Kristen Stewart named the new face of Balenciaga perfume: smart move?

I talk a lot of smack about Kristen Stewart, some of which she deserves, some of it she might not. But at the end of the day, I do think she’s a pretty girl, and I think she’s making some interesting career moves. This one took me by surprise, though – Kristen was just named the new face of Balenciaga’s fragrance for women. K-Stew will the the official lip-biter for a perfume! This is her first endorsement deal – apart from all of the Twilight crap, of course – and Balenciaga is an interesting choice for her. I think if Kristen had been brought in to work with a more mainstream company like, say, Lancome, there would be a backlash, just as there was with Emma Watson and her Justin Bieber haircut. But to sign on to front a perfume for the not-so-mainstream Balenciaga? It’s a surprisingly smart move.

Last year, Kristen Stewart’s fans watched her transform from a grungy tomboy to a glamorous style star who rocked gorgeous gowns on the red carpet and posed for the covers of W and Vogue.

And the 21-year-old Twilight star just landed her first high profile fashion gig as the face of the newest Balenciaga fragrance for women.

“Balenciaga has always stood out to me,” Stewart told WWD. “Even when I first began to consider fashion and admittedly rarely knew the brand I was wearing, I always recognized and loved Balenciaga. It feels full circle to be involved with something that spoke to me then and of course continues to excite me now. The brand is just cool. That’s the way it is. I feel drawn to it. It provokes on a number of levels. It isn’t afraid or contrived. It hits a very cool balance, always. Always pretty undeniable.”

The fragrance campaign is expected to be launched this fall. In the meantime, Stewart is enjoying some rare downtime after shooting three films in 2011 (On the Road, Snow White and the Huntsman and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2).

[From Us Weekly]

We get it, honey. It’s COOL. You would never associate with anything less than COOL. Damn, do you remember what that was like? I remember being, oh… 15 years old. And everything was about being cool. You would just die if you ever did anything uncool. Coolness was the ultimate goal in life. And Kristen’s bringing that hipster cred (for real?) to Balenciaga.

I’m including the Snow White & the Huntsman trailer again, just because I think this was another smart move for K-Stew, career-wise. I’m actually looking forward to seeing this.

She really is a very pretty girl but quite awkward…which I kinda find endearing.

  2. Lolaluvsu2 says:

Great…there goes my love for Balenciaga. What’s next? Blake Lively for Lanvin? Ugh.

  3. Sunshine says:

I LOVE her! I am really excited about this. I’ll buy it just b/c I like her. She is awkward and it is very endearing. She’s learning as she grows, and I don’t get all the hate.

  4. Cathy says:

I’ve never seen any of the Twilight movies, they just don’t interest me. She looks kind of bitchy all the time, like she’s got permament pms.

  5. Reece says:

Obviously someone has gotten over their abhorrence to fame.

She photographs well when styled well. In print and not talking. Curious to see what the campaign will look like.

  6. CTgirl says:

Isn’t this the girl that essentially shuns basic grooming in her everyday life? Yeah, that’s who should be selling perfume.

  7. UKHels says:

I may in a minority of one but I love her face

    • Monkey Jim says:

No, I like her too. I think many people can’t forget that godawful Joan Jett haircut & attitude she had a while ago. Think she’s grown up & she interests me now. I’ve gone full circle as she used to make me cringe. On other hand, going off Sparkles big time, think he might be a bit of a chump and a tad disingenuous (runs & hides with my tinfoil hat on)

I like her for some reason and I do think she is making interesting, good career choices (or that she has a really good team behind her). I always cut her a bit of a break for a couple of reasons. I remember reading on Lainey one time about how some insane twi-hards organized a letter writing campaign to try and bar her from one of Rob Pattinson’s premieres. There are a lot of psychos out there who hate this chick because she is most likely banging (still haven’t ruled out mutual bearding) their fantasy guy. I also think some of the backlash is unfair. I know several celebs who made comments similar to the “rape” thing (Natalie Portman compared meat eating to rape, Johnny Depp with the fame, Mila Kunis with the paps) but none of them received quite the backlash that she did and at least she apologized. I believe she and Pattinson will make it and Lautner will end up with a supporting action role type of future.

  9. Fay says:

She is the ultimate hypocritical hipster. She is so anti-Hollywood, so different than all those famewhoring actresses yet she signs for big fantasy flicks, wants another trilogy out of it and now like Blake Lively signs for a label.

So it will smell like weed, smoke, sweat and more drugs. Yuck. She is so dirty.

    • lolab says:

meh, I’m not going to hold someone accountable for idiotic things they said in their high school years. All 18 year olds swear they’ll never sell out. Hopefully she’s grown up enough to realize that’s all bullshit.lol

    • Lola says:

She has never been anti hollywood. She simply doesn’t put on like many of her peers. Also she doesn’t try to be a “celeb”.
A person isn’t a famewhore bc they sign an endorsement deal. We don’t call Blake a famewhore for representing Chanel, we call her a famewhore for pimping her relationships and mundane activities on a reg. basis.

