Duchess Kate in black velvet Alexander McQueen: beautiful or boring?

Yay! New Duchess Kate photos! These are pics of Kate on her special date night with both Prince Harry and Prince William. She was the black velvet meat in that sandwich, at least on that red carpet. Now… I’ve written some fan fiction about the possibility that Kate and Harry will end up in a “situation” with each other and that Kate’s future child could be a ginger, but none of the tabloids have picked up on it yet. COME ON. We’ve had fan-fiction and William and Pippa – we need Harry/Waity fan-fiction.

Anyway, the princes and the duchess were at the Sun Military Awards (“A Night of Heroes”), and Kate wore this lovely black velvet Alexander McQueen gown. I love the gown. I love the skirt of the gown in particular – it’s a beautifully cut dress. I like that Kate doesn’t look pregnant (I don’t think she is yet, and I don’t think she will be for months), but she looks… like she’s been eating solids? Her arms look toned and muscular, not bony. That’s nice. The only thing I don’t like? Her hair/weave/whatever. This dress deserved a real red carpet hairstyle, and Kate just did the same old thing.

Also – the jewelry that she’s wearing? Those pieces are apparently “wedding presents.” Who gives a bride jewelry for her wedding? Besides, like, the Queen and the bride’s parents, maybe.

This was one of the last public appearances Kate will make in 2011. She and William are due to make a charity visit later this week and then they’ll head to Sandringham for a royal holiday. And then in January, we’re supposed to hear which charities Kate will be signing on for. If she doesn’t have the goalpost moved again.

    Zzzzzzzzzz… Haha.

  2. Jayna says:

    I like it.

  3. GoodCapon says:

Toned and muscular? I have to disagree Kaiser. She looks really thin here.

Here is a close-up of her necklace
    http://29.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lwhd55PULN1r0e0igo1_500.jpg

YUCK. I don’t think it’s something an adult woman should wear, much less a ‘royal’.

    • Bermuda Blues says:

Oh MY! Are those tiny pink flowers? Does she have a matching hello kitty purse? So childish! Quite hideous!

      • Susie Q says:

How childish (and lazy) of you to pass comment without scrolling down and looking at the closeup pics of her necklace. It is diamond keys made with rubies.. she looks fantastic.

    • Val says:

I don’t think the necklace is that bad, but it does NOT go with the dress. A diamond necklace with no colored gemstones would have looked better.

    • mk says:

Wow – completely disagree – I love it and it adds some colour to her look. I would definitely wear it and I’m Kate’s age haha.

    • daisydoodle says:

seriously, who’s going to turn down diamonds and rubies? and if the Queen or some other important person gave her the piece, it was a good time to wear it with a black velvet dress.

    • Lia says:

Only little girls can enjoy flowers?? I don’t agree. Quit nitpicking.

    • whatevs says:

she doesn’t look toned she looks old. ladies please don’t starve yourselves this is the result. love the dress and all but she hardly looks her age anymore.

  4. Cathy says:

It’s a nice outfit and looks good on her. The necklace is a nice touch.

  5. AA says:

    Her arm look fantastic! Envy!!!

  6. Diane says:

Freakin gorgeous! But yeah, she could have done something different with her hair. Didn’t realize the royals could go strapless.

    • Fabianne says:

ITA. The dress is very simple but lovely. An updo to showcase the necklace would’ve been best here. And maybe better makeup.

    • bluhare says:

Diana got in trouble for wearing a strapless black gown when she was engaged to Charles. It wasn’t “done”. I think it’s interesting Kate has ignored some Royal Don’ts (like open toed shoes and no hose).

      • P.J. says:

I noticed that too, but there’s a difference: Diana ‘s dress shows a little cleavage and is off-the-shoulder, so is more daring than Kate’s. Kate’s gown has the ruffle covering the cleavage, plus the large necklace and long hair are keeping her quite covered up. Wonder if the designer added that cleavage-covering piece just for Kate? It looks great.

