Oscar-winning director Tom Hooper just dumped his pregnant girlfriend

I vaguely know who Tara Subkoff is. She was one of the founding designers with Imitation of Christ, she’s BFFs with Chloe Sevigny, and she used to date Jimmy Fallon back in the day. I had no idea that Tara had been dating Tom Hooper, the British director who won the Oscar for The King’s Speech last year, for more than a year. But they were together. And now it’s over. And it’s a MESS. Tara is pregnant, you see. And her version of events has Tom Hooper dumping her literally MINUTES after she told him she was pregnant. His version is different, but it’s still pretty rough:

Oscar-winning director Tom Hooper has called off his engagement to fashion designer Tara Subkoff, who’s just told friends and Hooper that she’s a few months pregnant with his child, according to sources.

The pair were quietly engaged in Paris in May after meeting around the Golden Globes in January last year.

“They had just celebrated their one-year anniversary,” said a source close to the couple.

But “The King’s Speech” director last weekend broke off their relationship and left New York for London, as Subkoff suspected she was pregnant.

Sources close to Subkoff say the couple had been trying for a baby for months, and, “She took several home pregnancy tests,” after he left for London. Now “Imitation” creator Subkoff is telling friends a doctor has confirmed her pregnancy and she is “distraught” about the end of their relationship.

However, a source close to Hooper confirms he broke off their engagement, but insists he had no idea she was expecting until Subkoff left him a voice mail yesterday.

“He broke up with her on Friday, and the last time they spoke was Saturday. He did not know she was pregnant — there was no discussion of her being pregnant,” the source said. “Then he got this voice mail [yesterday] from Tara saying she’s pregnant. He doesn’t know what to do.”

The source explained the pair had broken up a few times and their relationship had recently been rocky. And Hooper “just wasn’t ready to get married. He’s married to his career. He’s just going into production on a huge film. He’s under a tremendous amount of pressure. The timing of this could not be more difficult.”

But the source added, “Tom still adores Tara, and obviously he’ll do the right thing by her.”

Hooper will begin production on “Les Miserables” — starring Russell Crowe, Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway —on Feb. 6. Reps for Hooper and Subkoff had no comment.

If this story was about two B-list (or even C-list) actors, it would be getting major play. But I guess people don’t care about British directors and their pregnant fashion designer girlfriends? Prove them wrong! Care about this, because it’s a really scandalous gossip story. Do you believe Tom’s side of things, that he dumped her without knowing about her pregnancy? Or was Tara trying to “trap” him into a commitment by getting knocked up? I think the crux of the scandal is in the timing – she finds out she’s pregnant and he dumps her, all within a 24-hour-period. Sketchy!

Jeez they look like a pair of misery guts.

  2. islandgirl says:

Maybe that exactly how it happened. I am not jumping to blame him so fast and they don’t have to be together for him to take care of his child

    • Molly says:

That’s true, but it’s better for the fetus if the mother isn’t subjected to the stress from a withdrawal of emotional support from her primary romantic partner. It’s not the decent thing to do for the fetus.

  3. LeManda says:

Timing is sketchy AND her dresses are sketchy!!!!

  4. Tapioca says:

Oooh! It’s like Tom Brady & Bridget Moynahan all over again, except with the guy who robbed David Fincher of his The Social Network director’s Oscar, and a woman I’ve never heard of.

However, “she’s BFFs with Chloe Sevigny, and she used to date Jimmy Fallon back in the day” means I’ll be siding with Mr. Hooper’s version of events! I’m prejudiced like that.

Oh, and has Celebitchy covered Kristin Cavieliri’s (spelling?) “accidental” pregnancy yet?

  5. Agnes says:

Omg, bottom of the barrel awful. Ugh.

  6. carrie says:

i believed Hooper was gay and he did his coming out after his Oscar win?!apparently i confused

on his ex-pregnant girlfriend,if he take responsability about the kid,i don’t care about the mother (i may be b*tchy but there is many gold diggers)

  7. Zigggy says:

    Oooh, scandalous!

  8. smith says:

Given his bird beak and thin lips and her blondness and slight wonk eye, will their baby be the splitting image of Paris Hilton?

