Emma Roberts gets bitchy about nepotism, which is “obviously not true”

wenn3393888

This week, Kaiser gave us a fresh reminder of just how nasty, rude, and obnoxious Julia Roberts can really be, and it seems that her niece (and daughter of Eric Roberts) is well on the path to claiming that portion of the family legacy. Generally speaking, we already know that Emma is both entitled and smug and 20 going on 12, but now she takes issue with people (primarily those nefarious bloggers) who dare to insinuate that her family name has helped her get movie roles. You see, this notion is simply “so ridiculous” and “obviously not true” even though Emma seems to have forgotten that her role in Valentine’s Day most definitely came as a result of Aunt Julia’s involvement.

Outside of that bit role in a box-office slam dunk, Emma’s effort to prove some cred of her own has faltered miserably. Sure, she’s a serviceble enough little puppet in roles like Nancy Drew and Hotel for Dogs, but she doesn’t really shine and comes off as very easily replaceable onscreen. Last year, It’s Kind of a Funny Story failed to recoup its budget even though Emma walked around in her bra and panties throughout the movie. (Don’t forget that she still insists that actresses who go topless are “tasteless”. Emma’s also got a movie coming out this weekend, The Art of Getting By (she plays a popular high school girl that decides to date a misfit), which is currently sitting at 21% on Rotten Tomatoes. Still, let’s not even mention the possibility that Aunt Julia has anything at all to do with Emma Roberts getting either of these roles as a romantic leading lady because she spoke to Popeater and proved us all wrong:

Did you go to school?
I went to school till seventh grade and then I was home schooled through high school.

Was it strange to play a high school student?
I mean, no because high school is such a big part of American culture, it’s so prevalent in music and TV and movies, I think I get the gist!

In the beginning did everyone accuse you of nepotism because of your dad and aunt?
A lot of people think that and they talk about nepotism which I think is so ridiculous considering it’s obviously not true, because I’ve auditioned for so many things and never gotten the part. Also it’s like, you know, maybe someone can get you one part but they can’t really get you ten parts.

Would you want to work with her?
Yes I would love to. I think it would be really fun for us.

You know you’ll be accused of nepotism if it happens.
Oh well, if someone wants to say that to my face. If someone blogs about it I’ll be annoyed. I think it’s so funny people will blog stuff but they won’t say it to your face. I would actually have more respect for them if they said it to my face, then I would probably not say anything back.

Are you immune to nasty comments online or do you still get upset?
I don’t read them anymore but obviously you know that they’re there. For me I can’t let it bother me because for me anyone hiding behind a computer is kind of irrelevant.

Or a loser.
Uh uh. Also I can handle it, but there are some people with the whole bullying thing can’t handle it and do horrible things to themselves.

How come there are no photos of you tripping outside a nightclub?
I love going to Europe because you’re allowed to go out. I’m not trying to go out to be a mess but I love to go dancing and in Europe I’m old enough to be allowed to go out dancing with my friends. I love London, it’s my favorite place.

[From Popeater]

Okay, Emma’s clearly on the defensive (and in denial) here about the fact that a famous name might not get you everywhere in Hollywood (see Angus Sutherland), but it will get your foot in the door. This is particularly the case when talent is not a huge factor, which is the case where Emma is concerned. Seriously, in a Hollywood where even Rumer Willis can get consistent work, nobody can claim that nepotism doesn’t exist. Rumer isn’t an awful actress, but she isn’t any good either, but standards are really low for those with a family name. One really has to be a bad as poor Angus to lose that initial golden foothold. Of course, I generally feel a slight pang of guilt for giving Emma some crap here because it’s not like she’s headed the way of the Crackhead Lohan in her early twenties. Still, the girl needs to appreciate where she came from and learn a little humility. Hopefully, that’ll come with age.

Incidentally, Emma also claims in the Popeater interview to wear heels “24/7,” but I guess that doesn’t include the below photograph, which was taken less than a month ago. Don’t judge!

I saw her in SCREAM 4 and she’s nothing special as a performer. Looks wise, she’s average. The only reason she’s gotten as far as she has is the Roberts connection.

  2. brin says:

I saw this little gem yesterday and was hoping you would do a write up on it.
All she is known for is being Julia (Bitch) Robert’s entitled niece. The rotten apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

  3. bunny says:

Yeah, she cannot act but neither can her aunt. She is average looking and they only reason she is in movies is because of Julia.

  4. Dave in MN says:

How is someone supposed to get close enough to her to say things to her face? Call her agent and say, “Yes, I’d like to make an appointment with Ms. Roberts to accuse her of nepotism. Can you get me a lunch?” I would totally do it except, well, I live in MN. What a stupid thing to say.

