Tilda Swinton, Sarah Michelle Gellar & Jodie Foster: who wore blue best?

Tilda Swinton could do no wrong last night at the Globes, and she chose an ice-blue skirt suit designed by her friend Haider Ackermann, who Tilda swearscan read my mind about what I want to wear.” Indeed, this outfit looks like it was made just for the occasion. The metallic jacket flowed so well into the skirt, which was just feminine enough with a teensy bit of a train. Tilda’s poufy new-wave hair went quite well with the outfit, and her makeup was understated but still polished enough to make sure that her facial features didn’t disappear. Tilda looked almost exquisite during the closeups while Meryl Streep accepted the Globe for Best Actress in a Drama. Even though Tilda lost out on the actual award, she just looked so happy for her friend yet grateful to even be mentioned on camera. She is such a boss.

Sarah Michelle Gellar wore a flouncy, big-bustled Monique Lhuillier gown and received mixed reactions last night on Twitter, where some described the look as an ill-advised attempt to bring back tye dye. During the E! red carpet coverage, Sarah mentioned that her two-year-old helped her choose the dress, which explains things well enough, but I absolutely loved this dress on her regardless of the reasons for wearing it. This look is different and adventurous, and the simple high ponytail says “youthful” without translating into “desperate to look young.”

However, Sarah Michelle’s jacket that she added for the Warner Brothers party quite nearly ruined the effect.

Jodie Foster went with a far less adventurous vibe by choosing a teal Armani gown with the same old boring, side-parted bob that she’s sported for the past decade. Jodie’s makeup is appropriate and the earrings are cute, but she could’ve jazzed things up with a sparkly necklace. Of particular note during the opening moments of the show itself was how well Jodie handled (with a very enthusiastic two thumbs up) Ricky Gervais’ joke about The Beaver. Then I realized she was just defending Mel Gibson again. Ugh.

Okay, I usually love Tilda, but that pouf on the top of her head looks like a hat! I think she looks more elegant when she just has her hair slicked back.

Sarah MG – I love her dress. It’s gorgeous, but I know the majority probably won’t agree with me. Where is Freddie Prinze Jr.? Did they split up because I never see him with her at all anymore?

Jodie Foster – drab, drab, drab

    • Ela says:

Saw her being interviewed and she said FPJ was at football – they have not split up, she said they were together 12 years now. she seemed soooo nice and normal as well.looks fab in my opinion

  2. normades says:

I gasped with glee when I saw Tilda’s outfit. She just owns it. Love the styling, the color, the shape and the hair!!!!!

Thank you Tilda for being daring and different in a sea of meh. You rule.

  3. kaykay says:

Sarah Michelle Gellar gained a little bit weight but she looks good with the extra pounds

    • EmmaStoneWannabe says:

Agree! One of the healthiest-looking ladies in Hwood!

    • Emily says:

I was just thinking that. She got quite frail looking towards the end of Buffy, good to see her looking both better and healthier now.

  4. Jules says:

Love Tilda’s outfit. She is divoon.

    • bros says:

swinton wins this hands down. and meryl always gives the most gracious speeches every time she wins, mentioning the accomplishments of everyone else she is nominated with. classy classy woman.

  5. LAK says:

Love love Love Tilda. She just owns it.

SMG is wearing CZJ green dress from afew GG back

    JOdie – meh!

  6. The Original Mia says:

Tilda looked the best. Smidge was a walking tie-dye commercial that didn’t work. Jodie…meh.

  7. ds says:

Oh Tilda, can’t believe I forgot about her; she just another category, looks amazing in this.

  8. yanna says:

Jodie and Tilda are both Scorpios and always look so good and younger than their age without any PS. Jodie’s hairdo is my favourite.

  9. Sisi says:

at first glance I thought that Jodie was wearing an deflated maternity dress. The ruffled edge looked like a hanging sack to me. love the colour on her though

SMG’s dress has a beautiful smoke effect and it’s a nice fabric. I love the top, hate the bottom. It’s not a good silhouette for her I think.

