Duchess Kate wears brown Orla Kiely for an Oxford visit: adorable or tacky?

Oh, Duchess Kate is going to work her fingers to the bone! Kate has done yet another royal gig – since Prince William left for the Falklands, she’s averaging one a week, isn’t she? It’s not a breakneck pace, but it’s still better then she’s ever done before. These are photos of Kate visiting The Art Room today in Oxford, England. Kate wore shades of cream and chocolate – her dress is by Irish designer Orla Kiely, and the print is allegedly “doves”. Kate paired the dress with brown tights and brown ankle booties, with her hair down of course. Her raccoon eye makeup seems more subdued, as does her usually overdone sausage curls. Maybe she’s relaxing a bit? Here’s more about Kate’s visit:

As a history of art graduate she has always had a passion for the subject. Today the Duchess of Cambridge put her love into practice on her first public engagement as royal patron of The Art Room, which encourages confidence in disadvantaged children.

Wearing the now sold-out Birdie jacquard shirt dress by designer Orla Kiely with brown opaque tights and brown suede ankle boots, Kate, 30, was greeted on her arrival in Oxford by dozens of children waving flags and holding flowers during a short walkabout.

The Duchess’s first visit of the day was to Rose Hill Primary School, where she donned a special pinny with the name ‘Miss Catherine’ embroidered on the front. The area is one of the most deprived in the country and of the 340 pupils at the school 48 per cent speak English as a second language and 50 per cent have a special need. Many are challenged by both.

The Art Room works with children to increase their self-esteem, self-confidence and independence through art. Many of the children are disengaged from mainstream education, disruptive or withdrawn and all have been identified as needing time away from their school. The charity’s emphasis is on teaching life skills while encouraging children and young people to both relate and engage with each other.

The Art Room employs senior practitioners who are trained in psychotherapy, art, teaching and social work. The charity currently works in Oxford and in north London.

At Rose Hill Primary School, The Duchess of Cambridge will join eight children who will be working on the poem The Owl and The Pussycat by Edward Lear. This is a poem that The Art Room uses regularly to incorporate literacy and to discuss travel, relationships, fantasy and ultimately a good way of getting the children to talk. The children will be painting part of the story that they wish to represent onto a canvas.

The Duchess will have the opportunity to talk to all the children as well as observe how The Art Room uses ‘art as therapy’ to help the children manage their difficulties and challenges and help them to communicate and ultimately to re-engage into mainstream education. The Duchess of Cambridge became Patron of The Art Room in January 2012.

Later she will visit another Art Room project at the Oxford Spires Academy School. The round-table session will begin with a presentation by two teenage graduates of The Art Room. The Duchess will then be invited to take part in a training session and round-table discussion about what art as therapy is.

Juli Beatie, who founded the charity ten years ago, said she was thrilled by the Duchess’ s patronage: ‘It is overwhelming. We are one of the smallest charities in the country and the difference she has made already is incalculable. She is a young, independent, intelligent woman who really wants to make a difference.’

[From The Mail]

Yeah, let’s not go overboard, Ms. Beatie. Kate made a good appearance, she seemed engaged and interested (as opposed to just staring blankly at people, playing with her hair and blinking furiously, otherwise known as “The Middleton Method”), and I’ll give her solid marks for showing such an interest in such a wonderful charity. But don’t describe Kate as “independent.” Please.

I swear she looks 10 years younger without all that eyeliner. I think the look is fitting for the occasion, and it looks good on her. She looks GREAT!

  2. Quinn says:

It would be weird to know your only real purpose in life is to dress up and be seen various places. Very odd life.

    • Agnes says:

i know, isn’t it? surreal and sort of useless? weird.

    • constance says:

Agreed. After all that “college” stuff and chasing around Wills, she got what she wanted, to be a smile, a picture, and good for nothing. I hope they at least enjoy each other and perhaps the family they have to fill out paperwork to have. A lot of effort wasted, imo. She could have shacked up with a billionaire and had a lot more fun. lol

    • NancyMan says:

I think you’re being harsh, She’s not exactly being useless. She’s starting to do what most Princes and Princesses do. She’s using her status to support worthy organizations and she’s being a goodwill ambassador. Alot of people may benefit from her efforts. She may not be digging ditches in a third world country. But, its better than spending her days at the Starbucks.

      • Susannah says:

Yes, the Duchess works for charity but she can also just work. It’s not as if she is bound to charity. Why doesn’t she start a business or industry that can give her countrymen jobs and skills?
Oh wait a minute, I’m talking about Waity. Yeah, never mind.

