Madonna versus Evan Rachel Wood: who had the stronger green look?

Contained in this post are two women that I feel are the best and worst dressed of the Golden Globes. Not THE worst and best, but definitely two distinct ends of the spectrum., and they actually had some similarities (in color mostly). First up, Madonna in Reem Acra. It was just… bad. The fit was wrong, the bodice seemed like it was a different dress then the skirt, the little cap sleeves were horrid, and Madonna’s styling was awful with the scraggily hair and little fingerless gloves. It was just awful. It was even more awful that she actually won too – that’s the kind of award that validates her exercise in historical revisionism, that validates her ego as a “director”. Ugh. I was just disgusted with the whole thing. But I’ll say something nice: her arms look less gristly. And her face looks better.

Next up, one of my best-dressed of the evening, Evan Rachel Wood. I love her style and her styling. Evan CARES. She puts thought into her red carpet looks, and she has a good eye and she knows what looks good on her body, and all of that shows. Rachel’s dress is Gucci – she’s the face of Gucci. The dress is amazing in itself, and it’s especially great on her. ERW was there because she was nominated for Mildred Pierce – she lost, though. Too bad.

Ugh, Evan’s dress is so ugly…I don’t get how someone can actually like it.

On the other hand Madonna’s was too much, but I didn’t really disliked it.

And seriously both have boob issue.

    • Girl says:

I love that ERW is rocking her small breasts so proudly. She looks great. Not enough people appreciate smaller breasts and I mean that sincerely. Good for her. She looks wonderful overall.

Madonna does not look nearly as good and age has nothing to do with it.

  2. Marjalane says:

God, Madonna is such an old, see you next Tuesday. “My movie”, My production team”, “My song”, “My Director”. She reeks of narcissism.

    • mia girl says:

So agree! I came on to the post to vent about how insufferable Madonna was last night. Hands down, she has got to be the most self-absorbed, least gracious celebrity alive. And if what she had to say was actually interesting, I suppose it would be more tolerable… but it’s not. And yet she thinks with her faux English words she is spinning tales made of gold, imparting a glimpse into some type of genius. I was literally screaming at the TV for her to please stop talking. She was so full of her own BS that it became uncomfortable to watch.

For any of you who did not see Madonna’s red carpet interviews and/or acceptance speech, here they are: “I, me, my, myself, I, me, my, my, I, I, my, myself, me, me, me, my, I, and I”

      • ol cranky says:

ugh – David Furnish said pretty much the same things in a fairly accurate display of brazen bad sportsmanship

I just say video of her acceptance speech and is it me or do her arms look like an anorectic bodybuilder? I found them quite frightening to be honest

      • Jilli says:

Girl, you described Madonna exactly the way I would. She is an insufferable woman.

      • M says:

I’m in total agreement that Madonna is an extreme narcissist. That said, she has worked her as* off most of her life to get where she is.

      • Sue says:

I didn’t bother screaming at the TV – I just changed channels until I thought she would be finished. I can’t tolerate her and I don’t think I should have to listen to her …. so I didn’t!

    • Minty says:

      @M
Yeah, Madonna really hustled throughout her profession. I’ll give her that. She’s very skilled at self-promotion and manufacturing controversy, but she also slept with the right people who could help her career, hired the best creative artists (songwriters, set designers, producers, music video directors) while taking most of the credit, and stole the images or ideas of others (Marilyn Monroe, Marlene Dietrich, Louise Brooks, Debbie Harry, Fritz Lang, Guy Bourdin, Salvatore Acquaviva, Fairuz) along the way.

It’s hypocritical of her to say that Lady Gaga’s copying of her is ‘reductive’ when she has done the same thing. I don’t listen to Gaga’s music, but at least Gaga is gracious enough to publicly credit her ‘influences’. Madonna acts as if she’s original and rarely gives proper credit to others. As someone else mentioned, her GG acceptance speech was her usual me, myself, and I narcissism. Puh-leeze, bitch had plenty of help mixed in with her thievery. The last three names I mentioned above in parentheses are some of the people who sued her for plagiarism (Bourdin is dead, so his son filed the lawsuit) and either won or settled with her out of court.

