Nina Dobrev and Jessica Alba in metallic at the Met Gala: lovely?

Do you remember Nina Dobrev’s killer red Donna Karan at the Emmy Awards last year? It looked like she was born to wear it, and that’s how I feel about this amazing metallic Donna Karan dress she’s sporting at the MET Gala. It’s got a similar fishtail design to her Emmy dress and it just looks stunning on her figure. I love the draping near the asymmetrical neckline which continues around the open back. The dripping metallic design on the dress is fashion-forward and snake-like without making it look like she’s molting. Her updo coupled with elegant makeup and simple starbust earrings are just perfect. Overall this is an amazing look, one of the best of the night.

I’m not as fond of Jessica Alba’s bronze tinfoil-look Michael Kors gown. The cut is very flattering and classic, like old school Hollywood, but the fabric just makes it look cheap somehow. I love her styling though. Her sideswept wavy hair, simple red matte lips, and understated smokey eyes are so pretty and compliment this look. Her gold accessories go well with her dress, although she could have done without the chunky ring. She looks incredibly pretty, but the shininess of the dress is throwing it off somehow.

In silver metallic we have Lana Del Rey, in Joseph Altuzarra. She’s shown here with the designer. The dress might be stunning if I could actually see it. What’s with that bizarre diaphanous black cape around her shoulders? I get that it’s a costume ball and that some ladies are going to dress like superheros, but this is too much. The eggplant purple lipstick just manages to emphasize how bizarrely shaped her lips are. Her hair looks great, though. I like that she didn’t overdo the accessories and just tried to work that cape. It’s not really working for her.

Nina’s dress was my favorite of the night! I thought she looked beautiful.

  2. liza says:

Nina has really hideous style. She always looks tacky.

    • LizEJ says:

ITA. Nina Dobrev just doesn’t have the stature or style to pull off such a “big” dress. Besides, the dress is way too “beauty pageant” on her.

  3. Jade says:

Nina’s dress is so old and safe. She’ in her early 20s she should spice it up.
Jessica dress is boring and couple years to late.
    Lana is just lacking.

    • Maguita says:

I respectfully disagree. Nina looked A-mazing on the red carpet, I watched her arrival, and the dress brought out a bit of a wild quality to her slim frame.

She usually looks feeble and fragile, but this dress with the hair and make-up brought out a bit of the wild jungle cat in her, and gave her frame more strength. It was my favorite for the night.

As for Del Rey, I thought she was a pale imitation of Gweneth Paltrow’s Tom Ford look for the Oscars. She owned the cape (Gwen), and anyone else wearing it after her, is simply going to look like an imitation, a pale copy. Add to the fact that I personally find Lana Del Rey very fake, so you understand that when I saw her, I simply rolled my eyes, and thought, oh copying again.

      • liza says:

Brought out a wild jungle cat in her? LOL WTF???

      • Maguita says:

The dress has leopard print on the silver patches. It doesn’t show much on these pictures, but more during her arrival on the red carpet yesterday. So that’s WTF this is about.

      • Emma says:

The only similarity between Lana’s and Gwyneth’s dress is the cape. Other than that they are COMPLETELY different.

  4. Aria says:

Lana looks plastic. Nina was by far the most stunning lady of the night. I like Jessica dress too but I would prefer it on someone else like Kirsten Dunst.

  5. moolah says:

    Lana’s hair is PERFECT!

    • RocketMerry says:

Right?! Just so gorgeous and perfect!

I feel like I could copy that close up, photo-shop her face out of it and then keep the actual hair as my desktop image for a while.

  6. Liv says:

Is Lana Del Rey trying to imitate Gwyneth’s Oscar dress?

  7. NONNIE says:

I do not like Jess’ dress….at all. Or her makeup. I don’t like her in real dark lipstick…but maybe that’s just me….
Nine looks good I think. She’s got a nice body…nice toned back and arms. Jealous!!!