Magic 8-ball says: “Signs point to yes”

    • Brigitte says:

      Heehee! slight wonk eye…

    • Erin says:

While I’m totally up for calling a “wonk” eye when I see one, in Tara Subkoff’s case, she had a brain tumor removed which left her paralyzed on her right side. (Therefore, in the 2nd photo, her left side is smiling while the right remains expressionless).

  9. Lini says:

She looks just like Lily van der Woodsen from gossip girl!

I also agree with the poster above who said Hooper robbed David Ficher of his deserving Oscar last year.

  10. Petunia says:

“He’s married to his career.” Really? And does your career give a flip about you when you’re sick or upset or needing someone to accompany you to something important, like a funeral? Naaaaah. Sounds like the guy is just selfish – he has time for a career but not the woman who was good enough to have sex with or the child they made. Douche.

    • ol cranky says:

the relationship appears to have been pretty rocky so I don’t think he was being a douche for deciding he didn’t want to be beholden to this woman as his partner. Of course, it seems odd that “they” were trying to get pregnant if they’d had that many rough spots so one has to wonder if she was trying to get pregnant to increase her chances of getting him down the aisle. She seems pretty quick to make the “I told him I was pregnant and he dumped me” story public; that in and of itself seems to emit a bit of a stench.

*If* he dumped her because she is pregnant, he’s an ass. If he dumped her without knowing she’s pregnant he’s not being a douche. Additionally he’s not a douche for not running back to be her bf or marry her just because she’s pregnant. He needs to be responsible and support her and his child but he doesn’t have to be her bf/husband to do that

    • Molly says:

Directors always have a revolving list of women/wannabe actresses willing to sleep with them. It’s skanky of the dude to dump someone he got pregnant. Dude needs to learn to wrap it.

  11. lily says:

I still could’t get over the fact that he won Best Director last year, not David Fincher.

  12. Me says:

Pregnant or not if you dont want to be with someone, you shouldnt feel like you need to. He shouldnt either. Just be civil for the kid. In this day and age its pretty naive to think your safe from a breakup just because your pregnant, its not like 50 years ago.

  13. curious says:

“imitation of christ” is such a stupid name for a clothing company. well, for any company, really. (i’m an atheist, so i’m only offended by the dumbness, not the potential blasphemy).

  14. Shay Kay says:

I need him to confirm or deny that they were trying to procreate before I sign off on either one. If they were trying for a baby than he’s full of sh*t to “suddenly” realize that he doesn’t want children or her as he’d already decided to commit.

Whether she is a golddigger or not is invalid as he’s been with her for a year and presumably knows how babies are made. The baby certainly is not a golddigger so he needs to man up.

    • Rachel says:

I completely agree with you. There is definite sketchiness there, but not sure whose fault. Poor new baby!

  15. Naye in VA says:

Sounds wierd that if they were actively trying to get pregnant that he would run from the new. I kinda believe his version. but i really dont even know why these two have versions that need to be released. I cared for you Kaiser. I cared

  16. NM6804 says:

A baby shouldn’t make him feel guilty in staying or not. If their relationship was rocky to start with then a baby certainly isn’t going to help change things either. Also, if he’s “married to his career” then I don’t see how they were trying for a baby. Seems like he had his priorities straight and his GF wanted other things in life which is fair and normal but don’t twist it like he was in with the idea too. It may be sketchy but it wouldn’t be the first and last time a woman tried to snag a man through a whoops-baby (see Cavallari). Seeing how he’s selfish and career driven and how it was an of-off relationship I can’t see him ever agreeing to having a baby so quick. Also, if doing the “right thing” is providing her money and support, I don’t see how I should vilify him because he wasn’t ready to settle down and start a family with her.

  17. jc says:

I will always be bitter for her that she also dated director Wes Anderson as well. Always had a huge crush on him, cannot wait to see his new movie.

  18. Eleonor says:

If he is really married to his career,if he is not ready to settle why were THEY trying “to have a baby for months?” This makes no sense to me.

  19. SolitaryAngel says:

I really, REALLY hope that those aren’t her own designs she’s wearing.

