Miley Cyrus says “sex is beautiful,” but she’s “not sitting here trying to be sexy”

Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus has appeared on the most recent episode of Lifetime’s “The Conversation,” which is hosted by Amanda de Cadenet, who also produces the show along with Demi Moore. I’ll admit that I’m surprised because Miley ends up being a pretty interesting interview even though she’s talking about not trying to be sexy when she clearly does make such efforts including her latest cleavage-baring, red-carpet outfit at the Billboard Awards. Also she had a recent >deliberate or mistake of an upskirt, but I’m honestly not trying to knock her. In this interview, Miley really seems to get it. Not just the part where she talks about sex but also her answers about learning to be herself instead of the manufactured Disney persona that she lived within for so many years. Here are some transcribed excerpts from Miley’s talk with Amanda:

Miley Cyrus

On leaving the “Hannah Montana” persona behind: “I was so trained in my interviews to be the All-American whatever, and then I realized that I was so used to saying that, and then I looked at it one day, and what I was saying really wasn’t true anymore. I just got so set in the same way of saying things when I was twelve years old … so I guess I just realized that my entire life wasn’t some giant press junket. I don’t have to be smiling all the time.”

Did she feel the pressure to perform in a showbiz family? “When I was younger, I really did want that, and now when I think about it, you can’t change it, you can’t go back, you can’t regret anything. It’s best not to. You’d drive yourself crazy. No matter what, you can’t rewind, as much as you want to. And there are times when I actually say, ‘Would I have done that now? I might say don’t do it, ’cause that isn’t going to be who you are.’ But I did, and you can’t let that stop you. And one of my really good friends, she says, ‘If you let your past be your present, then it’s inevitably going to be your future.’ And so I just don’t want that anymore. I don’t want to feel tied to something that obviously isn’t me.”

On her home sanctuary: “I really had a hard time learning to be alone. I hated to be alone, and my mom hates that too. And then I just started to really enjoy being alone. I think it’s because I had to smile so much, and I had to say so much of the same thing. It’s like I just really wanted to go inside [my head] and be like, ‘What do I really think about this? Do I really think that, or am I just trained to say that? Or have I said that for so many years now that it’s what people expect me to say so I don’t have to be creative and say something else?’ But I guess I just really had to learn to be alone, and now I love it. I love being by myself. I thought when I got my own place, I’d have people staying with me all the time. Now I try and kick people out by 10 o’clock so I can just sit on the couch with my dogs and watch tv.”

On having a sexy image: “That’s not the point. You’re not sitting here trying to be sexy. If people find that and find you sexy, take it as a compliment. It’s like, ‘This is just how I am, and thank you for thinking I’m sexy.’ People are so scared of seeing a woman being like, ‘This is who I am, you’re not going to change it.'”

On sex as a currency: “The girls who really base how much they’re worth on sexual favors that they can do for somebody — that makes me really sad because sex actually really is very beautiful. It’s like the only way that we create, and it’s the only way that the world keeps going. So it’s ignorant not to talk to your kids about it and not make it seem as magical and cool as it really is. If they have a tv, they know what sex is. Everyone knows, so educate them. Let them know that they wouldn’t be here without it, and it is beautiful, and it is magic, and it is when you connect with somebody, and it isn’t about how much you’re worth. Your worth is based upon how you feel about yourself.”

[From The Conversation]

In a sense, I can see what Miley is saying about how — if she had known what she knows now — she may have never decided to be Hannah Montana in the first place. Then again, it’s really easy to say that while resting easily upon millions of dollars in one’s own mansion, right? Even though Miley might be slightly out of touch due to her years of fame and riches, I still think she comes off as fairly lucid and aware of herself as a person. Of course, she’s got all the time and money in the world to meditate upon such issues too.

Here’s video of Miley’s appearance on “The Conversation,” and Melissa McCarthy appears in episode a bit later as well. I kind of got distracted by the dog who keeps appearing and disappearing from Miley’s lap throughout the interview.

