Ben Affleck: “I wanted to do more with my life than just make movies & make money”

Actor/director Ben Affleck has joined Facebook, partially to raise awareness for his new Eastern Congo Initiative nonprofit. I had the eye-opening experience of seeing Ben Affleck’s “Nightline” special in 2008, in which he made his third trip to the Democratic Republic of Congo to see the terrible effects of war on the Eastern Congolese people. The atrocities that Ben heard about were unbelievable, and you could see how much it moved him and how surprised he was that there were people who could do such horrible things. Ben has since gone to the Congo several more times, he shot a short documentary there that he premiered at the UN, he’s written an essay for Time, and he founded the Eastern Congo Initiative in 2010. He told People that he wants to make a difference in the world now that he has children:

The actor, 39, founded the Eastern Congo Initiative in 2010 and recently got back from his eighth trip to the war-torn region. Affleck says it’s his kids, Violet, 6 and Seraphina, 3, who inspire him to do good in the world.

“I got to a point in my life where I felt like I had been very fortunate,” Affleck tells PEOPLE in an interview for the Feb. 27 issue, on newsstands now.

“And I wanted to do something more with my life than just make movies and try to make money. I wanted to do something that was important to me in other ways and would serve as an example to my kids.”

Wednesday, Affleck launched a Facebook timeline to share pictures and stories from his trips to Africa. His nonprofit helps support Congolese-led organizations helping to rebuild the region, from groups aiding former child soldiers to those supplying health care to the most vulnerable.

“The people there are working as hard as they can to make their lives better,” says Affleck. “And that’s inspiring.”

As for his own kids, Affleck says he shows them where he’s going on a map when he travels to Africa. Says the actor: “I tell them it’s important to be involved in the world in ways that help others and not just yourself.”

I’m so impressed by Ben’s commitment to this cause, and it seems like he’s genuinely concerned and has done a lot of hard work behind the scenes. This guy used to be persona non grata in Hollywood post Bennifer, but he put his head down and emerged better for it. He could have done so much more to rehab his image, but he seemed more concerned about becoming a better person and that has made all the difference.

Ben’s wife Jennifer looks like she’s due any day now. I have to admit I’m excited to see whether she’ll have a boy or a girl. Either way, Ben will be surely thrilled.

In a very superficial side note, do you guys like the new Facebook “timeline” format? I don’t, and I usually try to embrace change but it just seems distracting and harder to follow to me. I like things that are linear, and “timeline” should be, but it fills the page with photos and different features and it’s hard to tell what’s new. Still, it’s good to see Ben on Facebook.

Great job Ben and I am impressed as well. Good for him.

  2. TheOriginalVictoria says:

It sounds awesome that he is doing this. Like it did with Brad, it raises him a bit in my eyes to be so personally involved and it comes across as genuine. Good for you Ben. I actually might buy some of your movies.

I love it when people with means, get out of their bubble to explore more of the world, and find ways to be helpful.

Like the Princes, William and Harry. Always found it wonderful that no matter their elitist upbringing, they find ways to be “of service” to people. Whether helicopter rescue, AIDS awareness, rebuilding shelters, etc. They’re not just playing polo!

  3. Ravensdaughter says:

    Excellent!-kudos to Ben.

  4. carrie says:

between Jessica Simpson and Jennifer Garner,it’s all about who is more pregnant

    • Bermuda Blues says:

Both pregnancies emphasizing how NOT pregnant Beyonce was, who happened to announce her “bump” right around the same time as both Jessica and Jennifer (and Princess Victoria who only just gave birth today). Somehow Beyonce went from no pregnancy to full on labor in, what- 4 months?

  5. Laurabb says:

HATE the new timeline for the same reasons.

    • Maguita says:

Ditto! Hard to follow. I prefer things a bit more “square” and clean. The new format has too much info jumping at you. Makes me lose interest.

  6. Gossip PHD says:

Bet the weird hat is to cover hair plug surgery. Ashton Kutcher wore one for months and then boom- he has a full head of hair.

  7. Asli says:

Kudos, Ben. Luckily I don’t have the new Facebook timeline-thingy but a friend of mine has and it’s very distracting.