  20. Hattie says:

He “just wasn’t ready to get married”? He is 40. They met around the Golden Globes and have gotten engaged in the year since…

    huh.

He does not come off this looking well. But that may be his dodgy haircut.

  21. kristipistol says:

On a side note, I just watched “The Kings Speech” and it was awesome.

  22. Cathy says:

I like the dress in the top picture, but the rest of the dresses are ugly.

  23. mia girl says:

Either version seems weird so I’ll go for a combination of the two.

But on a purely selfish note, I need this guy to resolve this quickly and find a happy place with this lady because he is about to direct one of my favorite stories with one of my favorite actors in the lead (Hugh!) so I NEED HIM TO NOT SCREW IT UP!

(Taylor Swift’s possible involvement is bad enough – so he needs to get his shit together)

  24. Kaboom says:

Of course that might make more sense if she revealed to be pregnant but not by him.

  25. Dawn says:

This guy is ugly inside and out. What a douche. The next thing you know he will be stating that the “child” is not his and refuse to pay any type of child support. The guy is a douche and should be ashamed.

  26. k says:

Nothing worse than an ugly douchebag.

  27. mln76 says:

It seems like she thought she could trap him with a baby which really sucks. He has a responsibility to take care of the child not to stay in a relationship.

  28. irishserra says:

Very sketchy. He sounds like a douchebag to me.

I think she looks like a blonde Patricia Heaton.

  29. HA! says:

Well, she really looks like she could be self sufficient financially and she looks like a decent looking blonde. She could get a better looking, richer man if she wanted to. Besides a jerk who doesn’t come out of the closet until the gal he’s been banging gets preggers…NOW THAT’S SHADIER!

    like he’d rather be a fag than a dad…Geez!…

and yes, i agree with whomever posted that most celebitchers tend to stigmatize and judge the women harshly instead of the douchy men who deserve a bitchy beating. We gotta stand up for the fellow women…with the exception of Jlo, Neediston or Blohan.

    • mia girl says:

Did you read the story at all? Reading comprehension is your friend.

Nobody came out of a closest in this story and your clever “tag” line is really just disgusting.

  30. barb333 says:

@ha, Um wow. Why did you throw in that sentence, and we all know why I’m talking about. It has no place in any debate. You are ignorant!

  31. Tracy says:

Let’s see: up-and-coming director who just broke through to mainstream success and aspiring designer? I’d say he’s just now getting the lay of the land and she was holding him back. He’ll be seen with an aspiring starlet (Blake Lively-style) within 3 months… ya think?

  32. Marianne says:

We weren’t there, so who knows whether he dumped her because she was pregnant ot not. Things might not have been working out and the dumping came at a poor time.

Or he’s an ass who got cold feet. Who knows.

  33. TheOriginalVictoria says:

I remember Tara being in one of my favorite movies. Admittedly all movies with Alicia Silverstone are my favorite movies because like Gisele, I kind of am in love with her. LOL. But she was in True Crime with her as the slutty best friend to straight-laced Alicia.

I also thought there was a lot of -offs in those days because Marla Sokoloff (who played Tara, Steph’s best friend on Full House) was in True Crime too.

But really that is not the point, I just had two Dunkin Donut’s Coolatas and I’m extra hyper!

Anyway, I totally think that she didn[‘t trap him, but that it was coincidental.

If the stories about them trying to have a kid is true, that’s a shame. Why would he do that and then break up with her? Wouldn’t it be better to get the commitment first before trying for the kids? I’m not being religious or uptight. It’s just that an engagement is always ripe for the option to bail, not that marriages aren’t, especially in these days but actually tying the knot makes things more permanent?

    Scandalous!

  34. hazeldazel says:

so let me get this straight, the pair has supposedly been trying for a baby “for months”. and has been off-again on-again several times and “rocky”. AND JUST CELEBRATED THEIR 1st ANNIVERSARY?!?!? Yeah, sounds right. This is gonna be the marriage for the ages.

Especially when you consider that since he just won the Oscar so this is gonna be the busiest time in his career.

So I tend to believe more his side of the story, and like others have said, he doesn’t need to be married to the mother to be an awesome dad.

