Elizabeth Banks in mismatch Mary Katrantzou at the Met Gala: fashion-forward or fug?

Elizabeth Banks
I finally saw Hunger Games a couple of weeks ago, and even in my small town, the theater was crowded. The film was excellent, with an edge-of-your-seat plot that closely followed the books and some amazing scenery and costuming. Banks’ styling as Effie Trinket was so good that I barely even recognized her. At last night’s Met Gala it looked like she was channeling Effie somewhat, which is strange because at the premieres for the film she wore a lot of very bright solid-colored dresses by different designers. That’s sort-of her go-to look and it really works for her.

So it’s confusing to me that she chose a Mary Katrantzou contrasting pattern dress, to put it kindly, that comes off as cacophonous it’s so loud. Without the rounded capelet thing at the arms, and without the peplum “dust ruffle” bit around the waist, it might have worked. Even the slit straight down the front looks out of place. As it is, she just looks a little mortified in that dress, doesn’t she? It’s like her expression is apologetic and sad.

Banks’ shoes are kind of awesome at the rare moments they’re peeking out. Check out the sequin heels with the thin black straps. I love her blush-colored toes and nails, which match her peachy lips. Her makeup is very pretty. Her hair just looks greasy and like an poofy afterthought, though. It’s a shame because she’s really worked some fashion-forward looks in the past. This designer just failed her.

Ugh. It’s very fashion foward but that doesn’t make it attractive. Looks like she’s wearing about 4 different dresses at once.

  2. Jordan says:

This was the worst dress ever! EVER!

  3. bea says:

    If that’s fashion-forward, I’ll just stay behind!

It’s just not flattering in any way. Her sandals are gorgeous!

    Oh my.

  5. Cait says:

Ok, so I think this may be even worse than Beyonce’s gown, which is saying something. She usually rocks the red carpet, what happened???

  6. Stubbylove says:

It’s a good idea but hell to the no – not well executed.

  7. polk8dot says:

    Absolutely hate this dress.
Worst of all – the bodice. If you are using a patterned fabric for a fitted feature, make sure, for the love of god, that the fricking PATTERNS LINE UP! If you can’t make them line up properly, change the f-ing fabric!

THIS. Those seams on the bust are awful.

Worst dressed of the night for sure. With Beyonce bringing up the rear (no pun intended. :D)

    • Sisi says:

      this. So much!

none of the patterns line up, and that is most amateur thing about the whole look and it’s the only thing I can see

  8. Sisi says:

that skirt with the slit doesn’t look fashion forward to me.

the rest might have worked as a minidress

    Oh hell go here come.

  10. Agnes says:

worst dress ever, or at least of the evening. good god.

  11. Maritza says:

That dress hurts my eyes just to look at it! Her stylist hates her.

  12. MST says:

Looks like this was made in home ec. class by someone who ran out of fabric so they had to borrow from different classmates to finish it. Awful.

  13. Maguita says:

I loved the look! I know, I know, it’s too fashion forward, but it works on Banks’ frame, and especially, it works for the MET GALA. If it were for any other red carpet, I would have thought it too much. For the Met, it was just perfectly in theme for the night, and un-safe in so many aspects.

  14. Aria says:

I like this dress but only on her.

  15. ladybert62 says:

What is wrong with these women! The only one there who had a halfway decent dress was Rhianna? Lordy lordy!

That dress is a nightmare come to life.

Before I even read the article, I saw the picture and thought “Effie!”

  18. F5 says:

    Hahahahahahahahahaha!
    No.

  19. Reece says:

I like this! First one I’ve seen that I really like. The one problem I see is the halter is giving her front bra fat. I think I would have given her the bun face lift instead of poofy. But that’s her call.

  20. Hope says:

You know what this dress makes me think of? A 50’s diner. Like the designer was sitting in a little old truck stop on the way to the airport and was inspired by the decor and decided to make a dress that looked just like it. Horrible.

  21. Anne de Vries says:

I think I could maybe love the capelet thing if the dust ruffle was yanked off and the whole dress was the motif of the bodice. Because that brown ribbon fabric is lovely, and I like the shape of the capelet thing, and I think it could sort of work.

  22. Michele says:

This is one of the most ridiculous dresses I have ever seen.

  23. layla says:

    THIS on Cate Blanchett. Amazing.

  24. Kim says:

Didnt she get the memo that this wasnt a Hunger Games shoot it was the Met Gala?

  25. JuliaDomna says:

What in tarnation is THAT dress? She looks stupid.
