Nerd implosion: Benedict Cumberbatch joins cast of ‘Star Trek 2’ – as the villain!

Here’s a magazine cover that I didn’t get a chance to use last week! Benedict Cumberbatch was the cover boy for The Sun’s magazine, The Sun TV Buzz. He was promoting Sherlock, obviously, which is currently airing in the UK – but we in America won’t get to see it until the summer, I believe, on PBS. So what’s this Cumberpost about then? Well, Cumberbatch just made a MAJOR career move, and surprisingly enough, it’s really, really smart. Guess it pays to be an asexual, sociopathic intellectual!

Yes, your beloved Cumberbatch (he’s my beloved as well) has signed on to the Star Trek sequel. Considering the Hot Guy Friday requests we still get for any actor involved with the JJ Abrams Star Trek, I think it’s safe to assume that many of you bitches are Trekkies, and that you will soon be initiated into the ways of the Cumberdong.

A little backstory at first – it’s thought that this second Star Trek film would involve some kind of remake/retelling of Wrath of Khan. Benicio Del Toro was loosely attached to play Khan, but he left the project in a huff a few weeks ago. The rumored controversy was about money, apparently. Benicio wanted to get paid A LOT and producers said no. So now people are wondering if this tall, asexual, odd-looking English boy is going to end up playing Khan? I don’t even know. People associated with the film are just saying that Benedict is going to play the “villain.”

So, why is this a good move? More exposure in America, of course. Benedict is surprisingly long in the tooth (he’s 35 years old), so it’s not like he’s ever going to be an “overnight success”. What he can have is more exposure in America, and a growing career as a character actor on both sides of the pond. Yay for more Benedict!

I just realized that he played the rapist in Atonement. Ugh, I hated him!

  2. brin says:

    I’m happy for you Kaiser.

  3. Tawny says:

I love him in Sherlock Holmes! The scenes with Adler were so steamy…so steamy! Sigh…

But, I much prefer him with dark hair.

  4. Anguishedcorn says:

“Long in the tooth” is 35… *weeping*

    • Kaiser says:

Long in the tooth… for an “overnight success” I said. He’s never going to be, like, Robert Pattinson. But he could be an Sir Ian McKellan.

  5. Kaboom says:

That casting makes good use of his slightly alien looks. However I loathe the hacky storytelling Orci and Kurtzman inflicted on the franchise.

  6. gloaming says:

Oh. My. God. I just had a nerdgasm!!!

    This is fantastic news!

  7. AZ says:

    OMG!!!!!!

I AM SO GOING TO SEE THE MOVIE!!!!

  8. Darla says:

    As the villain?…YES!

  9. starfish says:

    YASSSSS!!!!!!

  10. WOM says:

Yes. Yes! YES!! YES!!!!!! As a die-hard and shameless Trekkie, I’m so excited about this!!!!! However I don’t really see Cumberbatch as Khan! But he’d make an awesome Andorian!!!

And now I’ve used up my daily allotment of exclamation marks, so I’m going to go lie in a dark room and think naughty thoughts about Chris Pine. And Benedict!!!!

  11. jen says:

    Woo-hoo!

  12. birdie says:

God, I love this man! Good for him to take a role in a possible blockbuster, but Star Trek? Not so sure about that, but I only say that because I am not a trekkie (trekky?).
    Proud Cumberbitch here 🙂

  13. almond says:

I just saw the latest episode of Sherlock and he is just amazing. But the poor bastard cannot take a good picture to save his life. In motion, though… he is drool-worthy.

    • birdie says:

Yes, you need to see him in interviews and movies. He is stunning <3

      • Mi says:

Agree totally, he’s best in interviews and movies, he’s just kind of odd looking alot of pictures. But I think the last one, where he’s wearing the scarf is quite nice, I like it when he wears his hair like that, it kinda softens him.

  14. renee says:

You can see the new episodes of Sherlock online. Love that show and this man.

  15. embertine says:

    SALLY FORTH YE CUMBERBITCHES!!

This is great. If anyone was born to play an alien it is His Freaky Hotness.