Her.f–ing.mouth and that vocal fry voice make it ultra hard to deal or pay attention, sorry

    • Maguita says:

Urgh. She still has, like, the Hannah Montana, like, tone. uuuuugh.

Just reading the transcript though, it finally looks like Miley is 19, and growing up.

I also think that living on her own, away from her big family’s drama, and dating someone much more stable like Liam, has done her a world of good. Then again, getting rejected for movie roles in Hollywood must be one big humbling experience.

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

Still waiting for the vocal fry epidemic to end. Young women need to find a more effective, intelligent way of expressing themselves. That being said, I thought Miley came across as relatively thoughtful here, much more so than many of her famous peers. The “I’m not trying to be sexy” schtick is laughable though. Just own it girl, and please don’t treat us as if we’re stupid.

    • littlestar says:

I apologize for being ignorant, but what is a vocal fry?

I agree though, Miley’s voice can be annoying. It’s quite nasally and she has this strange tendency to shout in a monotone voice.

    • Lana says:

I think she sounds fine. Get over it.

    • Mourning the Death of Music says:

Vocal Fry…huh… and here for years, I just called it people being lazy with their speech. I hate it, deeply. It makes you want to smack them upside the back of the head and tell them to clear their throat.

  2. Lex says:

    She is so 2006. NEXT.

  3. Eleonor says:

And it’s because she doesn’t want to be considered sexy that she’s lost weight, works out for hours, and shows her new improved body…ok I’ll try to be not too harsh because she is still young.

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

I mean, we all know that she tries to be sexy but a lot of people work out for health reasons, not necessarily to be (quote) “sexy”.

      • Eleonor says:

In my opinion: she didn’t need to lose weight, she was ok, not superfitted maybe, but she was ok: not fat, not skinny. She made a diet and worked out even more, to be more fitted, and strut her new hot body around.

  4. cupidtyrox says:

The entire world wishes she never was Hannah Montana. She has absolutely no talent. Calling her acting wooden would be a compliment

  5. TheOriginalVictoria says:

I agree with this post. I think she said some interesting and sincere things. It does make sense.

But I don’t think she’s really being fair. She was a minor and I’m not saying you aren’t allowed to say thing and speak your mind but what kind of sh-t was she really doing at such a young age that wasn’t squeaky clean kid fun that she felt she couldn’t be herself?

But I do understand what she is saying about having to always be on and bubbly like her character. I hope that’s really the core of what she’s getting at.

Lastly, I really hate when entertainers act like their job is soooo crushing. I’m sure it’s taxing, I’m sure there is always a lot to do. We know it is, but the type of entertainer she is not all that hard. She doesn’t really have to sing or even act well. She just has to be Miley Cyrus and con millions out of the General Audience.

  6. Mourning the Death of Music says:

Miley’s statement about a sexy image is complete B.S. She does everything in her power to put out an image that screams sex.

Of course one can be sexy wearing a bulap sack – those women honestly exude sex appeal regardless of what they wear.
She (as to date) is not one of those beings. Her frequent daring costumes are a strategic move to focus on her forced sexuality.

Little girl needs to put on some pants and get an education.

  7. Cel says:

I think she is desperate to be seen as sexy – her recent appearances bear that out and make her comments seem fake.

But I wholeheartedly agree with her last paragraph regarding sex and self worth.

  8. Britt says:

I like her shoes, that’s about it from me.

  9. H says:

The image of Liam and Miley having sex makes me lose a bit respect for him. I hope he knows what’s good for him and dumps her. No one takes him seriously while he’s with her.

    • Kara Ann says:

I understand where you are coming from but I think I would lose respect for him if he dumped her b/c he’s doing well professinally (sp?) or b/c other people think that it’s a good idea for him too. The flip side of the coin I guess.

I do think eventually they will break up but I hope it’s for relationship (growing up) reasons.

    • Clara says:

Didn’t she use to preach purity until marriage along with the Jonas brothers?
Double standards, much. Very reminiscent of Britney’s transition from child star to train wreck.

