John Cusack promotes ‘The Raven’ in Russia: could Lloyd Dobler still get it?

God, what is about John Cusack? Seeing photos of him still makes me sigh like a schoolgirl with an impossible crush. Is it the Lloyd Dobler thing? I think that’s part of it – John Cusack played the sweet, vulnerable boyfriend so beautifully in Say Anything, and there’s an entire generation of women who will always get moist for Cusack on that role alone. But it’s more than that for me. He’s just… a different kind of actor. If Cusack was coming up in today’s Hollywood as a young actor, I doubt he would even be able to find his footing. They just don’t make parts for sensitive, intelligent, dry, interesting men these days. And don’t start yelling about Sparkles, either. John Cusack had that sparkly quality, but he was able to maintain a “man’s man” appeal too – dudes LIKE John Cusack and women love him.

Anyway, these are new photos of Cusack in Moscow, where he’s doing some early promotion for The Raven. He plays Edgar Allen Poe in a fictional story about Poe acting like a crime-fighter, trying to take down a deranged serial killer. For real. I don’t even know what’s up with Cusack’s career these days. I guess Hot Tub Time Machine bought him some Hollywood love (that was a huge hit, right?), but seriously – Poe? Here’s the trailer:

It doesn’t come out here in America until the end of April. God knows, this could be a huge hit. ???

Just look at Lloyd Dobler.

Turn your sarcasm filter on and read that sentence again. I think you’ll get it.

  2. fabgrrl says:

Love him. Always have, always will. But why does his mouth look so…tight? It’s like he is trying to hide his braces.

  3. Jayna says:

One of my favorite underrated lead actors. Where has he been lately?

  4. NYC_girl says:

I’ll always love him. I’ll even sit through “Serendipity” when it’s on TV just to see him.

  5. suzanna says:

I loved him in The Sure Thing–one of my favorite movies of all time…

  6. gee says:

    Love him. Unabashedly. Just love.

  7. Lisa says:

He could get it until I started following him on Twitter…now, not so much…

For a LOT of celebs…Twitter = Da Debil!

    • Amy says:

Hah! Now I feel compelled to look him up on Twitter and ruin my lifelong crush, too.

      Thanks a lot, Lisa!

    • Mari says:

His cra cra started showing on Twitter. I’d still hit it. As long as he doesn’t speak.

  8. dorothy says:

I love him. He’s such a great actor. Nice to see him again.

  9. Amy says:

    He’s still adorable.

  10. Mia says:

Love. My heart has been his since Serendipity. I think I watched that movie on repeat in college.

  11. Kaboom says:

Hot Tub Time Machine made about $50m in box office on a $36m budget, so including DVD sales and rentals it did quite but not spectacularly well.

  12. Girl says:

I know nothing of this movie and just based on the fact that it is based on Poe’s work gives me pause because of the entertainments industry’s propensity to screw with classical works. But the fact that John Cusack is in it gives me hope. I’ll try to pretend that the movie 2012 didn’t happen.

  13. Maya says:

That thumbs-up picture is pretty cute.

  14. Aiobhan says:

I have never seen Say Anything but have seen many of his other films. I would hit that then marry him to make sure no one else could have him. Lol. The Raven does not sound as ridiculous as Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter does. I did like the book of the same title though. I will see both films.

  15. Ck says:

High Fidelity >_< I feel like so many of the guys I date bear a striking similarity hahah it's so good!! (btw, I still SO would… He's still single/no kids, right??) 😉 😛

  16. Juliette says:

One of my favorite John Cusack movies has got to be Grosse Point Blank. Funny, sexy – so good.

Although, Say Anything is still an awesome classic that I could watch a hundred times. He’s totally one of my favorites under rated actors.

I would take him home with me for sure.

  17. Esmom says:

I swooned over him in Say Anything. His looks now, however, remind me a bit of Charlie Sheen. 🙁

  18. mia girl says:

I gave her my heart and she gave me a pen

  19. JM says:

I’m still in love with Lane Meyer and “I want my two dollars!” ^_^

  20. Bethany says:

My sister-in-law fight over him and my boyfriend and brother just roll their eyes.

“I gave her my heart, she gave me a pen.” Still gets me…..

Although, I’m afraid in real life he is a d$ck.

    • Esmom says:

That’s what I’ve always heard, too. I used to live in the same neighborhood as his sister Joan and she was such a fixture in the community, helping fund raise for more green spaces and just being a regular mom. I guess John’s not following the same path. I kinda thought he might be married with kids by now but I guess not. He’s more of a “fun bachelor uncle” type maybe?

  21. Jess says:

I will always love Lloyd Dobler. And maybe it’s just me, but I also loved Hot Tub Time Machine!

  22. Nanz says:

EA Por is my favorite author and Cusack is one of the best(and underrated) actors out there. I am soexcited about this film, and i hope it soes extrememly well at the box office. I wish it was more biopic bc I think Cusack could pull it off. But I’ll settle for fiction just to see a movie about Poe.

  23. sam says:

Hell yes!!! We played in your eyes at our wedding because of say anything. Love him

  24. Anoni Mus says:

His latest choices of films haven’t been all that… 2012, Hot Tub Time Machine…and that Raven flick sounds like a rip-off of the new Sherlock Holmes type of movie, where old characters are given a modern, action flick twist.

That said, yesterday I saw Sixteen Candles, and he was so dorkily cute back in the day. His 80s movies keep me from hating him.

  25. jamie says:

I never see him with women? perhaps hes gay? just wondering 🙂 I think he’s adorable though!

  26. bgirl says:

He’s looking a little weathered but I would still hit that in a minute.

  27. Launicaangelina says:

Grosse Point Blank and High Fidelity. That is all.

  28. Jennifer12 says:

Yes, he’s still Lloyd the way Matthew Broderick is still Ferris Bueller. But, OH, the sexiness of John Cusack. Ages well, doesn’t do stupid surgery, values intelligence, amazing sense of humor….. he still has it. He ages well.

  29. ALEXIS says:

I completely agree with you. I am 29 and have had a crush on John for my whole life. Hes like that neighbour that you’ve had a teen crush on! Ugh I want to put something serious on that sexy as 49 yr old man! He just does something to me!