This dress will be iconic, I think. It’s the nicest thing Kate has worn so far besides her wedding attire, and it’s truly stunning. Bet it’ll be on display at the palace 100 years from now.

  7. Scarlet Vixen says:

I LOVE that dress!! And ya, maybe she should’ve worn her hair up, but at least she brushed it, which is alot more than most of the interchangeable starlets do these days. Also, her ridiculous love of black eyeliner finally seems to make sense with this outfit and event.

    • EmmaStoneWannabe says:

      An updo? For Waity? NEVER!

    • mk says:

Ya but if you look at closeups of her face, she’s seems like she’s finally listened to the criticism of her eyeliner — it’s blended in much more smoothly and it’s way less harsh than it usually is. She looks younger as a result I think.

  8. stephanie says:

fabulous. indeed she looks like she’s been eating solids.

  9. Emily says:

    Go Waity!

I think this analysis is spot-on. Hair/styling: meh.
    Dress: OMG YES!
Body: much better! (Although a few more pounds wouldn’t hurt her.)

    • CookieJar says:

      I agree 100%.
Looks like she started eating and that finally allows her to do exercise. I saw a clip of this event and her figure really looked fabulous.
The eyeliner does seem to make more sense here, but after all this time it always makes me giggle when I see her face. One of my friends does this eyeliner thing ALL the time, and when I first saw her without it after several years, I barely recognized her. (she was much prettier actually). I wonder if Will has ever seen her without make up, or she goes to bed like that.
Also giggled at the constant hair touching and that gaze she maintains when talking to someone trying to make the impression that she is interested 😀

  10. rogue says:

She still looks manly . The entire outfit is meh.

  11. K says:

I can’t believe no one has mentioned her ‘Scousebrow’! Other than that, I think she looks lovely.

    • N says:

Lol my best friend has eyebrows like that and once while getting them waxed the lady doing the waxing told her coworker in Spanish “If she has it like this up here can you imagine what it looks like down there” not knowing my friend speaks Spanish haha.

  12. spinner says:

    Absolutely beautiful!!!

  13. Alexis says:

Being toned doesn’t mean a jot — some people with eating disorders work out too; I remember how muscular her arms looked in a similar cut gown she wore a few months ago. That being said, she does seem like she gained a little weight. I mean, like 5 pounds, which is not much on someone her height. She needs to gain back more, though. And it’s hard to tell anyway — the dress is black.

I basically like the dress. She need to start doing updos, though. You can’t rock a classic style like she does and go to as many formal events as she does without putting up your hair sometimes. I think she’s afraid of showing off her scar/weave method/whatever, but…use makeup on the scar and/or get a new weave method, dude!

    • kibbles says:

I agree. Diane Keaton is a good example of a someone most women would find “fit” and “toned” but actually had a long battle with bulimia and to this day still looks like she needs to put on a few pounds. There are many other women out there in entertainment in the media who have secret eating disorders but look toned and “healthy” considering that the new norm for healthy has become to mean “as thin as possible”.

I like the dress too. As another commenter points out below, the dress adds much needed curves to her thin frame. It looks like it has added a few pounds from her chest to thigh area giving her an hourglass that we all know she does not have (anymore). She looked so much better before she became engaged and it is sad that her new body is what so many young girls will try to emulate to look like her.

  14. Zimmer says:

It looks like Wills is paying more attention to her in this dress than in the other outfits she’s worn lately. Wills looks really young almost boyish in some of these pictures, despite the balding hairline.

  15. almond says:

The dress is absolutely gorgeous, but the hair would have looked better in a chignon. I want that dress for Christmas.

  16. Oi says:

would have been a home run if she would pull her hair back so we could see the necklace better. Other than that its lovely.

  17. Richard Pryor says:

Why everybody wanna see this b*tch dressed like
    Lady Gaga!

She’s royalty yall! She cannot look a hot mess.

She looks beautiful unlike the rest of these HOT MESS unclassy hollywood HO3s!