    • fabgrrl says:

Just what I was thinking. That hardly sounds like a sane “trying for a baby” situation. Very fishy story. I think what has people riled up, and rightly so, is the idea that Hooper dumped his girlfriend BECAUSE she is pregnant. That seems to be what the Subkoff side is implying. But it really makes no sense. I’m sure we will be hearing more soon.

  35. Lindy says:

I mean, at this point it’s all he-said she-said regarding the timeline. She seems to think they were both on board with the pregnancy thing, while he seems to think the relationship was rocky. We’ll probably never know.

I have a hard time understanding stuff like this, though. I mean, pregnancy seems like the kind of thing you’d want to be 100% clear on with your boyfriend before you toss the pills or he ditches the condoms. I don’t get the whole confusion thing, honestly, I don’t.

  36. Mouse says:

Um..so they were trying to have a baby and then when it happened, he bailed? Something doesn’t add up here.

    • Alix says:

Wasn’t she the designer who had a life-threatening brain tumor a couple of years ago? I almost hope she was trying to snag this guy, because otherwise, she’s being left, pregnant, in the lurch by a complete douchebag, and it seems to me she’s had it hard enough already.

      • Tim Whatley says:

i immediately remembered her brain tumor or something like that…and wasn’t it fairly recent? As I recollect she had to have a fundraiser or something (did she not have insurance? yikers).

  37. WOM says:

Comment #8 by Smith is hilarious!

When I read the title I thought “Surely this can not be gossip about Tom Hooper, the lead singer from the Canadian band The Grapes of Wrath? What the–?”

This isn’t a juicy scandal because the principles lack widespread name recognition AND because they are both 40 years old. So long as Hooper pays support and Subkoff puts his name on the birth certificate AND lets him have access to his child, the story will fade away. And I’m aces with that.

  38. Sarah says:

If you don’t feel ready for marriage and kids then use a f–king condom!

  39. Reece says:

I couldn’t give bleeps about this. You know what I care about? You know what pisses me off when I see him?

    TAYLOR _________ SWIFT as Eponine!
You fail at life in general Mr Hooper. You fail! At. Life.

  40. the original bellaluna says:

Well, if they’d “really been trying,” why was the pregnancy such a shock to him? Was he unaware what they’d really been trying for? Was he playing Russian roulette with his penis? What was actually going on there, anyway? Enquiring minds want to know!

(And he’s a total ass-hat for leaving her just after finding out she’s pregnant. What is he, 16?)

    • Marianne says:

The story does make him sound douchey, and especially if he did dump her only for the reason of her being pregnant…but who knows. Maybe they were having problems to begin with and then they find out she’s pregnant.

Why stay together (baby or not) if you’re not happy in the relationship?

      • Kimlee says:

Or relationship was rocky because she wanted to have kids and he didn’t she could have kept bushing for a baby and she could have talk about being on the pill doesn’t mean she was taking it, so if he dump her for that reason I don’t see that as being douchey as long as he takes care of his kid that all that matters.

  41. Isa says:

Their relationship was rocky but they were still trying for a baby? Ugh.
If he had any doubts in his mind he should’ve used a condom.

  42. bettyrose says:

What? Why is she pregnant if it wasn’t something they mutually agreed on? That’s a terrible thing to do to someone, and an even worse thing to do to a kid. I do not buy the “trying for a baby” line. Clearly they weren’t that committed.

  43. Jeffrey says:

I respect her for having the nerve to wear these awful frocks in public. They are all ill concieved and horribly executed. The construction, fabric, gawdy flowers….. Sweet Jesus, what a mess.

  44. Jacqueline says:

I heard that if a man has a small mouth, he is very selfish. This rings true. Look at his mouth. Reminds me of Henry VIII’s.

  45. Angie says:

Aw poor Tara, I am such a fan of hers, total girl crush 🙂

  46. Meanchick says:

This is what I don’t understand, maybe because I have morals, but if I was even THINKING about breaking up with someone, we would not be having sex AT ALL! This is how things get messy. It’s usually a guy who breaks up with his girl right around a pregnancy announcement. Being married is less of a big deal than bringing a new life into the world? No matter who shot John, it’s messy because they were still having sex even thought he was having 2nd thoughts.