  10. lolab says:

She’s pretty, but not perfect and a little left of center.

That works well with Balenciaga’s vibe. The first time I ever noticed her fashion wise was in a Balenciaga ensemble, looking like Joan Jett in a Punkish catholic school girl outfit. This could be a good fit for both parties.

  11. Mitch Buchanan Rocks says:

It would be interesting to read the ingredients on this Balenciaga poison but due to trade secret laws the ingredients don’t have to be listed. Modern society’s overly scented parfumed fragrant obsession is resulting in a lot of health issues for people.

  12. Lola says:

She’s perfect for Balenciaga. Charlotte Gainsbourg who is their other representative has a similar image as Kstew. However, Kstew has a much more classic prettiness about her than Charlotte.
I’m actually really excited about this and the other projects young miss Stewart has on her plate.

    • Carolyn says:

I agree with the fit. They’d better get the styling & photo right. She needs to break free from Bella. Balenciaga do nice perfumes – one of my work friends wears the Charlotte one and I notice it each time she sprays it (not in a weird way!)

  13. Emily says:

Totally unrelated, but did you guys see the story about Heather Locklear that came out this morning?

  14. kieslowski says:

I really think this is a perfect fit, both Balenciaga and Kristen will benefit. Cannot wait to see the campaign.

  15. Ludmila says:

She is f–king beautiful, but there’s something on your face that makes it interesting, that makes you want to look that combines novamente.Acho Balenciaga, you look at the clothes, is not especially pretty, but you atrai.Na last picture she has a Marion Cotillard type vibe.

  16. Ro says:

It was great that she kept the whole deal under wraps until it was ready to be announced. How many starlets would have announced it the minute their name was thrown in for consideration? So good for her, I’m definitley looking forward to the campaign.

  17. darai says:

I like that she’s not tweaking her imperfections, like her teeth. And I like that she’s not afraid to be papped without makeup, and that she doesn’t stuff her bra. I don’t understand why other women hate on her for not being vain enough to put on heels and facepaint to go pump gas in your car. Weird.

    • CTgirl says:

I don’t think anyone expects heels and makeup to go pump gas. Just a shower and using a hairbrush 😉

      • darai says:

thus my point. Cause she doesn’t don heels and makeup 24/7, and cause she is papped often in private moments like pumping gas, she looks like a normal girl. Somehow, looking normal, then gets twisted into her being dirty and greasy? Girls are eachothers worst enemies.

      • CTgirl says:

@darai, I honestly don’t know women or teenaged girls who go to the gas station, grocery story, etc. looking greasy and unwashed like KS. Clean is normal. Greasy and unwashed is just sad.

  18. ccoop says:

Smuggy McBitchface for Balenciaga! Umm, no thanks. I’ll wear some other kind of stinkwater.

  19. machiavelli says:

If Balenciaga is about hipster wannabe, constipated faced, ungrateful, smug, condescending….then, yeah.

  20. Sasha says:

She looks like a mini Eva Green in the last picture. Perfect for Balenciaga 🙂

  21. Angb says:

Love her. Can’t wait to see the new campaign.

  22. slimazz says:

18&19 lol same person Go kstew i wish you well you take a lot of crap but i like you

  23. LittleDeadGrrl says:

She’s very beautiful in my opinion but too awkward to endorse anything. I just can’t see the commercial or photographs being anything but awkward. They are gonna try and make her look all grown up and she will still look about 15 playing dress up

  24. Sab says:

She is very pretty, but doesn’t have strong bone structure. It will be interesting to see how they “Glam” her up. She looks good without makeup. I hope for minimal Photoshop.

  25. Balenciaga is not a no-name outfit.

  26. Kim says:

I thought Kristin (from her own mouth) hated publicity and shyed away from anything other than pure acting – bleck!!!

How full of crap is she “Balenciaga just always stood out to me.” Oh please if Chanel offered you a deal you would say same thing about them.

Plus she is ugly as all get out. Who wants to see her untalented mug anywhere.

  27. Anne says:

Balenciaga, why, why, why? There are so many models who actually know how to work this and you choose… her. Sigh.

  28. Str8Shooter says:

I suppose if Balenciaga is going for the Permanent BitchFace look, they found their skank.

  29. lisa says:

Why so rude people its a job , so very easy for folks to talk smack behind a computer..
Im sure some of you have kids ,maybe , i don’t really know.
I would hope that you would not want folks saying negative things about them especially if they did not know them.

really people , give the negativity a rest…

  30. whatevs says:

the chin-girl strikes again! lol i don’t get the appeal. i thought around the 1st movie she was pretty, but idek what happened, she looks so pale and fug and boyish nowadays. maybe it’s the “oh i so don’t care for fame” act. somebody once wrote that winona ryder invented that face that kstew has been doing in all twilight movies lol

  31. Mi says:

I really like her for some reason (strange considering that I loathe anything Twilight) and I find her really attractive and beautiful, it has to be that awkwardness that she has, it makes her endearing as others have noted. Ans the fact that she never looks “perfect”, she actually seem human!