      • DrM says:

Well said Minty (as usual) – I also thought “well that’s a bit rich” at Madonna’s reductive comment about Lady Gaga. I was a huge fan of Madge’s earlier work, not so much her later output. There aren’t really any new or original ideas, whether its pop culture, research or invention we all borrow from those who came before us. Where Madonna gets it all wrong is in her arrogance – yes she has busted her ass all her life to get where she is, but would it kill her to credit other’s for much of her ‘inspiration’ and to be a little less up her own a** in the process?

  3. spinner says:

I like Madonna’s dress. Totally suits her & she looks great. I like ERW dress better. How rich is that color. Nice!!

    • The Orignal Original says:

LOVE Evans dress. A gorgeous dress. I agree though that Madonnas was not bad and I actually liked it too.

    • Trashaddict says:

Not the biggest fan of either of them but I like both dresses! Could do without the gloves tho.

  4. Rita says:

Evan’s Gucci is a beautiful work of art. The design is a subtle and consistant flow that draws the eye slowly from bottom to top as your jaw drops with every inch of incredible detail. It appears effortless to wear.

    • Snappyfish says:

Absolutely agree!! The workmanship on ERW’s dress was amazing. It was truly the only piece of couture on the Red carpet last evening. She looked lovely & fresh which is a nice change for her.

As for Madge, the bodice was horribly ill-fitting. The dress got better towards the bottom but all in all a mess. However the art deco diamond bracelets Madge was wearing were to die for, the glove was ridiculously silly but she wore them on Graham Norton the other night as well…bad look, she should lose it

    • lucy2 says:

I agree too! That’s the first good photo I saw of it showing all the detail – really beautiful. I almost always like ERW’s fashion choices.

      • laylajanelovesgossip says:

CO-SIGN she looks great in this dress. Its like she is wearing ART!!!A masterpiece:-)

    • EmmaStoneWannabe says:

Agree! Incredible dress. Unique, stunning and great colors. Lucky girl for getting to wear that fantastic piece of art.

  5. Mar says:

Madonna looked good fort Madonna. ERW is freaking hot

  6. tracking says:

I was impressed when Madonna walked on stage in that dress (no more Stella, I guess), though maybe it doesn’t hold up under close scrutiny. ERW seems so smug and try hard to me–I have a visceral negative response to her. The dress itself is stunning (especially the bottom) but I don’t think it suits her figure.

    • Jayna says:

I rarely like a Stella McCartney dress, and notice no one had one on last night. Do you think she just gets people to wear them sometimes because of her father? I do.

    • Guesty says:

      Agreed completely.

ERW is also wearing too much makeup – the brows look a bit off.

Madonna’s boobs look absolutely oppressed in her getup. Add the glove and the speechifying and it’s all more than a little embarrassing.

  7. SamiHami says:

I don’t like either of these women, but good lord! Madonna just has the absolute worst fashion sense ever, and it just keeps getting worse and worse. And why does she refuse to comb her hair anymore? Her hair always looks horrible anymore.

Wood at least made an effort to look apropriate. She would be much more attractive without that smirk on her face.

  8. Charlotte says:

Madonna looked kinda fug to be honest, those weird tags on the dress…i just can’t.

    • EmmaStoneWannabe says:

Yeah seriously! Kaiser: “her arms look less gristly. And her face looks better.”..um compared to what? She looks horrid as ever.

      • aprayerforthewildatheart says:

Her arms when she was onstage scarred me for life. She looks like a kid ripped apart two Barbie and Ken dolls and put them back together all WRONG. Head-ken, breasts-Barbie, arms-Ken, hair-Barbie, etc. EWW LOL!

  9. NM9005 says:

I like Madonna’s dress better. ERW looked like a mermaid. She can do much better.

