Chris O’Dowd: “You don’t have to f–k all the time to have a great relationship”

When I first saw Bridesmaids, I wasn’t super-crazy in love with the film. I thought there were some funny parts, but it was a surprisingly bittersweet “comedy”. I did, however, come out of the film completely in love with Irish actor Chris O’Dowd. O’Dowd played Kristen Wiig’s love interest in the film, and Bridesmaids was many Americans’ first introduction to O’Dowd, who is a popular comedian and actor in Ireland and the UK. Anyway, I’ve never devoted a post to Chris before, and he’s got a new interview with Vulture which is cracking me up, so I thought, “Why not?” He’s promoting his new film, Friends With Kids, in which he plays Maya Rudolph’s love interest/husband. You can read the full Vulture interview here, and here are some highlights:

Vulture: You play a guy in a nearly sexless marriage [in Friends With Kids]. But at least you’re a sweet couple?
O’Dowd: Thanks! I love it because I buy it, and it feels very familiar to people I know. Also, it’s okay: You don’t have to f–k all the time to have a great relationship. [Laughs.]

I love that you’re promoting this movie right around the time you got engaged.
Oh, yeah. I’m really looking forward to having less and less sex. That’s really what I’m looking forward to. I don’t like to be too happy.

Because you’re a comedian.
Because I’m a Catholic.

I’m glad the word cougar didn’t make it into the script in the scene where you and Maya talk about her being the older woman. I hate the word cougar.
I have a friend who is embroiled in this cougar thing at the moment. It’s bizarre. She’s going out with a guy in a boy band. But cougar wouldn’t be in my wheelhouse of words.

How do you feel being called an up-and-comer even though you did The IT Crowd and you’ve actually been working for a long time?
I don’t mind it. I guess it’s better than being a down-and-goner. F–k it.

Has Hollywood surprised you at all?
It’s been a piece of piss. It’s been surprisingly inclusive.

You’re 32, which puts you right in the sweet spot for what the movie is about. Are your friends starting to have kids?
All of ‘em. All of ‘em are f–king doing it behind my back, almost selfishly; not taking our friendship into consideration and just going off and ruining their lives by having children. In the last year, three of my friends have done it. I just don’t know them anymore. No — it’s good; obviously, it’s great. But I don’t see them as much, and whenever I do I have to hang out with this little, flabby-skinned s–t who’s terrible at drinking games.

Wait, kids have flabby skin? Or are you talking about the mothers?
The kids! F–k them.

So I guess you don’t show up at many 1-year-old birthday parties?
Not at all. That’s not a party. Just because it’s a birthday doesn’t mean you can call it a party. It’s not a party if there are 11-month-olds at it.

[From Vulture]

Wait, he’s only 32??! Um, I thought he was older, I really did. What is it about Irishmen these days – they’re damned attractive, but they always look older than their ages? First Michael Fassbender (who is only two years older than Chris), and now this. Have I just been warped by Hollywood pretty boys and how they always look much younger than their years?

As for Chris’s talk about babies and marriage and relationships – he’s joking. For the most part. You know as soon as he marries his fiancée Dawn Porter, she’ll be knocked up.

Oh, what’s that? Chris O’Dowd and Michael Fassbender hung out together at the Irish Film Awards? BAM! Fassy’s not short, Chris is just really, really TALL.

      • lola lola says:

YES!! The IT Crowd is hilarious. If you only know Chris from Bridesmaids then you HAVE to watch the IT Crowd. Its on NetFlixs Watch it Now. Totally worth it. He’s sooooo good!

    • Camille (The original) says:

Agree! I’ve adored him since IT Crowd, love that show. The man is hilarious and adorable (not that good looking but he’s cute in a cuddly bear kind of way).

  2. Anguishedcorn says:

I actually did laugh out loud at that interview excerpt: love his humor.

  3. TQB says:

How awesome is he. Seriously. I just want to snuggle him through the computer screen. Also, his fiance is lovely, what a nice smile. I want to have them both over for Game Night, but I would just be another of his pals with a baby. Rats.

  4. littlestar says:

    His fiancee is gorgeous!

    • Camille (The original) says:

She is pretty, my hubby thought she was Lily Allen the first time he saw a pic of her lol.

DP does doco type programs, or at least she did. Stuff about sex/dating etc.

  5. Rose says:

Kaiser you need to see the BBC adaptation of The Crimson Petal and the White, he’s amazing in it, he’s serious in it, he’s got an english accent in it and…he’s nekkid in it 😉

    • Charissa says:

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I had no idea there was something with him naked in it and I will be finding it to watch soon. You’ve made my evening.

  6. Jess says:

I fell in love with him in Bridesmaids too. And I love this interview (although, speaking from experience, he should be careful about wishing for less and less sex, too little is not good for a marriage).

  7. Lara says:

I wonder if the friend he is talking about in the ‘cougar’ relationship is Caroline Flack hmm.

  8. Cathy says:

He is kind of handsome in a wierd sort of way. I can’t put my finger on what I mean by wierd sort of way, but it’s the only word that came to my mind looking at his pictures.

    • Justalark says:

Steven Speilberg’s cute, tall, Irish cousin perhaps? (Especially in that first photo!)

  9. The Truth Fairy says:

    I love The IT Crowd!!

    • irishserra says:

Me too!! I hate that it was such a short run. He’ll always be Roy to me.

“Did you see that Ludicrous display last night…?”

      • minime says:

“did you try to turn it off and on again?” :))) IT Crowd was just one of the best series ever and he’s a great actor! Glad to see more of him.

