Madonna responds to MDNA criticism: “I don’t support drug use and I never have”

As we discussed earlier today, Deadmau5 bashed the hell out of Madonna after Madge made a “molly” reference at the Ultra Music Festival over the weekend. Madge allegedly said to the crowd, “How many people in this crowd have seen Molly?” After which Deadmau5 took to Twitter to call Madge a “f–king idiot” amongst other things, and he also wrote a lengthy piece about personal responsibility with the likes of public figures advocating drug use, or worse, simply “pander” to drug-using audiences.

Madonna has responded in kind of Deadmau5 by releasing the header photo to media outlets with the message: “From one mouse to another. I don’t support drug use and I never have. I was referring to the song called ‘Have You Seen Molly’ written by my friend Cedric Gervais who I almost worked with on my last album …” And it’s true – there is a person named Cedric Gervais who has a song called “Have You Seen Molly”. There’s even a clip of the music video:

… So the song and the video are about club kids taking drugs, correct? And Madonna was making reference to THAT? Sure. I still think Deadmau5’s original point holds, perhaps even more now. Madonna doesn’t use drugs, but she’ll pander to “the kids,” who in her mind, are all about super-cool drugs. Madonna knew that both “molly” and “MDNA” were specific drug references and it feels weird that she’s trying to backtrack. Or something. Maybe she just wants to extent the controversy, like in the old days.

    She’s such a fool.

    • Veruca says:

      Funny, I was thinking “tool”.

    • JoJo says:

An old has-been fool at that. She really needs to grow up and stop being such a f-ing joke. It’s just not cool at all to try and act like you’ve still got it when you obviously don’t have a clue anymore what it’s all about. Dumb beyotch.

      • iloveretro says:

        +1

Can you say “pathetically desperate to stay relevant”, Madonna?

I detest this b*tch. Always have, can’t imagine it would ever change. I feel sorry for her kids, both bio and adopted. I don’t care much for him, either, but Guy Richie had a miraculous escape.

    • Tiffany says:

There are so many ways that she could make great, current pop music without having to sacrifice her dignity to do it. She can still look hot without wearing embarassing hot pants that show her butt cheeks. She doesn’t have to make music that sounds like Avril Lavigne in order to sound youthful. She doesn’t have to drop OBVIOUS drug references in order to get the dance crowd to support her cd (hint: just make good dance music).

She looks so desperate because she is trying so hard, and she really doesn’t have to. Like with this comment: it was clearly in reference to drugs, and she should own it or not say it at all. DeadMau5 was right on target with his comments.

    • Louminary says:

Theres no fool like an OLD fool

      • Carolyn says:

I don’t get it. Madonna has had a stellar career already and longevity that these 5-year acts (hi Katy, Rhianna, Bieber) would kill for…why is she still going? Plus she’s honestly a music icon. Surely she has enough $$ to retire from the music world and do something else? She’s too old for this. I’d say the same if a guy was doing it too. PS she was a wild child – she would have been exposed to drugs along the way up.

    • EBitch says:

She an old hag and a fool. And her new album is garbage.

  2. Nanz says:

Is the mouse ears picture an old one? It looks like her 1980s face. I miss that face so much.

  3. Rhiley says:

Golly, Madonna was so cute back in the day. I love those eyebrows and her skin is gorgeous. Yoga, macrobiotic diet, cigarettes, and plastic surgery have destroyed her looks.

    • jc126 says:

Seriously! I think she must deeply regret all that smoking, because it seriously took a toll on her skin. What a shame. She seemed to have stayed out of the sun, probably thought she’d avoid a lot of skin damage that way.
Two things I wish I’d known when I was younger – sugar is aging, and always wear sunglasses! Sunscreen is not enough.

      • Carolyn says:

Yes. I thought she looked OK until I revisited photos of her when younger. She was beautiful back then. My fave look of hers is the short hair in Cherish. Yes I was a teenager in the 80’s and have followed her all the way. Until the last 5 years 🙂

  4. Nerd Momma says:

What on earth does “one mouse to another” mean?

    • Nerd Momma says:

I figured it out. deadmau5 is pronounced “dead mouse” and wears a big mouse head during performances. Madonna is a huge dork, but at least through this little “controversy” I am finding out who this DJ is. I totally respect him for calling her out on this.

    • Zola says:

I bet she’s also implying she did the Mickey Mouse ears first. She’s highly competitive and loves to say she got there 1st (ignoring the fact that she constantly copies others).

In her bio., Courtney Love talked about a conversation with Madonna. They talked about the princess crown which Courtney wore for the album, Live Through This. Madonna told Courtney she could wear it better than her. Then, for her next album, Madonna wore a princess crown with jeans. Typical Madonna.

  5. Zigggy says:

And it’s embarrassing- the middle aged woman trying to allude that she’s hip with the young club kids and their slang for drug usage.
    Fontrom- is that the word?

    • Hautie says:

Desperate. That is the word to use.

Had someone told me in 1988, that Madonna would be reeking of desperation in 2012. I would have not believed it.

But here she is… covered in it.

  6. TruthTella says:

So she’s at a club and isn’t aloud to mention a SONG because it’s about drugs… People need to grow up, she’s a pop star not a life coach.

    • Nev says:

      word.

she ain’t Oprah or Hilary Clinton.

      lighten up folks.dance.

    • gigi says:

Please. You know exactly what she was alluding to. It wasn’t just about a song title, as she claims, it was about her trying to be cool about drugs (just even saying it sounds ridiculous) and yes, the song is about that too.

