Reese Witherspoon praises Duchess Kate: “She carries herself so beautifully”

Last year, Duchess Kate and Prince William stopped in California for a few days to do some glitzy events. One of those events involved a Beverly Hills reception (during the day) in which Reese Witherspoon, arguably one of America’s Sweethearts, got to come face-to-face with a real-life “princess”. Which I guess Kate is, although her working title is only “The Duchess of Cambridge”. I’m including some of the photos from last year’s event, in which Reese can be seen looking at Kate with AWE.

Anyway, Reese is on today’s Ellen show, and Ellen asked her about meeting Kate. Reese was cute about it:

Reese: Somebody called me and said we’re having a really small fundraiser would you want to come over and meet the Prince and Princess? I was like, Yes. My husband just thought I was so dorky. He was like, why are you so excited? I must of tried on like six outfits. I’m meeting a princess. You don’t understand. You have to be wearing the right outfit and the whole thing. I don’t know maybe we can be friends. So we went and it’s always funny. Whenever I am super excited about things, my husband calls it the double barrel. That’s when I smile so big I look like a child.

Ellen: You really do look happy (shows photo) You’re just beaming.

Reese: I was so excited to meet her. Y’all, she’s a princess.

Ellen: Was she nice? Do you think y’all will hang out?

Reese: I mean, I would like to hang out. I’m not sure she wants to hang out with me. I could see that happening.

Ellen: Was she down to earth?

Reese: She was really nice. She was lovely. She’s so composed. She seems like such a lady and I think it’s so nice now days to see someone with such nice composure and carries herself so beautifully.

[Via transcript of Ellen’s show]

I understand what Reese is saying about how it’s nice to see a young woman in the public sphere who isn’t flashing her bits and pieces, who handles herself with grace, who has “composure.” Reese thinks of herself as a champion for that kind of woman, and… yeah, she probably is. I think Reese is a good role model for young women too – I would argue that Reese is an even better role model than Kate, actually. Reese has a job AND she does charity work AND she’s raising a family. That’s more admirable than, you know, waiting around for a guy for ten years, going on vacation all of the time, and having the bar set so low that you get credit for being “composed.”

Speaking of what in the world Kate does with all of her free time, while Kate was visiting a Liverpool hospital earlier this week, she talked with some kids about their favorite TV shows, and she admitted that she’s a fan of a British reality show called The Only Way Is Essex. I’ve never seen it, but from what I understand, it’s sort of comparable to a Real Housewife show, I think. The show follows B-list and C-list celebrity types who live in Essex, basically. Apparently, Kate “never misses an episode.” Kate has also talked about being a big fan of Downton Abbey too. So… we know what she does all day. She watches TV. Not just TV – she watches reality shows. That would be like finding out Michelle Obama is obsessed with Days of Our Lives. Disappointing, right?

I don’t understand what the big deal with Kate is. What is all the fuss about? Is it because she’s married to William? Or because she’s the next princess since Diana? Is she supposed to follow in Diana’s footsteps charity-wise etc.? I don’t get it.

    • molly says:

The media is desperate for someone like Diana so that is who they are trying to make Kate out to be. Anyone who has kept up the the BRF over the years knows that Kate couldnt be further from Diana in all aspects of her life. Hell, Im pretty sure that the only reason William proposed was because he knew that he was close to 30 and its what was expected of him. He knew that Kate was his only option because she is the only girl stupid enough. I dont believe that he is in love with Kate. He probably did the same thing Charles did with Diana, marry her because its what was expected. The biggest difference was that 19 year old Diana was ready for royal life, and even with Kates 10 years of training ,she still isnt.
And I find it funny that Kate watches a show about WAGs when all she is is a glorified WAG. She must feel a real connection.

    • Mouse says:

I second those thoughts – what’s the big deal? I for one don’t care if she’s at the salon all day long – now if Prince William did the same, that would be an aumsing story: ‘heir to throne can’t step away from manicures’ 🙂

  2. venny says:

    Cute enough story.

Am I the only one who’s bothered by, “I must of tried on…”?

    • Delta Juliet says:

Why be bothered by it? I realize it’s not grammatically correct but let the girl speak freely for Pete’s sake.

    • Emily says:

No. I used to teach 5th grade and had to go over this with my students all the time – even though it sounds like we’re saying must of, should of, or would of, what we are actually supposed to be saying is have.

      • maggiegolightly says:

Isn’t it a error of the transcriber of the interview? It is “must’ve” instead of “must of”.