  16. TheOriginalVictoria says:

I just wet Cumberwear! He looks so good with dark hair. And that pick of him with the Beiber hair, he looks like Thomas Gibson and the curly hair is reminiscent of Dennis Quaid’s Jerry Lee Lewis.

I would love to be the Cumbercane under his tree next year.

  17. Stacia says:

He’s cute in an odd way…the male version of Tilda Swinton.

  18. Delleah says:

Yay! I’m a total Trekkie nerd. My original choice to play villian was David Tennant tho. I will take Benedict as a happy 2nd choice.

There is one Trek villian who was created that I had wished they created years earlier as a main villian for the show or the other movies: Shakesperian klingon General Chang from The Undiscovered Country. I really hope they will be ultilizing this underused character for the new movies and I can see Benedict playing an awesome Chang.

  19. Gwen says:

This is potentially quite awesome 😀

  20. Mairead says:

Oh that first episode of the second series of Sherlock was magnificent (although I hated the ending). And I thought that it was nice of them to give us that scene of the Cumberbatch in the sheet 😉

The resident geeks might be interested to hear that Noel Clarke (who played the woefully underused Mickey Smith in Dr Who) is also confirmed for Star Trek. It’s not confirmed who his character will be, but the rumour is that it’ll be Worf.

  21. Reece says:

    YEEEAH!!!

Btw I agree with the above comments. He’s much better in motion than still photos.

  22. birdie says:

At first I didn’t really like him in photos, but I got so used to him because of the tumblr fandom, that I find him so hot in pictures now! He has an unique beauty, like a hot alien or.. a sexy shark. If you get what I mean ;D

  23. Lindy says:

OK, anyone who’s that attractive, with that insane nerdy-sexy vibe–playing Sherlock and on ST… Well, I think it’s time for me to start paying attention. 🙂

  24. Jilli says:

To each her own. This man, in my opinion is NOT attractive at all.

  25. Lady Lupton says:

Yay! The new season of Sherlock is great.

  26. miriam says:

Love him, so I will forgive him for making me sit through a Star Trek film just to watch him.

  27. Nancito says:

I’m in Canada and here the Sherlock Holmes series airs on BBC Canada, and it’s a great show with a bit of a modern spin to the Sherlock and Watson characters. My point is – maybe it’s already airing in the U.S. on the BBC channel there – if there is a BBC channel there.

  28. jamie says:

Good for Benedict, I can’t wait.

  29. Halfmydadsage says:

Even in Canada we are still behind. We need more Sherlock now.
And can we just say that he can’t photograph well on fly but when he models… he knows how to pose. I think I like the last photo too… The tinker tailor spy hair… although Sherlock hair is the best.

  30. Justyna says:

Your posts and comments made me watch interviews with him and I’m really surprised how much better he looks in motion. I’ve never watched Sherlock or any of his movies besides Atonement (but it was a long time ago and I don’t remember him at all) so I assumed that he always looks just like in the pictures and is completely not my type, even though I have a very strange taste in men and prefer rather those oddly-attractive than super hot. But I decided to check it since he has such a stong female fan-base and that difference is really shocking. Photos – alien with the weirdest eyes and mouth, motion – not hot but fairly attractive men with that unexplainable “something”. Now I can finally say that I understand your obsession with him.

  31. tan says:

Sherlock arrives here on PBS in May I believe. Watch him speaking in anything and you will fall in love with his voice alone- it is like chocolate butter. He is much better with his usual darker hair- I think the blonde highlights and coloring were for a couple roles. And yes- the poor guy does not do still photography well. He is very handsome, has great skin and great bone structure! He and Martin Freeman together are fantastic!

  32. tan says:

Did I mention Benny and Martin Freeman together are fantastic?! It bears repeating 😉

  33. Mel says:

BENEDICT, I admire him… so much. As a phenomenal actor, and intelligent and charismatic man.

In fact, I admire him so much that I need to look him up every day on google to know about any news regarding his life/career and dream of marrying him. D: Oh god, creeper status right there LOL.