      • Emma says:

But that’s what she’s explaining in the interview; She was told by all of the PR-people that because she’s representing Disney she should also represent Disney’s values. Then she realised herself that actually that’s not HER opinion and that she and Hannah Montana are two different people. Therefore she no longer preaches ‘no sex before marriage’ because she has now created her own opinion on the matter.

      • Amelia says:

I did think exactly what you’re getting at to begin with, but she always backed it up with her Christian beliefs, so either she’s drastically changed those or I was very naive and thought religion meant she was telling the truth … God, it’s been a long day!

  10. NeNe says:

It’s time for her to STFU!!!

  11. Sue says:

Wow, she looks 30 years old……

  12. only1shmoo says:

Wear provocative clothing in public. Check!

Tell the world I’m fine with my curves but then make sure the paparazzi know I’m doing pilates 2x a day. Check!

Get photographed while in compromising/questionable situations (i.e. toking up, liking d*ck cake, etc.) so that I appear “edgy & grown up”. Check!

Talk openly about how great sex is, even though I touted my commitment to abstinence while I was still a Disney star. This will score points with my fans’ parents. Check!

Go to award shows looking more suitable for an Agent Provocateur catalogue than a red carpet appearance, just so ya’ll know I’m sexy. Check!

Bullshit everyone into thinking that I’m just keeping it real. Check!

    Whew, it’s tough being Miley.

    • Sugar says:

check me in as agreeing with u!

    • TxGal says:

      LOL

    • DreamyK says:

Wearing a body necklace that drapes under your breasts in a cut to *there* jacket with no pants? Check.

The funny part was that she didn’t extend her bronzer makeup into her chest area so she was two toned. Miley? That ain’t sexy. Fail.

  13. Chatcat says:

I will give her a pass on part of this interview because she is only 19… young and dumb is an excuse for somethings (I’m referring to the sexy image paragraph here)

Other then that, I thought it was a good interview and if she was genuine in her answers then good for her. She seems better in tune with fame at a young age better then most young hollywood stars.

And again, no mention of Liam and she hasn’t been spotted with him lately…”
Now I try and kick people out by 10 o’clock so I can just sit on the couch with my dogs and watch tv.” I am suspecting they are no longer a couple and wonder when that break up is going to be officially reported. However, she is only 19 so you go girl! Have fun while your young…

    • Kate says:

She actually gave this interview over a year ago and spoke about Liam at the Billboard awards a couple of days ago. They’re still a couple.

      • Chatcat says:

Are you sure that this interview was over a year ago? I think it was much more recent then a year…I will have to take a cruise around cyberspace and find out…I know it aired last week but I am sure we can find out the date the interview was given.

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

I saw her on Access Hollywood or some show last night (it was a BBMA carpet interview) joking that Liam isn’t allowed to accompany her to events anymore because he always steps on the train of her dress 🙂

      • Chatcat says:

Big bumbling idiot! LOL. Although with her most recent dress there wasn’t anything close to a train to step on…hell there wasn’t even a skirt for her to sit on! Now if she had said “people say he is prettier then I am” I’d believe her! 🙂

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

EXACTLY what I was thinking: “What train??” As you said, it was barely a dress!

  14. Aiobhan says:

Wow! The world must be coming to an end because I am actually a little impressed with Miley.

Her comment about being considered sexy is complete BS but I will let it slide because the rest of the interview is interesting.

  15. danielle says:

Wonder why she is doing an interview when she doesn’t have anything to promote?

  16. Jayna says:

Wow, the hate on someone so young finding their way. I like her and give her leeway in interviews because at that age I can’t imagine the things I would say. Her body looks great.

  17. Faxon415 says:

Is it really magical to have sex with a 23 year old underwear model when you are 14? I thought that was called statutory rape. As much as she sounds as if she has grown up(via a good publicist)what else is she supposed to say? Once she made 100 million off of disney, now she can trash it and claim that it was all their fault. It appalls me that she really thinks she is some sort of feminist role model for girls. Please.

