Karl Lagerfeld sent Adele a ton of Chanel purses as an apology for his “fat” comment

Adele

Back in February, Karl Lagerfeld name-dropped Adele in an interview. According to The Kaiser, Adele was “a little too fat” but “she has a beautiful face and a divine voice.” Everyone got all up in arms about it and a few days later, Karl wrote out some kind of apology/clarification regarding Adele, and he made it seem like he was and is a true fan of Adele’s. Basically, he adores the girl and he was sorry that his criticism got so much play. Now the British tabloids claim that Karl is making it up to Adele by drowning her in Chanel handbags.

He has already publicly apologised for his headline-making comments. But Karl Lagerfeld has upped his grovelling privately to Adele, whom he famously called ‘a little too fat’. The Chanel Creative director has appealed to the Grammy-winner’s love of fashion and sent her a range of the label’s coveted handbags.

According to The Sun, ‘He told his team to send Adele the best the fashion house have to offer after hearing she collected bags. He’s annoyed with himself because he ended up insulting her when he meant to compliment her. He thinks she’s beautiful and calls her divine.’

Lagerfeld, 78, backtracked on the comments made to a French magazine earlier this year. The jibes caused an uproar from fans, with even Madonna wading into the scandal, calling Lagerfeld’s words ‘horrible.’ Adele chose not to comment directly, but told People magazine in a well-timed interview, ‘I represent the majority of women and I’m very proud of that.’

Within days, the German designer had issued a grovelling statement to the Someone Like You star. ‘I’d like to say to Adele that I am your biggest admirer,’ he said at the time. ‘Sometimes when you take a sentence out of the article it changes the meaning of the thought. Adele is my favorite singer and I am a great admirer of her.’

Lagerfeld added that he admired Adele for being so strong in the face of comments regarding her weight.

He said: ‘I lost over 30 kilos over 10 years ago and have kept it off. I know how it feels when the press is mean to you in regards to your appearance. Adele is a beautiful girl. She is the best. And I can’t wait for her next CD.’

Clearly feeling that he has not done enough to get back in her good graces, Karl is now showering Adele with gifts, including the iconic quilted handbags and totes.

‘He said he really wanted to make it up to her so they could maybe work together in the future.’

[From The Mail]

I was going to make a crack about Karl not being able to send her Chanel clothes because Chanel doesn’t make Adele’s size, but I think the purse thing was explained – she collects them. Adele is a purse person, JUST LIKE ME! We’re totally BFFs.

Meanwhile, Adele has given a new radio interview, and she confirmed that she’s going to release new music this year!

Rumor has it Adele’s got some new tunes in the works. Speaking to French radio station NRJ Monday, the six-time Grammy winner confirmed she plans to release a new single in 2012–although she says it will be at least two years before another full-length album hits shelves.

Citing the two-year period between the release of her first CD, 19, and 21, Adele opened up about her approach to recording. “I have to take time and live a little bit,” she told the station’s host. “It’ll be the same this time.”

Added the “Someone Like You” songstress, 23, “If I didn’t write my own songs, I’d be out next week with a new album.”

Despite 21’s massive success (the album has sold over 20 million copies worldwide), the ever-modest Brit is keeping her expectations low for any future releases.

“I don’t think I’ll feel the pressure for the next album to be as big as the last one, because I know that’s not really possible,” Adele told NRJ. “What happened with [21] is very rare anyway.”

Though plans for a new record are very much up in the air, Adele has already thought about some potential collaborators. Her dream duet? With the Queen Bey herself.

“I adore Beyonce,” the pop star admitted. “I’ve been listening to her since I was about 11. I think her work as an artist and a singer is enviable in terms of the length of her career and how she’s grown and grown.”

[From Us Weekly]

Adele name-checks Beyonce all the time, and I do think Adele respects, admires and loves Beyonce. But Adele also knows that their careers are not the same, and Adele views herself as a different kind of artist. Still, it’s nice to think that Beyonce might agree to a duet with Adele. That might be kind of cool.

  2. brin says:

You can call me fat, Karl! *will take insult for Chanel purse*

  3. Eileen says:

Karl looks like a melting robot.

  4. lin234 says:

Last time I looked at the prices, Chanel jumbo’s are priced at 5 grand a pop. Gah! Makes me want to take a quick peep at her purse collection. Nice apology!