Tilda looks lovely imo. It’s very feminine for her. Usually she keeps her outfits a little androgynous, not this time.

  10. atlantapug says:

    OMG, my comment disappeared!

Anyway, I think Jodie looks great.

But Ms. Swinson looks absolutely drop dead gorgeous in that blue.
Did anyone catch her on Leno the other night? She looks so harsh and cold that it blew me away how funny and sweet she was. Self-depricating humor and a pleasant back and forth with Jay just endeared me to her all the more.
She’s my new fav in Hollywood.

    • Jilli says:

Agree! Jodie looks fantastic! Tilda does too! Such a unique beauty.

      • Kathy says:

I agree, too! I think all three of them look great. I really like the pattern on SMG’s dress. That may be the best (and softest) I’ve ever seen Swinton. And Foster looks a lot more dressed up than normal, too.

  11. Lisa says:

Everytime I see my Baby Tilda…the ONLY thing that goes through my head is one of my favorite songs from David Bowie…

“Believing the strangest things…Loving the alien”…

    • reddmasters says:

Every time I see Tilda, I think it’s Bowie in Iman’s dress!

      • ann h says:

I agree with you reddmasters. I’m probably the only one that doesn’t appreciate her style. That hair; it looked like she borrowed Andy Warhol’s wig. The top of the dress looks like a tuxedo and then open toed sandals and a swish dress. I think the dress would have looked better with full length sleeves. The Thin White Duke meets Jean Genie.

    • Sassy says:

Hate to say this, since I love Tilda and anything she does. She is so versatile.
But – the dress reminds me of a “Mother of the Bride” dress a friend wore. I also dislike blue, pale or dark. Gellar’s dress looked like a 1950’s curtain that had been fashioned into a gown.

  12. SamiHami says:

Jodie Foster looked fantastic! I love love love that dress! The color, the cut, the fabric, the fit…total win.

Gellar’s dress is great, too. Youthful, without looking like she’s trying to be 20 again. Nice fit, interesting design. Overall, a really good look for her.

Swinton, well, she’s just such a fashion loser that the kindest thing is to probably just stop taking pictures of her and hope she’ll just go away. The only good thing about her look was the color of her outfit.

    • jc126 says:

I agree with you, but we’re clearly in the minority. I think Tilda Swinton looks odd with that pouf of hair, and like she’s uncomfortable. I have nothing against her, but I don’t get the worship she inspires. I like how Jodie Foster looks. I kind of like SMG’s look, it’s a bit puffy but not horrible. Is she pregnant?

    • Ann says:

“fashion loser”? She’s avantgarde, darling, and you clearly don’t get it.

      • SamiHami says:

Well, “Darling,” avant garde when regaring fashion generally means daring or unorthodox. I don’t see her look as qualifying. While it is different, it’s not particularly daring or edgy, It’s just unattractive. And I don’t count ugly as unorthodox, either.

Really, anyone can make themselves look weird. That doesn’t automatically make them artistic or avant garde.

      • Ann says:

Possum, I get it that you don’t like her style. But it seems that people who understand about fashion seem to tend to consider her style “avantgarde”, “fashion forward”, etc. There’s nothing wrong with not liking her style, but you’re all wrong if you want to argue that she isn’t unorthodox, artistic and edgy in her style choices.

      • normades says:

What Ann said! Tilda = Winning

  13. Jackie says:

tilda is queen, and king. puts all the others to shame. other worldly.

    • lw says:

So true. She’s one of the few stars whose fashion will be debated long after she’s gone. I gasped when I saw her.

  14. Hautie says:

I liked Jodie’s dress. It had a nice glitter to it and was not overly ambitious.

Jodie was there with her two sons and she looked appropriate. I have always enjoyed that she always sticks to clean cut looks. They flatter her the best.