  18. Messenger says:

the pic of the three of them together is perfect. they are it. hw only aspires…i am happy to see she is glamming it up a bit…(show ’em how its done katie) TWO handsome princes…now that’s good karma 🙂

  19. NYC_girl says:

    Mmmmm, Harry in a tux.

  20. lisa says:

I don’t find her “beautiful”. That word seems to be used for every woman that is in the media. I find her attractive. I think she is very pretty; in a ordinary way.

I love the dress. Great fit, but I wish her hair was different so you could get the full affect of the necklace and shoulders. Which is the point of a strapless dress. Flaunt the shoulders.

    • theaPie says:

I agree! But I wonder if she is shy about exposing that much of herself? Or afraid her scar will show?

    • kibbles says:

Any wealthy, young, skinny (preferably white) woman is considered “beautiful” at least once by the entertainment media which is built on making normal women (who don’t have the money and time to wear $10k dresses, spend hours at an expensive salon, or devote their entire day to exercise and looking good) feel bad about themselves.

  21. Victoria says:

What happened to Will? He was so cute! Never thought I’d switch to the Ginge. If you would have told me that when I was a kid I’d call your crazy.

I think Kate looks fabulous but the black makes her look even smaller and the camera puts on ten pounds.

I luke when her hair it’s loose. It’s so gorgeous and lush, but I would like to see her in an up do.

    • Amy says:

“What happened to Will? He was so cute! Never thought I’d switch to the Ginge. If you would have told me that when I was a kid I’d call your crazy.”

Haha. These are my sentiments EXACTLY.

    • T.C. says:

What happened to Will is that he grew up to look more like hid Dad. Harry is the hot one now and the cut him off in those pictures sadly. More Harry, less waity.

    • Alti says:

“What happened to Will?..” SO TRUE! Exact my thoughts… as teen he was so attractive, but now: bald, rabbit-teeth, bad suits and his “always-bored-mien”! Sorry, but he doesn´t look happy with his role as a prince… I don´t think he will make a good Prince of Wales or King… he doesn´t want this life… poor Willy…

  22. Tierra says:

I think she looks awesome, love the dress.

  23. danielle says:

She looks beautiful, love the dress, her arms look great, very muscular and toned, not just skinny. Good for her!

  24. ladybert62 says:

She is gorgeous and I love that dress – I think she should have worn her hair up or pulled back but she is beautiful with it up or down and classy!

  25. Tazina says:

The dress is lovely. She has the oddest face. In some photos she looks pretty. In others she is bordering on homely. It must be the angle the picture was taken.

    • anne_000 says:

@ Tazina – Yeah, it’s like that Seinfeld episode where Jerry’s gf looks either really good or really ugly depending on the lighting. In Kate’s case, I agree w/ u that it’s also in the angling & profile of her face. She changes from pretty to manly.

  26. The Original Mia says:

The dress is beautiful. Reminded me of Diana’s strapless black velvet dress from her engagement.

The necklace is meh, though. Very odd design.

She should have worn her hair up. Not only does the dress call for it, but it would also showcase the necklace.

  27. Suze says:

I know that Kate’s hair is considered one of her biggest assets, but I wish she would do it differently now and then. I saw a photo of her somewhere with her hair pulled back in a chignon and she looked extremely elegant that way. A more sophisticated hair style would have made this look spectacular.

All y’all make me giggle on the eyeliner, but I agree – in this instance, with this ensemble – it works.

The dress is spectacular and it suits her and the season. She works black well and that cut and fabric are perfect for her.

  28. crtb says:

This dress puts those pregnant rumors to rest.

  29. Listerino says:

Simple yet sophisticated. She looks great.

  30. Bermuda Blues says:

I thought a while ago there was some royal protocol leak, and Royals aren’t supposed to wear strapless to Royal events. (Kinda like how they always have to wear hose and close toed shoes)

I guess a ball is different. Kate’s hair covers her shoulders anyway.

