Michelle Williams in Prada, with new, darker hair: gorgeous, cute or boring?

Michelle Williams was on hand at the Palm Springs International Film Festival too, joining the likes of Brangelina, George Clooney and Charlize Theron. Michelle won the Desert Palm Achievement Award for her work as Marilyn Monroe in My Week With Marilyn (which I will discuss in a moment). First, lets’ talk about Michelle’s look. The mini-dress (or cocktail dress) is Prada. It’s cute… but I’m not in love with it. I would have liked to have seen a version of the dress that was all-beaded, you know? I don’t think the skirt is as special as it wants to be, but the beaded top part is lovely. Michelle has also (finally) darkened her hair. This thrills me to no end – I really disliked the too-white-blonde hair she had been sporting ever since she played Marilyn. This reddish-brunette suits her coloring so much better, and she looks less like a Mia Farrow-wannabe.

As for My Week With Marilyn, I finally saw it a few weeks ago, and I have to admit, I was impressed. I still think Michelle’s voice work as Marilyn was hit-or-miss, but overall, her performance was noteworthy, and I wouldn’t hate it if she was nominated for a Best Actress Oscar. I would hate it if she won, though. Kenneth Branagh – who was on hand at Palm Springs to honor Michelle – was really very good at Laurence Olivier, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he got an Oscar nomination as well. But I have to admit that my favorite part of the film was Dame Judi Dench. She only had a few scenes, and she owned them, beautifully. On the whole, the film can get a little bit cloying and eye-roll-inducing (it wants to be a great love story, but really it’s a portrait of a screwed up movie star), but the period details are fantastic, and it’s worth watching for the actors’ performances.

She looks beautiful. Such gorgeous skin. I think the colour is perfect but she could do with just a tiny bit more length on the cut.

Something’s going on with her cheek/chin area. Looks off. She’s pretty, though the eyeliner is nearing Waity-territory.

    • Sasha says:

I think the eyeliner looks pretty soft and natural on Michelle. Waity’s mistake is lining all the way round the eyes, including the inner corner, which closes them up and gives her the raccoon look. She should just stick to the outer half like Michelle and she’d look a LOT less squinty!

She has strong face features. She needs long soft hair.

    She looks lovely.

The only suggestion I would make is that the award should be a little bigger so the recipient could use it as an umbrella stand or hat rack.

Yep, color is great .. her skin is TDF. But I prefer her with long hair or even medium length .. as she gets older.. this cut will make her look older than she is.

She doesn’t have to grow it Kardashian long but maybe to the shoulders? or Reese W length?

The dress is unfortunate for her tummy when she doesn’t even have one!

I think the color is very complimentary and it even looks nice with the accents on her dress. I would be careful not to be matchy-matchy a la Katy perry, but I think this works.

She can really carry off this look, especially now that her hair color is a million times better than that hideous blonde was. She’s very attractive and her hair is a large part of that.

The proportions of that dress and the colors work on her. I like the shoes she wore with it.

I LOVE the shade of lipstick she’s wearing – it’s perfect!

    Overall, beautiful and elegant

I think I’d like her hair better if it was either a richer shade of auburn or a more striking strawberry; that color just looks washed out to me. And somebody needs to tell her to quit with the demure lipped smile already, it’s getting old. Other than that I think she looks great.

Michelle Williams is flawless, IMO; you could dress her up in a paper bag and she’d still look amazing. That being said, I wouldn’t have picked Prada for her. I just think that label does nothing for women’s figures and usually produces glorified muumuus. M.W. still looks good though.

The is the best she’s looked in a while to me.I love the hair color and the top part of the dress.I too would have loved to see the dress completely beaded and with a sheath style bottom.I don’t hate the bottom of the dress except for the “poof” effect at her hips.

  34. YvetteW says:

I like her hair color very much. The fabric (and underlining) are too thick on the bottom half of the dress. It makes it look a bit bottom heavy. She is tiny so it’s not that bad.

Basically everyone present to receive an award at the Palm Spring Fest (Williams, Brad, Clooney, Woodley, McCarthy, Dujardin, Bejo, etc) are hustling HARD to clinch that Oscar nomination. I prefer those others that aren’t working it at this stage of the game, it makes them seem less desperate.

    • shontay says:

I don’t see anything wrong with people “hustling” for awards or nominations (depending on how far they go). This is their work. Their movies don’t make loads of money, so this is how their success is measured.

Report this comment as spam or abuse

      • podzol says:

I wish all the best to the small independent movies who need all the visibility it can get in order to get better box-office numbers. (in fact, I rarely go to the cinema, but if I do, I often choose to give my $ to indie movies).

But we are in January, 1 week before Oscar ballots need to be turned in and all these movies have already premiered a long time ago. Most of the present people are already heavily tipped to be to nominated and their studio (especially Weinstein) will make sure that the Academy does not forget them. There is absolutely no other point for the Palm Springs Fest than this (much like the Hollywood Film Awards).

If anything, underrated actors who gave terrific performances should get that chance to appear there, like Shannon, Bichir, Harrelson, Fassbender, Binoche, Dunst and Paquin – I would find it more legitimate. I guess my annoyance is not directed at the actors, but more towards the process that enables this kind of favoritism/oscar-prognostication.

    • jin says:

It’s true, podzol. This is all set up by their publicists and management to keep their Oscar hype up. I would feel silly accepting an award and giving this sentimental speech when it’s all part of the campaign game and has nothing to do with merit. So if any of these people-like George Clooney who recently claimed he doesn’t campaign anymore-try to act like they don’t care about awards or Oscar campaigning they are full of crap.

Michelle looks gorgeous. The short hair really suits her. Not crazy about the dress, though. It’s starting to look like everything else she’s worn.

I gotta disagree on Marilyn, though. I’ve seen all the contenders for best actress and Michelle is my choice. She is phenomenal. She made me care about Monroe when I never did before. She’s got her name on an Oscar whether it’s this year or somewhere down the line.

I kind of like that too. Michelle Williams is kind of mysterious. You get the sense she isn’t like Sandra Bullock or Julia Roberts who try to bombard you with their personalities or Angelina Jolie who has talked about her cutting and her love life. She’s kind of distant in front of the media.

I like it better, she’s slightly less of a FarrowGamineThing this way. I’m not saying she wasn’t gorgeous before. But the darker hair plus the cute but almost-mature dress is even more of a win.

  54. Kosmos says:

The color of the dress in general looks perfect with her hair and coloring, but otherwise, I feel the dress is too closed up looking on the bodice, and I do not like the fullness at the waist kind of look on anyone. I would like the dress completely redone. Do not like the hairstyle and would prefer her as a blonde in the shorter hair she previously had. She has very fine hair, so she can’t keep it long. I just remember seeing her in more flattering hairstyles, but this color is also appealing. Otherwise, I really like her as an actress and a personality overall.
