Is Kristen Stewart dissing Twilight when she says she’s “proud” of ‘SWATH’?

What is it with me lately? I feel like I’m in the midst of a new Era of Kristen Stewart-Love. Maybe not “love” but I’ve been on her side a bit more lately. Kristen has a new interview with the Australian magazine Film Ink (sidenote: the source could also be the UK’s Total Film), and many outlets are interpreting these quotes as “Kristen disrespects Twilight, she’s only proud of Snow White and the Huntsman.” Except I don’t think she’s really drawing a direct parallel between the Bella Swan character and the Snow White character – she’s just talking about how cool Snow White is, full-stop.

K-Stew delivers a major diss to Bella while talking about why she loves her upcoming blockbuster — see her shocking words!

Kristen Stewart loves Twilight, but it seems she has some harsh words for her passive character Bella Swan when comparing her to the thrilling heroine of her upcoming film Snow White and the Huntsman!

K-Stew, 22, tells Australia’s Film Ink magazine that Snow White is a better role than Bella.

“It is fairly common to have your story as a woman, even if you’re the protagonist, facilitated by all of the male characters,” she said. “It’s so rare to have a female lead character being so proactive. She pushers her own story forward, rather then being affected by all of the outside elements. Hopefully we do that, I’m really proud to be a part of something like that. It’s always good for women to feel empowered.”

Stewart’s Snow White is more Joan of Arc that Disney’s princess. “It’s cool to play a character who’s able to step outside of herself and consider others in an almost supernatural way. But, at the same time know that she’s human and has those struggles and still fights for herself as well. She’s the essential leader. The definitions of a hero… so many of our heroes are a–holes. They find pleasure in hurting people. She doesn’t. Yet she can seriously take care of business.”

See? All the build-up is “OMG, she hates Bella, just read her quote!” And the quote is just about Snow White and only about Snow White. Look, I have no doubt that Kristen doesn’t really have any respect or reverence for the franchise that made her a household name – at best, she has very mixed, angst-y feelings towards Twilight, and at worst, playing Bella has been the worst thing that’s ever happened to her (in her mind). But I’m going to wait until she says something explicit about how much she hates Twilight, you know? Because right now she’s just promoting SWATH, and she’s talking about how much she likes THAT character. Which is fine. *throws glitter on the post* LEAVE KRISTEN ALONE!

…which is why I signed up for no less than FIVE movies romanticising an abusive relationship.

    Girl Power!!

      Well said!

      spot on.

    • Blake says:

She was also 17 or 18 when she agreed to be in the Twilight movies and I’m sure signed a contract that locked her into all the movies they wanted to make. I don’t know many teenagers that are experts at relationships and would read a book like Twilight and see Bella and Edwards relationship as abusive – just “OMGZ HE LUVZ ME, HE’Z SO ROMANTIC <3 <3". Also, when she signed on for the movie she probably had no idea it would become as huge as it did. She just did it perhaps because she thought "Oh, a movie about glittery vampires and werewolves? Sure why not. I'll make some cash out of it too".

      • Orly says:

“Oh, a movie about glittery vampires and werewolves? Sure why not. I’ll make some cash out of it too”.

Except that she has made a point of telling the world how selective she is about her movie roles and how she has always been that way. At the time she signed on for twi, she had already been working for 8 years in the business.

    • only1shmoo says:

Cut K.S. a little slack. She was still a kid when she signed up for ‘Twilight’, and she said she hadn’t even read the books prior to getting the part.

She’s been pretty diplomatic about her views on Bella. Any self-respecting woman knows that Bella’s a whiny, irritating, selfish, needy, and passive-aggressive “heroine”, but she’s helped boost Kristin’s career nonetheless.

  3. Katie says:

To this I say, whatever. I still don’t like her.

  4. Monkey Jim says:

SIGH. I’ve said before that not only do I like her, I don’t understand why she provokes SUCH loathing. I’ve never heard rumours of diva behavior and never seen pics of her falling out of nightclub cracked out & flashing us her minky. She doesn’t even mention Bella/Twilight here. It IS a crappy, passive role – only seen first 2 films, and no plans to see the others, thanks – but she was 17 when she signed up. She’ll prob be glad to put the whole thing behind her this year.

    • Camille (The original) says:

      +1. I agree.

    • Tiffany says:

I agree. I saw her first in Adventureland and thought she gave a really good performance (she isn’t my favorite actress by any means, but she is far from awful). I too saw only the first 2 Twilight movies…the movies sucked, but so did the books.

I don’t understand why people give her such a hard time. Kind of crazy.

  5. marie says:

I’m kinda “meh” when it comes to Kristen. She’s promoting SWATH, and I’m sure when she promotes the last Twilight (the end can not come soon enough) she’ll say something in favor of Bella.. Even if she is dissing Bella, I don’t disagree with anything she said. Give the girls a kick-ass heroine to look up to rather than a weepy lip-biting doormat..

    • MrsBarneyStinson says:

Saw your comment after posting mine. We have similar sentiments.