The pictures on the daily mail made Kate’s arms look really muscular. Like approaching Madonna’s level of arm muscle. I wonder if Kate is a control freak like Madge. I imagine to sculpt your body into a whippet thin sprig of muscle you’ve got to have major control issues.

    • HoustonGrl says:

I agree…while she may have started eating again, she is an exercise fanatic IMO…that spells control freak.

    • HoustonGrl says:

I agree…while she may have started eating again, she is an exercise fanatic IMO…that spells control freak.

  31. Amy says:

She looks beautiful. That’s a perfect winter dress. And I love her hair, too, even if it is always the same. She’s like a paper doll — always exactly the same from the chin up. Ok. Now that I think of it that way, she really could stand to try some new hairstyles.

  32. Faye says:

Lovely, classic dress with a great necklace to take it from being plain to really elegant. Her hair is beautiful, as usual, but I think a classic updo would have made the outfit. Something with her hair swept up sleek and tidy so the emphasis would be on her pretty face.

I still think she looks lovely and the outfit is great.

  33. Mia says:

If Alexander McQueen was alive he was NEVER going to create something so outdated and boring! It is sad that they use his name and still run his business. He was a genius. Trying to copycat him is like painting the Mona Lisa all over again.

Also – Kate need to call Charlene of Monaco and ask for the number of her plastic surgeon.

  34. kazoo says:

    I LOVE it.

  35. chatcat says:

She is stunning…the dress, the hair, the jewels all of it. Anybody that says anything against it is simply jealous. Classic beauty will always be just that…classic and classy! 99% of men would say they’d rather have the look the Dutchess is wearing by their side than any other trendy or trampy looking thing.

    • maldita says:

Jealous of what? A useless waste of space who has never contributed anything to the world and has wasted an entire decade of her life partying, shopping, social climbing, and chasing after one man?

Just because people criticize your Saint Kate doesn’t mean they’re jealous. It means they’re not drinking the Kool-Aid you seem to have drank a whole pitcher of, and they’re not buying the media building this lazy woman up to be a role model for modern women who actually work to earn their own money and not rely on their parents for everything, and 10 years from now will probably be even more of a parasite to the taxpayers.

Nobody should be jealous of a do-nothing Stepford wife like Kate.

She has nothing to offer except her womb, which is why her many delusional fans are waiting for her to get pregnant because for them, that’s all Kate’s “job” is supposed to be, aside from looking pretty.

Maybe you’re the one who’s jealous, so you’re mooning over Kate’s supposed “beauty”, class, elegance, and wealth because you fantasize about having those for yourself. Jealousy doesn’t always result in negative feelings, but could also result in sugary praises like your comment. You’re projecting your jealous feelings onto those who criticize the object of your jealousy, because criticism of Kate translates to criticism of you since you want the qualities you think Kate has, and you want her lifestyle.

      • The Original Mia says:

        Preach it!

      • Cerulean says:

Exactly. Waity Stepford. Boring woman turning laziness into performance art.

      • inthekitchen says:

        Sing it sister (or brother)!

      • JulieM says:

I “fourth” that statement. I am so frigging sick of the Waity Katie fan club calling those of us who do not respect her, jealous. I am not jealous. She simply has no substance.

      • Jaded says:

Wills could have done so much better, what on earth does she DO all day? Shop? Cook? Go to the salon? Work out? Get lessons in being a Waity Queen from The Firm? She appears to be practically inarticulate or painfully nervous about having to speak in public. I assume that’s why she hasn’t jumped into any charity work as she’d be forced to actually speak and clearly can’t handle the responsibility. Diana was like that at first but she was 10 years younger when she was thrown off the deep end and learned to swim pretty darn quickly.

      • HoustonGrl says:

        Amen. I can’t stand her.

      • jamie says:

        have a glass of wine

      • GoodCapon says:

        I LOVE YOU MALDITA!

ChatCat, over to you! I would like to see what you have to say about Maldita’s comment!

