how come the boring, one length style that everyone in Hollywood seems to sport is considered a trendy do and this isn’t? I’m sick of looking at the straight hair, all one lenth, parted down the middle look. To me, that ages one A LOT.

That dress is not flattering though.

I was going to say almost exactly what you said. That’s my hair too (only my hair is dark blonde)and what’s the deal with the parted down the middle straight hair? My hair naturally does the stick-out-wavy thing (like the picture) and to get it straight takes about 30 min with a flat iron. I am not sure about the aging thing as I pretty much just look old these days regardless. So, in the interest of self-promotion, I vote that she looks great!

      • Erinn says:

I don’t see anything wrong with the haircut in general- just doesn’t look good on her. It probably looks fine on you two 🙂

  21. Heather M (Heather) says:

Oh no. I always thought she would age so well! She has the Pamela Anderson age related nose enlargement going on in these photos, and the height on top makes her face look disproportionate and her jaw looks too small and square (which further ages her b/c bone and fat sometimes recedes in the lower half of the face).

Ugh, I did the bob thing, too, recently and am waiting impatiently for it to grow! I don’t even have kids. I was just bored. I don’t think it changed my face structure appearance, though. But I do feel shorter hair sometimes ages women (just bc it can be the soccer mom look). Penelope doesn’t even have the soccer mom look; it just is all wrong for her face. ALL WRONG.

  22. Jane says:

Don´t get the hate, I think she looks cute.

  23. Laughing Librarian says:

Please, how could Penelope Cruz ever be fug? And her body looks great post baby. Y’all are just jealous.

Also, she has a kid, so maybe this cut is easier to deal with. I have long hair for the first time in my life at age 47 (my sons are 10 and 11 now). My past hair was always uber short-I had a pixie cut as a child, then Dorothy Hamill then Lady Diana and then some short bob thing-pretty much just dry and go. My current long hair (past shoulder length) IS high maintenance. I bought a flat iron, for God’s sake-something I swore I would never do.

  24. Ruffian9 says:

Oh dear God what has she done? Cripes.

  25. JaneWonderfalls says:

Fug! A fugly haircut on a fugly women, she has never been attractive to me at all.

  26. Alix says:

Bad haircut for her. She looks like Nadia Comaneci!

  27. MAMAKOWALSKA says:

Why is it always when women start to age they think they have to CUT THEIR HAIR!!!!!

I can see not having my hair down to my ass anymore in the 40’s but tit length still rocks I think!!!

Just what a woman needs, it’s bad enough to have the wrinkles invading, I’ve always fought the battle of the buldge BUT CUTTING ALL YOUR HAIR OFF ISN’T GOING TO HELP!!!

Most of the time when I see a woman with really short hair, young…old…pretty….ugly….I always think geeeezzzz if she only grew out her hair….with the exception of women with hair troubles of course (bad coloring job, balding, bad texture, to old or incapacitated to take care of it etc.)

    LET THAT HAIR FLOW LADIES!!!!!!
