Brad Pitt gets manhandled by security at Benjamin Button screening (update)

Brad Pitt went to the premiere a screening of his film The Curious Case of Benjamin Button in LA last night but avoided the red carpet and tried to sneak in about a half an hour before the film was supposed to end start. Photographers went crazy following him and in the melee that ensued a security guard grabbed Pitt around the waist in a misguided attempt to keep him safe or something. Pitt looked kind of rattled by the incident and then escaped up a back staircase like Jason Bourne. The staircase led to nowhere though, and he just hung out up there anticlimactically until the lobby was cleared out for him and it was ok to go back downstairs. (Update: details corrected were from US Weekly’s version, which contradict details in People’s version, shown in the update below.)

Brad Pitt was grabbed, pushed and spun around by a plainclothes security guard at the premiere of his new movie The Curious Case of Benjamin Button in L.A. on Monday.

Pitt arrived at the Bruin Theatre in Westwood about a half hour before the film was scheduled to end, as he was supposed to talk to the audience and answer their questions about the film.

Some photographers knew he’d be there, and as he entered the lobby, they followed him in and attempted to take photos.

Seeing the commotion, the plainclothes security guard went after Pitt in lieu of shooing away the photographers. Oddly, the guard appeared to be clutching a brochure for a karate studio in his teeth as he manhandled the actor.

Pitt looked bewildered and shaken, but he was able to pull free and go up a stairway to escape.

The stairway only led up to bathrooms.

Pitt had to wait a bit while the lobby was cleared before he was able to walk back down without any problems.

Do you remember when that crazy fan grabbed Pitt at the Venice Film Festival last year? He said in an interview in September of last year that he’s seen the other side of fame and that it can be scary both for himself and for his children, who he tries to protect:

“I understand the essence of paranoia. I understand being hunted, to some degree. It’s rare, but there are imbalanced people out there. I’ve had break-ins in the house,” Pitt said. “I’ve had some of these abnormal incidents that can be a bit frightening.

“It’s something that I want to be aware of and be cautious about, especially with the family, that everybody’s protected,” he told the AP.

I bet Pitt didn’t think that a security guard would be the next person to grab him inappropriately and maybe he’ll make sure that he has his own security detail with him next time to protect him from overzealous rent a cops.

Update: People Magazine has more details including a brief statement from Pitt. It was a screening of the film, not a premiere as US Weekly stated, and People says that Pitt got there a half hour before the screening was set to begin, not before it ended. Pitt kind of blows off the incident and blames it on the paparazzi. An eyewitness says it was an accident and that Pitt’s arm was grabbed hard by the security guard:

“Though they were exceptionally more aggressive than usual,” Pitt describes the paparazzi to PEOPLE, “breaking through a security barrier and into a private holding area, ultimately [it was] just another day in the life…”

The unflappable star had arrived half an hour early for the screening at the Bruin Theater in Westwood, where paparazzi rushed into the building.

“Brad didn’t seem to mind having his picture taken and he instead seemed excited for the preview and was smiling,” says one of the photographers there. “While the theater security tried to push all the photographers out of the theater, one of the security guards accidentally grabbed Brad by the arm really hard.”

Pitt reportedly remained calm throughout the incident.

Security dude got a bit over zealous didn’t he?

  2. Anne says:

I was going to say something snarky about how pale he looks but after reading the article, I feel for them. I couldn’t imagine what it must feel like to worry about the safety of my family every day.

Even though I feel if they just posted their baby pictures on line, for free, there wouldn’t be such a high price on photos and the paps wouldn’t be so hell bent on getting the money shot. I know the paps aren’t the problem here, he’s talking about loonies but really, I would do everything in my power to protect my family and selling baby pictures doesn’t help the situation. And, yes I’m completely aware the $$ goes to charity.

Oh please.Brad arrived late, the doors were closed, its pretty obvious. The security guard didnt regognise him,he has his hat down and with that mustache and that clothes.Blaming it on the paps again. If you want privacy dont be the one who actually publish your own private moments.Loser.

  4. Kaiser says:

Jesus. Sounds like chaos. Poor Brad.

I totally hate the ‘stache, btw. He looks like a cheap porno actor.

  5. Mary says:

Brad was cool, arrived EARLY and blew it off. Now people can probably see why you don’t see their children in public much. Others probably have been swearing or hit someone, but he kept calm. Thanks for getting the update by the way.

  6. Mia says:

The Lipster have suck the bejesus out of him!

Wow… He looks like crap lately.

  7. Murmur says:

Wow when did he turn into an old man? He has definitely hit the wall.

  8. Buttercup says:

@Mia and Murmur: He’s not exactely 25 anymore. How many guys in their 40’s that you know look even half as decent?

@Kaiser: I hate the stache too, but I think its for his latest film role.

That’s probably the funniest thing I’ve read all day.

  10. RAN says:

I’m sure he probably just felt like he was at home.

I’ve seen MANY men who look MUCH better than that in their 40’s. I work with a lot of them… In fact, most men look better as they age – not so in BP’s case. This guy needs a vacation.

  11. Diva says:

I like Brad Pitt, but oh, how I do hate that mustache! 😕

  12. RAN says:

OMG!!!! 😆 😀 What kind of diet IS that below? The one where the woman lost 12 lbs in 2 weeks…? How did she go from a black woman to a white woman just by losing weight?

  13. Jeanne says:

He looks so pasty-faced. The hats are starting to get old too. Judging by his pants he looks a little excited.

  14. Kim says:

I saw Brad Pitt in NY last year. I guess he has aged because he looked nothing like he does in movies. The security guard may have had the same problem looking at these pictures.

  15. Buttercup says:

🙄 Wow, you must know a lot of major hotties. The 40+ years olds that I’ve ever met/know, don’t still look like they did at 25. You know, they have wrinkles etc. Then again they don’t have 6 kids to wear them out either 😆 .

The hats are to cover bad hair for his latest film role, like he normally does. He’s probably laid off on all the fake tan, botox etc as well, hence the icky pasty look.

With all that said I’m still not a major fan of his, but I wouldn’t mind seeing TCCOBB, it looks interesting.

  16. Ter says:

Everytime I see this guy he looks haggard. The guy must not have time to even catch his breath. He looks very, very old. I’ve seen pictures of his mother and he looks older than her.
