Garrett Hedlund, K-Stew in the first ‘On the Road’ trailer: decent or sketchy?

It’s been more than a decade since I read On the Road. Actually… longer than that. I read it several times in my teenage years, but I haven’t touched it since then. I still remember the feelings I had about the book, the rush, the excitement over Jack Kerouac’s writing style… but I don’t remember much of the actual story. Like, when I was 16 years old, I thought, “This is how I’m going to live when I get older. It going to be like this.” And that’s the idea I had of these characters too – Sal Paradise and Dean Moriarty were ADULTS. They were MEN. And now that Kerouac’s immortal book has been adapted for the screen, I’m not sure how I feel about these actors playing these roles. The character of Dean Moriarty – based on Kerouac’s friend Neal Cassady – is being played by Garrett Hedlund. While I like Hedlund as an actor, I still feel like the Dean character should have been played by an older actor. Maybe that’s just in my head, though.

Anyway, the trailer. It’s okay. Sam Riley plays Sal Paradise – I’ve never seen Riley in anything, so I can’t speak to his acting talent. He seems fine in the trailer – once again, I wasn’t imagining the character to seem so young, but youth works better on the Sal character/narrator. Sal is a lot like the Nick Carroway character in The Great Gatsby – a naïf-narrator who experiences the central characters through wide-eyed romanticism. Kristen Stewart plays Dean’s wife. K-Stew dances in the trailer. It’s kind of cute. Also appearing in the film: Kirsten Dunst, Viggo Mortensen, Terrence Howard, Tom Sturridge and Amy Adams.

Well, I’m sure K-Stew will get a lot of press from the film, but it feels like this is sort of a balls-out career make-or-break moment for Hedlund. If he screwed up his performance, the film falls apart. Thankfully, it seems like Hedlund is doing some very interesting work here.

    it looks very decent

The only thing that stands out about this, is K-Stew’s lack of line in the trailer. Kiki got one.

    • nadia says:

lol, Sal got maybe three words in the trailer, and he’s the lead character. There’s an older male voiceover doing most of the work, including quoting important text. Mary Lou’s dismissed as a dumbo by Sal initially, it’s not her words that get the attention, it’s her antics(codeword: Cold Cream).

    • kae says:

im suprised that THAT is what stands out to you.. seriously, is having a line in the trailer really that important?.. A lot of people have been waiting for this movie for so long and trust me, its not because of kristen stewart.

      • Lila says:

Seriously, I love nearly every person involved in this film (I’m meh on Stewart and Hedlund)…I am so annoyed that people are trashing this just because Stewart is in it.

      • nina says:

honestly, I think it’s a small group of “rogue” twihards who fixate on rob and don’t like his gf. I’ve seen the same “they gave her no lines!” comment on a couple other blogs with the trailer. It’s like they congregate online, get their talking points and then go forth to “preach.” lol Whatevers, OTR is awesome, there’s no room for that silliness here when you’ve got a work in progress for decades finally coming to fruition.

This is not a Kristen movie so before you people start to hate just give it a chance

  4. DesertRose says:

It looks like it could be good. I have hopes for this one, and while Dean’s casting seems young, if they had made him too old he would have been instantly disliked for marrying so young. K-Stew actually seems to have personality, but she is playing a wild teenager after all, so let’s hope she can nail it.

  5. nadia says:

Looks better than I expected. OTR is a bit of a hot mess to rein in for a coherent narrative. But Salles seems to have captured the spirit of the era while giving the tale some much needed direction.

Garrett played a great psycho in a mob movie once, I think he has it in him to play Dean. Sam Riley was GENIUS in “Control,”, and Kristen does wild child just fine ala Into the Wild. Her youthful appearance helps with playing a 16 year old.

  6. Elke says:

I’ve been waiting for this movie ever since I read Kerouac’s “On the Road” back in the summer of ’74. I was amazed by the story and characters. I hope this movie does it justice. Although I always pictured the male characters as older and not so pretty as these actors. Ah, Hollywood.

  7. mia girl says:

Hedlund was 25 and Riley 30 when they filmed the movie which does seem to correlate with Kerouac and Moriatry’s age range when they had the travels the book is based on.

I think this looks really good.

    • mia girl says:

Im mixing up reality and fiction. Kerouac and Cassidy. Or Paradise and Moriarty. Not a cross of the two!

  8. tori says:

    Looks really good

  9. Coucou says:

Thank you Asli, i support you in your resistanct to bash K-stew! So the vampire movies were stupid, but i always thought this girl had a lot more to offer and now we’ll get to see. I haven’t seen her Joan Jet film yet, either. I hope she’s great!

    • phlyfiremama says:

The Runaways was a great portrayal of a momemnt in time~I thought KStew did a great job as Joan Jett. I think she has a LOT more to offer than just being Bella…

  10. Cleveland Girl says:

Maybe they wanted to appeal to a younger audience. My children (ages 17, 19, 21) LOVE this book. They probably wanted to appeal to that age group as well as the rest of us who read it back in the 70s.

  11. phlyfiremama says:

It looks awesome~I will be seeing this in the theater.

  12. Sasha says:

I love Sam Riley. He was fantastic in Control and even BETTER in Brighton Rock. Serious love for him.

Kristen looks like great casting for this part. To be honest.. I think Bella is just a shitty role for any actress – not in terms of exposure and all that, obviously – but I mean as a character. Bella is so lifeless and pathetic.. who could really make Bella deep or likeable?? I think this film will showcase Kristen’s talent (if she has real talent, which I think she might!).

  13. normades says:

Looks great. I LOVE Sam Riley.

  14. grey says:

I’m older but I love Garrett Hedlund. If I was younger I’d have some massive schoolgirl crush on that kid. I’m surprised he hasn’t gotten bigger in Hollywood faster. He’s got the pretty boy looks down pat.

  15. mln76 says:

It actually looks good. There seems to be a decent supporting cast and it seems to capture the spirit of the work. I may check this out.

  16. aquarius64 says:

This is the 1st site I’ve seen that is not hyping the “Bella gets buck naked and buck wild” aspect of this film.

  17. ok says:

I love Kristen and Garrett so this is my cup of tea

  18. Lila says:

I’m really excited…I love Sam Riley and Walter Salles. What annoys me are all the people on blogs who are like “I hate Kristen Stewart so I won’t see this movie.” Seriously, people won’t see a movie just because they don’t like one of the actors (who isn’t even a main character). To me, that is taking it a bit too far (unless it is someone like racist ranty Mel Gibson). Anyway, I so want this movie to do well because I love me some Sam Riley and I want him to succeed in America…I do think it will too, because Salles is a genius.

    • nina says:

omg, Sam Riley is so talented and great, I hope he gets more jobs too because of this. And I think Kristen will be fine, people just like to bag on her cause she’s making money of sparkle vamps.

  19. almond says:

The trailer looks promising and all the leads seem to be emoting in subtle, understated ways. The rest of the cast is very talented. I have high hopes for this.
Keeping fingers crossed that it will be shown in the original version in France.

  20. Jules says:

Oh how I love me some Garrett Hedlund! I even saw Country Strong just because he was in it. 🙂

  21. kingkayski says:

I like watching 50’s, 60’s,&70’s movies,i like the movie making of that era.The peoples outfit, houses, cars, scenery. They seems so beautiful ,interesting&exciting, even their lifestyle. And Salles seems to captures all the needed energy of that era on that trailer,i can’t wait to watch this movie.

  22. laurielou2 says:

This movie might stand a chance if Kristin Stewart doesn’t utter a single word in the movie, the way she doesn’t in the trailer.
