In yesterday’s links post, starring Rooney Mara as the corpse of your 1980s secretary, some of you yelled at me for “hating on” Rooney without reason. Those people seemed to ignore the fact that I praised her earlier in the day for her Paris premiere look, which was a cute, sparkly little Louis Vuitton dress that really suited her. The problem with Rooney is that she wants to be an “edgy” Fashion Girl, but her attempts, for the most part, are falling flat. There’s the obvious problem with her bangs (trauma), but there’s also a significant styling issue, especially with whoever is doing her makeup. She’s pale and child-like (like Lisbeth Salander). I wouldn’t mind if they did her all-goth, all the time. But they’re trying to make her into, like, Chloe Sevigny circa 2000. And it’s not working.
So these are some photos from last night’s Madrid premiere of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. Rooney (I almost called her Lisbeth there) wore this beigey Rodarte which… sucks. Let’s just say it. This dress is awful. I can’t even imagine this dress looking good on someone who wasn’t an anemic with a Spock haircut. On Rooney, it just makes her look like a wispy streak of cat vomit.
But that’s not even the worst!!!!! Rooney and Daniel Craig are in Berlin today for the next leg of GWTDT’s promotion, and Rooney decided to wear a BELLY SHIRT to the photo call. NO. JOKE. This is like a reject from Jennifer Aniston’s wardrobe on Friends, circa 1995. For the love of God, can this poor girl get a decent stylist? I just feel bad for her now. I want to bring her home and buy her a pantsuit and some lipstick.

Aw, I think she is cute in both outfits. She isn’t an old crone, she can dress young. The top and skirt are structured, otherwise they would not be good. That is all.

That dress is lovely – sorry Kaiser. I have NO idea what she was thinking with that belly-bearing get up. She was beautiful in Social Network. She’s starved herself now…but she does look exactly like her mom did at her age.
She does look extra skinny in these set of pictures (look at the BONY shoulders). I wonder if she started dieting again when they got the green light for the sequels?

The beige dress is pretty, but the grey crop top is giving me hives.
I think both outfits fit her style. She DOES need lipstick though.
I’m siding with Audrey. I call it “post-apocalyptic modernist feminine” and I like it. A nice change up from the usual. The fashions from the last few awards shows sucked the joy from the room. I’m over all the pseudo-prom dresses and shiny mid-length hair.
Kaiser – I sorta see your Chloe S. reference but think she’s trying for more of a Tilda Swinton. And she’s a neophyte – no one can touch sweet, odd Tilda. But she gets points for at least trying something different. She’ll find her stride.
If she dressed in slutty ultra short dresses like Kristen Stewart you’d call it edgy and cool.
Mara is wearing the newest fashion and it’s better then what the rest wears.
It’s not the dresses that are the problem IMO-it’s the terrible hairstyle and styling in general. Bleh.

And she hasn’t looked flawless. She’s trying to work a completely new look, and work being completely in the spotlight for the first time. It’s a lot for any young actress, and sometimes (a lot of the time) it doesn’t work.
That’s fine and understandable, but it has been in no way “flawless”. Are you a plant?

I think people are just annoyed with her and so they pick her look apart more. I don’t think we need to turn it into a cockfight though between girls always. Why can’t Mara be interesting while not calling another girl a slut for a comparison? I like how Stewart dresses too.
meh, I like the dress actually, just don’t like he bangs all slicked to the side like that. The second outfit is just silly and too jane jetson-ish. I tend to like he outfits, at least they are interesting, I just think she makes goofy faces for the camera.
The dress is gorgeous, but the color is totally washing her out. Speaking as a pale brunette myself, she will look great if she sticks to jewel tones like reds, purples, hot pinks, deep greens. This color does her no favors.

But I would like to add that I actually like the dress, but that it would have looked better on someone with a warmer skin tone. And if she were going to wear this anyway, then her makeup should have been super dramatic.
Isn’t Lisbeth Salander (described in the books) only childlike in size and shape?
In my recollection she dresses up punk goth and wears tons of make up. And oozees bad attitude.

Agreed! I love, and am jealous of, her shoe wardrobe!! She’s pretty, unique, and a breath of fresh air from blonde and overly-tanned generic starlets. Love her style.
i like the beige dress but the separate set is a crime.
I really don’t like her, so it’s hard to be objective, but I agree 100% with you: she would probably be able to rock the Edgy High Fashion Goth look. They ARE trying to make her be the Chloe Sevigny of 2000, even down to her hair in that first photo. It’s not going to happen, even with a different stylist. Not a huge fan of Chloe’s, but she has a certain look and a certain edge to her demeanor that Rooney will never have.
Also, those of us with that skin and hair coloring NEVER, EVER WEAR BEIGE. Got that, Rooney? EVER! We look bad in it.

Why doesn’t she smile/show more energy? Her very toned-down facial expressions in combination with her wardrobe (which I don’t really have a problem with) make her come across as always sleepy to me ….

The first problem is her hair color. It’s not naturally that dark, so it isn’t going to work with anything but goth clothes. Her clothes do not flatter her body, either. The top is the only thing that is okay, but the skirt is bad with it and the dress is simply awful and makes her look anorexic.
She should have gone for a head-to-toe look completely different from the one in the film. Then she’d appear as a transformational actress rather than someone who got so into their role they forgot to wash the dye out.
Someone give her a plate of FOOD!? I feel bad for her… She does need a new stylist… But i’m just imagining her throwing up food :S I can’t take it, i just ate food myself just now!

