Christina Aguilera: “I don’t weigh myself – it’s all about how I feel in my clothes”

Isn’t it amazing how Christina Aguilera looks so much prettier when she’s not wearing insane, drag queen clown makeup? Isn’t it wonderful that someone sober did her makeup for this Marie Claire photo shoot? She looks so different! Anyway, Christina covers the February issue of Marie Claire, likely to promote The Voice, but also to talk about body image and her divorce and all of that stuff. You can read the full piece here, and here are some highlights:

Christina on her year after filing for divorce (basically, all of 2011): “That was a rough year,” Aguilera admits, shaking her head. “Between my divorce and the other things I went through, a lot happened. It’s hard for anyone to go through that in public. But when you’re a celebrity and under a microscope, it’s 58 million times harder. I grew an even thicker skin after that hard year.”

On her weight gain: Lately, she’s been subjected to cruel tabloid headlines about her fluctuating weight. (“I was never that fat,” crowed Kelly Osbourne on E! Fashion Police.) Aguilera’s response, she says, is to ignore the static. “I’ve been through my highs, I’ve been through my lows; I’ve been through the gamut of all things in this business. Being too thin. Being bigger. I’ve been criticized for being on both sides of the scale. It’s noise I block out automatically. I love my body. My boyfriend loooves my body. My son is healthy and happy, so that’s all that matters to me.”

She’s confident in her skin: “I have certain physical features that I favor over others. We all have our areas,” she says. “When I worked on Burlesque, I lost so much weight that I was too skinny. I don’t weigh myself — it’s all about how I feel in my clothes. What looks good on one person might not look good on another body type. I happen to be very confident in my own skin. It takes time to get to that place, but it’s all about embracing yourself and your body.”

On “the white-blonde Betty Boop routine”: “It is called show business,” Aguilera says.

[From Marie Claire]

Some of you dislike that Christina’s weight gain has gotten notice and criticism, and to her credit, I think Christina handles the criticism very well and with a lot of class, perspective and professionalism. Personally, I don’t think people would be talking about it so much if A) Christina dressed for the figure she has now and B) Christina didn’t seem so unhealthy. Like, she doesn’t look like she just has a problem with French fries. She looks like she drinks heavily and has a drunken-clown-makeup addiction.

    photoshop helps.

dont get me wrong, i agree she’s very pretty naturally. but toning out the bronzer stained faux locks really helps.

    • Leigh says:

Helps? It’s the one doing all the work in this shoot..

That’s not to say I think she should be criticized… I think her weight is her business and hers alone. The key is dressing for your body. Not obsessing over how much you weigh.

    • Lantana says:

Photoshop helps? I’d say Adobe should buy the rights to these photos for Photoshop ads!

  2. Bite me says:

So pretty… She doesn’t need all that war paint she normally wears

  3. lucy2 says:

She’s really pretty, but makes herself look so trashy most of the time. I don’t get it.
If she’s happy and confident, that’s great, but still, dress in a flattering way, no matter what size. Her get-ups are just embarrassing.

  4. TheOriginalKitten says:

She looks so much better with the toned-down make-up. I’m not into criticzing chicks for their weight-whether they be overweight or underweight. And I think the “she gained it in an unhelathy way!” is just a cop-out people use so they can get a free pass to call her fat. In my opinion, if she’s fine with her weight then that’s all that matters. If she gained it from boozing her face off on the weekends then that’s fine too (although I hope her kid isn’t suffering from her partying).

  5. katie says:

agreed. her weight doesn’t bother me, her clothing does.

her outfit for this shoot is the right way to wear the fishnets/corset/jacket look she sported earlier this year.

    • Happy21 says:

      My sediments exactly!

I am happy if she is happy in body but she needs to dress for her body. I have a really hard time seeing people not dressing for their body. Everyone no matter shape and size has the ability to look smokin’ hot if they just dress for their body!

  6. Anna says:

Wow it’s amazing what photoshop can do!

    • partypnt says:

Don’t all magazines photoshop their stars though?

At least the photoshop was subtle and she doesn’t look like an alien, like it happens with toher stars…

  7. partypnt says:

She looks great and it’s good that she doesn’t take the criicism to heart.

