Zoe Saldana in floral Balmain at the Spirit Awards: gorgeous or uninspired?

Last night’s Independent Spirit Awards added to the 70 worldwide awards already collected by The Artist, which won Best Feature, Best Director (Michel Hazanavicius), Best Male Lead (Jean Dujardin), and Best Cinematography. Sadly, there was no Jean or Uggie on the red carpet! They were probably en route across the Atlantic Ocean in preparation for tonight’s Oscars, and if you want to read a full list of Independent Spirit winners, you may do so here. Now let’s run down some B-C listers on the red carpet.

Zoe Saldana wore a floral Balmain mini dress that showed off her pin-thin pins. She’s really, really skinny, right? I’d make the clichéd statement that the gold, flowery print really reminds me of something that I’ve seen in my grandma’s living room, but my grandma had much better taste than to upholster in such a manner. I feel like Zoe does the structured shoulder look far too often, and the nude-colored pumps look really obtrusive (gold strappy sandals would’ve been better). Zoe is a very beautiful woman, but she didn’t bring it on the red carpet here. The open back on the dress is slightly interesting though.

Elizabeth Olsen donned an Antonio Berardi white sheath dress, and I wanted to say something about Lizzie not being able to dress for her body type, but she’s lovely in this dress nonetheless. I’m not entirely crazy about the sleeves, and it’s a bit too crystal-encrusted for my personal tastes, but she made a strong debut at these awards with her nomination for Best Female Lead.

Anna Kendrick wore an Alexander McQueen dress that I really tried to resist but actually loved. I think the bold shot of reds overrode the paisley combined with black leather waist — a combo that doesn’t theoretically make sense, but Anna pulls it off. Her hair and makeup are quite pretty and set off a youthful glow.

Kate Beckinsale went very casual with a fuschia jumpsuit by Diane von Furstenberg. She accessorized with Christian Louboutin peep-toe heels and a Gucci bag. Her glossy lips and loose hair looked particularly unkempt, and this entire ensemble gives me a headache.

Laura Dern, in a move clearly inspired by late 1980s Bop magazine ensembles, wore a floral maxi dress and denim jacket. Holy Debbie Gibson monstrosity! I’m not quite sure what’s going on here, and I don’t know that we should even try to analyze it beyond stating that Laura really looks like crap here.

Lucy Liu provided a much needed kick of playfulness on the red carpet. She wore a Roberto Cavalli dress (which I like even with the leopard print detail) and Giuseppi Zanotti wedge shoes. Her makeup was appropriate, and her pulled-back ponytail was just right. Did you know that she’s 43 years old? Lucy looks spectacular.

    Lucy… She is perfect!

  2. Lis says:

I think Saldana looks great. She seems like an annoying person, but she’s so pretty.

Lucy Liu and Anna Kendricks also look fantastic.

Elizabeth Olsen, Kate Beckinsale and Laura Dern? Not so much.

I think Dern had a nice enough maxi dress picked out, but had a panic attack at the last minute about showing her arms. (Her dress looks sleeveless.)

  3. Lindsey G. says:

43? Is she bathing in virgin blood or something?

  4. Kaboom says:

Laura Dern should found a fashion label called “Sh-t I found in the back of my wardrobe”.

  5. Kimlee says:

Lucy Liu look fantastic now that’s a woman that looks good or her age.

    Zoe looks good also.

Laura Dern looks like shit, how old is she? Because she looks 55.

  6. Claudia says:

Lucy is 43?? Whoa. Good genes!

And I actually LOVE Zoe’s dress. So pretty and feminine, but the middle part on the chest looks like a quit. Still..

  7. yael says:

    i NEED lucy’s dress.

    and anna’s too.

    guh.

  8. Marianne says:

I like Zoe’s dress the best here. I also like Anna’s. I like the premise of Elizabeth’s dress…but I dont think it looks right on her. Lucy looks good.

Hate the jumpsuit. And hate Laura Dern’s look. Probably would be better without the denim jacket.

  9. toto says:

i still don,t know how Zoe Saldana considered pretty!!!

    • demian bichir says:

It’s called the skinny connexion! In H’WOOD standards if you are skinny you are considered “pretty”.

      • Kimlee says:

What dose that have to do with anything thier are people out their who think she pretty BedHead is one of them, It has nothing to do with her size beauty is subjective.

      • Emma - the JP lover says:

Even if Zoe Saldana was Kelly Clarkson sized-10 (which is perfectedly fine and normal, but still gets Kelly labeled as ‘fat’), she would still be pretty. And let’s face it, if Zoe were blond and blue-eyed (after co-starring in both “Star Trek” and “Avatar” in the same year) she’d be considered a beautiful Goddess among women.

  10. Jill says:

Liu looks fabulous. Saldana’s dress is way too short. Nice legs, though.

Non-white women of all races usually age more slowly than caucasian women. There is an old saying among African-Americans that “good black don’t crack”.

Dern looks like she fell out of the ugly tree and hit every single branch on the way down.

  11. LAK says:

Balmain clothes are always badly finished. look at that dress, threads hanging off…..

  12. Ellen says:

Lucy’s left eye looks like a Botox victim, though. Maybe it was just the lights? But I’m voting Botox.

Which just seems crazy. She is so gorgeous. Why mess with that?

    • Frenchie says:

No, no she has always been like this, since what I remember in Ally Mac Beal

    • Jaxx says:

Frenchie is right, her eye’s have always been off. Actually, everyone has one eye smaller than the other. Our bodies are rarely symmetrical. One hand smaller, one foot smaller. The eyes can be really obvious in some people. Usually those in front of the camera have it fixed if it really stands out like Lucy’s does. It’s a simple procedure. My cousin had it done when she was competing in beauty pageants.