  8. Sisi says:

Del Rey needs to work on her posture, why did she even bother to put on a ‘look at me’ outfit if she walks around like that.

I want shiny hair like Jessica Alba :/

I like Nina but there is something off about the whole thing. Maybe she just doesn’t have the presence to really take this look into show-stopper territory. This dress on someone like Zellweger, or even Beyonce, would take it to a different level. The dress just feels “bigger” than the person wearing it. But Nina gets an A for effort.

Lana, lose the cape – and the pout.

  10. lucy2 says:

For this event, I love Nina’s – I think it’s different and daring and really unique. It’d be bad for the Oscars or something, but great for making a statement here.
Alba’s is OK but boring, agree about the fabric.

  11. Hanna says:

Nina’s dress looks cheap. Just tacky.

  12. Fabianne says:

I think the Altuzarra dress was the best of the three, sheer cape and all. Lana pulls the vintage look very well.

  13. Chatcat says:

Lana is wearing chain mail and Barnabas Collins’ cape! Jessica looks beautiful as always and Nina is a beauty but that dress is too much for her stature…without the big train would have suited her more I believe.

  14. poppy says:

the zipper on the michael kors dress is cheap and tacky.

  15. Kate says:

Nina looks perfect in everything she wears. No idea how she does that…

  16. Jenna says:

LOVED Nina’s dress. A definite favorite of the night. Everyone else’s dress was either horrible or just plain boring.

  17. Erin says:

I can’t stand Jessica Alba, but she looks beautiful here, despite the kind of tacky dress and way too obvious side zipper. Lana del Rey needs to eat a sandwich and stop with the lip injections. She looks like she’s on 50 different pills.

  18. gigi says:

I liked Nina in her dress, very Hollywood of her. Jessica is a pretty girl and it’s a nice dress, but it’s just not spectacular enough for the event. Lana needs to lose the cape and the dead expression, that dress should’ve gone to someone with more sex appeal and better posture.

  19. Neelyo says:

that Nina chick has an old lady’s face. A pretty old lady, but still an old lady.

  20. Mikki says:

Nina always looks stunning when she goes to these events – much more so than a lot of other women that should know better. If you want to see the definition of “tacky”…please see Beyonce!

  21. e says:

Geez, this is Met gala not some pageant or some boring HW red carpet. Designers should be CREATIVE and not repeating themselves. I was expecting a lot more of Donna Karan considering Nina’s stylist has been touting her horn for the last 2 weeks how this dress is going to be special and fab.

Now after seeing it on Nina, all I can say is WTF. Back of the dress is disastrous, especially bottom. Poor Nina looks like she’s wearing a diaper. Train is too long for a girl of Nina’s height and in return makes her look smaller than she is. All this talk of being inspired by Gwyneth’s dress from Great Expectations is pissing me off. Instead of going with something new and fresh – because Nina is rather a newbie on fashion circuit – Karan and Nina’s stylist decided to butcher great movie costume adding uber long train and have it made in black with gold sequins. Never mind, that this is Met gala dedicated to Elsa Schiaparelli, who was one of the most innovative designers ever. If this is how pieces from Donna Karan Atelier are going to look like, then it would be better if they’re not produced at all. Marchesa is producing enough of frou frou, tacky and princessy stuff for whole HW.

Nina is 23, has banging body and she should be looking her age and not like she is in late 30s or even 40s. Seriously, someone should hook her up with Emma Stone’s stylist ASAP. Emma’s styling is fun, age appropriate, grown up when needed and still very much Emma.

  22. Kim says:

Lanas bad lip injections ruin her whole face.

  23. Anne de Vries says:

Lana looks like she’s at a ren faire in a chain maille dress with a cape..

  24. Diana says:

I liked both Nina and Jessica’s dress. Both beautiful specially Nina’s although I’m not sure about that black hanging thingy on the back; still, simply gorgeous.

  25. Celia says:

Jessica Alba looks gorgeous! I love the dress, everything on her.