    • CC says:

Yea, it would actually be a bit insulting if she directly brought Twilight into it while promoting a different movie. A professional has to, at some point or another, and especially when not giving a general interview, focus on each work as “unique” and promote its pluses.

She already had her “foot in mouth” moment in the first twilight, I’m sure she’s been coached about it.

  6. MrsBarneyStinson says:

Whatever anyone’s feelings for Kristen are, at the end of the day she’s an actress. She’ll have to promote her film in one way or the other.

She says she likes strong, empowering women to promote her newest movie, for the next (and thankfully last) Twilight movie, she’ll gush about how absolutely cool Bella is. Many actors do this. It’s in their job description.

  8. Sam says:

Feels like she’s slagging off Bella, which she should. “It is fairly common to have your story as a woman, even if you’re the protagonist, facilitated by all of the male characters,” Pretty much sums up Bella. Maybe it’s not a direct attack on the character but it’s definitely a reference to it. Bella sucks. It’s barbaric that such a pathetic character draws hoards of tweens and adult women to the cinema.

  9. Scrambled Eggs says:

Aftet seeing and reading a few interviews with Miss Stewert, I’m going to need to hear audio on this one. The wording sounds very out of character for her and not a curse word was used.

  10. Maya says:

Ah the girl with only one trick in her acting bag – the bitten lip.

    • Sphinx says:

That is SO unfair. She is versatile! she lip bites, pushes at her hair AND twitches. HDU!!!!!!!

  11. the original almond says:

She’s doing promotional work. She has to sell the movie, and her character, to the audience. I’m sure she’s glad to play a mainstream role which does not require massive amounts of neediness and codependency. But as everyone else said, when the promotional tour for the last twicrap movie is coming she’ll be saying nice things about that character. Though, admittedly, it’s a bit harder to praise it and not be full of bullsh*t.

I’m also willing to bet my favorite pair of shoes that she did not spew that entire paragraph as is. I’m so in awe of the journalists who manage to form coherent interviews from her answers. She never finishes a sentence without opening endless parentheses and going off course from the topic. “Speak more good”, indeed.

  12. Jade says:

Nah. She she seems to defend Bella a lot in other interviews.
Plus SWATH is yet another female empowerment story born out of violence/death. We need more female empowerment story born out of sex/desire.

  13. T.C. says:

    Kaiser

I think it is Twilight you hated not really Kstew. You like Snow White and The Huntsman, that’s why you are finally starting to like Kstew. No one likes that sissy Bella character. Dying to be with a man? No close female friends, no hobbies? I can’t even get over how messed up that character is for young girls to be exposed to.

  14. Kristen says:

SWATH may have that kind of character, but she’s totally only saying this to try and push back at some of the Kristen Stewart/Bella – Jennifer Lawrence/Katniss comparisons.

  15. Shay Kay says:

^^^^Yes to everything Kaiser said! I find myself giving her a second chance. She’s much more appealing and actually has a beautiful face when she isn’t sulking, hiding, biting, or pouting!

  16. Elizabeth says:

Did she hurt her arm? She is holding it so strangely in the photos like its injured and needs to be in a sling.

    • OlsenTriplet says:

It’s a pretty serious condition called T-Rex Arm-itis. Hope it doesn’t spread to her other arm…

  17. Cathy says:

She’d be very pretty if she smiled now and then. Learn to smile girl.

  18. Karen says:

She has dead eyes. She always looks bored or half asleep. Learn to smize, girl!

  19. Dee Cee says:

She complained was forced to play the twilight character Bella as ordered despite her misgivings and showing the director other methods.. she was therefore dulled down,. stagnant and weirdly emotionless in some pivotal scenes which she regrets.

    • Andrea says:

lmao, are you serious? She acts dull and emotionless in every single movie she does. And is always the same, puffing, twitching, lip biting and pushing her hair back. She’s a one-trick pony.

  20. Gene Parmesan says:

She looks soo awful in that outfit. She should sue her stylist.

  21. Nina says:

I cannot wait for this movie .. despite Kristen Stewart being in it.

  22. Lia says:

“Worst thing that ever happened to her…”. I hope she doesn’t think that. She wouldn’t be playing Snow White if it wasn’t for the Twilight silliness. She’s set for life because of the Bella thing. I hope she never says anything like that, because we would have to send her out into the real world to see what other people consider the “worst thing to ever happen” to them.

    • Michele says:

Kristen has never put down or insulted any of her roles or films in the media. She is an actress who must promote her films like any other actor. The fact that she didn’t even mention Twilight in this interview makes for a weak argument in this case.

Since Twilight is a fantasy film, I am always amazed at how seriously some people take her Bella character. Twilight is a story of first love between two outsiders with a supernatural element thrown in.
Not every character in every film needs to be an ideal role model. I like her portrayal of Bella because Kristen plays her like the ordinary, shy, outsider Bella is in the books. Why must all of our film characters be heroic and strong? Teenage girls come in all sorts of packages. Like Bella, some teens are not athletic or popular. Sometimes all it takes is a character who is identifiable on the screen, flaws and all, to help teens see that they aren’t so bad afterall. Besides, the only thing Bella is guilty of is wanting to spend most of her free time with her new hot boyfriend. Who doesn’t remember their first love and wanting to spend every waking hour with that one special boy? Another thing…she is not the one who wants to get married at age 18! It’s Edward who pushes marriage. I also never understood why people thought Bella didn’t want to go to college either. She was a smart and good student in high school. She just didn’t want Edward paying for some expensive private universary for her to attend. Bella was not a golddigger by any means. When she tells Edward that she will go to some ridicuously expensive school and let him buy her a new car if he agrees to have sex with her before she becomes a vampire, it’s only because she knows how determined and old fashioned he is.