    • Lindy says:

That is pretty much exactly what I was going to say. I think Madonna’s dress is interesting (in a good way) and the colors are beautiful. ERW’s dress is mermaidy–and I feel like the last three or four years, there is nothing new that could possibly be done to make a mermaid dress interesting. Overdone and dull, and the color is too dark.

Also, for some reason, I find ERW totally unmemorable. I know I have seen her in movies but she is so underwhelming and so generic looking that I could not pick her out of a starlet lineup.

  10. Leila says:

umm i dunno…the top part of madonna’s dress is pretty even though i feel sorry for her boobs :)(by the way does she have implants?because they look great for a 53yo)…i like her hair and make up..as for evan..she’s absolutely gorgeous

  11. Quest says:

Madonna’s dress was so bad I did not even notice the finger gloves.

  12. LunaT says:

I’m so not a fan of the attitude of either of these women, but I’d have to say the non-chipmunk cheeked, non-glove wearing, non-narcissist looks a ton better.

I was dissapointed Madonna won. The ego does not need to be fed anymore. Especially when it’s for crap work.

    • Jayna says:

I love the song that won, Masterpiece. It hearkens back to early ’90s Madonna ballads. It’s a beautiful song. But music is subjective, I guess.

  13. Raven Sparrow says:

I really don’t like ERW’s dress. It looks half fish/half bird.

  14. brin says:

I didn’t like either dress. Madonna’s dress/style was fugly and ERW looked like she was molting with all those feathers.

  15. MSat says:

I actually thought Laura Dern’s green dress was the best “green look” of the night! Lovely, different, age appropriate and very flattering.

    • LunaT says:

Good point. I thought she looked beautiful. She’s always been a fav of mine—think she’s adorable.

    • E Train says:

Totally agree! I didn’t see her until she hit up on stage and man! Did she look great. Her hair was what Madge’s should’ve looked like; her body was killer; the dress fit better than a fingerless glove, which was refreshing after all the boob smashing that I saw; the dress was immaculate. And as an added bonus: Laura Dern’s face mIves properly. Loved her soft hair with the severe plunge of the neckline. Only wish her makeup had more umph.

Good lord, what a long comment. I had no idea I was such a LD fan.

      • ahoyhoy says:

It’s okay. I’ve never really been a LD fan myself, but that dress was KILLER, without being too self-conscious OR too ‘look at me.’

    • mia girl says:

YES! Laura Dern’s dress was lovely on her.

    • NM9005 says:

Omg, I just Googled LD and you’re right. It was the best green dress, just allround gorgeous!

  16. Esmom says:

ERW wins this round, that dress is beautiful and she looks put together. I really like Madonna’s dress although I agree it was too tight up top.

The big WTF for me (along with the crazy gloves, of course) was her hair. It looks like mine when I wash and let it air dry. It’s like she forgot to style it or ran out of time.

  17. Vee says:

Both dresses are heinous, do not like!

  18. Bad Gal Addiction says:

    Dear Madonna,

in case you didnt’t know, U can get plastic surgery for your hands too. So you don’t have to wear this stupid biker gloves together with gowns.

    Yours sincerely

  19. Erandyn says:

It’s weird how Madonna manages to totally look her age, even when there’s not a bit of fat, flab or a single wrinkle in sight. Somehow she still has granny-face.

  20. amurph says:

Ugh. Madonna. Her entire acceptance speech made me want to punt her. How often did she remind everyone it was her movie? We get it. I think I’d liked her dress without the bottom. The bottom is just odd. Is it a bunch of little dust ruffles patched together in a bunch of layers? For ERW…like her dress, hate her hair color. She’s too fair-skinned to have such a dull hair color. It needs to be warmer to work for her.

    • WillyNilly says:

She is totally pulling a Timberlake. When she accepted her award for that damn song, she was so ungracious it was like she was punishing the foreign press for rewarding her music. ‘I wanted to focus on my directing’. Boo friggin’ hoo.

  21. Hautie says:

Since I actually watched the show this year as it happen… all I could focus on was Madonna’s arms.

When she was standing up there going on and on about her genius… her arms looked awful. They are still gristly. She kept flexing and they just looked painful.