  8. Dorothy#1 says:

That is wonderful he is doing this!! Plus he looks super hot right now! I love the long hair and beard 🙂

  9. TheOriginalVictoria says:

Seriously, I need receipts of Ashton and Ben balding. I keep hearing this and see nothing.

  10. mln76 says:

He bugs me for many reasons but I think he’s sincere about this.
Oh and yes I hate the timeline.

    • Molly says:

He bugs me too. But I’m going to give him the benefit of the doubt solely because of your comment.

Otherwise I was going to say he did it to distract from banging Blake Lively. Or a way to try to get into Angelina Jolie’s pantsuit. Affleck seems eternally dissatisfied.

  11. normades says:

I like Timeline. The layout is very clean and more visual. But I wish fb would give you a choice and that there were more layout options (and pretty colors 🙂

Isn’t Jen/Ben supposed to be that blind where the wife takes college courses so she can “keep up” with her brainier hubs?

    • Alarmjaguar says:

See, I disagree. I felt like myspace did that, and what I liked about FB was that it didn’t. I, too, just want the info in a straightforward way. I wish FB would quit changing things up. Urg, grumpy old lady!

  12. Dawn says:

I’ve always liked this guy and a few of my friends who have run into him in person in Chicago and LV have nothing but nice things to say about him. I think this is their boy whose coming and I think he will be a darling baby! I’m happy for them.

  13. Bite me says:

Bravo Ben … Keep up the good work

  14. Girl says:

He’s always struck me as kind of an idiot. Good for him though for trying to make a positive difference.

  15. Ari says:

Hate the new timeline as well wish I could go back to the good old days

  16. Aiobhan says:

I didn’t know anything about his charity work. I think that is it great what he is doing to get the word out about what is going on over there. He seems sincere and not another celebrity choosing a 3rd world nation to boost up their fame.

I only pay Cafeworld on Facebook so I cannot comment on the Timeline thingy.

  17. MS says:

    Awesomeness! Kudos to Ben!

  18. MJ says:

They haven’t forced Timeline on me yet, but I saved this link because I know it’s inevitable:

    http://lifehacker.com/5885858/how-to-get-rid-of-facebook-timeline-bring-back-a-simpler-profile-view

It’s an article about a free plug-in that allows you to view Facebook without Timeline.

  19. EmmaStoneWannabe says:

Yes, this makes Ben seem so much more tolerable as a person. This actually makes me like him as a person, whereas before, just thought he was kinda a dbag Hwood player who was trying to work things out w his wife. Love this story!

    • Carolyn says:

I like him..he seems to have matured. I really liked The Town. Hopefully he’s not still a douche behind the scenes. I like him and his family and hope they’re the real deal. At least he’s not spending his time buying Bentleys, jewellery and crowing about it as so many superficial celebs do.

  20. layla says:

I hated the new timeline at first too… and thought it was all jumbled and not clear. And then i got used to it, and it is very clear and linear… just in a different way than the previous format.

  21. original sandy says:

i have always loved ben,, he’s a great actor, and handsome/smart guy, what’s not to like? his personal life was not my concern, as long as he is a nice person in real life, someone up thread says he is, that’s enough for me.

  22. Holly Hobby says:

I’ve hopped onto some of my friends’ pages and they had the timeline. Talk about sensory overload. I just don’t know which part I should focus first. No thanks.

Ben should get a hair cut.

  23. Belle says:

Hate timeline… glad I’m not the only one!

Have always been a Ben Affleck fan… and love JG as well, so when they married, I was quite pleased:) Kudos to Ben on the charity work, sounds as though he has worked hard, and as pointed out, done a lot behind the scenes…. not trying to get ‘credit’ for his efforts.

Also, glad to see Jennifer is still out and about, as I’m sure it isn’t easy as I do think that baby will be born soon!

  24. Rhiley says:

I have started to like Ben a lot more especially after watching a very good interview he did on Sunday Morning last year. He has the blue collar work ethic of Mark Walberg but he also seems smart and sensitive to other (unlike Walberg). You can tell he cares a lot about his family as: his wife and girl, his mom, his [creepy?]brother.

  25. I’ve learn a few excellent stuff here. Certainly worth bookmarking for revisiting. I wonder how so much attempt you set to make one of these great informative site.