I’ve been known to try to compliment someone but managed to stick my foot in my mouth at times so I get where he’s coming from.

  5. Franny says:

YAY!!!! I am so so so happy to hear that she is going to come out with new music soon. I hope she goes on tour soon though – I would pay so so so much money to see her live.

What I would give to have a Chanel purse though.

  6. Liz says:

    I’d send them all back.

    • gg says:

I’d sell them and give the money to the homeless. It’s criminal what they charge for these tiny, impractical suitcases that carry a lipstick and a couple of cards. Never could understand why people pay 1, 2, 3k-+ for a stupid looking purse.

  7. MrsBarneyStinson says:

I’ll let myself get called fat anytime if it means tons of Chanel purses in return! 😀

  8. lucy2 says:

I loved how he tried the “taken out of context” excuse, as so many celebs in trouble do!
I can’t wait for her next album, but am glad she’s taking her time with it and doing it right.

  9. Chatcat says:

Hey walking corpse man…just because you didn’t like yourself looking like a normal human being 10 years ago don’t go digging on beautiful 20 something women. You and your fashion designs are nothing but POS and Adele can buy her own Chanel bags due to her accomplishments. Success is the best revenge and she has it. If he “knew how mean it was” then he of all people should have let the undertaker keep his mouth stiched shut!

  10. really says:

I hope that she extends her vegetarianism to her wardrobe, and sends them back. And gets rid of the top coat, if the fur trim is real.

    • gg says:

It definitely looks like faux fur to me. The tips look stiffer than real hair. Something tells me she wouldn’t be one to go around wearing real fur, not caring about what others think, like some other people I can think of …

Anyway, I cannot believe those lame quilted Chanel bags are still supposed to be in style. They look like tarted up diaper bags.

  11. CS says:

Oh no, Adele, tell me that’s not real fur on your poncho…:( Please.

  12. Maya says:

I wouldn’t have thought that he thought negatively of her. He did have Beth Ditto’s music [and sitting in the front row of his shows] and had no issue with her and she is three or four times the size of Adele.

I think it’s the way it came out.

  13. Jessica says:

I cant stand these gloves the older people wear to hide their hands… MADONNA????

  14. Eleonor says:

Cunty Karl knows how to make a woman happy!

  15. sup says:

oddly enough i don’t think he was trying to be mean when he said that she’s a little bit fat. i think he actually likes her and he did correct himself and said she’s beautiful girl. anyway this is nice of him too. these kind of little jests are when you go “aww” and can’t remain mad at uncle karl for long.

    • gg says:

Old people are very frank, usually. Their filter deteriorates.

      • sup says:

yeah and karl has been extremely frank for a while. i don’t recall him being that loud when he was younger. he got opinionated a while after losing all the extra weight.

      • Coucou says:

“Their filter deteriorates.” Yeah, like John Galliano -but so much worse!

      • sup says:

@Coucou uhh, I think Galliano’s was much, much worse

  16. Lisa says:

    Dear Karl:

    Apology accepted.

    Sincerely, Adele

  17. some bitch says:

    Dear Karl,

    No. F–k off.

  18. ciel says:

adele, burn the damned bag! it’s not enough of apology. it’s not sincere. i don’t think so.

  19. Meecey says:

Melting robot. Too funny!!!! As for the apology I respect it and Karl for doing it. We all say things we regret at least he is man enough to say oops here’s a gift. It would be rude to send them back, as I think he is being sincere. Give em to ur friends. As for the fur, I don’t agree with wearing it, so yes take it off, A! And as a vegeterian since I was 9, welcome aboard!

  20. daz says:

how is karl not the next bond villain, can someone please explain to me ?????? only missing the white cat!

    • Eleonor says:

Ahaah he will be perfect. At the beginning of Zoolandar there was a character which resembled Karl!

  21. Laura says:

Do you think she’s referring to people like Rihanna etc when she talks about being able to churn out albums if she didn’t write her own songs? I think it’s a very accurate comment and certain people should sit up and take note! I hope she’s around for many, many years longer than certain pop stars…

  22. Cleo says:

That flesh tone bag actually looks like it’s made out of PEOPLE.

  23. Francesca says:

Karl is a former fatty; he knows the pain of pointed comments. He should make her a dress in my opinion. or 10. for free!