And I suspect those are her boobs. Not implants. Though she might have had them lifted. Along with everything else on her upper body. 🙂

  22. Peg says:

I couldn’t really get passed the gloves and how self centered her speech was. I was hoping that a big “reductive” sign would drop down and they would get the hooks out to drag her offstage.

  23. Marianne says:

I liked Madonna’s dress until I saw the bottom of it. Yuck. I LOVE ERW’s dress though. Stunner.

  24. jamminatorr says:

I loved ERW’s dress. Madonna’s dress did horrendous things to her boobs – it looked awful when she was presenting/accepting.

  25. Jules says:

Madonna’s dress was too tight and I loathe the dumb fingerless gloves. But it was her pompous, narcissistic speech that really made her unattractive.

  26. Jayna says:

I really liked Madonna’s dress. I found it adorable. Wearing the one glove on her right hand was fine. But her jewelry was to die for. And I thought Madonna was playful last night. There was nothing wrong with her speech. Her backstage interview was fun and lighthearted, which is rare for Madonna, let’s face it. And she was one of the few to give a one-liner back to Ricky. Rock on, Madonna.

  27. stephanie says:

i like ERW’s dress. it’s like fantasy mermaid done right.

  28. Juu says:

Evan’s dress is stunning! It’s very well done and fits her perfectly.

  29. lucy2 says:

Madonna’s is too much. Don’t like it at all.
    Love ERW’s.

  30. Charz says:

I don’t think ERW looks good in short hair… I think some women look really good with that hair cut but she’s not one of them.

  31. ahoyhoy says:

When Madge presented the ‘Best Foreign Film’ award, she went on and on about how foreign films meant so much to her when she was growing up. She specifically mentioned several directors, including Fellini—-Who I’m sure was quite popular in mid-60’s lower-class Detroit, but I digress.
Right after–Dustin Hoffman was presenting, and made some sarcastic crack about how his wife and some other life experiences really made presenting the next award special.
Anyone else notice that? Were Madge’s words all scripted, b/c Dustin really seemed like he was taking the piss outta her.
(And I say good for him!)

    • Jayna says:

I can’t remember all what he said. Maybe I misunderstood, but I thought he was razzing Ricky Gervais. Ricky came on earlier and said the speeches were going on too long and joked about cutting out thanking your wives, family, God, or whatever he said. And Dustin I thought was thanking his wife as a razz to Ricky. But, truthfully, I wasn’t paying attention half the time to the show.

    • actually, Dustin Hoffman was giving it back to Ricky Gervais for his comment about not thanking your agent and your wife and a bunch of people who had nothing to do with your win.

What I did notice was the lack of reaction during Madonna’s acceptance speech.

  32. TheOriginalVictoria says:

Can’t stand Madge as a person, love all her music. In the 90s and early aughts she rocked the mic but hasn’t she learned her lesson from Swept Away? Stick with music supervision or something but sit the hell down.

That being said, her dress was amazing and on of my favs. ERW’s dress is stunning by itself. She does nothing for it and vice versa. Someone like Sofia Vergara can pull it off.

    • Jayna says:

I too love the dress and think it was perfect for a pop icon. It had the perfect vibe and suited her. I’m surprised people hate it so much.

  33. Shelly says:

Evan looks fantastic. Madonna – ugh. The face, the hair, the dress, the ATTITUDE. Her speeches were so uncomfortable and embarrassing. “me, me, me, I, I, I, mine, mine, mine.” God, she is self-absorbed. And that’s saying a lot when she’s in a room full of generally self-absorbed people.

  34. Nev says:

    Madonna is Madonna.
    love her.
    she has an attitude…so what?

they all have it too…just don’t let it fly free like she does.

Masterpiece is a lovely song…glad she won.

    sit down elton.

  35. Julie says:

Madonna looked better than usually in the face but can’t stand her so it didn’t make a difference to me. Rachel, don’t know much about her. I do think her hair looks better on her a little darker. This seems to wash her out.

