‘Men in Black III’ trailer: Dear Emma Thompson, are you poor?

Dear Emma Thompson,

WTF? Are you poor?

Love, K

So, this is the new trailer for the completely unnecessary third installment for Men In Black. To my recollection, MIB II wasn’t even a hit… let me check that out… it did decent business, better than I thought, but it was by no means a super-successful sequel. So why do yet another MIB film? Because Hollywood has run out of ideas? Sidenote: I’m not a big fan of saying “Hollywood has run out of ideas” because I don’t think they have – I think there are a lot of extremely talented storytellers who work in Hollywood, people who would make wonderful, interesting, creative films if only the studios would fund those projects. But studios won’t fund those projects because the studios worry that no one will go see those kinds of films. The studio thinks you’re stupid. And sometimes, you prove them right.

So, anyway. MIB III. Will Smith seems like he’s carrying this bitch, and even then, he might be phoning some of it in. I feel for Tommy Lee Jones, that old bastard. He must have wanted a nice paycheck too. As for Emma Thompson and Josh Brolin… I don’t even know. Emma’s not poor, and neither is Josh. Josh seems like the kind of actor more likely to just sign on to something because it looks fun, which maybe this did…? But Emma… I expected more from her.

HA! I know this is a totally unnecessary sequel (heck, MIB II already was) but I’m so watching this. I love all things Tommy Lee Jones and Bill Hader is also in this (not Sharlto Copley as I thought).

Plus, I love the way Josh Brolin is channeling Jones’s mannerisms.

    Will see this for sure.

I’m with you! This looks like a great, fun, dumb movie, which I don’t actually think Hollywood makes that many of these days. I feel like all the big action movies (esp. the super hero ones) have gotten all angsty, and sometimes I just want big and fun.

Although to be honest this looks like a recycling of the MIB2 plot, which is weird.

Also, I adore Emma Thompson, so if she wants to be in a stupid movie, it’s okay with me. But it does some like an odd choice on her part.

    • Samigirl says:

I’m right there with you, sister. I <3 the MIB movies, and I'll be there for this one! Hurry up, Memorial day!

    • Jenn says:

Tommy Lee makes these movies. His deadpan is funnier that anything Will Smith does.

    • the original bellaluna says:

Me too! I’m there! I have both MIB DVD’s.

  2. Happymom says:

Big paycheck for easy work? And presumably these guys are old pros and easy to work with? I can’t blame her-although I can’t imagine Cate Blanchett or Meryl Streep doing this.

    • Jenny says:

Cate did the last Indiana Jones and it was the worst one, her bad accent and all so, you never know these days.

    • manta says:

Well, Meryl Streep did She-Devil and Death becomes her, which weren’t exactly masterpieces. So I guess she, too, chose some projects for the paycheck or the fun escapism.
I think every actor has such movies on his resume at some point.

  3. NM9005 says:

Imelda Staunton once appeared in a Sylvester Stallone picture. Money is powerful.

  4. atlantapug says:

Emma Thompson has chosen some reaaly strange projects. Nanny McPhee anyone???
    Isn’t she an Oscar winner?
    I agree, WTF.

    • Kasey says:

I like Thompson and loved and own Nanny McPhee. I wonder if she has young kids and that influences her choosing movies like this that they can actually watch.

Anyway, this looks awesome! Going back in time…unknown, further conspiracy…K is missing. It seems more interesting than MIB 2. I SO want to watch this!!

    • Veruca says:

I believe she wrote the second one, so I think they’re a bit close to her heart.

As for this film — I just can’t. It’s payback for the Smiths inflicting those horribly smug children on the world.

He’ll never get another dime from me.

    • L says:

She actually wrote and produced both Nanny McPhee movies

    • Happymom says:

Nanny McPhee is actually a great, classic children’s book-and her daughter was young at the time, so that project made more sense.

  5. EmmaStoneWannabe says:

Wow. Emma. Really? Like, is this for real?

In other thoughts, her blue dress is very pretty (a little snug in that pic though). And Josh B is a hottie.

Every time I see Will Smith, I can only imagine that smug little whip-hair girl of his. They are twins.

  6. RocketMerry says:

I like Emma Thompson. I wonder what happened there… maybe she really wanted to sign on to “Angels in Black” or “Men then fiction” and got confused. She doesn’t look excited to be there.
Anyhow, maybe I’ll see this. Why not.

  7. Kaboom says:

@atlantapug Emma wrote the Nanny McPhee screenplays and by starring in the movies, made it more easily to get them funded

  8. Aria says:

I bet she did it for the fun.

    • heatheradair says:

AGREED. At some point as an actress you’re probably just like, “eh, whatever, I wanna hang out with Tommy Lee Jones and Josh Brolin and wear a suit and have a good time all the way to the bank.”