  5. LucyOriginal says:

Ok, Emma. Your wish is my command! If I have the unpleasant surprise of bumping into you on the streets, I will say to you what I think about you. Then, I hope you will take it well and show the respect you claim you have for people who say what they think about you to your face! 🙂

  6. zesty says:

I’d be more than happy to say it to her face.

  7. Sloane Wyatt says:

Great post title! I cracked up. Little Miss I’ve earned everything I’ve got needs to start a support group with Miley Cyrus, maybe something along the lines of SWOON (“Starlets Who Obviously Obtain Work without Nepotism”).

  8. Rhiley says:

“It’s like, you know…” It’s obvious she only went to school through the seventh grade.

  9. original kate says:

i see emma’s inherited aunt julia’s high opinion of herself. i’m betting in 10 years emma will be horselaughing her way through movies and sleeping with married men whilst wearing t-shirts that insult their wives. who’s with me?

  10. You don't say says:

Don’t know much about her, but that one photo looks like her ankles are about to snap in those dreadful shoes. The platforms look stuck on with super glue. Is he having trouble walking?

  11. Lora says:

I’ve always found her so annoying. She’s just not a good actress.

  12. lucy2 says:

The interviewer was goading her a bit with those questions, but she certainly fell for it. She sounds immature and snotty. A better (and more truthful) way to answer is to say it probably helped get her foot in the door, but after that she’s had to get by on her abilities. Because from day 1, she was known as Julia’s niece, Eric’s daughter. Of course it helped.

I think I’ve seen her in a few things, but honestly can’t remember. She seems sort of forgettable and replaceable, at least right now. Who knows, maybe someday she’ll surprise everyone, but until then, don’t act like all this is due to some amazing talent and nothing more.

  13. kieslowski says:

@Dave you are so right!!! This is such a joke.

WHen she switched agencies to CAA (surprise, surprise that she would be represented by her aunt’s powerfull agents) deadlinhollywood.com made this big deal about it and how she is the NEXT BIG THING! What a joke. But trust me she will be fored upon us for the years to come.

  14. serena says:

    I love her dress!

  15. garvels says:

No wonder so many lack luster movies are being produced in Hollywood these days when you have a machine like CAA promoting the spawn of the Hollywood elite as the next big thing. Ms. Roberts should realize that star quality is earned through true talent and hard work not from family ties. I would strongly advise Ms. Roberts to go back to school and train for another line of work.

  16. Dave in MN says:

@Rhiley: I know, right? So is eloquence, like, totally dead or whatever?

  17. DSMR says:

It is obvious she is were she is at due to name recognition, much like the Smith offspring. In the end her only saving grace will be that besides Paris Hilton, she will keep shoe customizers busy making shoes for those gargantuan feet.

  18. TG says:

So we are all losers because we think she is an entitled bitch? Not all of us are in the industry and have the opportunity to tell this to her face but we would if we could.

  19. Anna says:

What I hate most about entitled celebrities masterful at denial is the line “I don’t pay any attention to all the hate online, because it’s said by bitter people who hide behind computers.” As if those people would have any reservations saying it to her face if they had the chance. You can’t encase yourself in a bubble and call everyone outside of it irrelevant.
Does anyone remember the interview where someone asked her “were you popular in high school?” and she said “yes I was very, I picked and choosed [sic] who I hung out with”? This girl is a profoundly irritating brat.

  21. Jackson says:

She strikes me as rather snotty. And common.

  22. kira says:

Yeah, I don’t know how far she would have gotten without aunty Julia shilling for her. I watched a movie with her and I was not that impressed. But I see she’s also inherited her aunt’s bitchy attitude. 🙂

  23. Eve says:

Popeater: Would you want to work with her (Julia Roberts)?

Emma Roberts: Yes I would love to. I think it would be really fun for us.

And a living hell for everyone else!

  24. bluhare says:

Way to go Emma! Give an interview to Popeater and insult everyone who reads it!

  25. Kara Ann says:

I am just crying buckets of tears having found out that I’m a irrelevant and bitter person hiding behind my computer….(sob)….all this time, I thought I was just the average American using the internet as cheap entertainment where I could connect with all sorts of people, usually about sh*t that doesn’t matter at all. (Sniff, sniff)…Feeling a little better as I realize that Emma is sh*t that doesn’t matter at all.

  26. The Other Katherine says:

GOD. Auntie Julia is bad enough — do we have to have this sophomoric twit foisted on us as well? Someone please tell this child to go away.

  27. jo says:

God you guys rock!! I agree with all of you the only one in the family that can act is her Dad Eric..

  28. TeeTee says:

bitchiness and TUDE much really run rampant in that family..

I’ll say it to ya face, lil girl..AND I love ya daddy!! NOW what???–LOL

    she’s tough huh?

  29. Dingles says:

Is she serious? “…maybe someone can get you one part but they can’t really get you ten parts.”

