Scarlett Johansson is tired of “ingenue” roles, wants to be taken seriously

Yes, Scarlett Johansson is still promoting her role as a zookeeper in We Bought a Zoo. I’ve heard so much about that movie that it feels like it should’ve come out ages ago, but no, the release date is still December 23. Anyway, Scarlett sat down with NY Mag to discuss more about the movie, and something amusing actually happened. Scar admitted that she intentionally gave her character a wide-legged stance so that her portrayal would be taken more seriously. Did I just really type that? Like, in order to play this character “full of conviction,” Scar felt it necessary to spread her legs. Those are the makings of a real actress, I guess:

On Her Zoo Character’s Wide-Legged Stance: I wanted that character to be full of conviction – and in order to be full of conviction, you have to be [pause] full of conviction, or it doesn’t work. I think part of that was the physicality of the role. It was this salt of the Earth, feet on the ground, ready to just solve the problem as it comes at you [character]. There’s something a little bit “in your own skin” about it, and I think that’s just the kind of stance she adopts.

On Whether She Prefer’s Animals Or Humans: I take humans most of the time, but I have to say that occasionally sitting on the couch with the dog, you’re just like, “Man, you’re the best company. This is bliss.” Just the dog and a nice old movie and you’re good to go. But yeah, people. I take people.

On Getting Tired Of Seductress Roles: I think that as I get older, I’m now looking at roles that move away from that kind of ingénue mold and are more based on women that are experienced and have had life before the point you find them in. That’s refreshing for me. It’s nice to be able to kind of transition into that. I feel like for me, right now, I don’t wanna take on any roles that aren’t challenging in some way. I never wanna play something I’ve done before. I wanna be able to just have everything be hard in some way. Otherwise, what’s the point?

On Her Upcoming Directing Gig, Summer Crossing: It’s a project I’ve been developing for five or six years. I’m writing it right now with Tristine Skyler, so we’ll see. You have a script and then you take it out and finance it. It’s a big preproduction process, but that’s where my focus is.

[From NY Mag Vulture]

Obviously, Scarlett really wants to be a director, but I honestly don’t see the project that she mentioned happening anytime soon. A few years ago, someone in power had the bright idea to let Scarlett helm a segment of New York, I Love You, but her portion ended up on the editing room floor instead of making it into the final cut, which is a shame because it was the one part of the movie that starred Kevin Bacon.

Just for kicks, here’s a video clip of Scarlett’s segment. A director, she is not.

Scarllet happens to be a very posite individual. Because once you got no demonstrated talent, and to still have such high hopes for oneself, is truly inspiring.

  2. Eleonor says:

Yes she wide legged and suddenly Marlon Brando was there.

  3. Lady_Luck says:

An extremely over-rated actress with a repulsive tattoo and a repulsive personality to match.

  4. Mia says:

I find her annoying, talentless and superficial – sorry but I can’t help it.

  5. crys737 says:

Solution:another Coppola film and less super hero crap.

  6. Helvetica says:

I watched at least 3 movies that she’s in, and gurl you got to CLOSE your mouth.
There are scenes where she suppose to think or shocked, listening to something and she always open her mouth.
She’s great in girl with pearl earrings though

  7. Kendall says:

Maybe if she had in discernible talent she’d be much more famous than she is. She’s always just going to be that “hot girl with big boobs” role in superhero films.

  8. NO SH¡T says:

Of course its hard to be taken seriously when you don’t have any talent and you’re just known for being hot duh.

  9. kibbles says:

She’s just lucky that Woody Allen had a “thing” for her. He launched her career because he was looking for a muse rather than the next Meryl Streep. Now she is on her own and she will likely flail. She’s only good in bombshell roles because she isn’t that talented and she has big boobs for her frame. That’s all there is to it. Woody Allen and her boobs is why she is a star. Not because she has the talent to Streep or Winslet.

  10. ruby says:

Wow she is so full of herself ! That wide-legged thing made me laugh, absolutely ridiculous.

As for her being sick of seductress roles – they were the only ones she could get simply because all she had to do was show those boobs of hers and make that stupid face with her mouth open and the men would drool. Now she has lost her boobs I doubt anyone would want her even for that.

And about her directing abilities… I had to fastforward through that clip, it was so boring and badly filmed. Very awkward. I hope no one wastes any money on a movie of hers.