    • sandra says:

Why mention that song if it’s not on your album? That’s a totally random shout out …. she was just trying to be cool with the club kids. Why are we still discussing her? She needs to go away now too.

    • blah says:

There have been an alarming number of ecstasy related deaths in the West End of Canada in the past 6 months to a year- people are dropping like flies. It’s especially disconcerting because ecstasy is believed to be reasonably safe. Like it or not Madonna is high profile and has a large fan base. While she doesn’t have to be a role model or America’s sweetheart, it wouldn’t hurt for her to be responsible with what she says. Especially when it concerns people dying.

  7. GiGi says:

Hahaha – I know Cedric… Who know if she’s telling the truth but I’m sure he’s glad she name dropped him 😉

  8. a nony mouse says:

madge, honey, you’re rich, you’re successful, you’re an icon. just PUT IT AWAY ALREADY.

  9. MST says:

I wonder how she would feel if Lourdes said she knows “Molly.”

  10. HappyJoyJoy says:

In her defense, it was ULTRA, not Live Aid or some kind of humanitarian deal. Do you all honestly believe kids flock to these types of festivals JUST for the music? Ofcourse not. Deadmau5 should know better. He’s been pushing these kind of events for a loooooong time. And Madonna, well she’s in her 50’s, these type of comments are just to stay relevant. Nothing else. Don’t take her so serious, she already does that for herself.

  11. skuddles says:

If she has to try that hard to be “cool” then maybe it’s time to just stop trying…

  12. Gaia132 says:

Not defending Madonna at all but Deadmau5 is a well known drug user….

  13. Onyx XV says:

She’s always been like this. Tries just a tad too hard to be hip. Her marketing skills are the basis of her success, it surely isn’t her voice.

  14. Trillion says:

The prob is, she wants it both ways: To be on record as anti-drug, but then use drug refs to seem cool. That’s what so lame about this. It’s not the drug reference itself, to me, it’s more the poseurliness of it.

  15. Gene Parmesan says:

Close your legs old lady… your cob webbed nethers blinds us

  16. Adrien says:

DeadMau5? I keep reading that as dead-mau-five but the mouse head tells me it’s pronounced as dead mouse. I was about to ask what happened to Deadmau4,3,2 and 1.

Ok he’s an EDM producer/DJ. I get his point.

  17. poof says:

I agree with all of the comments above. But its Mdma not Mdna. Not trying to be a smartass ar anything. I’m in the medical field.

    • waitingforsummer says:

Thank you. That was driving me crazy. MDNA is mitochondrial dna, MDMA is “Molly,” ecstacy, etc.

    • Tiffany says:

The drug is MDMA, and her cd is titled MDNA (as in Madonna, but spelled like the drug).

    • iseepinkelefant says:

It was bothering me too. I was like geez I haven’t taken MDMA since I was in high school (2003), but I’m pretty sure it’s mdma, not mdNa.

  18. Jennifer12 says:

She’s backtracking because someone she thinks is cool hates her and had the balls to take a stance. It’s great to show people that being in your 50s can still be sexy and fun and even relevant, but her desperate attempts to stay young and what she thinks of as relevant is undermining her. She’s a total idiot.

  19. Heather says:

Deadmau5 is always finding something ot bitch about.

  20. flan says:

Funny, does he say that to rappers too?

Or is he too afraid of them/does not care if their audience gets influenced in a bad way?

Madonna is an easy target now, let him find some harder ones.

    • CN says:

The reason he said it to Madonna, as I understand it, is that she came on after him. But in addition, Madonna presents herself these days as a beacon of clean living, and eschews drugs. I don’t know of any rappers who have openly taken anti-drug stances as she has.

  21. kira says:

I bet Madonna is downright giddy over this: “Yeah me! I caused yet another E-SCANDAL! Bow down to the Queen of controversy!” 😉

What’s the point of naming your album MDNA, and doing the molly song/reference, if you didn’t want to stir up the pot? Her game is pretty obvious–anything for attention.

  22. Maya says:

Madonna has ceased being creative or artistic for a decade or so. She has now crept into the domain of desperate older woman.
Even Tina Turner knew when to elegantly retire. Madonna has become ridiculous.

  23. blah says:

I wish Madonna quit making albums and retired after Confessions on a Dance Floor. It was great music, she wasn’t whoring herself out in embarrassing ways to promote the album, and she was very deferential and grateful to the producer Stuart Price, acknowledging that the album was a success because of his musical genius. Plus she hadn’t messed with her face too much and was still hot. I’ll never forget hearing about how she was taken aback and in tears when the album reached number one, because she’d taken it for granted that her career was over and she wasn’t relevant anymore. Her humbleness about the whole thing made her so likeable.

It would have been so wonderful for her to retire on that note. But the success made her fame hungry again. Kissing Britney Spears and doing a faux lesbian vid with her, her horrible directorial efforts, subsequent mediocre albums. Why Madonna! Why must you ruin a good thing!

  24. Hanna says:

Old bitch needs to settle down… Damn.

  25. Random Devotchka says:

I agree entirely with Madonna just wanting controversy for her album. She changes for each CD and for “MDNA” she seems to be trying very hard to be old Madonna (releasing old photos of herself, dressing up as Marilyn Monroe and getting M.I.A. and Nicky Minaj dressed “Like a Virgin,” etc…). If she’s really pressed for ideas, maybe she’ll go back to the “Disco Flapper” look from “Confessions on the Dance Floor” I liked that look : )
