It feels like this Total Recall remake was years in the making, but really, we’ve only been hearing about it for the past year, year and a half. I have to confess something horrible: I LOVE the original Total Recall, which starred Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sharon Stone, Ronny Cox, etc. It’s such a bizarre, crazy sci-fi film, and I’ve seen it about a million times. When I heard they were remaking it, I obviously had the “Blah, how unnecessary, etc” thoughts. And I still kind of think that, although the cast of the remake seems slightly interesting, as does the first big trailer for the film. Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale… and Jessica Biel. Ugh.
Initial thoughts – the dude from Saving Grace (Bokeem Woodbine)! Bryan Cranston!! And John Cho? Jessica Biel is barely in the trailer, did you notice? She plays the “Melina” character, which is arguably the bigger and more important role as opposed to Kate Beckinsale’s fake-wife character. But Beckinsale is married to the director, so I’m guessing that’s why she has a bigger part in the trailer. It doesn’t hurt that Biel always seems like she’s sleepwalking through her roles too.
Also: WTF are old-school storm troopers doing in here? That bugs – the design for the “police” armor should have been different, so they don’t bump up against Star Wars.
Here’s a fun little SPOILER (but if you’ve seen the original movie, you’ll want to know): guess who plays Kuato? Bill Nighy! OMG.

Why is that horrible? Total Recall is a very good action/sci-fi movie. I’m not ashamed to say that I love almost everything Paul Verhoeven did in the 70s and 80s (I LOVE Robocop and Flesh+Blood). Some of his Dutch movies, especially the ones featuring Rutger Hauer, are f*cking great.
Yes — I, too, hate remakes of the 80s and 90s “classics” as much as the next person but…I’ll be watching this one for sure.
I already knew Bill Nighy was in it so there were no spoilers for me now. I’m guessing he’s only voicing Kuato — or is he doing motion capture too? If so, that’s awesome.
I love Total Recall; I watched it last week! I was afraid of what they were going to do to my movie but I bite I’ll go see it. I just think Kate should have been cast as Melina. Jessica Biel blahhhhhh
Neither Biel nor Beckinsale was a good choice, in my opinion. But I knew the latter would be in the movie since the director was Len Wiseman.
Considering the cast (as it is), I do believe that Beckinsale as Melina and Biel as Lori would make more sense.
Melina was supposed to be average, while his wife was supposed to be smoking hot. As much as I dislike Biel, she’s definitely average and boring compared to Kate’s hotness.
Since this remake isn’t supposed to be identical to the first one, I’m hoping that the Melina character isn’t shown as much. I will watch it at some point, but definitely won’t be catching this on in the theater.
Oh Yeah! I’m going to see this movie. Loved the first one and Collin looks good.
If I will see it? A million times YES. If Channing Tatum can become a bankable star, then Colin Farrell definitely also deserves a comeback (have lotsa affection for In Bruges).
And yeah, Biel sounded hollow even with 1 line in the trailer.

I love the original, too. Going to see this one for sure because Colin looks GOOD and I love when he pulls out the American accent. Plus, the trailer is pretty good, too.
He is sooo hot. And I love that he seems to have gotten himself together and off the Lohan path of destruction. Plus I’ve heard interviews with him and he seems so complicated and honest…and hot…did I say hot….
Again with the remakes!

they filmed part of this movie on the street i live on. the blvd was shut down for a couple weeks. was a pain in the ass for residents, but the sets looked very cool.
So this is the movie he had to choose over Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis.

I love the original too, but I’m willing to see this one. I just wish sci-fi movies focused more on plot and less on blowing sh*t up. Not all sci-fi lovers are 12 year old boys.

The trailer is kind of crap, but I’ll probably end up renting it (even though I can’t stand Biel).
To be honest when i was watching the trailer i was really was wanting to watch the movie until Jessica Biel came into the scene and i X out the video right away ! I said oh hell no ! hahahaha

Save a seat for me! Maybe we’ll get lucky and he’ll read it with an American accent first and then again in that lyrical, Irish tongue (see what I did put the word tongue in a sentence about Farrell? If this worked on you than spare me the “In Bruges” was marvelous, he’s talented, he’s vulnerable, he’s funny because while he is all of that primarily he is smokin’ hot!)