  36. Jillian says:

her whole look to me was messy..and busy..the glove…the scraggly hair…those MAN arms looked ridculous and hard….somehow I doubt Grace Kelly or Audrey Hepburn would have silly arms like that…

  37. Sara says:

Madonna’s arms are gross, how are they possible?

  38. Jillian says:

ugh….i know..it looks like a man’s arms sticking out of a girly sleeve…so hard and unattractive….I would think if I looked in the mirror and saw that I would decide to wear, looser, long sleeves…but, it’s subjective I suppose. Fat arms aren’t pretty either…but this is just too much….

  39. Darla says:

They’re both smug ladies…how about that?

  40. catt says:

I hated that Madonna won. Now she will be saying how she directed a Golden Globe winning film. Ugh. The women has no grace. That whole awful movie is nothing but an exercise is Madonna fantasy revisionism plus a terrible script and ridiculous plot.

  41. Original Chloe says:

    I can’t say how much I love Evan’s dress. It’s hypnotizing.

    • Stubbylove says:

Agree completely. Her entire look is flawless – she knows herself – the styling coupled with the confidence is fantastic.

  42. skuddles says:

Well if I had to pick one, I guess I prefer Woods. But the best green dress of the night went to Zooey Deschanel IMO. Girl totally rocked her frock!

  43. sam says:

Madonna had one of those dresses that just looked different each time I saw it. Sometimes good – sometimes awful!

  44. Love her or hate her,she sent Ricky running off stage like a scolded puppy.

  45. Ranga says:

I love Evans dress, she looks like a bird.

  46. Laura says:

OMG! I loved Evan’s dress….it was beyond beautiful!

  47. Jane says:

ERW looked wonderful, dress is absolutely beautiful. Madonna looked very good, she has had a great face lift and looks natural. But, her arms, as usual look awful. I don’t know what her work out routine is, but I have seen some photos of her with stringy, but ripped, arms and legs that do nothing for her appearance.

  48. jane16 says:

Don’t really like either dress, but thought Madonna’s was especially hideous, and that the cut of the dress looked like it was meant for someone in their 20s, not 50s.

  49. Jillian says:

k..makeover time…imagine Madonna and the above outfit as this; no necklace..no glove….long sleeves of loosely fitting, black, sheerlike fabric, …hair in a neat, low ponytail…those few modifications would have made her look so much classier….and age appropriate.

  50. Violet says:

I thought Madonna’s face and arms looked better than they have in ages, but that her dress was ill-fitting and unflattering.

I loved ERW’s dress and think it’s great that she’s so comfortable with her small breasts. Let’s hope she never dates ARod!

  51. Mooshi says:

Evans dress reminds me of the species of starling (a bird)Its feathers glimmer green and black in the light, but looks totally black in the shade.

What a brilliant piece of work obviously inspired by nature. I just love it.

  52. Lucy says:

Madonna’s acceptance speech was totally inappropriate…she acted as if her film had won best picture…thanking the actress in the movie, etc…. ridiculous…the award was for MUSIC…

  53. A Fan says:

Evan Rachel Wood’s dress was beautiful. And she’s got style!

One small complaint – her haircolour. It is not flattering (in my opinion). I can tell it’s not her natural colour (which would be darker).

Madonna? She’s just gross. In every way.

  54. Crime Stick says:

Madonna’s boobs look like fat pecs in that ill-fitting dress.

  55. whatevs says:

ok madonna’s dress is actually really nice and interesting for a change, but she needed to lose the my boobs are suffocating look and the huge cross-she needs to stop repeating her 80’s self and become a huge parody of herself. evan is looking much older than her age lately. i think she needs to wear something younger and fresher.

  56. Isa says:

Evan looks like she belongs to Slytherin.

  57. Madpoe says:

Kermit the Frog has a stronger green look…just my 2cents. 😉

  58. LV says:

Half gymnast outfit, half bird, and the top, that plunging V-neckline, is so ill-fitted for ERW’s chest. I like the color on her, but not the fit.