When Kristen and everyone else associated with Twilight for that matter, signed onto Twilight, nobody knew how big it would become. All focus was on that one film only with little to no talk of a sequel. Kristen and many others have stated that the first Twilight film was very much an indie film. Sure it was based on a popular YA book series but besides the Harry Potter franchise, there was no other YA book series at that time that became mega famous when adapted into film.

I will never understand the scrutiny Kristen is under every time she appears in public or grants an interview. The bar is always raised so ridicuously high for her. She’s not stumbling out clubs drunk every night like the Lindsay Lohans. She isn’t paying paps to follow her and Rob around as they stage fake loved up moments on beaches, at soccer matches, etc. like the LeAnn Rimes to keep her pictures circulating on all the gossip sites. She takes her acting very seriously and not one word against her has ever been said about her work ethic on the set.

I only wish some people would not judge her so quickly and unfairly every time her name is mentioned in the press.

      • Orly says:

        tl;dr

Are you that chick who goes around blogs and twitter defending Kristen under the name KSPeoplesChoice? You write some long missives. Sheesh.

      • Orly says:

PS: I’m excited to see SWATH. 😀

      • CTgirl says:

One point at a time . . . KS was seen in bars while underage and let’s not forget smoking a bowl on her front stoop. Classy . . . She’s the only young Hollywood actress who looks like a hobo on her down time 99% of the time with the grungy clothes and unwashed nasty hair (if there are others please let me know and I’ll make fun of them also) . . . and she generally comes across as sour and inarticulate. OH, and twitchy. Really twitchy. I’m sure her work ethic is fine but the girl can’t utter a coherent sentence to save her life. She really needs to get it together.

  23. hairball says:

I am REALLY excited to see this movie but am dreading having to watch her. It is because she is such a BAD actress. I want to get lost in the movie but chances are won’t because of her acting. I see clips and everyone seems very real – then there’s a clip of her riding on a horse all intense I guess and she looks like she’s just doing the bare minimum. It’s like she’s afraid to let go and show actual true emotion – or doesn’t know how.

  24. Happy21 says:

Ok the Twilight movies were pure fluff, not great movies, not great acting and really quite silly but hey were entertaining for entertainments sake.

No, Kristen Stewart’s acting was not at its best in ANY of the ones I’ve seen (all of them so far) but she can act. She was great in The Runaways and the trailers I’ve seen for SWATH have looked pretty damned good. I think this is going to be the movie that solidifies her as an actress. I think she will be taken seriously after this movie comes out 🙂

  25. lolaluvsu2 says:

    Throw some glitter my way…

  26. shailee says:

Kristen has never talk bad about TW, she defends Bella more than anyone on the series, I don’t know what TW has to do with SWATH, the movie looks amazing, and it will shut people up about Kristen and her acting.

  27. Euphorima says:

Wierd, but in that top pic, her eyes seem to be looking in opposite directions?

  28. Cate says:

To ctgirl. I think you are mistaking kristen for nikki reed. Nikki spent a good portion of the summer of 08 barhopping with rob p and she most certainly wasnt legal

    • CTgirl says:

Nope, all you have to do is google “Kristen Stewart underage drinking” and you get quite a few hits.

  29. Michele says:

It’s true Kristen was seen in bars before she was 21 but they were bars in Canada where the drinking age is 19, so she was of legal age. As for smoking weed on her front porch, yeah, she should have been more discrete but she was like 17 when that picture was taken. I did stupid things as a teen also and thankfully as an adult, people aren’t throwing it up in my face still. I think Kristen has done a lot of growing up in recent years. I noticed she smiled more and appeared happy and even lively during BD1 promo. I think she is growing into her success slowly but surely and I think a lot has to do with her relationship with Rob. I think he has a calming effect on her. Plus they both went through the same instant fame and popularity thing at the same time so they can relate to eachother like no one else. I think they bring out the best in eachother when they are together. Sure she still gets a bit tongue-tied and anxious when she’s being interviewed but that’s hardly a reason to hate someone and mock them senselessly. Until someone has walked in her shoes, I would try to be less judgemental and mean spirited about her “twitchiness” and laid back appearance when she is off the clock.

  30. thegorilla says:

people just like to rip on her it seems, ive never read twilight or seen the movies but as far as this article, yeah you’re right, she’s simply talking about the current movie ’cause that is what she’s promoting right now, i highly doubt her whole life and/or career is filled with her obsessing over twilight.

  31. Doug says:

KS was awesome in the Runaways — given a good character to portray like Joan Jett and she was just fine.