  8. cmc says:

“I don’t weigh myself — it’s all about how I feel in my clothes. What looks good on one person might not look good on another body type.”

Uhhh, how did the reporter keep a straight face after she said that? That is EXACTLY her problem. Her body is still beautiful and I think she’s far from fat, but everything she wears these days is totally wrong for her new body.

    • Tapioca says:

Well, quite. She used to be the girl with the amazing voice, now she’s the one who doesn’t understand “dressing to your shape”.

Christina has far too much talent to be the girl whose weight we all monitor – we have the Kardashians for that. I just wish she’d look at the outfit in the bottom pic, add a pair of trousers and open her mouth to SING rather than spout this recycled body pride crap she doesn’t actually believe.

  9. Minky says:

I’m down with the bigger figure. I’m down with ignoring all the shouting and hoopla making about it. I’m down with her doing what works for her and what makes her feel good about herself. My only complaint is WHY DOESN’T ANYONE WEAR PANTS ANYMORE?!!

I’m over the bodysuits and leotards already! Find some well tailored pants, skirts, shorts, whatever! We don’t always need to see everyone’s underwear, pantyhose, tights, or garter belt lines.

    Ok, rant over.

    • partypnt says:

I agree, popstars have been wearing bodysuits since like 2005, can’t they find a new costume?

  10. Guesty says:

Her makeup is so beautiful here. I hope her makeup artists pay attention and just start doing her this way, no matter what Christina requests.

She’s always seemed rather insincere to me, so her claims about feeling so great in her own skin seem like more of the same. I don’t think people are picking on her for being fat or heavier – they don’t like her, and she doesn’t give people a lot to like. She’s amazingly ungracious and catty (Gaga, Britney), and this body-positive horseshit doesn’t erase her own past meanness (Osborne, Britney). She’s fake-seeming, and once you spray that down with wall primer and clown-whore lips and lashes, what do you expect?

In a world where Melissa McCarthy and America Ferrara exist, Christina Aguilera is going to be held up as a hero for women of average or larger size? Please.

  11. ThatBoyLuke says:

I think she looks really pretty, she probably doesn’t love her body but she feels like she has to say that to make people believe she’s so strong. Maybe if everybody wasn’t so negative towards her she wouldn’t feel that way, the same with her make-up, some people use it like armour.
Maybe she did drink too much after her divorce but i can’t remember the last (non holliday related) time she was drunk so maybe we should cut her some slack, anyway yeah she looks great in this shoot and i’m looking forward to her new single “Love your body” 🙂

  12. Delleah says:

I hope Christina tones down the makeup from this point on. She looks so much better with a bare minimal face.

  13. sasha says:

    oink oink

  14. irishserra says:

What about that hair? It’s time to buzz it off and start over. It looks like a bit nest of straw atop her head.

  15. Shiloh says:

i agree it’s not really the weight gain, it’s that she generally looks unhealthy. it would be one thing if she put on some weight but seemed healthy and happy. despite all she says about how happy she is, i don’t really buy it. she always looks miserable. her outfits, hair and makeup choices are less than flattering to say the least. maybe she was too thin in burlesque, but her tiny frame doesn’t handle all this extra weight well either. she needs to find a healthy middle ground.

  16. Cathy says:

I think she looks good in those pictures, the makeup artists did a good job. The photoshop artists did a good job also

  17. novaraen says:

So much prettier without that damn bright red lipstick she always wears!

Oh and yeah…photoshop did wonders on these photos.

  18. whatevs says:

you don’t weigh yourself? we can tell..

  19. hazeldazel says:

i’d just be happy if she’d keep the bronzer out of her platinum blonde weave from now on…

  20. Happy21 says:

Her statement about not weighing herself is exactly me! I don’t weigh myself unless I HAVE to. If my clothes are fitting and I’m not a lumpy mess I’m good. Weight is just a number. Everyone I know who regularly weighs themselves is obsessed with weighing themselves and the number that is reflected on the scale. I’m an obsessive person so I can see that happening to me. I don’t own a scale so I’m not tempted.

