Alex O’Loughlin enters rehab for recent issues with prescription painkillers

I pretty much only know Alex O’Loughlin from the film The Backup Plan, where he played the love interest of preggo Jennifer Lopez. By the way, even though that’s not even close to being a good film, I came out of it liking Alex a great deal. He has an enormous amount of on-screen charm, and the man is totally gorgeous. Anyway, he’s currently on Hawaii Five-0, which is probably pretty stunt-heavy work. Alex had a shoulder injury recently, and as such, he began taking prescription medication, likely some heavy-duty painkillers. And much like Gerard Butler’s official excuse, Alex’s representation is now announcing that Alex is seeking treatment for issues involving his abuse of prescription pain medication.

Alex O’Loughlin, who plays Steve McGarrett on CBS’s reboot of Hawaii Five-0, is expected to miss filming for at least one episode while he undergoes treatment.

The Australian-born actor, 35, is to “receive supervised treatment for prescription pain medication due to a recent shoulder injury,” his rep says.

The popular police show has already shot 19 episodes for the season with production said to be ahead of schedule.

“We respect and support Alex’s decision,” CBS TV Studios says in a statement.

“Everyone at CBS Television Studios and Hawaii Five-0 wishes him well and we look forward to his return.”

[From People]

Now, Alex is no Gerard Butler. For one thing, he’s not as famous as Gerard, which may be why we’ve never heard a whiff of scandal about Alex. Or it could be that this story should be accepted as face value, that Alex never had a problem with anything until a few months ago, when he got hooked on Vicodin or whatever. I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt, just because there doesn’t seem to be any other scandal around him, and because he seems to be taking his treatment seriously, and he’s coming clean with the world. Good luck to Alex, and I hope he gets clean and stays clean.

I sort of get a cuter-Matt-LeBlanc vibe from him.

Those PP will bring anyone down. Not my kind of high.

  2. sm255 says:

I know I’m being a troll at this point but I have to ask: Alex WHO?

  3. Marjalane says:

And, unlike Gerard Butler, this guy appears to bathe on a regular basis…

    • smith says:

Yea, who knew the combined smell of Haggis and Lucky Strikes would make my knees weak.

  4. Blue says:

He’s cute and Australian! Oh my!
Anyways I’m glad he went before things got too out of control, hope he gets the help he needs.

  5. brasileira says:

Well, I’m not sure about the scandal free part. There’s a rumor making the rounds that he left a pregnant girlfriend behind right before he was thought to make a big break in HW, which never really happened anyway. I don’t remember where I’ve seen that, but I have. And yeah… HOT!

  6. Jackie says:

I adore this guy and wish him the best, really sweet looking too!

  7. The Original Mia says:

Knew something was going on with him, but I thought it was a healthier lifestyle with the new girlfriend. Sorry to hear he’s become addicted to painkillers. Hope he gets better soon.

  8. lisa says:

    Love him in Hawaii Five-0!
    Wish him all the best!!

  9. Nessa says:

He is the only reason ‘The Back-up Plan’ was watchable. He is adorable in that movie. He is ridiculously hot, too.

    • CookieJar says:

Yes yes on both! I wish it was anyone else but Jlo in that movie. Alex was so charming in it, with a better (and cuter) actress it could have been a great movie. Oh and in the vampire series he was …sigh (again he had a very annoying female partner in that)
      He is hot!!!!

  10. BK says:

Prescription pain killers sound risky as heck. So many people seem to get hooked.

Guy seems like a hard working, pretty cool type. Liked him in his Vampire tv show and in 5-0. He can be entertaining and fun to watch.

Hope he kicks the addiction and gets clean soon so he can get back to work and move forward with his life.

  11. Ell says:

This news made me sad, I like Alex a lot, love him in Hawaii Five-O and he was charming in The Backup Plan.

  12. LucyOriginal says:

I hope he recovers soon! I liked him since I saw in that tv show he played a vampire.

    @Nessa: I agree with Nessa.

    • Holly says:

Yes, Moonlight was an amazing show that should have gotten past the first season. He’s the only vampire character in recent years to really sell the hot, imo.

  13. GoodCapon says:

I wish him all the best. I hope he gets clean ASAP.

    And yes, he’s f**kin hot.