Plus she is really petite. I bet she is not 5’1. So a aggressive style of dress… would only make her look over done.

And her sons are just too cute. Both of them are colored up like her, when she was a kid. Strawberry blondes with freckles.

  15. Franny says:

Tilda looks great in her crazy alien way – her jewelry was amazing!

  16. serena says:

Tilda is amazing, another beautiful outfit yay!

  17. chloe says:

Loved Tilda, she always mixed things up fashion wise, sometimes she misses but this was a hit, loved the color.
SMG (who I love from Buffy days) I didn’t love, not a big fan of tye-dye, but I like her hair and makeup.
Jodie in Armani, big suprise, loved her boys and they look just like her.

  18. stephanie says:

    I like Jodie’s safe, classy look .

  19. kaykay says:

    Tilda looks stunning as always.

  20. lucy2 says:

Jodie’s was prettier on TV than in the photos. I love SMG but didn’t care for that dress.
Tilda’s was sort of fantastic, perfect for her.

  21. truthful says:

    Tilda looks fab!!!

  22. Penguin says:

    Think smg might be pregnant.

  23. Marianne says:

I usually hate what Tilda’s wearing, but I really liked this on her.

I HATED SMG’s dress. The Tye-Dye is one thing, but the weird poofy middle? Blech!

Jodie looked nice, but kind of forgettable.

  24. Cathy says:

I don’t like the coat-top of Tildas dress, it looks to boxy to me and the materials don’t look good together. Sarahs dress is ok, it’s meh. Jodie looks as impecciable as ever, stylish but simple.

  25. EmmaStoneWannabe says:

Not any of these 3 were great for me. Sorry, no top pick.

  26. jane says:

    tilda looked amazing

  27. Shelly says:

Loved SMG’s dress, but not sure if it was right on her. Seemed like too much dress for her. Tilda – well, I just can’t get on the Tilda train. She is just strange, IMO. Jodie looked nice.

  28. Briamatia says:

TILDA TILDA TILDA!!!! All day all night! Amazing that hair is so amazingly perfect. I would probably have liked to see a short skirt rather than the mermaid tail. Thats a WIN in my books

SMG look HORRIBLE. Really that dress and hair look like she is trying way to hard. Honestly a big fail.

Jodie has fallin from my good graces. I understand a strong friendship but really defending that pig mel?? the top part of her body looks good, the rest not so much

  29. Halfmydadsage says:

Tilda rocks. There’s just nothing else to say after that.

  30. Happy21 says:

I think they all look great!

Tilda Swinton just owns her own style. Not many people could pull off that outfit or that hair! She rocked it.

I really like SMG’s dress. Not too sure why but it just draws me in.

Jodie Foster’s dress is drab but it suits her and she looks good.

  31. Floridaseaturtle says:

I loved Tilda’s style, she does own it, since she is so unique. SMG’s dress is not my type, however her reasons for wearing it, and the fact that she does look so happy and healthy make her beautiful. Jodie’s dress was boring to me, but like the other 2 women, I am most impressed how beautiful they are in their own skin. They look real…wow!

  32. jesstar says:

    Tilda is fierce!

  33. flix says:

SMG was a mess. Tilda Swinton looked great and true to her style. One of her best looks ever. Jodie Foster looked ageless, classy and stunning. She did not defend Mel Gibson. She just said he was a good friend to her. Which made me have more respect for her that she wouldn’t throw her good friend of 20 years under the bus just because it was the popular thing to do. Plus she showed she could laugh at herself when Ricky made a stinging joke. Foster will always be the classiest actress in hollywood to me.

  34. MorticiansDoItDeader says:

Sarah Michelle Gellar can do no wrong in my book. I’m a Sarahloonie. Hehehe.

Tilda looks like one of those tiny hairless dogs with the funny Mohawks. I believe they’re called Chinese cresteds.

