Diane Kruger wears a ridiculous Dior gown & the Cannes Film Festival wrap-up

Well, the Cannes Film Festival has drawn to a close. Surprisingly, the most Americanized Cannes Film Festival in years had no American winners. There were no French winners either. A French-language film (from an Austrian director), Amour, did take home the Palme d’Or (the biggest prize). Amour is a story about an older man taking care of his wife who has had a stroke, and both roles are played by beloved French actors. From what the Los Angeles Times is saying (read their wrap-up here), the jury liked Garrett Hedlund in On the Road (not enough to give him anything though) and they liked Matthew McConaughey in Mud. Other films that weren‘t received all that well: Lawless (Tom Hardy, Shia LaBeouf film), The Paperboy (that awful-sounding Nicole Kidman film) and Cosmopolis, which didn‘t even get an American distributor. Critics liked Moonrise Kingdom and Killing Them Softly (Brad Pitt’s latest), but there isn’t a lot of early awards buzz for either.

Cannes juror Diane Kruger wore this ridiculous Dior gown for the closing ceremonies. How can you even sit down in that? Also: Bonus Ewan McGregor.

Here are more photos from the closing ceremonies and red carpet at Cannes. Mads Mikkelsen won Best Actor for his portrait of a teacher falsely accused of molesting a student.

Andie MacDowell and her daughter, Sarah Margaret Qualley. Great genes. Andie wore Armani, Sarah wore Elie Saab.

Kylie Minogue, looking pretty (and Botoxy) in Roberto Cavalli.

Alec Baldwin and his 20-something girl, Hilaria Thomas. Her dress looks really budget.

Audrey Tautou in…?? Chanel, maybe? Vintage? I don’t know. I think Audrey is very pretty, but her style is very… cloying. At times.

I can’t warm to Diane Kruger. That face. I just want to slap it. I file her under “Gwyneth Vile” in my brain.

    Kylie’s dress is lovely.

In the first picture Diane looks like she is saying ” does this dress make my Butt look Big ? ” Moving on … That photo of Mads …is everything there is just something so HOT about him. Thanks for the photos .

Well, at least this dress covers up Diane’s scarily thin legs.

Andie’s Armani is a big wrinkley mess. Too bad-because in theory it’s lovely. I think Diane’s dress is so over the top-it’s art.

Um, Cosmopolis got an American distributor (E1) before the movie premiered at Cannes and Cosmopolis got very good reviews and raves from the French critics. Who is telling the press to write negative things about Cosmopolis that are blatant lies?

I read this too, it’s strange how different everyone is reporting this. The French/European critics praised it, American press didn’t.

      • Chris says:

The French reviews were all raves but the American reviews were mixed on the positive side. So at no point should anyone be saying negative things about the movie. While ALL french critics loved the movie about 70% of American critics did. This is still positive so I don’t know why some media reports including this site have been reporting blatant lies. It is very suspicious in my opinion.

I get the feeling in the US they are just very reluctant to see him succeed. They can’t give up his association with Twilight, can’t seem to be able to get over it and there for, can’t acknoledge he can be good in other things.

I love all the dresses, even Diane’s and I think Diane Kruger is adorable and I never thought Joshua Jackson was handsome but he is getting super hot lately squiring Diana about Cannes. So adorable. I love the dress Andie McDowell’s daughter is wearing. She looks stunning in it. Though Audry Tatou looks terrible in the face, her dress is adorable but she looks like she has aged badly. I think she is so pretty so I am hoping this is just bad makeup, lighting or something. I love all her films.

Someone tell me again, who is Diane Kruger, and why do we care about her? Actress? model? Anorexic? Does she constantly sport that bitchface because she’s always starving, or what? That severe ponytail makes her look like she’s already got a receding hairline.

with her hair like that and that skinny face, she reminds me of Kristin Wiig’s character on the Lawrence Welk show (http://14.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_kuxou3UN881qz82gvo1_500.jpg)

Diane’s dress is merely a tie in to her new French language film “Farewell My Queen”, where she plays Marie Antoinette in her last 3 days of freedom.

Is Audrey like the french version of Zooey Deschanel?

I feel bad for a lot of the American films at Cannes. I was hoping that Cosmopolis would do better because of the director attached alone, but no distributor. Damn!

Mads Mikkelsen is hot. But he also reminds me of Vera Farmiga.

Ok, don’t everyone jump my butt at once, but does any one else think it looks like Ewan has had a little, um, refreshing done recently in that first photo of him? Maybe it’s just the hair going up so much?

Dior has gone downhill since Galliano was fired, It looks like they were trying to go for that Tudor kind of look Vivienne Westwood did a short while ago but failed.

Kylie looks nice but she’s worn some much better dresses than that at Cannes, she tweeted a pic of a black one that was gorgeous. She looks botoxy but I guess she’s just gonna stick with it, her sister looked like that when she started as a judge on X Factor and after she ditched the botox she looked much better.

Diane Kruger’s gown is “une robe de marquise” (with a kind of crinoline under the skirt). It is very gracious and beautiful.
I also think Galliano was a little marvel for Dior design. C’est dommage !

One american movie in the selection is highly appreciated by the french critics : Mud (with Mac Connaughey)

I ADORE her dress. Her hair and make-up are perfect with it, and she looks exquisite. Remember, it’s Cannes, and it’s the closing night. It’s entirely the appropriate level of drama.

It’s closing night so Diane Kruger’s dress is supposed to be high drama and over the top.

Plus those dresses aren’t that hard to sit in. Remember that women wore those kinds of things for years. You kind of perch on the edge of the seat and arrange the dress as needed. You don’t sit back like you do in a dinner chair or a couch.