      • kibbles says:

        THIS

  36. Sachi says:

The dress works well because it creates curves when there are none. Kate has a teeny-tiny waist and very narrow hips compared to her wide shoulders. She’s shaped like a “triangle”. This dress creates the illusion that she has wider hips. In some photos you can see the ‘corset’ on the dress. It seems like it has a built-in/sewed in wire bodice made of stiff material, to give the dress a definite shape and not hug the body of the wearer. The only bad thing is that it emphasized Kate’s skeletal frame: teeny-tiny waist and a huge lollipop head.

Her arms are not muscular and toned. Those “muscles” are her bones sticking out from her arm. There are other photos of her arms looking very thin and not toned at all. She is still very thin, and in some photos, she looks like a man with long hair, makeup, and jewelry. She’s become very masculine-looking recently and it takes away the dainty effect of her dresses. She must be overexercising next to her extreme dieting to have jacked up arms when she’s already too thin. That’s not healthy.

Hair is always boring and juvenile. What’s new? Afraid to show her scar? What scar? Who cares? She’s so insecure that she’d rather have her hair in curls all the time…like a child.

Jewelry is okay except for the necklace that looks like it could have been bought from Claire’s.

Makeup is better, too. Still heavy-handed, but at least it doesn’t look like it’s been applied with boxing gloves on. The eyebrows (scousebrow) look terrible, though, like she has caterpillars on her face.

Charisma is still zero. Nothing can be done about that. She doesn’t have it, and she never will.

Overall, one of her better appearances. I hope the money is worth it for this CUSTOM McQueen dress.

    • inthekitchen says:

Totally agree. I actually thought the dress had some built-in hip padding (I didn’t notice the corset) because there is no way she has that much of an hourglass shape.

Also agree with your comments about her arms – they look awful to me. I think she only looks “healthier” because the dress is padded!

I’m also so sick of her playing with her hair. She would have looked so much better with a loose chignon.

      • jamie says:

Yeah I’m not seeing the weight gain everyone else seeing either. She just looks like she has a fresh spray tan and I think that’s making her look a bit healthier (not that I’m saying she’s unhealthy).

  37. KsGirl says:

OK, I don’t mind Kate Middleton, but that hair is a problem for me. It’s just too long, too perfectly waved, too…too.

  38. Lairen says:

She looks gorgeous here. I loved the dress and actually really liked her hair, too. But I cut my hair short and am now trying to grow it out, so anybody with long hair kind of just makes me wistful and jealous.

  39. BELLA says:

She looks fantastic! Her jewels need to be more bling, and her hair should have been up!

    • sharylmj says:

      agree 100%

    • Luise says:

She can’t put her hair up because of the weave!!!! It will show. The hair is all fake.

      • Sofia says:

Then she must have been wearing weave since the 8th grade? She has the same wavy hair and it was actually wavier back then. This is what my frizzy hair looks like after more than half an hour of pulling it straight with a round brush and blowdryer. Anyone with a full head of wavy to curly hair can have hair like that.

  40. riri says:

    This dress is so beautiful!

I LOVE it and want one!

  41. ruby says:

Ok so… i love the dress. It’s lovely. Exquisite design. Really beautiful. It’s a pity that the top part is hidden by her hair. When you’re wearing such a pretty dress with a bustier neckline, you show it off ! You don’t hide it, especially not with this boring hairstyle that we have been seeing every single time for years. Keep us interested girl. A loose chignon would have been great here.

As for the makeup, she’s changed the eyeliner a bit and it’s an improvement. I still really dislike that awful orange glow though. Not classy.

And the jewellery… Very childish. I had similar flowery stuff when I was 8. Then I grew out of it.

I don’t find her arms toned as much as they are bony and too slim. But she seems to work out though, so we get the madonna effect : she manages to look skeletal yet overly muscular and masculine at the same time. Not elegant at all.

  42. Dani says:

She looks great. I’m not crazy about velvet, but I really can’t say anything bad about this ensemble.

  43. anne_000 says:

Btw, Daily Mail says that’s a $6,000 dress. Seems way over-priced.