    • blaize says:

First of all, the guy was 20 and she was 16 when they dated. Their relationship lasted a short time. Second, nobody has proof that they had sex. Not every young person has sex with every single person they date. I’m 19, I’ve had 3 boyfriends, and I’ve only had sex with one of them. And third, even if they did have sex, it might not have been statutory rape. In many states the age of consent is 16, her parents approved of the relationship.

  18. Faxon415 says:

PS:With all that being said, I do think she is a good kid and will only continue to grow into herself as a conscience human being.

  19. Kara Ann says:

I like this interview. Miley seems to be trying a little self-reflection which is good and just generally trying to figure herself out.

The “sexy” thing irritates me but I see that in alot of young women her age in real life. A young relative of mine (21 years old) recently looked through her wardrobe and commented, “I used to dress like a slut.” It was funny, true, and made me realize that she is growing up. I hope Miley gets there too!

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

When I was in my 20s I wore crap that I would NEVER in a million years wear now. I have a photo montage of all the inappropriate outfits I wore to family holiday functions (mini skirts that I could barely sit down in, low-cut tight sweaters zipped halfway open, really you would think I was on my way to a club). Then I would always complain about cat-calls and negative attention. *eye roll* Sometimes I wish I could go back in time and slap my twenty-year-old face 🙂
Anyway, most girls in Miley’s age range like to look sexy. I can’t really fault her in that sense…

      • Kara Ann says:

I am glad that there isn’t much photographic evidence of my wardrobe as a young woman! I wonder sometimes with all the social media of today with Facebook, cell phone cameras and all that if todays young ladies will be as horrified at themselves as we are BUT they will so many more images to re-live that “what? i look fine.” time of their lives.

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

Oh DEFINITELY! That’s one small consolation for me-at least the embarassing pics weren’t shown to 969 of my FB “friends” as FB wasn’t a “thing” back then. Makes you wonder where the future will lead, the internet age def. shows no sign of stopping, so probably LOTS of embarassing photos to come 🙂

      • Chatcat says:

What one of us hasn’t worn or acted like we thought we were little sex dolls in our late teens/twenties. Always dispose of the evidence…the self memories are bad enough! lol

      • Emma says:

“Then I would always complain about cat-calls and negative attention” So you think because you showed a lot of skin you shouldn’t be treated with respect? I’m sorry, that’s what I’m getting from what you wrote and I think that’s a pretty messed up view of women and womens bodies.

  20. TxGal says:

You know every time she opens her mouth she sounds like a beaver LOLOL.

  21. Jo says:

Yeah **tiny violins** I’m SURE it’s really tough being Miley f-ing Cyrus. She’s not getting any of my sympathy votes. Just another spoiled brat who thinks she’s so super cool and sexy. Sex appeal comes from within and this tramp doesn’t have it. She’s just another dime a dozen 2-bit ho.

  22. Jover says:

Agree jo and cupidytryox she’s untalented and uneducated and talks off the top of her head like any celebutard; Chipmunk needs to face the fact that she milked disney and now it’s over – go back to the trailer park teeter totter where you belong;I regret that i among millions patronized disney back in the day and provided them with revenue to foist pointless hannah montana crap on the public laughing all the way to the bank, of course. Excuse me, as far as “hating” on her because of her youth,we have 18 and 19 yr olds in Iraq/afghanistan making life and death decisions everyday – what’s her excuse for spoiled stupidity.

    • blaize says:

So apparently when you were 19 you were perfectly innocent. Therefore, you have the right to sit in judgment of her like an uptight prude.

  23. Mita Jay says:

Ughhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!! I get SICK of these celebrities wanting fame soo bad, begging their parents to let them go on tv, then when the fame comes to them ( britney spears, Willow Smith ect) they whine & complain about how they dont want to be famous anymore, how they dont have any privacy & how they would take it back just to be normal again. NEWSFLASH Its what you ASKED for! If you didnt want to be famous you should have kept your mouth shut & never asked!