  13. Alaina says:

??? Zoe Saldana too skinny?? Where? What are you talking about? She looks absolutely lovely – yes, even the dress. How you can call her too skinny is just beyond me.

I see this all the time on here, more often than not Americans calling perfectly normal-sized people too bony, skinny, underweight, when they’re just slim, and as with Zoe, beautifully proportioned with great legs.

This is not skinny. This is NORMAL! Really, no wonder there’s a huge obesity problem around when people have such a skewed perception of what constitutes normal weight.

    • demian bichir says:

I’m sorry the girl is SKINNY.I love the dress.

    • blouson says:

Shge is not too skinny, I agree. Zoe just looks like a tall slim woman who is not bony at all. That being said I have the super skinny body type so I don’t scream eating disorder at anyone small.

    • carrie says:

see her in real ! she’s skinny! she’s a Q-tip(she may be a professional model)

    • Jaxx says:

Totally agree with Alaina. She looks naturally slender to me. Look at her back. No bony knobs, no ribs showing. This is normal for this girl. She has a lovely figure and really beautiful legs.

So I don’t get the skinny here at all. I bet she was gangly as a young girl but she definitely has a womanly figure now. Skinny girls don’t have a full round backside like she does.

  14. Claudia says:

^Have to agree to a certain extent. This is Zoe’s body type, always has been, and there really is nothing wrong with that. She’s not any thinner than she normally is.

  15. demian bichir says:

Where are Paz Vega ‘s pics?

  16. Aiobhan says:

Elizabeth’s mega watt smile makes that outfit acceptable in my book. If she took the doily off the top of the dress I do not believe that it would look too bad.

Lucy Liu is a breathe of fresh air. The dress is not to bad but her face is amazing. I remember when she was on Ally McBeal and always knocking it out of the park when she was on the red carpet.

I like Zoe’s dress. The shoes are fug but I love the dress. I am biased though because I love Balmain.

I also love Anna’s dress. To be Sarah B. can do no wrong. I am a bit meh on Anna though because she is connected to that trash series. When the final movie comes out I will give her a chance. She seems to be carving out a real career for herself outside of Twilight.

  17. mel says:

Zoe and Anna both look stunning. I love love love zoe’s dress….she has the body to wear and I say totally go for it. GORGEOUS!!!!! Laura Dern…WTF?

  18. Agnes says:

in a pretty tough competition, laura dern takes it by a mile. good lord.

  19. UniqJazz says:

I agree..Zoe looks great. I would wear her dress.
Lucy and Anna have the best outfits on !
I like Kate’s jump suit. I would wear it.

  20. cr says:

Zoes’s dress looks like it was made from a combination of grandma’s quilt and curtains.

  21. aprayerforthewildatheart says:

I don’t really get the hype surrounding Zoe, she’s like the new Jessica Alba. Her dress has MPD, the sleeves are a weird length with a (?) cut up the sides, open back paired with shoulders that look like the hanger is still inside, and too short, which is forgivable because that fabric’s so hideous, it’s just good there’s less of it.

Olsen, when’s the Little House On the Prairie, wedding? Kate is always beautiful, but no one over the age of two should ever wear a jumpsuit. Lucy Liu, she’s drop dead gorgeous, LOVE the shoes. Dern, I “lost” a jean jacket back in eighth grade, I KNEW she jacked my shit, and I swear Michell Duggar has that exact same dress.

  22. Jen34 says:

Except for Lucy Lui, they all look dreadful. I don’t get the appeal of Zoe, either. She’s nothing special.

    • skuddles says:

I agree Jen34 – never could understand Zoe’s appeal either, she’s not particularly pretty. Very slim figure but that’s about all she has going for her IMO.

  23. Lukie says:

@bedhead: no you did not say she looks like she plucked her ensemble from Bop magazine!

I totally agree by the way! Cowboy boots and a hat and she can totally be debbie gibson or Tiffany!

  24. Mel says:

They all look good. I think Zoe should get back to the same size she was in drum line other than that everyone looks good in this bunch. No Mel rudeness needed.

  25. Mae East says:

The Spirit Awards are actually held during the day. (Thus no Jean Dujardin–he was at the Cesars the night before.) Not that I love Laura Dern’s look, but knowing that this is happening in the middle of the afternoon in a parking lot near the beach puts her jean jacket in context.

  26. Dena says:

I can’t shake it but everytime I see Zoe, I instantly see the Grinch Who Stole Christmas. They could be fraternal twins.

  27. skuddles says:

All I can say about Laura Dern’s outfit is… oh dear. I’m kind of feeling Kate’s pantsuit though.

  28. B says:

Saldana and Kendricks look terrific. Everyone else, not so much. I want to like Liu’s outfit, but the different patterns in the skirt clash together badly.

  29. Sunlily says:

The dress is too short for my tastes, but I still think she manages to pull it off. And her legs are looking gorgeous. And what does her being pretty have to do with her being an actress?

Oh Kate. That hair. That jumpsuit. Why??

    Lucy is looking fabulous!

  30. marie says:

I am on the fence about Zoe’s dress only because the material of the dress and the heavy quilting would make 99% of woman look fat in it…and Zoe still looks thin in it. She is too thin.

  31. mememe says:

Elizabeth dresses so old for her age.

  32. Paige says:

poor Zoe is wearing the world’s ugliest dress!