Oh yes and I, too, think she looks so much better without the spackle on her face!

  21. skuddles says:

Thank goodness for spandex eh Xtina?

  22. Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

Seeing this makes me weep for wasted potential.

-Oh, that she would permanently retire that menses-coloured oil slick rolled across her mouth

    -Explore trousers

-Lose her peroxide in the divorce

    -Embrace water

-Be caught in the centre of a Mystic Tan (or as I call it, ‘Agent Orange’) spray embargo and have *that* particular colour drain from her cheeks.

-Develop a condition wherein she breaks out in spots if she leaves the house without a bra

    -Inherit a turtleneck factory

-Drop her ‘sober fighter’ toy boy who contributes to her sadly jaundiced complexion by supplying the funnel to her bottle

And she could look pretty danged fetching.

Her personality and well-documented gracelessness displayed whilst amongst other humans is a whole other barrel of monkeys, so I can’t even touch that.

  23. blc says:

She is so happy with her body! Yeah, right. How long before she is announced as the new face of Weight Watchers or Jenny Craig of whoever? Guaranteed that will happen. The female celebrities who get fat always talk a big game about loving their bodies (See: Jennifer Love Hewitt) until they are able to lose the weight. I also don’t see how Xtina could possibly think she looks good unless she is looking into a distorted mirror. She looks awful.

    • Dani says:

My thoughts exactly. I think that if she were presented with the choice of remaining at her current weight or going back to her former weight without having to put in any effort, she would choose the latter.

There are so many bigger celebrity women who proclaim to be happy with their weight but their actions speak otherwise.

  24. Feebee says:

“it’s all about how I feel in my clothes”

so you feel squeezed a lot of the time?

  25. Camille says:

I wish she would do her makeup like this all the time, she looks great in these pics- photoshop or no photoshop.

  26. jj200 says:

Make up looks good in this photoshoot but she always looks like a tranny wearing too much make up.

  27. Nikki Girl says:

“My boyfriend loves my body”…more like your boyfriend loves your money and the fact that life is just play-time now, he longer has to work or do anything for a living.

  28. Ana says:

God all these comments are so bitter and mean spirited. If you don’t have anything good and constructive to say then don’t say anything at all. Anyway, Christina looks great I’m glad she is happy. Love her voice and can’t wait for the next album.

  29. CaptinObvious says:

    It’s called CeleBITCHY for a reason! =)

  30. truthteller says:

I think she’s tying to be Mariah Carey. She always said she looked up to her.

  31. EmmaStoneWannabe says:

I think she looks like Julianne Hough in the second pic. These are very flattering shots of her.

  32. Chrissy says:

The not weighing yourself and using your clothes as a guage is a technique mentioned by many fitness experts, such as Denise Austen. However, that really only works if your like us normal people who have a limited number of clothes and therefore frequently wear the same things so that we can tell when there is a change in the way they feel if we gain weight. I don’t think it’s working for her. She probably has new clothes all the time. That said, I don’t really think her weight is a problem. I don’t expect people to stay the same age, weight, etc as they get older. I do wish she would tone down some of the trashy getups, because she can look really pretty otherwise.

  33. Kimberly says:

um I saw that burlesque movie and she wasn’t too skinny, she was normal sized for her frame. Bigger than she was when she was younger.

When it comes down to it, she’s eating poorly, she’s an alcoholic who drinks extra calories, and she doesn’t work out. Period. Not a mystery why she got fat.

My problem isn’t that she is fat, it’s that she dresses in tacky materials that don’t flatter her fat ass, then tries to pretend that there is nothing wrong.

Bitch you got bad taste! That IS what’s wrong!

  34. MAMAKOWALSKA says:

Lighter make-up looks great on her…. I think some women just have a hard time seeing themselves differently as they grow older, regular women and especially famous ladies who perhaps get into a time warp as to when they were in their prime.

It doesn’t mean they aren’t still in their prime. It can all be their prime if you find a way to age gracefully and with dignity and that includes age appropriate clothes and make-up.

She may find her new groove, give her a little time.

  35. Paula says:

    She is full of shit!