If someone in your family gets you ONE job, that is nepotism. And in most professional arenas, acting included, often all you need is that one break to get your foot in the door and build success. There are thousands of wannabe actors and actresses out there who would kill for just one part.

What a spoiled, ungrateful, entitled little bitch. If her last name wasn’t Roberts she’d be waitressing at Applebees for headshot money and hustling from audition to audition just like every other aspiring actress. Apparently she’s the only person deluded enough to not realize it.

  30. Chris says:

Since when was nepotism in Hollywood a crime? The place is rife with it.

  31. Louise says:

I don’t think Emma owes every role to her aunt and father. They helped get her foot in the door but she’s getting hired for a reason. A lot of relatives of famous people don’t have any success. Connections only get you so far.

  32. Kim says:

I will glady tell this untalented ingrate to her face that she gets her jobs mainly because of nepotism. Nepotism opened the door for her. She may still have to audition etc but having a famous aunt call in favors is what she has that most others dont.

She should just be honest & grateful and say yes my connections have helped me.

She is not a good actress so time will show her career was based on nepotism.

  33. REALIST says:

Loved Emma in “Nancy Drew”. She’s young, she’s got a ways to go, but she has a comedic touch (and a normal sized mouth..)
Re: benefactors of nepotism or at least being from an “acting dynasty”: Michael Douglas, Robert Downey, Jr., Matthew Broderick, Melanie Griffith, Jane and Peter Fonda, Bridget Fonda, Drew Barrymore, Natascha and Joely Richardson, etc. etc etc. These people aren’t working for the government (where nepotism should not exist)-this is Hollywood!

  34. jane16 says:

Nasty little baggage. Also, not a good actress and while she’s pretty, she’s not “special”. Think back to the 80’s when Aunt Julia hit the big time. Remember Mystic Pizza? Dumb movie, but Julia just glowed when she was young. She was beautiful, and also had charisma. Her niece does not have what she had. Also her remarks on nepotism are a laugh. My hubbie is one of the few people I know who has moved up thru the movie industry without having any relatives to give him boosts along the way.

  35. kibbles says:

She’s another potential Blake Lively or Jennifer Aniston type. Although, Emma will have to backtrack on a lot of her snide comments to match even Blake Lively’s career. Emma would need to get breast implants, sleep with producers and A-list stars, appear topless on the cover of magazines, or leak nude photos to get the type of attention Lively is getting. Note that the Lively types never get ahead due to talent but because of their body, dating life, and sex scandals.

  36. taxi says:

She’s very average looking & wouldn’t attract notice among any high school class. I saw previews for “Nancy Drew” and have avoided seeing her in anything else – certainly nothing I’d have to pay for.

  37. RHONYC says:

if they cast this lil’ runt in the sequel to ‘Pretty Woman’
(working title ‘Pretty Woman – Hoeing Never Sleeps’)
i’m gonna burn my SAG card!

    well…

i don’t actually ‘have’ a SAG card, but if i did i totally would!!!

    grrrr.

    😈

  38. dj says:

I didn’t go to school since 7th grade “but I think I get the gist of it.” No, really Emma you have not. Seeing it on TV & movies will give you an impression which does not replace actually going to proms, real exams, a room full of hormones and acne, and teasing from a bunch of people who do not give a crap who you are related to unless it is the principle! She also thinks she gets the gist of being an actress by being related to one!

  39. Whatamess! says:

    jeez!u guyz really diss!

  40. jocuri says:

@ seren , I agree with you her dress is incredible, and you know what ? I know where you can get it 🙂

  41. geekychick says:

and you don’t like kstew?! i’m sorry, but this girl comes off as snobish entitled brat. she has the same set of mind as a 16yr me-i grew out of it by the time i was18-you’re supposed to get OUT of puberty! side note: as someone who has been diagnosed with depression at 22,and is still coming off an episode,i found ‘it’s kind..’ offensivly downplaying it-and her take especially.

  42. L says:

“Uh uh. Also I can handle it, but there are some people with the whole bullying thing can’t handle it and do horrible things to themselves.”

I don’t like what she has to say there. I don’t think she meant to do it but she is kind of putting down the kids that get bullied or anyone that has ever been bullied as just a “weak person” and herself as strong…she doesn’t know real bullying then, IMO.

  43. ol cranky says:

It’s more than just get a chance to read or getting casting when she wouldn’t. she, like many other children shilled by their uberfamous celebrity relatives, gets a disproportionate amount of coverage for every role she has and red carpet walk she makes regardless of how small the role is.

In many cases, someone will be cast not because they have the skill to pull off the part but solely because they have name recognition and the notice that they’ve even been cast in a role starts the publicity machine (this applies to Emma Roberts as well as to Rumor Willis, most “singers” who get cast in movies with limited or no acting talent and reality tv celebrities). The Smith children are a whole different story because their parents shove them down everyone’s throats.