  9. Samantha says:

I am an every day reader of this site and I also worked on this film and read this site every day I worked on it. I swear its going to be better than the second one! Everyone working on it KNEW that that was what needed to happen…

  10. Kara Ann says:

I love Emma Thompson. I’m glad that she can do a fun, summer blockbuster! I think it’s great that she’s a multi-dimensional person who isn’t afraid of doing light popcorn fluff when she wants. Life’s too short to take yourself seriously all of the time. Good for Emma! Take that fat paycheck and have some fun.

  11. z says:

    looks pretty entertaining to me…

  12. Julia says:

    I love her.

Maybe at her age, she doesn’t receive many scripts and took this one, who knows.

On a side note, we black people really don’t crack. 43 years old Will Smith looks like he hasn’t age a iota since the first installment.

Never really liked Men in Black but I wuldn’t mind a third installment of Bad Boys. Bad Boys II was totally hillarious.

  13. Deborra Hall says:

Like sports once a fan always a fan. We all. Need a laugh. Will is going to bring it. Tommy like Al, all their movies you know are good. The other two will make MIBIII better.

  14. RobN says:

I think she’s trying to pull a Judi Dench. Be a serious actress who handles great projects, and then show up occasionally for an easy paycheck like Dench does with the Bond movies.

  15. Sigh. says:

Yeah, I’m not as nostalgic for this series as others, so this doesn’t look good to me at all. Feels…forced.

Having said that, I don’t fault/question Thompson’s appearance. It is a (relatively) successful franchise, so the exposure would “remind” the industry that she’s still around. I’m sure the competition for the general 40+ year old British white females is STIFF, since the “go-to” actresses seem to be Mirren, Dame Dench, Bonham-Carter, Dame Smith, Blethyn, etc., excluding the Americans who will gladly fake an accent (such as Streep).

  16. whatevs says:

idc if it’s useless the second movie was hilarious. i went seeing that though the first one sucked but if this one is anything as funny as the sequel, i’ll be glad. and emma thompson is known for being a fun outgoing person so maybe she accepted this one for fun. why not? maybe she watched the sequel and enjoyed it like many others. plus Tommy Lee Jones is a fantastic actor and not above it, I doubt he is poor he’s enjoyed a long career. Also Will Smith is a good actor, just because he did/does action movies don’t disqualify him. So are Angelina Jolie and Sir Ian and many others who participate in action/blockbuster movies.

  17. Sara says:

i would like to watch. and i think will make a huge sucess…

  18. I Choose Me says:

Hey Kaiser *blows raspberry* at ya. 😛

Now I like a good thought provoking quality film but sometimes, sometimes you just want to watch a bit of fluff. I liked the first MIB, hated the second (yay to Rosario Dawson, boo to no Linda Fiorentino) but this looks fun and cheesy as hell and I’ll definitely be checking it out.

    • Eve says:

That was Lara Flynn Boyle (in MIB II). She plays the alien turned into Victoria’s Secret model. I didn’t like her either.

P.S.: Linda Fiorentino was the forensic doctor in the first movie. They erased her character completely in the second one, there’s even a scene where Smith’s character mentions her (explaining to the audiences why she wasn’t in the sequel and, in that way, avoiding a plot hole) because in the end of MIB it was implied that she had become Kay’s substitute.

  19. Turtle Dove says:

Regardless of the movie, I’m glad to see Will on the screen again. He seems like a good guy; I was rooting for him and Jada, but based on CB reports it may not work out. Back to work for Will. Fill time with projects and time with the kids.

  20. Camille says:

    Looks awful.

  21. Gymo says:

I can understand any actor/actress wanting to be in a Will Smith movie, because as Charize said “it’s great riding the Will Smith train”.

Will Smith movies usually go Blockbuster at the box office, so great exposure and IMDB resume pumper.

  22. Genevieve says:

So am I supposed to NOT want to see this? Oops, I kinda want to. I can’t help it, I love big budget, special effects laden summer block busters.

  23. Jaxx says:

So what? So Emma wanted to hang out with the boys in suits and have some fun? I like her even better for it. She is a great actress and could take herself so seriously that she only does high class Brit stuff and I’d still like her. I love her that she’ll gladly step up to take on the aliens threatening our home planet. I hope she gets one of those big ass blasters! You go Emma!

  24. leetruth says:

    Can’t wait!

  25. jh says:

I admire Emma, but……the hair! Please get a flattering hairstyle, Emma. This one doesn’t look good on you from any angle.

  26. HD Trailers says:

The third of the Men in Black series after a long period and in 3D , excited to see the trailer