  11. Sarah says:

I actually enjoyed her short movie. Bacon is so good. I could relate to the serenity he was experiencing, nothing is better than a good meal when hungry in front of such a great landscape. This was very poetic in the sense that this is such a simple but also great joy that anyone can reach, you just need to look closer and better at the ordinary things.
On the other hand, I liked “NY I love you” but some shorts in it were not better than this one!

  12. Cidee says:

Overrated on every level- talent, looks, sex appeal.

    • Dani says:

I can’ say anything about her acting ability, because I don’t know what makes an actor good, but I will agree with you on the latter two.

  13. normades says:

Now that her looks are slipping she won’t even be getting those “ingénue” roles.

  14. ruby says:

Oooooh look at this ! More precious Scarjo ! (yes now I’m going to go out of my way always to call her like that because I’m lazy that way) :

    “Don’t call her “ScarJo.”
“Oh, it’s awful,” she says. “It’s a laziness. People can’t actually say the whole name? It’s just bizarre.” After all, Cate Blanchett has no such nickname, and, says Johansson, “is not, like, ‘CaBla’ … Why is that? Why do I have to get stuck?”” (from the People website)

She compares herself to Cate Blanchett ? This is hilarious. Umm Scarjo you are nothing like Cate Blanchett. No need to drag her through the mud. Her marriage didn’t last 2 years, she didn’t date Sean Penn for the love of god XD And she is not known solely for her boobs. She can actually act. I know, amazing huh ?

    • Geneveve says:

I like CaBla, I’m going to start using that.

Here’s the thing with Scaro…he is not a good actres at all. She needs to thank her lucky stars that she even gets jobs. Her acting is just monatone & dead.

    • Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

Holy cats, I thought you were doing a spot-on imitation of her until I read the source.

      Some just write themselves, huh?

Were I in her position, I’d be happy to know that I am so recognized that people wouldn’t even need to say my full name for others to know my identity. I imagine that in time she’ll be eating her words as she works on this script because there’s nothing lazy about writing for a living. It’s a non-derisive nickname, Midol. Just breathe and think about the ocean.

  15. Kimberly says:

Um she needs more acting lessons, but overall . . . bitch can’t act worth shit. Seriously when was the last time you watched her in a film and thought, “wow she’s a great actress?” Was it in nanny diaries? nope. Or was it He’s just not that into you? Hell no she didn’t act well in that one either!! She’s a character actress only. She’s not seductive looking anymore, but looks like a pot bellied pig w/ tits.

  16. sandy says:

i feel sorry for her, she needs a team of pr to make her seem like she is better than she is, like some other actors.

  17. Cher says:

she needs a makeover in all aspects! including pr, actings lessons (loads) etc

  18. Jover says:

Talentless and annoying that she is she scored a Vanity Fair cover – but VF has been going down hill this october was the 50th anniversary of the death of Hemingway and they couldn’t even put him on the cover.

  19. Vera says:

I feel like an ass for saying it, but I think she should work on her arms a bit. Like, it looks like she’s gained weight. I don’t think she lose any that she may have gained, but her arms just look a bit flabby like she hasn’t been working out. Again, I can’t get over how much of an ass this is making me sound. A bit more weight looks good on most, but I still think keeping your arms and legs tighter and fit is also good. They can be shapely and fit.

Anyways, about the article, uh…what? I kind of get what she was saying, but it just sounded like she hadn’t really thought about it before saying it and it all just kind of came out oddly. But at the same time, it just sounds really bad.

I’ve always been on the fence about her. I haven’t seen tons of her films, but I’ve seen many of the period pieces/dramas and if all those there are none that I outright hate/dislike. It is just all the RomComs…so many. A few are alright, but she is in so many now. Iron Man 2 and the Avengers sort of seems like it will turn her career around in that it will show that she can play tougher and not constantly nice characters as she seems to play in all these RomComs.

  20. GirlyGirl says:

Yikes, let us know how that works out for ya hon.

  21. Jordan says:

So unless you make Oscar worthy material your first time out, you shouldn’t even try to be a director if you want? Wow, that’s a lot of wasted money going to film school I guess, if you only get one shot.

  22. Katie says:

What an annoying and overrated “actress”. Only Natalie Portman can beat her.
And she dares to compare herself with Cate Blanchett?!

  23. Mila says:

What talent? She always makes this one face where she looks confused.
Appearance vise she looks quite ordinary.
But she knew how to cash in herself, that’s achievement in Hollywood i think. Since their is always someone like her or even better.

  24. wres says:

She’s a chubbier version of Amber Heard.

  25. Rey T. Fox says:

She has the career Thora should’ve had.