There are a whole lot of celebrity actor/musician offspring who seem to get cast and work without this extra attention driven by their famous celebrity parents. They seem to own who they are and then go on to prove themselves with their talent, not by doing interviews about how they may be related to someone but they earned their roles and pull them off well. Someone like Mamie Gummer is an example of this.

  44. Cuchulain says:

yeah…o.k! Delusional drama messes runs in the family genes as well.

  45. Welldun says:

Haven’t seen her in anything yet so have no opinion but I just finally saw The Dark Knight and her dad is still the hotness

  46. observer says:

Gwyneth Paltrow should mentor her on how to handle peasants who make such ignorant comments. LOL.

  47. Maja says:

I can’t comment on her acting abilities because I haven’t seen her in any movie (at least I don’t remember) but she should be careful as to what she’s saying in her interviews.

First of all, saying that her name doesn’t matter is not a smart move. She would come across as more likable and modest if she said that it helped her but now she’s trying to prove that she can also make it on her own.

Secondly, be careful not to call EVERYONE behind a computer as “irrelevant” (“because for me anyone hiding behind a computer is kind of irrelevant”) – it’s your potential fan base you are insulting!!!

Even people who are neutral towards her will get the feeling that they are unimportant to her so why bother to buy a movie ticket?

  48. Anj says:

I dont blame her for accusing the internet people for goading her with line “you are in industry coz ur family”

Sure she got foot in industry due to her family, but she built a career for herself.

And cmon you have to agree, most people on internet do is to insult everyone.

  49. Boo says:

Mamie Gummer? Meryl must’ve been on post-partum sense-altering drugs when she picked that melodious moniker. Marshmallow Gumbo.

    Real name: Mary. !

  50. Kevin says:

Jo, I agree totally with you. I have always thought Eric rocked. He brings the same kind of edginess I like. Kind of similar to Jimmy Woods or Tommy Lee Jones. The girl is clueless but I gotta admit, she’s pretty damn cute. She’s sporting some water ski feet though.

  51. LittleDeadGirl says:

Yeah, being pretty, rich, white and with famous very influential family members has had NOTHING to do with her success in Hollwood. I’d have more respect for her if she said “you know what, yeah I got a huge boost, but I plan on working hard and proving I am a good actress”. See that’s all you have to say … not “nepotism doesn’t happen … errr yes it does sweetheart but sweet you think otherwise”.

  52. I Choose Me says:

@L. Yes! That’s the part of her interview that bothered me as well. Granted, she might now have meant it how it came across, in which case she could benefit from learning to articulate properly. So many celebs today can’t seem to string a sentence together to save their lives.

  53. Shemp says:

Next, Emma R will pull an “Olivia Munn” and say her LOOKS don’t have anything to do with her “career”!

G*d bless her but does the world really need another spoiled/entitled star-twit?!?

  54. Damon Dorn says:

    (Please re-post)

Here is an organization who engages in cultural and personal terrorism.

Type “gawker outs cia officers” into google and you will see that this drug-user tabloid takes pride in playing a game of exposing undercover intelligence and law enforcement officers, an act which can cost those officers their lives. Not the sort of game America should tolerate. These people are un-American.

The staff of Gawker have publicly admitted that they were hired to attend the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas and sabotage the corporate exhibit booths in violation of the law.

This tabloid, Gawker Media, makes it’s name out of being the first to show corporate prototypes. The staff of the tabloid try to get ahold of workers at technology companies and seek to influence them to lose “iphone” and other prototypes in public places where they can pick them up. Law enforcement believes that Jason Chen, Adrian Covert and Joe Brown, of Gawker, work together on this effort. The San Mateo Police Dept. has kicked in their staff’s doors. Gabby Darbyshire of Gawker threatened the police officers with legal and political intimidation to stall the San Mateo police department investigation. They didn’t like that!!!

They hack into phone systems and servers for their “scoops”. Gawker staff worked for London newspapers who hacked and they are now under cooperative federal investigation with London law enforcement.

A hacker group has made a great showing of its recent break-ins to law enforcement computers. This group has deep roots and members around Gawker Media. Law enforcement suspects that at least one of the three names mentioned previously are members of this group.

She’s not average looking at all, she’s beautiful! I think you people just want to dislike her.

Fine with your permission let me to grab your RSS feed to stay updated with forthcoming post. Thanks 1,000,000 and please keep up the rewarding work.

  57. Thor says:

I’m honestly disgusted by your comments on her, she’s a talented, beautiful young woman and to make stark negative judgements on her is rude and affirms an insecurity in you. Jealousy is low. You all need to grow up and realise voicing you’re insecurities is pretty juvenile.