      • Summer says:

Susannah, before you start with your Kate hate comments, how about you actually understand her position and what she can and can’t do? she can no more start a business or an industry than I can fly to the moon. She’s a member of the British Royal Family with very prescribed guidelines about what is expected of her. Which is basically to support William, have children, do charity work and not to bring the monarchy into disrepute. Its not to be a UK version of a Kardashian and run around flogging products or whatever you think she should be doing.

      • Booboocita says:

The real problem here is not that she’s not doing enough, nor even that she doesn’t want to do more, but that “the Firm” won’t let her do more. And it’s not because they don’t think she can handle it, or that they’re trying to “ease” her into her duties rather than throw her into the deep end as they did with Diana.

The real issue is that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, as they’ve been styled, have consistently overshadowed everything every other member of the Royal Family has ever done, including Camilla. Prince Charles is utterly determined that Camilla will be accepted as “Queen Camilla” someday, something he fears will not happen if everyone keeps hearkening back to the halcyon days of Diana and comparing the two, with Camilla coming out the worse. If/When Camilla finally gets the opportunity to be crowned, Charles fears that the UK papers will be full of, “oh, what if it were Diana?” and Camilla will never be accepted as Queen Consort.

Camilla has a fairly punishing regime of public appearances, charity sponsorships and other good works — but who cares, when all Kate has to do is flip her hair and the press comes running? Hell, William gets more coverage just doing his job flying an Apache helicopter than Charles ever does doing all he does to support the Queen. Charles and Camilla could win Nobel Prizes, and all anyone would care about is what Kate will wear to the ceremony.

Kate’s duties are kept light so that Camilla will have more chances to shine, and to quell the already fairly noisy clamor for the throne to skip a generation and go to Prince William. And rightly so. How many times does Kate make an appearance on this and other blogs? When was the last time Camilla rated a post of her own — unless Kate was standing next to her?

[PS Most of this info comes from a couple of books: The Final Curtsey, written by a cousin of the Queen, the Honorable Margaret Rhoades and now being serialized in the Daily Mail online, and A Brief Life of the Queen by Robert Lacey. Fascinating reads. I also read the UK papers from time to time; the Telegraph, the Guardian and the Daily Mail have all done riffs on the above.]

  3. G says:

    Adorable.

  4. Ailine says:

Can we not call grown women adorable? She’s not a child or a golden retriever. She looks pretty.

  5. Jackie says:

her bird legs coming out of those clunky boots look ridic.

    like the dress.

  6. Franny says:

    another huge button coat…

    • Kaiser says:

Yes, she still has The Button Problem. I didn’t feel like mentioning it – it’s her “thing.” The girl loves gigantic buttons.

      • Isabella says:

Hahaha I thought of the button problem that you’ve mentioned in previous posts about her….just gave me a good chuckle.

Overall, I don’t like that outfit on her; I feel it ages her.
Yes, it’s appropriate and all, but she could stand to dress a bit more youthful and yet remain appropriate. It seems her outfits lately are similar.

Her hair and makeup look great though, I’ll give her that.

  7. spitfire says:

It’ll be great if she can do one job, one performance, without once touching her damn hair! It’s so annoying!

  8. Cerulean says:

I don’t like the outfit. I’d love to see her in a ponytail, bun or something. It would have made the outfit better. Her brown hair is the same and distracting especially since she’s doing a study in brown.

  9. HadleyB says:

Love it, maybe the booties could of been a bright color like red or something .. not sure but over all I like it.

Would of looked cute with a side pony too, I don’t see her makeup as extreme over the top Kardashianeque so don’t get all the hate over eyeliner .. Ive seen more heavy handed on Bravo shows and Jersey Shore .. and Kate has better clothes.

    • Suze says:

Compared to the Kardashians and Snooki, yes, her eyeliner is typically almost restrained. She’s a royal, not a reality star (although those two roles may be converging.)

Here, at this event, I think her eyeliner is perfect. Restrained and pretty and I agree with the above poster who said she looks much younger here than she usually does.

I like the dress, too. Hate the boots but that’s just me.

  10. EmmaStoneWannabe says:

Aw she looks cute. Think the dress looks great on her and is suitable for the occasion.

  11. Jackson says:

The dress is fine. Hate the short booties with it, but I hate that look in general. Nice knee-high boots would have worked a lot better or a chunky pump. Same old, same old on the hair and makeup.

  12. spinner says:

She looks wonderful. So fresh & lovely. Looks like she is easing into her royal duties nicely.

  13. Sara says:

    Lovely as always.

  14. bea says:

    Love Orla K!

Those boots look really cute with that. She almost always looks chic, modern and age-appropriate.