  44. JulieM says:

Dress is quite nice and she looks good in it. For a two dimensional stick person!

  45. Lindy says:

Wow, that dress is gorgeous! She looks good (though I wish she’d do some different things with her hair as well).

  46. dahlia1947 says:

Gorgeous! And nice for her..she gets to hang out with all of those handsome men! 😉

  47. wunder says:

I LOVE the luxe of rich black velvet. She looks wonderful!

  48. BerMan says:

Bloody hell, the top photo she’s giving the screw you finger !! LoL naughty, naughty. Wonder is it towards the paparazzi, or a secret message to someone.

  49. Mourning the Death of Music says:

Perhaps she wears her hair the way William enjoys it the most?

But it is unfortunate she couldn’t pull it up, at least in a low bun, to showcase the beautiful necklace.

  50. eternalcanadian says:

She would have looked so much better with her hair up if she’s wearing that kind of jewelery. She’s still skinny as heck and I’m amazed she didn’t trip and fall on that too-long hem.

And yowzers, could she have raccoon eyes more! Just slapped a whole thick line all the way around, eh?

  51. Luise says:

I am so sick of this extremely boring woman that everybody makes so much over just because she’s married to Prince William. BORING, BORING, BORING.

    • gab says:

      I agree, Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
Her hair and face never change regardless of the event. Riding horses, going to hospital, charity events, parade, formal events, same, same, same! Another Kate-bot! 😉

  52. Wells says:

She looks good from afar close up you see early aging
The dress is cute but what is up with the matching purse

  53. Sofia says:

I think she looks great. But I wish sometimes I could dress her or tell her do something else with that hair! Love the dress, sort of a vintage look which I love. I have been wanting to see her in strapless and the necklace is nice with this particular dress. She has done plunging necklines so I’m sure she’s allowed to show cleavage guys. I find the necklace beautiful for her style which is more classic than trendy. I just wish she would maybe do a low chignon keeping it loose and with the side part. The eyeliner seemed more appropriate this time but it would be nice to see a softer eye. When she was younger the eyeliner was more natural but it also showed that little puff near the lashline and I don’t mean bags, it’s just the eyeshape. Her arms are actually toned, it’s not bones lol. She doesn’t look like a man! I’m not saying it’s jealousy but geez some people forget she’s human or something. He loves her and I’m sure she will improve on her public speaking.

  54. lucy2 says:

I like the dress. She does have nice hair, but something different would have been nice.
She does look a little less skeletal, but still thinner than she naturally would be, which will probably really start to age her in a few years.

  55. diana says:

I actually love the dress. And it fits her well. I agree that underneath of it there is a lot of wires and padding to give it the shape that Kate really doesn’t have anymore. Velvet works well for the weather for the dress….it is beautiful.

Again i don’t think she will wear her hair up with naked shoulders since her posture is terrible and would show like nothing else.

Again congrats for people the designed the dress, and for the first for stupid Waity not trying to use Queens’ curtains to make dresses out of them.

As far as thin, this woman screams anorexic.

  56. Mi says:

I actually think tht she looked lovely t this event. I’m not all that bothered by her hair since it has more or less become her thing and it suits her. And i don’t really mind the jewelerry either, I thin it’s nice but an updo would have showcased it a bit better. And as for her being thin or anorexic, there are several famous women who are all thiner and hell of alot skinnier then her that are being praised for how good they look.

  57. Lisa says:

I hate to make a Diana comparison, but it reminds me a little of the dress she wore when she danced at The White House with Travolta. She looks nice, and her body looks the same, only tanned. She has a nice figure.

  58. GoodCapon says:

There is an original version of the dress

    http://www.net-a-porter.com/product/163775

Notice how the see-through part was removed, the part that makes it wonderful and edgy, a McQueen trademark. Kate couldn’t wear a dress like that so they had to tame the dress. This is not a McQueen dress anymore, it’s a Sarah Burton dress now. Shame on Kate. Shame on Sarah Burton.
