Elton John lost the Golden Globe for “Best Song” to Madonna. And dear God, was he pissed, as was his husband, David Furnish. While Elton simply let his bitchface do the talking, David Furnish went on a rampage regarding Madge’s win – he gave quotes to media outlets (“Did Madonna get the Golden Globe because she attended the awards and agreed be a presenter? The award should have gone to Mary J. Blige or Elton. I like Madonna’s music, but not her movies. She should stick to what she is good at.”) and then he took to Facebook to blast Madge – “Madonna. Best song???? F**k off!!! Madonna winning Best Original Song truly shows how these awards have nothing to do with merit. Her acceptance speech was embarrassing in its narcissism…”
So, it was ugly. And Madonna kept her head up, surprisingly enough, and simply told the press that she hoped she and Elton weren’t fighting (again). Well, now that several days have passed, David Furnish has finally decided to bury the hatchet. Except he’s blaming all of us for blowing his words out of proportion. Yes, because WE are the ones with issues.
David Furnish has described his and Elton John’s spat with Madonna over the Golden Globes as “a tempest in a teapot.”
After blasting Madge as “desperate” and “narcissistic” after she beat Elton for Best Original Song, a not fully apologetic Furnish wrote on Facebook, “Wow! What a tempest in a teapot. My comments regarding the Golden Globes have been blown way out of proportion. My passion for our film ‘Gnomeo & Juliet’ and belief in Elton’s song really got my emotional juices going. But I must say for the record that I do believe Madonna is a great artist, and that Elton and I wish her all the best for next week’s premiere of the film ‘W.E.’ ”

Yeah, right. I wonder why David is changing his tune so suddenly? Did Madonna call Elton and tell him to get a grip? Did Elton realize that David probably wasn’t helping his (Elton’s) Oscar campaign? Or did David – who is 49 years old – realize he was acting like a gigantic baby? Let me clear – I think Madonna’s Globe win was terrible and undeserved too, and I think Madge deserves a lot of scorn for a lot of stuff, but really, does it matter? I can understand why Elton is frustrated by someone like Madonna. Musically, he is way more talented than she is but she has always gotten by with selling sex and constant self-promotion. I agree Jada. For anyone whose been around long enough to remember the onset of Madonna’s career… she was sort of an 80’s joke. Just fluff and cheese, weak voice, wooden dance moves – with lots of sexy thrown in to distract from her obvious lack of talent (Like a Virgin video was a scream, so laughably bad). And she’s built on that ever since. So to a serious artist like Elton whose been around forever and produced a massive body of work thanks to an abundance of genuine talent, Madonna is not someone to be taken seriously, despite the fact she takes herself so very very seriously. But her iron will and talent for self promotion have kept her on the scene all these years and I guess that deserves the appropriate recognition.

Lebanese singer Fairuz sued Madonna for plagiarizing her famous 1962 hymn in Erotica. It was settled out of court, and the Erotica single and album are banned in Lebanon. Frozen and Ray Of Light album are banned in Belgium because Frozen ripped off part of a song written by Salvatore Acquaviva.
Born This Way probably has the same chord progressions or whatever. Lady Gaga is not particularly original, either. That meat dress was done before. She copied Roisin Murphy and also Dale Bozzio of Missing Persons. The difference is that she is usually gracious enough to publicly credit some of her “influences”.
Madonna rarely gives proper credit to others. That’s why she is often sued for copyright infringement, from sampling without getting permission. So what if she’s sold millions of albums and her concerts are successful? That doesn’t make her a talented artist. McDonald’s sells billions of burgers and nobody is calling their food cuisine. Justin Bieber makes millions, too, and he’s just as mediocre.
Besides her skill at self-promotion and manufactured controversy, Madonna’s success in her field can be credited to the following:
1. Sleeping with the right people, especially in the beginning. Jellybean Benitez, anyone? She even offered to sleep with the head of production at Orion Pictures to get cast in Desperately Seeking Susan. The chief producer (the source of the story) is a straight, married woman, who of course turned her down. What’s funny is that Madonna got the part anyway. She didn’t need to whore herself out for that role.
2. Hiring more talented people to write her songs, produce her music, design her concert sets, and direct her music videos. Ever notice that her best songs were written in collaboration with Patrick Bray and Stephen Leonard? She no longer works with them and her later songs never equaled her earlier stuff.
3. Stealing the images of Marilyn Monroe, Marlene Dietrich, Louise Brooks, Jean Harlow, Brigitte Bardot, Bette Davis, Ann-Margret, and other actresses from Old Hollywood. If you’re familiar enough with classic films and reference famous old photos, you will easily spot the rip offs. Copying that frequently is not inspiration, it’s thievery. Take note, Beyonce.
Madonna has longevity in the business primarily because she’s ruthless, has few scruples, uses people and discards them when they are no longer useful. It certainly isn’t due to singing and acting talent. “Successful” men do the same crappy things all the time, so her gender is not the focus here. It’s her behavior.

I too grew up in the eighties when Madonna had the world by the balls, was confident,now she doesn’t seem all that confident with all the surgery, and trying to be as she was back then. Clooney reeks of the same desperation. The faux brit accent is bizarre, she was really uming at the golden globes, which surprised me as back then she didn’t talk like that.
Madonna not relevant? Ha. Her last tour was the best selling tour of all time for a solo artist male or female. She still tours behind new music and sells out quickly to stadium tours. Her LiveNation deal is huge. When you do tours and it is supporting a new album with nine new songs and the majority of the music was 1998 on with only three or four 80s tunes usually, that’s relevant. Plus she usually does different arrangements that freshen up older songs. People flock to her concerts knowing it’s not a nostalgia act and that it is newer music and they pay big prices to see her. Why do people still flock to her concerts? Because she has a great catalogue of music spanning decades and she puts her all into her concerts for her audience.

Love her or hate her, but she’s one of the few 80s stars (U2, Springsteen) that IS still relevant. Even if her album won’t sell as big as 2005, 13 million albums, it will sell in the millions, which in this day and age is no small feat, especially for longtime acts.

It gets even worse. The great William Orbit who composed and produced with Madonna the brilliant Ray of Light album and is working on Madonna’s new album is the sweetest guy in the world. Someone posted a screen capture of Orbit responding to David about the tone of his post. David told him off and tried to insult him working with Madonna and he was only desperate for money to work with her again and insulting him he wouldn’t know a good song. Whoa. Orbit was classy and posted back Elton was brilliant but he didn’t know David but couldn’t believe David would want to act this way and that he has worked the way he wanted to work in his career and it is not about money. He said he didn’t like the negativity and was bowing out from the thread. Orbit is truly brilliant and respected and unlike David has dignity.

Sycophantic, many make excuses for her boorish behavior and come back for more. I realized a lot of her success was built on ruthlessness, fraud, and the successive hiding behind fake personas. That woman has rarely ever been “real” to the public. You find out these kinds of things when you make some small effort to look beneath the facade.