  15. txmom says:

I think she is starting to get the hang of this (whatever this is, exactly, to be a royal bride in this day and age). And she looks less skeletal. Maybe not skeletal at all!

  16. Ravensdaughter says:

Not tacky! I am a sucker for brown. I can actually wear it (and so can Kate, apparently). I like the short boots, too.
I love her “Breck Girl” haor. If I had someone to style it, I’d wear it long, too.
Looks like Bea (#14) and I are in the same page.

  17. ClumsyMe says:

I think she looks pretty good here. I really like that dress.

  18. Abby says:

She looks lovely. My sister in law just got into graduate school to do art therapy. Most people she knows are all “what’s that? you’re going to be an art teacher?” So we’re kind of excited Duchess Kate picked this charity. Maybe it’ll bring awareness to this type of therapy.

  19. Ann Carter says:

    Faboosh. Just adorable.

  20. Ann Carter says:

    Faboosh, as always. Just adorable.

  21. SamiHami says:

    She looks really good here.

  22. LAK says:

@ hadleyb ……..could of been…… would of been

Sorry to snark but the correct phrase should read ‘could have been’ and would have been or if you are abbreviating…’could’ve been’ and ‘would’ve been’ Definitely not ‘could of been’ or would of been’

it’s maddening to see otherwise seemingly well educated people using this grammatically wrong terminology in English blogs, let alone American ones.

  23. HoustonGrl says:

I think the outfit is cute. I really like the fact that Kate is going to all these events, it bodes well for her. I hope she continues to do this. She seems way more relaxed at this event than at the others.

    • GoodCapon says:

As their patron she is required to go to all these events after all! 😉

She had a decade to build up her reputation as a lazy, workshy woman whose only goal in life is to get that One Ring. Attending a few charities is not going to change my opinion of her as being nothing more than a glorified WAG.

      • Reece says:

One Ring to rule them all
        One Ring to find them
One Ring to bring them all
And in the darkness bind them

        LOL

      • HoustonGrl says:

I tried so hard not to say anything mean about Kate for once. You’re onto me, hahaha ;o)

Don’t get me wrong, I totally think she’s a WAG – and extremely over-glorified to the point of Sainthood. I think she’s accomplished very little during her “Reign.” But, I’ve always promised to give credit when it’s owed, and I do believe she is trying now. Yes, it’s very little and very late, but at least she’s doing something (whether or not it’s on her own volition is another matter).

On another note, I think it’s kind of pathetic that she gets so much praise for just “doing something.” Kate is the nation’s baby, i.e., she takes her first steps and everyone claps. But that’s only because the bar for her has been set so low.

      • GoodCapon says:

        Agreed.

It constantly amazes me the amount of praise she gets from doing little things (in comparison to other hard-working royals) like these. From the way people go on and on about her, she is not a 30 year old woman but rather a toddler in disguise who had just taken her first steps.

  24. Celebasshat says:

    Well done Duchess Eyeliner

  25. Cathy says:

I don’t know if I like what she’s wearing or not. That color just turns my stomach. She seems to have a button fetish, but of course there are wierder things to have fetishes about. So buttons ain’t bad. I definately don’t like those shoes…ewwww.

  26. Linda says:

The dress is way to old for her. Love the stockings and boots hair and makeup, but the dress is for a granmother.

  27. normades says:

Love Orla Keily, especially her retro swimsuits.

  28. Reel Wheel says:

You know what is more boring than Kate Middleton? These “stories” about Kate Middleton.

There should just be a template that reads:

Today, the Duchess appeared at [insert], with [insert], wearing [insert]. She also wore her hair down [insert with or without fascinator]

    The End.

  29. Amy says:

    Adorable. Love it.

  30. Alarmjaguar says:

    I.want.that.dress!

  31. Reece says:

It needs a different belt to break up the pattern. The shoes are ok. Not much of a bootie fan in general so…yeah I got nothing else.
    The charity sounds very interesting!

I need to google her button problem.

  32. Lee says:

She looks great. Adorable dress and the boots are a great touch – a bit unexpected, but trendy and very cute. Sigh. Wish I had the legs for booties.

  33. terrytoons says:

I like the outfit and LOVE those ankle boots. Her footwear choices are perfect.

  34. ladybert62 says:

The dress is OK – not great.

    The boots are horrible.

  35. Jaxx says:

    Want. Those. Booties.

  36. Luise says:

Buttons, tack and sausage curl extensions.

  37. Lila says:

That is WAY too much brown. Seriously girl. Pick a color.

  38. Sachi says:

    Boring.

And would she please do something with her hair so she can quit touching it? It’s so distracting seeing her talking to people while flicking and touching her hair. She comes across as juvenile and insecure always bothering with her hair and hiding behind that big mass of curls.