    • Mouse says:

Maybe what she actually said was “I must’ve tried on”, as in must have, and the person writing the article messed it up. =)

  3. Lucy says:

TOWIE is not like the Real Housewives franchise, it’s scripted reality featuring a bunch of 20 year old twits who are put in situations that are meant to mirror their “real” lives and they have to “act” out the scenes

  4. greenraygirl says:

She looks like a turtle in the first picture.

  5. Rose says:

Oh god, The Only Way I Essex (or Towie as it’s called here) is the worst of the worst. They’re not celebs in any way, just trashy people that they made a faux reality show about, they’re now ‘celebs’ but christ it’s bad. How depressing.

  6. EmmaStoneWannabe says:

Aw I think it’s a cute, feel-good piece. Besides, no matter your role in life, it should be OK to have a little TV time. Maybe Kate watches on Sundays, who knows.

  7. Caitlin's mommy says:

Kate’s posture looks terrible in all of those pictures. She doesn’t really carry herself well at all. She is demure…. But she’s required to be. Royals have pretty strict rules about decorum and dress.

  8. GoodCapon says:

    Indeed she does, Reese.

That TOWIE story is also crap, but I also wouldn’t put it past Kate. TOWIE is not exactly the classiest show but our Duchess is not the height of class either.

  9. jamminatorr says:

Yeah my impression of TOWIE is its closer to a Jersey Shore than a Real Housewives.

  10. jen says:

Downton Abbey is the BEST thing on television.

  11. Jb says:

I miss Reese styling her hair like that. She was so much prettier when she wasn’t trying so hard.

  12. HoustonGrl says:

One of the other things that Reese mentioned in the interview is that she hadn’t heard from Kate because “she’s probably too busy.”

Ok, fine, I’ll let the sycophants be. But Kate is NOT busy. And what proof do we have that she carries herself well? That she dresses demurely and looks pretty? And gets her hair and makeup overdone regularly? We don’t know anything about what she says or does during these visits. Maybe she hasn’t majorly screwed up, but these things are practically scripted.

I’ll give credit when it’s owed.

  13. almond says:

That is a GORGEOUS brown coat. Absolutely love it!

  14. Holly:) says:

Poor Kate. I live in England and ‘The Only Way Is Essex’ is a terrible program. If you want to know why girls my age (15) are so bitchy, stuck up, and want to be as slim as possible and complete tramps just watch one episode of that program. It is terrible.

  15. FeverDream says:

    Composure is overrated.

I liked Kate better when she was partying her ass off screaming “look at me now Wills!” after he dumped her in 07.

  16. Reel Wheel says:

    snorefest

  17. Lissa says:

    Ugghhh, here we go again…

Half of the posters are going to call her lazy jerk whore who stabs kittens and the other half are going to be like “what’s the BFD, she has a fun life…”

It’s a never ending cycle, this girl is either vehemently hated or adored. I think she’s harmless but maybe it would suck to be her sometimes with all this nonsense!

  18. Linney says:

    Grasping at straws to hate.

  19. Hmmm says:

Gah. It’s a shame actors are allowed to open up their mouths cause it just shows how shallow and stupid they can be, not to mention the sucking up. Waity Dolittle has bad posture, which is one of the reasons fancy clothes don’t do anything for her. There is nothing remotely regal about Waity.

What does Reese get out of such blatant flattery for this common as dirt poseur? It shows her for what she is, IMO. And until now, I’ve always been neutral about her.

  20. Sarah says:

This woman bores me to tears and the hype (PR) surrounding her is so fierce that I ask myself “What are they hiding?”
    She’s just average at best.

  21. Lizzie says:

I love this blog, think its great. But I’m not getting the hate for Kate Middleton on here?! I was with my guy 10 years before we got married, does that make me a “waity” too? It just kinda bugs me…..she’s doing her thing, we don’t really know what goes on in that family.

    • Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

I don’t understand, did you marry a prince or are you looking for anonymous absolution?

      • Lissa says:

        Umm…rude!

I don’t think she’s seeking absolution especially from judgy people like you. I think she’s basically saying what’s the BFD about taking your time to get married, with the divorce rate as high as it is, it’s probably a smart thing to do these days. This isn’t 1955 where you are an “old maid” if your not married by 21….jeez lady! Judge much?

And btw I’m happily married to my hubby after dating for nearly 3 years

  22. Barbara says:

whats with the chick and the vanilla wafers on her purse?!?!

  23. The Pirate says:

How come no one else seems to have noticed how hilarious that last picture is??? They both look so funny in it! LOL.

  24. princess says:

God, kate looks so thin compared to resse! She makes resse look like a cow. And she is not even remotely fat. I want to feed kate a cheeseburger!

  25. Laura says:

Please let this be the first and last time TOWIE ever gets any press on this site!

  26. MissVJJ says:

    Love them both! Go Kate!