    • Pia says:

LOL thank you! Tilda totally looks like a Chinese Crested! The close-up of her face makes me uncomfortable… I am going to give her the benefit of the doubt and assume she is extremely talented…

  35. Jaden says:

Hands down, Sarah was among the best dressed at the Golden Globes!

Sure, it’s a risky dress, but what a fashion-forward and fresh look! You go girl!

  36. Darla says:

    omgTilda. That is great.

  37. Original Chloe says:

Tilda = Ziggy Stardust. Love it.

  38. Heine says:

I must be taking crazy pills…Sarah Michelle Gellar’s dress looks like a tye-dyed down comforter to me. The top is fine but the bottom is so…poufy and fug.

Love miss Tilda Swinton. She’s totally bonkers with her outfits but she has great personal style.

  39. atlantapug says:

I think SMG’s dress looks like a melting blueberry shortcake.

  40. ezra says:

    Tilda. She’s ethereal.

    • joxjooze says:

      exactely my first thought!

SMG looked good, daring dress, still somehow she pulled it off.

Jodie was nice too- but something was missing, and those shoes weren’t the best choice.

  41. Lindy says:

Tilda is total perfection–that color, the fabrics, all of it. Jodie Foster is a big bag of meh. Dull as dirt. SMG, I’m on the fence. On the one hand I agree that it’s bold and interesting and unexpected, and the hair and makeup are wonderful. But she’s so petite, that I wonder if all that volume *plus* the swirly color pattern isn’t just swallowing her up? I kind of wish she’d done that dress in a solid, nright color instead, or done a short version of it in the pattern. Pick one!

  42. Erandyn says:

Nice outfit, but is that a possum on her head?

  43. Nina says:

tilda is awesomely alien and i love her style. she marches to her own drummer.

sarah michelle – i like her too although i don’t know if the dress really worked. but it was fresh/different.

    jodie looks great and classic.

  44. Ravensdaughter says:

Ah-Tilda! She is one of a kind! Initially I thought she had a bit of Ziggy Stardust going with the satin jacket, but the whole ensemble is tasteful. The hairstyle–well, that’s Tilda.
Jody-always tasteful, with a nice ‘do,
SMG-who styled her? What is that thing she’s wearing?

  45. meme says:

Tilda looks flawless. I love her style.

  46. Ranga says:

I love Tilda’s hairstyle, I’m so sick of long boring hair. I like the fabric of Michelle’s but there’s too much of it. Jody looks so elegant, even if it is a boring bob.

Overall, I like Tildas’ look best.

  47. geekychic says:

Tilda Swinton always wins, but here she is…hands down, amazing!
Buffy has a…i don’t know what it is: an edgy prom dress?i like the tie-die, it’s done really pretty; but the cut is overdone. it’s too much.
and Foster is pretty and the dress is fine, but it seems to me as i’ve seen that cut on her one time to many (especially the top)-armani?

  48. J-Kitt says:

Firstly, SMG’S dress is not really tie-dye, it is more of a smoke or drop of dye in a glass of water effect. The only thing about her look that stops her from being absolutely gorgeous is her eye makeup! way way too heavy.

  49. Amy says:

SMG’s makeup is awful, but I thought she wore the dress well.

  50. skuddles says:

I really love Tilda’s dress! Her hair and makeup are… well out there, but the dress is gorg! Also really like SMG’s dress (although that jacket doesn’t quite work). And Jodie looks fab – her dress is not exactly wow but kudos for keeping up such an incredibly trim little bod.

  51. bagladey says:

Tilda looks AWESOME – she’s rocked it!!!

  52. Aqua says:

Her style is just fantastic.Their is absolutely no one quite like her in Hollywood.

  53. Mi says:

I loved SMG in that dress even though I would probably have hated it on anyone else somehow she made it work.

  54. Kim says:

All 3 are awful. I like the cut of Jodies dress but the color is bad. In another color it would have been nice.