  14. original sandy says:

he is hot, i loved him in the back-up plan, he made it watchable, hope he gets better soon. he is so cute in those pictures above hummm…

I just dont get how lots of people get addicted to pain pills. I’ve been prescribed vicodin and codiene before for migraines and i usually use one day worth and that’s it. Still have almost full if both bottles. I prefer wine buzz to how pain pills make you feel. Jusy dont get why people like that pain pill feeling…yuck

    • Camille (The original) says:

Yes I have to wonder (cynical me!), if ‘addiction to prescription meds’ is used as the new cover (as opposed to saying ‘exhaustion’ or what have you) for cocaine or other addiction problems, as it appears less dodgy to be addicted to ‘legal’ meds.
I could be wrong of course, but when it comes to Hollywood who really knows the truth. Image is everything there. *shrugs*

I wish him well with his recovery.

      • Jen says:

Trust me I wish it was an excuse getting off these pain killers is the hardest thing I have ever done I can not go to rehab so I’m cold turkey three days I too started with an injury on vicoden and found myself illegally buying 30mg percoset they say is not much different between pain pills and heroin and pain pill use leads to heroin use I have been clean three days but I’m over the worst this type of addiction is real and I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy good luck alex I wish you well

    • Pia says:

That’s the thing… taking a pill here and there for a migraine is not going to get you hooked. It seems to be that it’s the folks who are recovering from surgery or dealing with chronic injuries that get hooked. They are instructed to take it regularly and then take more and more as the tolerance for the drug increases. Once you are healed and might not actually need the drug for pain management, the physical and mental addiction is already established. I was prescribed Vicodin for my wisdom teeth, but it didn’t actually DO anything so instead of taking more I took none. I’m afraid to admit it, but I snorted a 5mg Oxy (it was given to me) just to see what would happen, and I didn’t get anything from it. I just don’t get the appeal as a street drug, it is BAD for you and I can imagine it is awfully expensive… if you’re didn’t at least start the addiction from a prescription then you get no sympathy from me. I’ll stick with pot thank you 🙂

      • Isa says:

It surprises me they put out a press release at all. It seems like he could’ve flown under the radar.

  16. Embee says:

I wonder what he was taking. The addictive qualities of some painkillers are incredible. Especially Oxycontin. And some doctors prescribe that shit for anything. My dad and sister are pharmacists and they honestly wish they didn’t have to stock the stuff so they could avoid the addicts. In 35 years of business my dad was never held up and in the past 5 years it has been three times – all for Oxy. And no, the town/neighborhood didn’t get more violent. It’s that damned drug.

    • lucy2 says:

I hear you, Embee. I recently had a doctor prescribe me one of the highly addictive ones for a very minor procedure that I didn’t even need to take an Advil for, the discomfort was that low. Scary how easily that gets handed out, and then one happens once people are hooked.

  17. Lauren says:

GB is disgusting. This dude..I want to nurse him back to health.

  18. DiaBLa says:

Alex is completely HOT!!! Hope he gets better soon whatever the problem is. he seems like he is hard working and he is awesome in 5 0.
Yes I saw him in Moonlight and was completely hooked on him.

  19. lucy2 says:

Love him – he’s really hot, and he seems like a genuinely nice, hard working guy very grateful for his success with the show.
I don’t think he’s the hard partying type, I think he really did get injured, was probably over worked and over prescribed, and it became a problem. I give him credit for facing up to it and getting help, and hope he has a quick and thorough recovery.

  20. KLO says:

This guy is just insanely good looking….. :O

  21. JulieM says:

I’m a big Alex fan. The only reason I watch Hawaii 5-0. The show’s plots are very predictable most of the time. Check out Moonlight for the sexiest vampire ever.

He has been looking very gaunt during the second season now showing. He’s also a total fitness nut. If he’s not bs-ing about his fitness practices, then I think this story is true.

Low key, nice guy. Very protective father. Get well.

  22. Dana says:

No worries. It’s Scott Caan who carries that show anyway. When is Papa James going to make his cameo?

  23. lulabella says:

I understand this addiction very well. I have been there. Good for you Alex to get help before you lose everything. That is a place I will never return to. I will send many prayers to our makers in heaven for you dear. You are a VERY BRAVE and HONEST dude for doing this. Maybe more people in this world will learn from your wonderful example and follow in your footsteps. Love you, Take care and be well and safe. Your son will be very proud of his dad in this situation no doubt. xo :)))))

  24. Bex says:

Alex is a fantastic guy, he is so down to earth and humble, not to mention damn hot. He did hurt his shoulder during filming for five o and its just a damn shame that he got hooked on pain meds, glad he is doing the right and best thing for himself and family. He has a huge fan base from all over the globe, although most people have not heard of him in the uk. Get well Alex, we love you xxx

  25. Concerned says:

Funny how press releases go, Alex will miss at least one episode of H50, looks like more than that but no one is letting fans know anything.