    • lem says:

everyone should watch the IT crowd… Roy and Moss are the best. I love him!

  10. jamie says:

I love Chris he’s adorable! The IT Crowd is definitely in my top five favorite TV shows of all time. Anyone who hasn’t seen it should check it out.

    • grace says:

mine too! I got addicted, after I discovered it on Netflix. 🙂 I love his character, but Richmond is just my favorite character of all time! I became obsessed with Noel now. Weird…

    • inthekitchen says:

I second the IT Crowd recommendation. The episode where they go to the theater is one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen. I can watch it over and over and laugh every time.

I love Chris O’Dowd on the show and in Bridesmaids…and the interview is pretty great too. I hope he doesn’t turn into a DB.

      • grace says:

the episode at the theater was the funniest thing ever, I laughed so hard, specially with those scenes with Roy waving bye to the staff. lol I’m laughing just remembering that.
The dinner party episode was also very funny, imo.

      • Nakli says:

I recently saw the episode of him and Ewan McGregor promoting Bridesmaids and Beginners on the Graham Norton show. They are wicked!

      • Claire says:

I saw the Graham Norton interview too and he was awesome. Had no idea he was with Dawn Porter – she does all those interesting documentries and is so super pretty. Cool couple. He is one of those guys in a bar whose appeal creeps up on you and you wouldn’t be able to think of anyone else at the table.

  11. michkabibbles says:

the IT crowd is well worth a look at, he’s very funny. i think it’s available through netflix streaming.

  12. mache says:

u guys….you need to watch THE BOAT THAT ROCKED, hes awesome!

    • luce says:

seconded! The Boat That Rocked/Pirate Radio (the american name for it) is a great film.

  13. Chatcat says:

Thanks Kaiser…another guy that is sexy and attractive because he has charm, wit and humor and not just typical “hollywood” faces/bods. And their both Irish to boot (which I am proud to claim that as my heritage). Keep the hot Irish guy stories coming.

  14. Sumodo1 says:

What a hot piece of meat! I adore him. I love Irish guys. Um, am dating one right now and he’s sexxxx-ay and in the NHL!

  15. teehee says:

Everybody just needs to do whatever makes them happy, and everybody else just needs to STFU and accept other people’s happiness.

And then we’d have no more wars or world hunger.

  16. SHump76 says:

I’ve seen him in a few Hollywood films recently, and it always takes me by surprise. I keep thinking he’s our little secret, but it looks like he’s really going to break the big time in the US. Good on him.

  17. Jackie says:

    LOVE.HIM.

  18. Shine says:

“I have a friend who is embroiled in this cougar thing at the moment. It’s bizarre. She’s going out with a guy in a boy band.”

HAHAHA. He’s so talking about Kristin Wiig and her Stokes boy band boyfriend.

  19. Gene Parmesan says:

lol Kaiser i love how u had to make sure we know that Chris is just really really tall compared to Fassy. Fassy is simply so perfect to you! i love your devotion

  20. DavidBowie says:

“The kids! F–k them.” This had me rolling. Rawr…Fassy.

  21. LeManda says:

In the header pic he’s got a Tim Horton’s Coffee cup in one hand and a smoke in the other. Must have been her to visit me in Montreal and I missed him!

  22. irishserra says:

    I adore this man.

  23. alice / jane says:

I can relate to what he jokingly says about friends with little children. I’m surrounded by them! my girls are all having kids, we used to have fun and be silly and now they just speak about poop..

    • lettylynton says:

I totally related to that too! It’s nice to see them with their kids and a bummer all at the same time.

  24. Esmom says:

OMG, love him. He is a prime example of unconventional good looks plus killer sense of humor equaling something that is much greater than the sum of the parts.

I also though he was older, at least mid to late 30s. Maybe its the smoking, drinking lifestyle?

His fiance is pretty, at first glance I thought she was Neve Campbell.

  25. Rin says:

I loved him as Roy on the IT Crowd!

  26. Maria_Spain says:

Kaiser we know that Fassy is not shorter AT ALL .
    I don´t know this guy 🙁

  27. mk martin says:

    <3

  28. danielle says:

Omg – loved him in Bridesmaids, loved him more after reading this interview – funny stuff!

  29. Minky says:

MORE! More of Chris!! That sense of humor was killing me. Love this! 🙂

  30. Nudgie says:

mache (and others) – he was GREAT in that film but in the US and most places it was releassed as “Pirate Radio” with Bill Nighy, Tom Sturridge, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, and Nick Frost.

Excellent film about the 60’s music scene and UK Radio!

  31. normades says:

So many gems in this interview.

  35. original sandy says:

what a humorous guy, very funny interview, will be watching for more.

  36. Melinda says:

Fassie’s so short, there’s no way he’s 6ft! Even with Chris (6’3″) not standing straight he’s still inches taller than Fassie.

  37. CitizenErased says:

Ahh, Officer Rhodes and Fassbender together in one photo, my hormones can’t take the hotness *swoons extravagantly*

  38. galaxygirl says:

    😀 Very Appealing

  39. Ramie says:

  41. gemmaa says:

My favourite couple! They are both hilarious, she especially on twitter.

  42. jojo says:

Is it just me or does he have something in common with that Aussie cutie pie Ben Lee?

  43. skuddles says:

Whoa that first pic… a face only a mother could love. But as I scrolled down I could see he’s actually cuter than that, just a tad bit cross eyed looking.

  44. katy says:

K, that was a hilarious interview. This guy is awesome lol

  45. Amy says:

I thought the IT Crowd so incredibly, unwatchably bad, but I love Chris O’Dowd and Richard Ayoade.