    • Mourning the Death of Music says:

But for that, you must lay full responsibility on the parents. The people you mention were (and some still are) children when they went to their parents.

It was up to that parent to say no. Obviously they didn’t. Which says a lot more about said parent than child.

But for whatever actions these celebrities take as an adult – that’s all on their own heads.

      • sarahtonin says:

Stage parents are among the most vile creatures that slither across this earth, the whole industry needs far more regulation. But there is nothing stopping these kids from quitting when they are adults, assuming they are not completely institutionalised by then.

  24. LaurenElizabeth says:

She’s getting a lot of flack for the sexy comment but I don’t see anything wrong with it. I’m not much older than her (22) but to me sexy is a state of mind. I enjoy getting fixed up, and what I choose to wear is only to please myself. What’s so wrong with feeling hot in a short dress?

  25. Jasmine says:

I don’t get why people are bashing her. If you watch the interview, she seems to be trying to figure herself out. Some people are saying why did she say this in the past then, etc? She’s trying to explain that!I remember being 19…. give her a break. Even at 14 and 16, I didn’t know what I believed. Haha, sometimes I still don’t. Let’s live our lives and let others live theirs.

  26. Sunmoonstars says:

Maybe I’m a boring prude but I am so tired of hearing about sex. Yes, it’s a part of life but that doesn’t mean we have to hear about it 24/7. The way it’s talked about you’d think that’s all there is to life! It’s esecially sad for women because there’s this idea that if you’re not sexy you’re worthless…and people like Miley certainly don’t help with this crap. “Oh no, I’M not trying to be sexy…tee hee!” *goes pantsless to an awards show*. Being “sexy” is the easiest way to seem cool and edgy even if you’re boring, stupid or unlikable. Why bother to cultivate a personality when you can spread your legs? I can’t imagine why anyone would care about another person’s sex life anyway, it just seems creepy and voyeuristic, especially when it’s chipmunk face Cyrus.

  27. Happy21 says:

This interview impressed me. Miley is grounded for her age. She has not been to rehab, she isn’t out at the clubs, she has some pretty impressive values.

I think the sexy thing is complete BS and doubt that she dresses for a function thinking anything BUT being looked as sexy but she is young and will learn.

I think she is a terrible actress but the girl can sing. She was on Ellen earlier this year and she killed it. She sounded amazing. It was not autotune or anything like that just her and totally raw.

As far as the Disney schtick goes, I don’t think that she is knocking Disney, she’s just sayin’ this is how it was and I don’t know if I would do it again if I had the opportunity.

    Go Miley 🙂

  28. I.want.shoes says:

Says the chipmunk who runs around in a ridiculous “shirt” flashing her side boob.

  29. Effy says:

I tried to dislike her for the longest time, but I really do like her quite a lot.
She seems like she’d be a laugh to hang out with.

  30. Crystal says:

The interview was really good. I’m not a fan because I’m not interested in her stuff but I agree with everything she said. Her wording was pretty cheesy but she is spot on, especially the part about educating your kids.

She deserves more credit tbh. It’s a shame that this will probably get twisted and become negative because she has a positive attitude and I think she’s really maturing. Good for her.

  31. Adrien says:

She comes off as a real, down to earth person on this interview, intelligent even. I was prepared to roll eyes, but no, I was impressed. Good to know she’s self-aware.

  32. Free Speech says:

    Really

  33. lisa says:

I call b.s. in her comments on a sexy image but other than that I thought Miley came across well in this interview.

  34. spiderpig says:

ok, despite the big hair & the impression she’s tryin 2 hard, i think Chicklets actually looks pretty good here. M still confused as 2 how she n Trace are related – i mean, she looks human

  35. anneesezz says:

Not trying to be sexy? I call BS on that and most of the interview. These people are actors and do a good job of acting like they are not complete egomaniacs. Come on!