As for Mara, I actually think she pulls off the beige-y dress. Maybe because she’s got such an interesting face, gamine with good bone-structure and her skin looks really great.

A few accessories would be nice too…earrings, bracelets…anything to distract from that bowl cut #5. Sorry, I realize the hair is for the role, but it’s fugly as hell no matter how it’s styled.

All I see when I look at her on the RC is tons of effort. Sure they all ‘try’ but it’s particularly obvious on this girl. Pre-Dragon, this was not her style AT ALL. Suddenly, she’s all goth and edgy and we’re supposed to give her props for being the new dawn of fashion or something. Too contrived for me to be interested.
People’s styles change over time. Think how boring the world would be if they didn’t.

I think she looks okay. But my deal with her is her mouth. She is lucky to have gotten that role and if she doesn’t start watching what she says she’ll be lucky to get more.

out of these two outfits i like the “belly” top and skirt. I think it looks very cute and i like how she took that risk and it looks way better than any of those see-through/cutout dresses starlets usually wear.
I’d like to know who’s styling her. Some choices have been a miss, but others have been really great to see during this promotional tour. I like that Rooney is up for trying a new style. I’ve seen old photos and in those she just looked like a typical young actress, almost a Natalie Portman look-alike and IMO that’s worse than any fashion risk she’s been taking on with this new look. I support it.

I don´t know, I like the first dress nor the arms position and the eye look. Nobody can sport the second, seriously, and pretend that it´s your best choice. My question, was she like that before the GWTDT or she is too much into the script?

I think if it were a different colour, That dress would be fine. I like the short black skirt, but not with that top. That top looks like a Sports Bra.

I’m starting to feel bad that Kstew gets flack for never smiling on the RC but Rooney is getting a pass for some reason. Probably because Daniel Craig also has a problem smiling for the cameras so they make a pair.
Some of the comments on this website are silly and immature from people. Some people are only expressing their opinion and are getting pure hate for saying it. So what if people did not like the movie or don’t like Rooney Mara or find her attractive? Is that a bad thing?
Rooney Mara is trying to be SO HARD like her charcter in real life. Maybe thats why she is comming off as rude and snotty in interviews. But she needs to behave like a professional , she is 26 years old for god sakes not some teen star. Those teens could get away get away for behaving like that but not her. At 26 people exepct you to talk back like an adult. Adults don’t not go off putting down their former jobs and employers , if they do , they say it in a manner that doesn’t sound mean or offensive. I bet she offended the people who worked on Law and Order and Elm Street.

The reason why people don’t like her is because she keeps badmouthing her past roles. Once is okay but if you keep doing it so many times people will think less of you. Yes she does seem a bit childish. Just look at what she said before .

No one will cast you as Juliet Capulet as your first role! Everyone starts off small , gets casted in ridiculous movies but then you get the good roles later. What if she doesn’t get an Oscar nom and says ” Oh they snubbed me ,so that’s why they didn’t give me a nomination” or ” The Acadamy is stupid , they didn’t understand my acting that’s why I didn’t get nominated for one.” I would imagine her response to be like that.
Rooney is not likeable , which is why people will not be watching her future movies if she continues to talk like this.She is getting to be like James Franco , who talks however he likes. He has already lost some fans because of what comes out of his mouth. She doesn’t have any fans to begin with but she does have haters already so she had come off to a bad start.

Actors are the next level of the phrase ‘seen but not heard (in terms of unscripted opinions)’. As soon as actors open their mouths on politics and their personal gripes about their previous work (for which they accept impressive pay checks, that average workers will never get), they are seen as whingers and assholes.

Not sure why so much people are bent out of shape. She’s has said nothing wrong in my book. Who cares about some role on SUV? Its not like she said she enjoys killing small puppies.
Her performance in the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was incredible. she looks very beautiful in the top photo and the dress is very pretty.
Some people here take her words very personally. Some even go as far as to project their own negative feelings onto what she says in some perfectly nice and polite interviews she’s done. I try not to engage them directly, because in the end, it is all a matter of personal opinion. I prefer to most often bypass the ignorant, misinformed comments and just post positive things about her, because i actually like the girl. I obviously don’t know her personally. None of us do, so i judge her only on her style and acting, which i think are both superb.

In the halter top and skirt I think she has a ballerina, Audrey Hepburn vibe. The halter is totally nonsexual on her…not in a bad way, just looks kind of dainty rather than sexy.

Extactly. She is new in this industry and you don’t see other newcomers dissing old roles they had before. She hasn’t been nominated for an Oscar yet , so why so much ego ? I don’t even see anyone hiring her execpt for David Fincher. And this movie is not doing well at the box-office. She should learn how to talk and present herself. Maybe watch interview tapes of actors like Daniel Radcliffe or Elijah Wood , who have had succesful movie franchises , played the lead role and know how to talk , not to mention more fame than her. Shows that she has let the fame go to her head.
Speaking of James Franco , he likes to play the blame game .I read that he blamed the writers of the oscars for his terrible performence as a host. I hope this girl doesn’t blame Finhcer if her movie flops big time . She has already called her role on Law & Order stupid and afwul , same with the Nightmare on Elm Street role too.