Her posture is so terrible. There is one photo of her looking like she is purposefully hunching her back to fight against the wind blowing her away. She looked ridiculous. Her legs are still thin as toothpicks and the shorter hem of the skirt emphasizes her stick-thin legs.

Seriously, why does she walk like this?
    http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2012/02/21/article-2104227-11D6CB73000005DC-971_306x557.jpg

It’s like her big hair is tipping her back and she’s fighting to stay upright. Her neck is straining forward while her body is leaned back. Head is still too big compared to her body.

Still, she worked today. So good for her…I guess. Maybe she can actually work better without William when she doesn’t have to follow him around all the time. It will motivate her to be better prepared about the events and she will be able to hold her own without William taking the lead all the time.

    • Susannah says:

Yes, toothpick legs are scaring me. She almost disappears from the side, even with that heavy coat/dress thing on.

Does she ever wear pants? Especially in London in February. Nice slacks and a tailored overcoat would be nice. Must she always wear a dress and platform shoes? She must be scaring the kids…giant toothpick princess.

  39. Kim says:

It was tasteful. Even though I dont always love her style one thing she never does is dresses tacky/innappropriate/to revealing.

    • Susannah says:

The fabric looks quite like the cover on my car seats.

Dress is cut like a child’s: high waist, full skirt, big buttons

It seems that she dresses either too old or too young. I wish she would take a look at Princess Charlene’s wardrobe.

  40. Karen says:

Almost all of the pictures where she is touching her hair are taken outside, she is probably trying to keep the wind from blowing it into her lip gloss. I like what she is wearing. After the fiasco with Princess Diana they are letting her ease slowly into Royal Life. Diana never had that chance.

  41. christinne says:

why is she wearing Queen’s table cloth again?

  42. Diane says:

Kate looks wonderful — as usual! Fab dress. Although I like knee-high boots better, the short ones look fine on her.

  43. Christine says:

It’s hard seeing Diana’s ring on her. Yeah, Diana’s ring.

  44. Devon says:

It was quite warm in England today. Walking around London today, I was sweating in a sweater & jacket. She’s appropriately dressed for the weather.

I just don’t get the hate for her. She met a guy, fell in love and got married. Yes she married a prince and they waited awhile to get hitched but would anyone honestly not want her life for even a few days? She will never have to worry about money. She will be able to work on things that mean something to her rather than just a pay cheque. Her kids will have everything they will ever want and need. She’ll be able to make a difference. Doesn’t sound to bad to me. I don’t think there would be many who would turn her life down or would turn their nose at the possibility of being Queen one day. She may have had a plan. But wouldn’t you?

    • Karma says:

I don’t get all the hate about her either. She seems like a lovely young lady who genuinely loves her husband. And when his brother comes around they clearly have fun together.

All the comments about her makeup and clothes are weirdly harsh. She dresses appropriately for her position. She has to think about who she is representing now and is always stylish and even thoughtful in her choices. Her heavier eyeliner is to be expected with the various environments she is photographed in. The whole point of inviting a royal is the photo-op. If she looks washed out then who wants that on their wall?

I thought all the hate for her was just a Daily Mail thing. Wow…was I wrong.

And yes, if she had a plan to snag a prince then good for her. Everyone else is just lying if they say they wouldn’t do the same.

      • ggh says:

Can’t stand her, she was praised for years for being PW’s mattress warmer, she never worked ,never had a interest besides William. This girl is lacking, she’s just too vapid and Wag like for words. She was just a gold digging title chaser who slept her way into the position by practically stalking the prince until he caved in. She looks awful to me, skinny like a stick insect and so common behaving, always touching her hair. She has to be one of the most overrated women out their. She is still trying to get it togther at 30, I give this marriage 5years before Kate starts wanting out. She is not cut out for this role, it is one where a person has to give, she is a taker, so it will never work.

  45. Loralei says:

She always dresses like an old lady. And those buttons! They’re usually fabric covered. Her clothing still reminds me of Nancy Reagan.
The whole monarchy system is antiquated and should be abolished. The people of Great Britain are paying for her elaborate lifestyle! The royal family is essentially on
    welfare.
I do think she is quite pretty though.

  46. Mara says:

This is one ugly outfit and she is so thin no shape at all but she is pretty .

  47. Jane says:

Can we please lay off Kate for a little bit? This request may be the direct result of the fact I am a huge Anglophile but come on, what do you want her to do??

  48. ggh says:

She could get some class but that would be impossible, since I’ve seen her tacky socialclimbing family and Kate is just so out of her depth. Pr.William wanted someone lacking so he would look better with his lazy butt.
